Cease To Padres per Passan
CaliSoxFanViaSWside replied to Chicago White Sox's topic in Pale Hose Talk
I think I already answered this question in another post you didn't see yet . I'm just saying be open to acquiring still youngish higher floor guys like Lux , not necessarily Lux. You say he'd be the headliner, others say 3rd piece . These teams do have other options to trade their unwanted talent. Lux might not be the Dodgers starting SS in 2024 but he will be starting for someone, perhaps the Brewers. But he would be a good guy to instantly start at 2nd base for the Sox and he have 2 years to establish high trade value . Would be great if he could do it right away. In the first 90 games of the season in 2022 he was hitting .300 with over .800 OPS. Either way you'd be spreading out the prospect acquisitions over a longer period of time getting a chance to see which prospect of ours and other teams develop. This is a continuing philosophy that has nothing to do with winning a lot of games in the next 2-3 years despite the BS spewing from Reinsdorf's mouth or Getz calling it a retool. -

I never said getting prospects isn't a good thing. It's a very good way to keep the talent flowing to the parent club. The Sox couldn't continue doing that thanks to being too good while they were rebuilding and not getting higher picks. The Astros at least tanked properly. Now you have the draft deck stacked against you because of anti tanking draft rules. So it actually may behoove the Sox to find other ways to acquire minor league talent such as flip candidates . Kelenic would've been a guy like that to take a chance on. The Braves ,as good as they are , still saw a need for him. We are not realistically 2 years from competing. There are no unnecessary steps when it comes to acquiring talent. How fast the Sox are looking to compete should be irrelevant now. They need quality and quantity because the talent on the 40 and in Charlotte is dog s%*#. Getz has been acquiring quantity to fill out the starting rotationan MI and C depth. But soon he'll have to start getting creative to acquire the quality . After Cease is gone it's pray Soroka or Feddes can establish value and Soroka has only a year to do it and Fedde 2. We shouldn't be adverse to acquring higher floor players with only 3 or 4 years of control when Robert getting injured for a lengthy period again may ruined your road to respectability by 2026 timeline. After Cease the trade candidates plummets unless you're counting on Eloy, Moncada, Vaughn, Kopech or Benintendi to really beef up their value by the trade deadline. -

A bunch of prospects that turn into gold to bring the Sox back to .500 by 2026. They'll have no starting pitching and holes at just about every position. -

Sometimes 3 years of a 26 yr old former Minor League Player of the year will work out better than a bunch of 23 -25 yr old prospects who may not have established themselves yet as AAA All Stars. Point being how do you establish who is better than Lux? I had people here tell me last year Outman wasn't ranked therefore guys like Busch and Vargas were better. 1 year later one had 4.4 fWar and the other 2 spent a lot of time in the minors again. 6 years of control of a guy who doesn't pan out means nothing whereas 3 years of another guy who has been through the struggles already to prove he can hit MLB pitching can end up being a better deal. These things are not easy to decide. I'm sure the Dodgers would love to dump Busch on the Sox. He has no path to playing with them. They aren't a team that keeps guys who can't field. They rather give up Busch or maybe Vargas ahead of Lux because Lux may start for them just like Outman was going to start for them last year. -

Yes but some of us have learned to not take it all too seriously. Win lose whatever I don't have all the answers and neither does anyone gnashing their teeth. So I'm just saving my teeth and my sanity. It's really nothing to get worked up over. But it is fun to observe it. The whole Justin Fields saga is good podcast TV. -

Lots of "ifs" as always. I'm good with seeing how the winter turns out and see how Getz is playing this. I'm not expecting it to turn out the way many of you expect or wish for . It's usually doesn't. I'll still be a Sox fan and hope for the best along with the rest of you. -

I'm not sweating it out. I could give a s%*# about rumors. When it happens it happens. The Sox have a long way to go to become revelent again. When he is traded even if you are happy or displeased about the return why does it matter? We'd have to wait another couples years waiting for prospects to develop in a system not known for developing lately. It's a lot gnashing of teeth over stuff we can't control with an owner in charge who doesn't care about you or winning in any other way but his, which has proven to be a winning formula only for mediocrity. -

So you don't think that if Lux comes back strong he wouldn't be worth trading for, then flipping and getting back even more than he's possibly worth now ? There are times to take chances on players . You cannot keep pretending that prospects acquired are going to work out. Most of them don't. Some assurance because of previous MLB abilities isn't a bad idea. This attachment to prospects only is silly. Contenders pay for quality not dreams when they need a bat or a pitcher when they have a chance to win. There are others way to get better than waiting for a bunch of prospects to all get good at the same time. -

The Dodgers are smarter than MLB. I think they'd take MLB to court and win if you base it on the fact anything MLB does regarding that issue in the future could be seen as being aimed directly at the Dodgers especially if they try to make it retroactive. -

Not sure I'd call it a travesty. With the Dodgers it's difficult to pick out who would be a headliner among their prospects. Even after missing all of 2023 Lux might be the Sox 2nd or 3rd best hitter and a sorely needed LH bat and could play SS, 2nd or LF. In 2022, before dealing with a neck injury, Lux seemed to have taken that next step at the plate. Anchoring the 9th spot in the order, Lux hit .307 with a .817 OPS in the first 90 games. His production did teeter towards the end of the year, but he showed the skills that made him a former Minor League Player of the Year. He just turned 26 and has 3 years before he reaches Free Agency in 2027 Among the other Dodgers who could be a part of a package you have Miguel Vargas 22 RH LF, 2nd, 1st, Diego Cartaya- RH C, Landon Knack-26 RHP , Nick Frasso-25 RHP, Gavin Stone-25 RHP, Trey Sweeney-23 LH SS, Josue De Paula 19 LH OF, A ball last year, Andy Page-23 RH OF,Ryan River 25-RHP, Kyle Hurt-RHP, Michel Busch-26-DH,1st,3rd,2nd. #1 or 2 depending where you look: Dalton Rushing 22 C,1st, A+level in minors. Dodgers may also be looking to trade for the 1 year Corbin Burnes has left from the Brewers or use any of these prospects and/or Lux to get Adames from the Brewers too. -

