The Wainwright to the Cards Thread
Remember August 15th when the Cards were coming off the long Covid outbreak vacation and swept the Sox in a DH ? Wainwright pitched 5 innings 3 hits 1 run . We were disgusted that something like that could happen. Out of all the boppers we had in the lineup that day Mendick got 2 of the 3 hits off him. The Sox went 2-8 against Cleveland last year. Wainwright pitched a complete game against the Indians 8/30/20. 9 innings 4 hits 2 ER 9K. He was remarkable consistent in 2020 only gave up 4 ER once in his 10 starts .The other 9 it was either 1 ,2 or 3 ER. Even with bad offenses a pitcher not on his game will get lit up. 65 IP in 10 starts meant he was going deep into games also. Not too shabby for a geezer.

Actually you used the wrong thing. If you click on player similarity under the picture of the player, that is the more accurate similarity which is Aaron Civale of the Indians and Chris Bassitt of the A's. These similarity are based on speed and movement of pitches . What you were looking at was batted ball profile.

Who would that be? Luck as much as anything will determine if anyone in the Sox price range will catch lightning in a bottle . Last year it was Taijuan Walker $2M signing.

Might as well put this one on ice too.

MLB 2020-21 off season catch all
I think if there was a poll about all the leftover SP and you only included pitchers who seem likely to get 1 year deals in the $5-10M range Richards might be at the top of that list . There's just a lot of choices and opinions. One choice is as likely to be as good or as bad as another.

All we should go by is his last 30 starts when he was healthy and damn good. The Sox aren't looking for a stud here unless they think they can trade for one. You are not getting anyone very healthy or reliable and recent history should mean more than anything .The Sox are looking for depth and among the candidates everyone has issues. This board will not be pleased with just about anyone the Sox sign in the $5-8M range. The guys with the best stats from last year also have the highest ZIPS projections for 2021 and that includes Wainwright.

Yes he is and I said his age didn't make him a strong option already. The reply basically was to those who said he was garbage . You said he was decent so I wanted to point out it was better than decent and garbage and it's been for longer than just 2020.

I'll answer my own question at least among NL pitchers. My cutoff point for a low 3's ERA is 3.25 . Kyle Hendricks, Yu Darvish, Brandon Woodruff, Trevor Bauer, Zac Gallen, Aaron Nola, Zack Wheeler, Luis Castillo, Zach Davies, Dinelson Dimet , Jake DeGrom. If I lower the IP limit to 59 then Corbin Burnes makes the list. Notice anything about that list ? Some of the best pitchers in the NL and Wainwright was on it and that good run was a carry over from his last 20 starts of 2019.

This but again his last 30 starts between 2019 and 2020 have been very good. He doesn't have to be a horse and go 6 1/2 innings . 5 is probably good if it allows his arm more rest. How many guys last year threw 65.2 innings in only 10 starts with an ERA in the low 3's ?

Even though he is going to be 40 and therefore not a strong option I'd like to point out that he hasn't been garbage for a while. Over the final 20 starts of 2019 he went 10–5 with a 3.81 ERA, including a 10-start run from late July to mid-September when he went 6–2 with a 2.43 ERA. In the playoffs against the Braves he went 7 ⅔ innings, no runs, four hits, two walks, eight strikeouts, 120 pitches. He was better than decent in 2020. 10 starts 65.2 innings pitched . That's 6 1/2 innings per start. Good ERA ,great WHIP. Wainwright is also a very solid human being. Wainwright and Richards seem the 2 likeliest choices based of former relationships with Sox personnel . Richards may disappear to the Red Sox.

MLB 2020-21 off season catch all
I'd say Walker is the healthiest just going by a full recovery from TJ which made him miss most of 2018 and 2019 . He put up very good results in the 2nd half of last year. His peripherals won't wow anyone but before TJ he didn't have any problems going 150-160 innings. He's also the youngest of those mentioned by 3 years+ Paxton seems like he might be headed to TJ based on what kept him out last year. Hamels is ancient no need to take a chance on him. As other have pointed out Richards injury history is terrible but he did pitch almost as many innings as Walker and his peripherals are more pleasing. His spin rates are about as good as you'd want but maybe that's why he's always hurt. Walkers ZIPS projections are also the best among those 4.

