QUOTE(Soxbadger @ Feb 22, 2008 -> 07:20 AM) http://www.sportsline.com/collegebasketball/story/10659277 Any Indiana fans with information? This basically seems like worst case scenario. i don't think there's a chance in hell that the kids don't finish the season. sampson likely gets some sort of walking papers today and i would bet the entire indiana team will be in uniform tomorrow against northwestern. i don't blame them for reacting that way, but cooler heads will prevail. in regards to the carlwell situation, i agree that he holds a degree of responsibility, although lesser than smith. in the initial aftermath of the incident, i was more favoring smith to be gone but i changed my opinion primarily because how his teammates (the people who were actually there) including carlwell, lined up in support of him afterwards. to me, that is more significant than hearsay or second-hand accounts of what happened that night. does anyone think that if smith knowingly and willfully attempted to let his teammate die that everyone including the player himself would line up in unanimous support of him? i don't. that said, i respect the opinion of anyone who thinks he should be gone. if you want to stake your claim to some moral high ground, it's hard to argue with that approach. it clearly was an ugly incident and something that will always be mentioned when the name jamar smith comes up. he will get a rough ride next year. that, coupled with a year-and-a-half suspension makes me scoff a bit at people who suggest he got off light. -
i like the trade. at this point, any deal that got rid of wallace was fine by me. nothing personal, but noah and thomas need to play. not sure what cleveland was thinking, tho.

QUOTE(JFields27 @ Feb 21, 2008 -> 07:06 PM) We want some Bulls talk? How about Ben Wallace and Chris Duhon to the Cavs for Larry Hughes that would be quite a trade per Ric Bucher chad ford's chatting about a few variations of this deal right now on espn. drew gooden is involved, too. supposedly the bulls don't want hughes back.

QUOTE(Soxbadger @ Feb 21, 2008 -> 06:56 PM) Ive seen comments, not sure which ones your referring to? Are they the ones where he said Carlwell needs to lose weight and work harder? i'd presume those were the ones. i don't really like it, but it will undoubtedly be blown out of proportion as with most things weber says/does. -

QUOTE(sircaffey @ Feb 21, 2008 -> 04:31 AM) Chester Taylor with 13 REB? What, did Pruitt hoist him up on his shoulders? chester frazier has always been a good rebounder despite his size. he has a good nose for the ball, although i wish he'd trade his rebounding for a jumper. -
QUOTE(Controlled Chaos @ Feb 20, 2008 -> 09:41 PM) I just started watching it this season. I needed to know what all the hype was about. I saw they were having that rewind show, so I watched it and I've been hooked ever since. The flashbacks had me confused as hell in the begining..cause I was like WTF is going on. Did htey have Flashbacks on all the previous seasons or is this the first. up until the last episode of last season there was a flashback for a character in every show. it provided context and gave you a better idea of who these people were. this season, most of what you are seeing are flash forwards to the future. the whole storytelling convention of lost is one of the big pulls for me. i've always been a fan of non-linear storytelling, but this show has just taken it to a new level. also, if you are just starting now i really would try to put in the time and work through some of the first few seasons on dvd. i didn't start watching the show when it came on the air, but heard the buzz and got the first season. i burned through season one and two pretty quickly and last year was the first i watched "live." but, i think there is value to seeing how we got to this point.

QUOTE(whitesoxfan99 @ Feb 20, 2008 -> 09:39 PM) Brian Carlwell has left Illinois' basketball team and will seek a transfer. Really too bad what has happened to him. He had a ton of potential coming out of HS but between the accident and the injuries this year he has actually regressed. I hope he does well somewhere else. i'll give fathom credit for calling this a long time ago. i disagreed at the time but he was right. it is unfortunate and i wish carlwell the best. this makes the team even more thin up front next year, which really does not help. it does help to explain the continued recruiting of bigs. -

QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Feb 20, 2008 -> 02:14 AM) Unnamed source says IU is most likely to suspend Sampson now with the expectation that he'll be terminated in the near future after a more detailed investigation is completed. hmm. that sounds about right, although it won't help the program to have that kind of ambiguity lingering into the summer. may be unavoidable, though. -
QUOTE(IlliniKrush @ Feb 20, 2008 -> 12:32 AM) I had doc's post highlighted and was going to post *click*, then went to page 2. The thing with Gottheil was his test was nothing like what he taught, it was all application and figuring s*** out on the actual test. Didn't like half the class get a C or worse for him usually? Or a very high number fail? I remember hearing something like that. yeah, i can guarantee i got a C or worse. econ was not my thing. probably explains my inability to keep my personal finances in order... and lol and SnB and Krush bringing up *click*. that is just awesome. you guys have taken me back today.

