QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jan 4, 2013 -> 12:54 PM) Do you really want me to go after this? I'll need to get to it tomorrow since I have an eyeglass appointment today, but seriously I can go into it if people would like. Ooh yes, I like Balta lessons. It's like Mr. Rogers, but smarter and on Soxtalk.

QUOTE (Buehrle>Wood @ Jan 5, 2013 -> 02:07 PM) Illinois should be up by 50 right now. Hopefully they hang on. At one point I saw they were up 12 and were 1-10 from deep. I was confused.

Maybe Paul will go off for 45 again? From what I've read/seen this year, it seems like he's more consistent, but he was always a guy that could go for 40 or 4, and you didn't know which it would be. Where's that consistency coming from this year? Better shot selection? General improvement from the offseason? Groce's style better suits him?

Clemente's 3000th hit and the bat that he used
farmteam replied to RockRaines's topic in The Diamond Club
Wow, thanks for sharing this Rock. I'm going to have to go read one of that guy's books, the writing itself was fantastic. -
QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Jan 3, 2013 -> 10:48 PM) Tracy? Who is Tracy? I assume Mark Tracy, the guy the Sox got in exchange for KW Jr

Official 2012-2013 NCAA Football Thread
farmteam replied to knightni's topic in Alex’s Olde Tyme Sports Pub
QUOTE (Rex Hudler @ Jan 3, 2013 -> 10:19 PM) I missed it. Explain? http://collegefootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2...e-point-safety/ -
Michigan playing real well tonight. I kinda feel bad for Northwestern. At least 1/4 of the crowd at all their conference games is rooting for the away team.

QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Jan 3, 2013 -> 06:09 PM) So I had a really odd experience. 2 shows I havent watched were Band of Brothers and Homeland. Ive had some time off so I decided to watch them both. There is just something really odd watching Captain Frank Winters as Brody. You could also watch that show that was on NBC that I never watched that has Damian Lewis...Life, or something.

QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Jan 3, 2013 -> 07:03 PM) BOB is amazing. I'm actually watching the Pacific for the first time right now. Pretty good. Nowhere near BOB (which is just epic). Band of Brothers is so awesome. I've been meaning to watch the Pacific.

QUOTE (PlaySumFnJurny @ Jan 3, 2013 -> 04:55 PM) Those aren't the correct elements as I understand them. From what I gather (I haven't read the complaint), its an antitrust case, and those cases have special standing requirements; its not enough that a plaintiff has merely suffered an economic injury, it must have specifically suffered an injury of the sort the antitrust laws are designed to prevent (i.e., one resulting from anti-competitive activities such as price-fixing, monopolization, etc). The leading Supreme Court case has 'Brunswick' in the title. It appears the state's argument is that the NCAA's failure to follow its rules and procedures will cause the state economic harm. However, as I see it, the economic harm to be suffered (lost revenues to bars, restaurants, hotel's, vendors, etc) is the same that would be suffered by any state with a bad football team. Although the NCAA's sanctions may be cause of PSU being s***ty, the economic harm suffered as a result of the team being bad is no different than that being suffered in Illinois right now because of Tim Beckman. In any event, economic or not, that harm is not 'antitrust' harm; furthermore, the NCAA's actions may have harmed the team's ability to compete on the field, but they don't directly hinder or harm competition within the free markets. Therefore, because there's no antitrust harm or antitrust injury, there's no special antitrust standing. Or at least that's the argument here. Fascinating; wasn't aware of the special standing rules for antitrust cases. Just reinforces something I've been told countless times: the best response a lawyer can give anyone who asks them for advice is to go find a competent lawyer in that field in the applicable jurisdiction.

QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Jan 3, 2013 -> 02:49 PM) I thought they weren't allowed to come via cuts to other athletic programs but that it was still ultimately coming from the general athletics fund/budget, which is not state-funded? Oh, that sounds more accurate. I think you're right.

Look at the consternation I caused! QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Jan 3, 2013 -> 11:59 AM) Because at one time there was thought to be a risk. As the article stated, they are reviewing it to be certain there are no risks whatsoever. In the meantime, they have more important issues than whether or not Trixie can check her Facebook while the flight's landing. I turn my electronics off during take off and landing; it's not that big a deal to me. Intuitively, it always seemed like it was a rule that didn't make much sense, so my interest was piqued by an article going into greater detail about it.

I think Duke's right and we're all just living in the matrix. I'm totally all right with it as long as we get to reenact that badass scene in the first one where Neo and Trinity shoot up the lobby. StrangeSox, you can be Neo, and SS2K5 you can be Trinity...don't deny it, you two, you know you look good in tight leather.
-
I think PA would have standing; badger went through the elements and I agree it works. It helps the state (for standing) in that the sanctions were explicitly NOT allowed to come out of the athletics budget, I think.

I always figured that "no electronics during takeoff and landing" garbage was just that

State trying to make sperm donor pay child support
farmteam replied to BigSqwert's topic in The Filibuster
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jan 2, 2013 -> 06:20 PM) I don't see how anyone is going to support the plaintiffs here, but I might imagine that this is a gray area in the law in some states that could need to be cleaned up, particularly if he just answered an online ad of some sort in a way that isn't regulated. Could be, since the article said the case turns on the fact that the insemination wasn't performed by a doctor. I assume most inseminations that use a non-parent-donor's sperm do use doctors, so this doesn't affect most people. -

This kind of stuff drives me nuts. Democrats do it too; this happens to be a GOP example because that's what I stumbled upon in this article. http://www.cnn.com/2013/01/01/politics/fis...edmn_topstories

QUOTE (Rex Hudler @ Dec 31, 2012 -> 03:40 PM) I agree w/ Dakich that Oladipo has been Indiana's best player all season. Agreed. Hit some clutch shots today too. Hulls with possibly the worst performance of his career. Road wins in the Big Ten don't have to be pretty; I'll take it. Iowa's good. They should be competitive in the Big Ten this year, and I think they pretty much return everyone next year.

QUOTE (greasywheels121 @ Dec 31, 2012 -> 09:02 AM) I have to say NYE is one my least favorite holidays. You always feel obligated to do something, and you usually end up disappointed with what you do or don't do. Agreed. I'm probably happier telling myself I won't do anything, and then doing exactly that.

QUOTE (Buehrle>Wood @ Dec 31, 2012 -> 12:25 PM) Although I'm sure you'd prefer it boring, Iowa-IU could be fun too. We will see. Oh, I didn't mean to imply IU-Iowa wouldn't be fun. I was just referring to the games I didn't realize were today. Yeah, it definitely should be a good game. First true road game, we've lost 4 straight there, an improved Hawkeye squad...should be a good game. I expect to win, but it should be close, and while it would be an upset if Iowa wins, it wouldn't shock me either. It won't be a surprise if we come out flat, but we're in trouble if we do, as we won't be able to get back into the game as easily as most of our non-conference games.
-
QUOTE (Buehrle>Wood @ Dec 31, 2012 -> 11:37 AM) Didn't realize how many good games there were today. Oh wow, you're right. Cincy-Pitt, Gonzaga-Oklahoma St, Michigan St-Minnesota....

Apparently Tom Crean likes to try to help people get their car out of a ditch. Not surprised the kid skidded out there. 45 can get pretty twisty/turny east of Bloomington; there's no way I'd want to be on there in snow.

QUOTE (Rowand44 @ Dec 30, 2012 -> 08:47 PM) Ya Iowa at home will upset one of the big boys. Yeah, I'm just hoping it's not IU tomorrow. We've lost four straight there.
