  1. QUOTE (greg775 @ Nov 9, 2009 -> 10:52 PM) Sounds like we won the last WS title we had with starting pitching and big boppers. This time, KW wants to go back to the Go Go White Sox with little offense, manufacturing runs, but great starting pitching. Problem there is you need defense
  2. QUOTE (YASNY @ Nov 9, 2009 -> 11:10 PM) You can forget that dream rotation. Acquiring Halladay would cost at least one of Floyd or Danks. Exactly!
  3. Sporting News reporting Sox among suitors for Halladay. Does that make sense to anyone? GM meetings Sporting News staff reports Comments (0)More Login or register to post commentsPrinter-friendly versionMonday, Nov. 9, 2009 - 3:22 p.m. ET As the general manager meetings get under way in Chicago, Blue Jays righthander Roy Halladay and Padres first baseman Adrian Gonzalez will be among the most sought-after trade targets. The Toronto Star speculates the Rangers, Phillies, Angels, Dodgers, Cubs, White Sox, Rockies, Astros, Mets and Tigers are the teams expected to make a run at Halladay. A deal could come by the end of next month's winter meetings. Halladay was the subject of plenty of trade talk before the July 31 nonwaiver trading deadline this season, but no team met then-general manager J.P. Ricciardi's asking price. New general manager Alex Anthopoulos told the Star that he is open-minded to making a deal and that "I think (Halladay) stressed that his timeline for winning and ours may not mesh and may not match." The availability of Gonzalez will be another hot topic at the GM meetings. The San Diego Union-Tribune noted Gonzalez hit .285 with 130 homers and 400 RBIs in his first four full major league seasons, and he is owed only $10.25 million over the next two seasons. After that, however, he likely will be priced out of the Padres' plans. A source told the newspaper it is a matter of when (not if) the team will deal Gonzalez. And there already might be signs that a trade is coming. According to the Union-Tribune, the Padres didn't include Gonzalez on a brochure mailed to prospective season-ticket buyers and haven't begun talks about a long-term extension. The Red Sox, Dodgers and Mariners all have expressed interest in Gonzalez.
  4. Conventional wisdom says Flowers should play everyday at AAA to get ready for taking over from AJ in the future. I think there may be some real good options, Ivan Rodriguez is a pal of Ozzie's and then you have Olivo and Torrealba. Maybe even Jason Kendall if what you want is defense. I woud assume the bat would need to be from the right side though.I am betting Pudge gets a call from the Sox.
  5. QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Nov 9, 2009 -> 06:55 AM) There is a 0% chance that Bobby Jenks is non-tendered, barring some cataclysmic move on his part that makes his value absolutely nothing. If anything, he will be traded. Good relievers will command a lot of money, and even if Jenks is inconsistent and there are concerns with his weight, he's still good and will have value. JJ Putz was a huge part of the 3-way trade between the Mariners, Indians, and Mets last year, and he was coming off a very mediocre season with the Mariners. I am going to agree with you on this one. Sox brass like Jenks, but have given him some marching orders too. But, all things being equal I don't agree that there is a"glut" of quality relievers out there and moving Thornton into the closers role only creates another problem for the Sox bullpen.
  6. QUOTE (JPN366 @ Nov 9, 2009 -> 03:19 PM) Just an idea that popped into my head, discuss... There is medication for that type of thing now
  7. As I said in anothr post I see the Kansas City Royals as the new farm club for the Sox just like the Kansas City Athletics were seen in the 50's and 60's as the farm club of the Yankess
  8. From the Rosenblog « Follow the money | Main November 06, 2009 Sox dealing, Bulls d'ing up, Hawks blowing it Share | It’s official: The White Sox traded Chris Getz and Josh Fields for another version of A.J. Pierzynski. Mark Teahen hit .271 with 12 homers and 50 RBIs, so he actually hit worse than Pierzynski with similar power numbers. Combined, Pierzynski and Teahen still didn’t match the homer total of Jermaine Dye, who was just given a lovely parting gift of $950,000 after another second-half flameout. The Sox play in U.S. Homer-Happy Park. I don’t see how a gap hitter makes this all better. I also don’t see how the Sox make good on the rumored Chone Figgins love. If you have Teahen at third and Gordon Beckham at second with Figgins as one of the corner outfielders, you have no power outside of Carlos Quentin and Paul Konerko at first. Certainly not enough power for the Sox’s home park. Alex Rios was a disaster in center. Alexei Ramirez makes my head hurt. And while I’m with everyone else who loves Beckham, his projected 22-25 homers should be somewhat of a bonus, not a demand. If not Figgins, then what's the next-best rumor? The best part is, it’s only November and Sox general manager Kenny Williams has the trading version of ADHD. It’s not that I don’t like Teahen. He was a guy Sox fans always noticed. Sort of a Joe Randa with training wheels. Teahen has hit more homers and driven in more runs against the Sox than he has against any other opponent. I’ve always disliked these kinds of trades because Teahen doesn’t get to face Sox pitching anymore.
