QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Dec 13, 2007 -> 11:58 AM) That guy from the Mets supposedly took over as a big distributor for a lot of teams after the Feds killed off Balco. Just because he didn't directly work with the Cardinals doesn't mean he wouldn't have had connections there. Okay. I guess I thought he supplied mostly Mets or ex-Mets -- just from reading Segui's stories, I assumed that was his m.o. But it makes sense that it could branch out from there.

QUOTE(Steve9347 @ Dec 13, 2007 -> 11:40 AM) Can a mod just move this to the MR thread? Maybe should have left a redirect in this forum. This seems distinct enough to merit a separate thread. Imho.

QUOTE(Brian @ Dec 13, 2007 -> 11:44 AM) Deadspin reported about a year about about Pujols. Glad no Big Hurt. I maybe too much of a sensi, but I kind of wish they omitted Daryl Kile. Guy has passed on. Deadspin retracted it, though. http://deadspin.com/sports/baseball/a-deep...rong-204519.php

IF Pujols is on that list, I wonder what the connection is. He hasn't been linked to BALCO, and I'm not sure how the Mets or Yanks source would be involved with him. Maybe the Florida clinic, but I'd be surprised that his name wouldn't have leaked out earlier. Or maybe another connection, although those are the only ones that I'd read about.

QUOTE(Hatchetman @ Dec 13, 2007 -> 11:22 AM) How in the hell is Luis Gonzalez not on that list? First, we can all wait a couple hours to see the real list. Not to say this one's wrong, but who knows? Second, THIS IS NOT GOING TO BE A COMPREHENSIVE LIST OF ROIDERS IN MLB. People need to get out of their heads this idea that the magic Mitchell will catch everyone. It's just a list of people named by other people who got caught. There will be hard evidence on some, but on others it may just be hearsay. We really need the details, not just the names. And even then, there'll be a lot -- A LOT -- more that aren't on the list.

Rangers non-tendered RHP Akinori Otsuka
jackie hayes replied to sayitaintso's topic in Sox Baseball Headquarters
QUOTE(iamshack @ Dec 13, 2007 -> 09:47 AM) Gagne actually pitched very well for the Rangers, and then netted them Kason Gabbard, David Murphy, and Engel Beltre from the Red Sox. I don't think signing Gagne was a negative experience at all for them. When did I say it turned out badly? I was only saying that it's possible that signing Gagne and handing him the closer role, when you already have a dominant closer, might -- might -- signal that you don't really have much confidence in that closer. Just throwing out another reason the Rangers might have for nontendering AO, that's all. -
Rangers non-tendered RHP Akinori Otsuka

QUOTE(iamshack @ Dec 13, 2007 -> 08:42 AM) I have a feeling his rehab isn't going quite as well as some are led to believe. Seems quite odd that they would non-tender him if he was completely healthy and they thought he could be effective. This is the team that signed Eric Gagne. Why would they non-tender Otsuka? Maybe the answer is in the question -- This is the team that signed Gagne. Maybe they never trusted Otsuka that much to begin with, and now he's going to be 36 and coming off surgery. All just speculation, of course. I'm sure whatever contract he signs will have some incentives, but how much will he get in guaranteed money? $3 mil? Any guesses? -
QUOTE(witesoxfan @ Dec 12, 2007 -> 09:43 PM) And this speculation seems kinda pointless to me. Can't we wait, like, less than 24 hours? Agreed.

QUOTE(Kalapse @ Dec 12, 2007 -> 10:11 PM) I'd put money on it that 15-20 players named will be no name Mets bench players. (AKA: Timo) There's going to be an awful lot of disappointed people when the report is made public tomorrow. Exactly. Mitchell got info from 2 or 3 suppliers out of, at least, dozens. This list of names that everyone's looking forward to is going to be just that tiny fraction of users unlucky enough to use the guy who got caught. And it's a shame that such expectations are being built up for this report. It's an arbitrary sample of users, but you know some people will treat not being named as an exoneration.

QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Dec 10, 2007 -> 03:37 PM) On Maybin/Fields, if nothing else, I'll add Baseball America's 2007 list. No matter how much stock you put in these rankings, let's just say that the difference in value between the #6 prospect on their list and the #45 prospect on their list (Esp. when the #6 is only 20 years old) is not Jerry Owens. Yup. AND Maybin had a great year, AND he's 4 or 5 years younger. Florida wouldn't even consider this deal.