QUOTE(CanOfCorn @ Feb 19, 2008 -> 09:29 PM) Please refer to post above yours... hmm. that doesn't sound familiar, although i've forgotten a lot about my freshman year, LOL. it was that kind of year.
-
ok, i just checked the school site and gottheil was actually an econ prof. somehow i was confusing him with the classic civilization professor who taught mythology. but seeing gottheil's photo reminded me of him as well. he was good and made a subject i loathed tolerable. although i don't think i had him until my sophomore or junior year, 92 or 93. now it's going to bother me on the mythology prof.

NBA to hold outdoor game in preseason
thedoctor replied to greasywheels121's topic in Alex’s Olde Tyme Sports Pub
geez, it's not like they were planning on holding the nba finals on a plain in kansas. -
QUOTE(SnB @ Feb 19, 2008 -> 08:24 PM) *click* eskimos, canada...... yessir he is, i had him freshmen year and still teaches those classes. The majority of people on this campus had to go through the legend that is gottheil. good for him. i'd kind of figured he'd have retired now since he seemed older when i had him back in 91. he did seem to have boundless energy, though.
-
QUOTE(SnB @ Feb 19, 2008 -> 03:33 PM) gottheil? exactly. dude was a trip. is he still around? his class was perfect for foellinger because it was part class, part performance.

great idea. i've been hoping to see them do this for years. i know it wouldn't be feasible, but it would be sweet if they'd do one at rucker park or something. -
when i was at u of i i had quite a few classes in foellinger auditorium, which was a big building at the head of the quad. the room itself was massive, and it did have a balcony as well. usually where i sat was dictated by the class. i had a roman mythology course with a really great professor who was very into it. for his class i always tried to be up front. for econ, which i loathed, i was usually up top in the balcony.

a few notes on how lost will be handled in the aftermath of the writer's strike. this may have been posted already, and if so my apologies. eight episodes were completed before the strike. we are three episodes into this season and four more episodes will air up until march 13. the show then goes on hiatus for six weeks, and returns with the eighth already completed episode on april 24. apparently that episode worked better as a premiere so they elected to hold it to launch the "second" season. the following week, on may 1, lost will be pushed back to a 10 p.m. time slot following grey's anatomy. from that point, there will be five more episodes this year. because of the strike, there will be 13 total episodes instead of the 16 initially planned. the show's creators said they will work the three additional episodes in over the course of the final two seasons, so we will indeed get the 48 they planned after last season.

it's difficult to judge league strength because everyone has a different measure as to what they consider the main factor in making the determination. you have your rpi or pomeroy-type rankings, you can point to the top-25 rankings, you can cite records against top-25 teams, or even tournament performance. all of those have some validity, but usually each will yield a different answer. i tend to go with some of the computer rankings because they do factor in more disparate elements instead of hanging a whole hypothesis on one or two factors. this year i would probably put the big ten behind some other leagues. now, that is not to say that a big ten team can't or won't make a big tournament run. does that validate the league as a whole? i don't know. i will say that i think at the beginning of the season you saw some big ten teams taking bad losses. that, coupled with the decline of ohio state and illinois (two programs that usually generate a lot of national attention) has given the league an image problem it isn't likely to shake this year. but i also think that going forward, you will see the league's image improve. i'd anticipate the osu and illinois drop-offs being short when you consider the improved talent they have in upcoming recruiting classes. wisconsin will remain steady because bo just does a helluva job year-in and year-out of crafting winning teams. purdue has a great one in painter and i think that michigan, iowa, and minnesota all upgraded with their recent coaching hires. the jury is out on what will happen with indiana in coming seasons, but overall i think the league will improve in the next few seasons. -
Bears Cut Moose/Re-sign A. Brown
thedoctor replied to whitesoxfan101's topic in Alex’s Olde Tyme Sports Pub
while i'm not at all heartbroken to see moose go, it's not like there's a stable of capable back-ups waiting to take his place. our wr corps could end up being: mark bradley, rashied davis, devin hester, marty booker, fringe nfl scrap heap guy/rookie low round draft choice. ouch. -
QUOTE(Vance Law @ Feb 18, 2008 -> 07:41 PM) We shall see what happens. I don't like how Walker batting coached Konerko into a subpar year especially after he made him have 3 consecutive very good years. Bad strategy on Walker's part, he should have just made him have a good year. I did, however, like it when Dye wasn't a good hitter anymore in the first half of the season, Walker decided to batting coach him into have a great second half. That's the kind of batting coaching I want to see out of Walker. And Walker's been pretty consistent in batting coaching Thome to do well for 2 straight years which is a smart strategy that I hope he sticks with. A.J. should have a good year because it looks like Walker is alternating years of good batting coaching and then bad batting coaching with him.