Foodies: Sox/Giolito discussing an extension?????
Are you Tony LaRussa ? Are you going to say tell everyone if they were sincere or not ? Accountable to who ? I don't get it . It there someone out there who holds GM's accountable for everything they said that doesn't happen like only winning one world series instead of multiple ones ?
-
Foodies: Sox/Giolito discussing an extension?????
You knew I meant World Series. Oh ha nvm Hahn speak, meaning he could mean winning the AL counts as a championship .
-
Foodies: Sox/Giolito discussing an extension?????
You really believe that ? Who is going to hold them accountable for only winning 1 championship rather than 2 ? I'd be thrilled with one. The Braves, Tigers, the Indians , Dodgers ,lots of very good teams compete year after year without winning the big one. It took the Braves forever and the Dodgers too. Dodgers were in the playoffs about 12 times in the 21st century before finally winning one. Starting in 1991 to 2005 the Braves made the playoffs every year and only won 1 World Series.

Foodies: Sox/Giolito discussing an extension?????
Yup . It's just baseball . I wouldn't call it a White Sox thing per se. The Royals, Nationals,Indians all had relatively short windows recently. Some won it all some didn't. The Astro's and Cubs windows were a little longer and they won it but didn't their Championships come by the 3rd year of their competitive windows ? Dodgers have had a wide open open for a lot of years and finally won it but they are like a machine in scouting , player development and high payroll. Yankees and Red Sox are the same way in the AL . Yanks are still searching for their title while the Red Sox got 3 of them. The Giant's held their window open a while and also got 3 championships.

Don't get ahead of yourself . You took a lot of flack for your comments like this about Covid . Let it play out.

This is exactly how I see it also. I'd love to be wrong and it's truly sad that the window is widest during a pandemic and labor strife but that's the reality of it.

Yea it's twitter. Anyone who puts their faith in these guys and who get's disappointed when things don't come true is gullible as heck or doesn't understand how much people want to feel relevant or the nature of Twitter and how it relates to that need. Treat it as entertainment and nothing else. I don't care who they are or who their sources are and try to analyze why they do what they do. Rumors are fun to talk about . I have no desire to attempt to explain the origin or reason for said rumors.

Hank Aaron Passes Away, was 86.
https://www.mlb.com/braves/news/hank-aaron-baseball-legend-dies I link this because there is a great video with Matt Vasgergian and Harold Reynolds interviewing Bob Kendrick, President of the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum. It is unimaginable for any of us to truly comprehend being in the on deck circle thinking you might get gunned down . Kendrick made point of saying how difficult baseball is under the best of circumstances yet Aaron endured and excelled under the worst of circumstances.

A sad day for baseball . A great player and more importantly a great person who overcame hatred with dignity and perseverance , the same way he played baseball.

Eloy has decent speed. However he doesn't get very good jumps. I'm sure the Sox have been working on that but so far results aren't good. 1st step has to improve and one more thing . I don't know how good his hip mobility is. I get the impression it isn't that good because he doesn't pull the ball very much when he hits. That doesn't mean he's a bad hitter obviously because some guys fly open with that front side hip and that can make you look terrible. But when you do pull the ball you open up your front hip a little and your back hip fires to the ball. Eloy has very little back hip movement . He hits his longest HR's to CF because he is a big strong guy and the weight transference from back foot to front foot is easiest when other body movement is minimal. People sometimes describe Eloy as an uncoordinated dork . Obviously his hand eye coordination is great but having strong loose hips is key in coordination. On defense that 1st step is key which has a lot to do with turning your body quickly and efficiently which is dependent on being in ready position , an efficient 1st step which relies on technique and opening your hips quickly. I think he needs core work specifically focused on hip flexibility otherwise down the road I fear he will have back problems.