I thought Lux was probably going to be the Dodgers starting SS. At least thats what the Dodgers GM said a week ago. Of course they just might be pumping up his value. https://dodgersnation.com/dodgers-gm-confirms-plan-for-gavin-lux-to-be-starting-shortstop-in-2024/2023/12/03/ Rosenthal had mentioned that the Dodgers might trade Lux to the Brewers for Willie Adames . Lux isnt as good at SS as Adames but he could play 2nd base. https://theathletic.com/5116877/2023/12/06/mlb-rumors-dodgers-reds-braves/ 12/6/23 Rosenthal Winter Meetings article. -
Of course it's not that simple . Take the way you did RF. You have Sheets at -1.4 . So you're saying Sheets played 118 games in RF in 2023 and in those games he was a -1.4 fWar which I assume is his total War (offense & defense) playing RF. So what about the times anyone else played RF? Where is 2023 Colas fWar when he played RF ? I think to get the full War you have to have it for all 162 games of actual WAR in 2023 at every position vs actual projected War in 2024 at all positions which isn't possible because you don't know who will be playing RF next year. You used Colas .2 projection for 97 games in RF in 2024 to conclude that as a whole RF is projected to have a 1.6 net WAR increase for 2024. The fact is doing what you did makes no sense at all. We have no idea if Colas is going to play 97 games in RF and how much WAr he will have as if he's the only one who will be playing there and come to the conclusion that the position as a whole will be 1.6 War better than last year. No one bothers to check what you are doing. Projection systems can't be used to compare one players real stats in 118 games against another player's projected stats in 97 games and conclude that the position as a whole is projected to be better or worse for the whole season. The only ones that make any sense are the ones where the same player is projected to be at the same position for roughly the same amount of games covering the majority of the season . Robert vs Robert, Benintendi, Vaughn and Eloy.
-
True enough about Robert. He'll be in a position where any selective hitter with his talent could easily get 100+ walks next year . But we all know he's not that selective. It's his biggest weakness which was a reason why he started off last year so poorly.

Morosi linked Whit to White Sox in Dec23
CaliSoxFanViaSWside replied to Sleepy Harold's topic in Pale Hose Talk
Chuck's been angling for Merrifield since last off-season. He must've been thrilled when Morosi brought him up and Chuck got to talk to Morosi and interview Merrifield . -
The more competition between players of questionable talent the better. May the best men win.
-
That's the main reason why I didn't think Busch would be in a Dodger trade. But at some point he'll have to acquire guys who can play some offense and defense. I love LH savages as much if not more than you do but all hit no field shouldn't be a priority unless you can get rid of Eloy and/or Vaughn first.
-
Yes once the Bummer trade happened and the more we heard Getz speak I was pretty confident that Perez and Merrifield wouldn't be playing for the Sox mostly for monetary reasons, Perez' defense and Nicky Lopez. This year is about Getz putting his stamp on the Sox regardless of the upcoming losses. Now I'll see if Baltimore moves Santander and see if they get any kind of pitching for him or if they wait til the deadline. I really want to see the talent acquired for Cease to see if there's a major league player involved that can be spun off or strictly prospects. Sooner or later the Sox need quality bats who might also be able to play defense and play fast, something I've wanted for years. And if LH with power even better !

CaliSoxFanViaSWside replied to caulfield12's topic in Pale Hose Talk
It doesn't but it the point was that Ohtani as a Cub would make it make it way worse . If the Sox are on life support now but still have fans visiting it in the hospital what happens when all but the most diehard Sox fans become Cubs fans ? The Cubs would own 90% of the city. No one would care if JR sold or moved the Sox . That kind of sounds a lot worse to me than another 5 years of JR. Maybe it's splitting hairs ,rearranging deck chairs on the Titanic and all that but the only thing keeping the Sox viable as a franchise if fans that care about them. You take that away and the franchise on life support dies of neglect. -

You've been on this board long enough to know that fan interest is driven by a team with a huge superstar. There are plenty of people who became White Sox fans because Frank Thomas. Then there are the many wheres it's a family tradition for better or worse. The only thing that makes an impressional kid override what he is learning from his family is what he's hearing from everyone besides family. That would be the internet, TV, radio , friends, classmates all raving about Ohtani. Good luck having any Sox fans created when the world's biggest superstar in baseball is a Cub. I think you have vastly underestimated the impact of Ohtani . If you think the Sox are irrelevant now it could be sooo much worse . Reinsdorf has had the team and operated it the same way for 40+ years. How much worse is more of the same actually going to make it ? -

Surprised at you. Yea Reinsdorf living a extraordinarily long life isn't beneficial to Sox fans but certainly not worse than Ohtani ending up on the North side at a time when the Sox have bottomed out and in 5 or 6 years the lease with the city runs out ? Sorry I don't usually keep up with the Reinsdorf dealings with the city of Chicago so I might not be stating it corrently. They are also at a critical point of getting another TV contract. If the Cubs got Ohtani at this critical time in the future of the White Sox you might as well just say adios White Sox. Good luck in whatever city you end up in. Were talking about over 100 years of Chicago traditions, ties that bind generations of families and friends together ending . Even if Reinsdorf passed away today, there's no guarantee the Sox would get a better owner. We're not talking about rivalries with baseball opponents this is about the survival of the White Sox franchise in Chicago. That's how bad Ohtani as a Cub would be.
