40-man roster decisions and the Rule 5 Draft
QUOTE (Rowand44 @ Nov 17, 2017 -> 06:15 AM) Ya, I'm absolutely protecting Micker. On the Sox podcast on CSN Chicago Aaron Roward said Aldolfo's arm in RF is up there with Vladdy Guererro and Jesse Barfield.

Shohei Otani is likely coming to the USA
QUOTE (GenericUserName @ Nov 16, 2017 -> 09:12 AM) We just traded away more international bonus space, so I don't even know how much we have left. We got a pretty good prospect, so it may have been the rest of our pool. Apparently Seattle's #8 prospect who throws very hard, reportedly hit 104 once . http://www.nbcsports.com/chicago/white-sox...-intriguing-arm

Jim Rivera R.I.P.
QUOTE (Lip Man 1 @ Nov 14, 2017 -> 06:20 PM) He was absolutely one of a kind: April 10, 1961 –Sox outfielder “Jungle” Jim Rivera was always good for the unexpected. Right before the Sox played in Washington to open the season, President John Kennedy threw out the first ball. Rivera came up with it and was escorted to the President’s box where both he and vice president Lyndon Johnson signed the ball. After Rivera looked at it he said to the President, “You’ll have to do better than that John. This is a scribble I can hardly read!” So Kennedy in block letters spelled out his name on the baseball. Oh… the Sox went on to win the game 4-3 getting single runs in the seventh and eighth innings. It was the first game the ‘new’ Washington Senators ever played. April 22, 1955 – It was the first time the White Sox ever played in Kansas City and outfielder “Jungle” Jim Rivera would make it a memorable night. Rivera’s home run helped the Sox beat the A’s 5-3 but it was his comment afterwards to former first lady Bess Truman that made the most news. She attended the game and then when introduced, Rivera said, “I’m sure sorry my home run beat your club but it was a helluva wallop eh, Bess?” and that catch he made in Game #5 of the 1959 World Series saving the Sox 1-0 win over Sandy Koufax is one of the greatest catches in World Series history. Over the shoulder after a long run against a murderous background of all white shirts and dresses. R.I.P. to a guy who played the game hard...VERY hard. Before 2005 the 1959 White Sox were the only Sox team in my lifetime to make it to the World Series. I remember researching them in HS before the internet made research easy . I knew my HS English teacher was a Sox fan too so I wrote a paper comparing the 59 team to maybe the 75 or 76 team. RIP Jungle Jim.

Abreu snubbed of Silver Slugger
QUOTE (Jenksy Cat @ Nov 10, 2017 -> 08:29 AM) Wait the Slugger is a vote? I thought it was purely statistical. That's stupid. It's a vote from MLB managers and coaches. So like any vote, even among guys you think would know better or delve into stats more, yes, the more name worthy candidates win it usually from winning teams. Seager won over Cozart and Goldschmidt over Votto. There are also other debatable winners.

2017-2018 NFL Thread
QUOTE (bmags @ Nov 1, 2017 -> 09:56 AM) If that's the case...show that angle in the official NFL review. They are pointing to something they in no way could say is showing the ball on the ground. It's a disgrace. Total disgrace. They say the ball is loose just because the defender has an arm in there but that doesn't make it loose and the other " ball is loose" the picture is blurry , can't see the ball and if you could see the ball they have the yellow arrow in the way. Just add insult to injury why don't you NFL.

ALCS: Yankees vs. Astros
QUOTE (2005thxfrthmmrs @ Oct 18, 2017 -> 08:48 PM) I'm with you, I hated the trade and this postseason did not change that. It did not take much to see than Kahnle's turnaround wasn't a fluke. Robertson may not have been valuable on a rebuilding team, but definitely earns his salary and more on a playoff team. Should the Sox have hung onto Kahnle ? Held out for more ? If Kahnle doesnt pitch well next year, which is wont to happen with BP pieces, then Sox get 2nd guessed. Perhaps you think Frazier and Robertson alone could've got Rutherford ?

ALCS: Yankees vs. Astros
QUOTE (iWin4Ron @ Oct 18, 2017 -> 05:21 PM) I'm starting to really root for these Yanks. I did not want houston to win, cause f*** them! But seeing Frazier/Robertson/Kahnle do well and have fun is nice. Seeing Judge and Sanchez perform is also cool. This team has a good spirit and it's fun to watch. Besides, the other 3 options kinda suck (I'm somewhat partial to the Cubs due to rooting for Chicago... but they seem dead in the water). Yup nice to see recent former Sox doing well in the playoffs and again yea f*** the Astros . They didn't want Q or Sox bullpen pieces and I hope they continue the choke. But I should probably thank the Asstros for not wanting Q since getting Jimenez might have been the best possible return.

The Luck Factor: 2017 White Sox
Well this just illustrates to me how important it is to have a complete understanding of batted ball metrics and why I usually argue with those who only use BABIP to promote their theories of "luck" .There are just too variables at play to just use BABIP to understand hitting and why being an astute observer of the the game and using your eyes and common sense tells you almost as much as metrics do. I know it's impossible to watch all players all the time so metrics have merit but unless you come armed with a complete understanding of batted ball metrics I usually rather trust my eyes , experience and observations .