QUOTE(AWhiteSoxinNJ @ Dec 10, 2007 -> 01:58 PM) I believe Quentin will be the 4th OF and the part time DH for when Thome needs a day off. No f'n way.

QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Dec 10, 2007 -> 01:26 PM) That's because his numbers against Neal Cotts are ridiculous. I think he literally homers every time he faces Cotts. Lol, yes. 3/3, 3 hrs.
-
The good thing is that he mashes lhp. The bad thing is that that's all he does, and he can't play center. He'll be a decent platoon guy for someone, but there's no room/fit for him on the Sox.

No love for Ga ga ga ga ga ga ga ga ga ga ga ga ga ga ga ga ga ga ga etc? It's too fun to not get a mention.

Despite being a Yankee, Cano doesn't put up spectacular numbers, partially b/c of where he hits in the lineup. The dropoff from him to Ellis/Kinsler(?)/Iwamura/Hill isn't that great. He's good, but I think you can find a decent substitute. The dropoff from Martin to Molina/AJ is pretty steep. Plus, LA showed that they'd run him out there until he dropped, which isn't great for him, but is great for a fantasy owner. (I'm just guessing who might be available in the draft.) They're both good players, but I think catcher is too shallow to pick Cano over Martin. Sizemore or Fielder is more of a tossup, imo.

Fay Vincent with an editiorial in the NYT blasting, and I mean blasting, the decision to enshrine former commish Bowie Kuhn and deny union head Marvin Miller. A summary: "This is a set of actions by little men making small-minded decisions." A mite personal... http://www.nytimes.com/2007/12/08/opinion/08vincent.html

QUOTE(Gregory Pratt @ Dec 7, 2007 -> 08:11 PM) Rodriguez and Sizemore Cano Why Cano? My first reaction is -- def Arod, def not Maggs. I'd go with Sizemore over Fielder, but they're both good (and it may depend on the type of league). Then I'd go with Martin. It's hard to find that kind of production in a catcher, especially the steals.

QUOTE(RockRaines @ Dec 7, 2007 -> 05:23 PM) I couldve sworn it was an ACL tear. The hit looked nasty. I don't even want to think about my knee moving that way. I was shocked to see him walking.

QUOTE(bighurt4life @ Dec 7, 2007 -> 01:49 AM) We already have a speedy lefty hitting CF and a speedy lefty hitting 2b (richar) if we're going to make a move for a bench player we need someone who can mash lefties to face the sabathias, kenny rogers, and santana's that we face multiple times a year in the central Now I don't recall the exact numbers, but I believe Willie hit something like .350/.415/.610 against lhp last year. Pretty close to that, anyway. Plus, he's ageless. Come home, Willie. -

QUOTE(witesoxfan @ Dec 6, 2007 -> 08:26 PM) Because Richar is better than him. And, honestly, why on earth would you even ask that question? What value does Willie Harris bring to the team that Danny Richar does not? What hope for the future does Harris bring that Richar does not? WHY ON EARTH DO PEOPLE WANT A NEW 2BMAN WHEN THE SOX ARE GOING TO BE TERRIBLE ANYWAYS? This is what gets to me about this site; why on earth would you search for a veteran replacement over the young player when neither is clearly superior or inferior to the other? It appears the Darin Erstad effect has taken over all of Soxtalk. If you were talking about anyone else... But this is Willie, wite. -
QUOTE(sircaffey @ Dec 6, 2007 -> 02:21 PM) Give me Jones as well. I third that. I would have been damn happy if we got Jones on this contract.

QUOTE(Pants Rowland @ Dec 6, 2007 -> 03:59 PM) Magglio has been a consistently good hitter for most of his career. He hits into too many double plays, but he also hits for a solid average and power. Yeah, obviously he's been good. Just as obvious is that he's never been this good. So what's your point?

QUOTE(Texsox @ Dec 6, 2007 -> 02:53 PM) The prices always look terrible when they sign, then in a couple years they are behind the curve. Rowand at $14 or $15 mil could look very cheap in a couple seasons. If Rowand hits .360 with an obp of .430 and a slg of almost .600, sure. Magglio had a freakishly good year. There's some contract inflation, of course. But this is more a case of the player's numbers luckily catching up to the contract. I wouldn't bet on too many of these from Maggs or Rowand.