Rating the Rebuild: Completed Year 1 Edition
I sure hope when and if the Sox become contenders that we don;t trade as huge a talent as Eloy seems to be.

What do you take from the 2017 season?
So much good. 1st and foremost Avi .Awesome season Abreu looked so much better this year than the last few . Both he and Avi cut down on the K's . Yolmer, Leury Mo O, mo D Nicky D. Wow he he something when hr 1st game up. On base every game hitting HR's ; Walks, power and for a time batting averagwe, Finished dtyrong except for the late injury Moncada. thank God Abreu suggested the lighter bat and he turned things around. Not bad in the field either. Made some spectacular plays. Runs like the wind. Anderson's badness turned into goodness as he put the death of his buddy behind him. Started stealing bases too the 2nd half and was very good at it. Davidson did OK couple of walk off HR's. Maybe he gets better. Really couldn't have asked for better from Giolito and Lopez . SOme may quibble with this but I saw a lot to be impressed about. The trades brought in more talent. Eloy damn !! I'm forgetting Q already sorry to say. Even the bullpen started performing well the last couple weeks of the season , might even have a few usable pieces there. Signing Robert with a contribution from Renteria . Over all very pleased with Renteria . The Sox dugout was lively, Abreu stepped up into a leadership role. Bilingual manager is the wave of the future. Good communicator. Even slowed down on the bunts and started stealing bases which I was begging for. Renteria gets a B+ . Without naming names . The minor league top talent performed very well. Next year should be very interesting.

Trade avi in the offseason?
QUOTE (Lillian @ Sep 30, 2017 -> 03:05 PM) It was interesting to hear Hawk's take on Avi, in last night's broadcast, with "Whimpy". For what it's worth, and I know for some of you, not much, he was very positive. He said "You ain't seen nothin' yet" and that "he is just beginning to mature into the kind of player that he can be". He even stated that Avi was the "Closest thing to a legitimate 5 tool player, we've ever had". The craziest comment was that he still stands by his initial assessment, that he believes "Avi will ultimately become the greatest player in White Sox history!!" It was really "over the top". It's pretty clear that Hawk loves him. I think he said that the Avi trade may be the best in Sox history . Even Hawk isn't silly enough to suggest Avi will be better than Big Hurt.

Can Rodon become a quality mlb starter?
QUOTE (hi8is @ Sep 27, 2017 -> 10:13 PM) After you've been largely absent lately, you come back and drop a bomb like this... I love you, man. Some bomb. It's more a teaser than actual info. It's like tune into the next episode of as the Rodon turns. It doesn't make the info get here any faster.

Angels at Sox: Lopez hitting 99mph early
QUOTE (Thad Bosley @ Sep 27, 2017 -> 09:11 PM) SOX WIN! Nicky blast wins it for the Sox! ND having a nice series against the Angels . Commander Covey likely to be bombed tomorrow.

Angels at Sox: Lopez hitting 99mph early
Strange 5 th inning for Lopez . Fastball in 94-96 range a little slower than 1st 4 innings and falling behind 1-0 to most hitters rather than getting ahead 0-1. After the 3 run HR on what looked like a changeup , he finished up with a K of Trout back at 97-98 MPH.
-
Angels at Sox: Lopez hitting 99mph early
Lopez through 4 , 0 R 1H 1BB 5K Getting 1st pitch strike on just about everyone. Fastball still in 96-98 range
-
Angels at Sox: Lopez hitting 99mph early
Lopez K's the side including Trout and Upton.
-
Angels at Sox: Lopez hitting 99mph early
Lopez fastball to Calhoun to lead off 96-99 according to Angels broadcast.

Trade avi in the offseason?
QUOTE (Jake @ Sep 24, 2017 -> 01:29 PM) Avi clearly has a ton of power. You can measure that, you know, and he hits the ball as hard as anyone on this team. Whether he will hit a bunch of home runs is another question. Yep huge power . I mean he is a huge guy, strong as an ox and his HR's when hit to left center have traveled 440- 460 feet enough to know you don't hit them that far without having power. Power and the ability to translate the power into HR's are 2 different things.

Moncada's Future Role
QUOTE (zisk @ Sep 24, 2017 -> 06:46 AM) YM walks a lot. TA never walks. I agree with the guy who thinks TA would be best suited for #6 hole. Bat Moncada lead off and you might end up with a Ricky Henderson type{from my lips to Gods ears}. For #2 slot the next 2-3 years it might be covered very well by Nick Delmonico. His career OBP in the minors is 85 points higher than his BA because he's a patient hitter. He also could use that patience to give YM a chance to steal some bases. If ND turns out to be a .275 hitter with 60-70 walks and 40-50 XBH's for a few years while also making peanuts for a salary, that would be an incredible help. Long term the sox have several in house candidates for #2 hole. Luis Gonzalez is a guy I would keep an eye on. I was also thinking Nicky as the 2 behind Moncada. Not only does having the top 2 with good eyes but also need that 2 hitter to be a good fastball hitter since with Moncada on 1st the 2 hitter would see more fastballs. I know most don't like Davidson and with TA so hot if he can continue that he could be behind Avi , Abreu as the 3, 4 ,5 in the order. Depends on when we see Eloy . If Sox keep Abreu and Avi and Eloy hits right away and Delmonico can keep his OBP above .350 the Sox have a potentially potent 1-6.