  9. QUOTE (Jenks Heat @ Nov 8, 2009 -> 03:57 PM) Starting each season knowing you have a very limted chance of competing has got to be tough and then when June rolls around and your season is over every year has got to be even harder unless you are Miek Sweeney then it is fine because your are on the IR anyway. On top of this Teahan was moved all over the place. I think Buddy Bell and Greg Walker are key in this. I think KC has become the Sox farm system same as the KC Athletics of the 50's and 60's were the Yankees
  10. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Nov 8, 2009 -> 02:26 AM) We have been talking about no money for a while now. That shouldn't be a surprise at all. We heard that and picked up Peavy and Rios. OK, I am willing to wait and see how things all work out as I have had my entire baseball fan life as a Chisox supporter. But, things we are seeing and hearing are troubling to me
  11. Troubling things here: The pkrase of the day in Sox management has switched fro "under the radar" to "you have to look at the projection" and "their profile" Plus here we go again about how much the Sox have valued a player from anothet team for several years. Addiiotnally now we are hearing there is "no money available"
  12. QUOTE (jphat007 @ Nov 6, 2009 -> 06:14 PM) Highest AVG and highest OBP (other than Thome) on a team whose offense sucked and we don't want to bring him back. Sounds like a plan!!!! Plus we lose two guys (Getz and Pods) who brought speed to the team. We must be headed in the right direction
  13. QUOTE (Ozzie Ball @ Nov 7, 2009 -> 05:20 PM) There's also the fact that the guy is a stud and could probably play any position on the field at an above average or better level with a bit of practice. How long does the practice last?
  14. QUOTE (JorgeFabregas @ Nov 7, 2009 -> 04:35 PM) This is a lot of handwringing over nothing. Teams often move their best prospects/athletes around to fill needs and get their bat in the lineup (Pujols, Miggy Cabrera, etc). The White Sox are making a savvy move because it's easier to get an average to above-average bat to fill in at 3B than it is at 2B. I expect Beckham to be a better defensive second baseman than Getz was and I expect him to take the transition in stride. He's not some fragile hot-house flower. tell me who and/or how many. And I am talking everyday starters here. GB is expected to change posiiton 3 times in two years? I hope this isn't the impact move that management seems to think will put us over the top cause I am not buying it.
  15. Teahen To The White Soxby Dave Cameron - November 5, 2009 - Share this Article Dayton Moore has made a lot of bad trades and been roundly criticized for a lot of his decisions as the Kansas City GM. Today, though, we stand and applaud, because he reportedly kicked off the off-season with a fantastic deal for his club, sending 3B/OF Mark Teahen to the White Sox for 2B Chris Getz and DH Josh Fields. Let’s start with Teahen. He’s been rumored to be trade bait for a couple of years now, as he had been displaced by Alex Gordon at third base and split time between the infield and the outfield looking for a permanent home. A large part of the reason he hasn’t been able to land at any single spot on the diamond is because he just isn’t very good. Teahen is 28-years-old and has accumulated 2,732 plate appearances in the big leagues. He has a career .269/.331/.419 line that works out to a .327 wOBA, which makes him a slightly below average hitter. He’s just average across the board. He makes some contact, he walks a little bit, he has some gap power, and he runs okay, but he’s not good at any one particular offensive skill. A league average bat has value if he can help a team out defensively, but Teahen isn’t a great defender. His UZR at third base is downright terrible, which is why it should be no surprise that the White Sox apparently plan on using him as an outfielder. He’s okay in a corner, but he’s nothing special, and the combination of an average bat and average defense in a corner outfield spot makes for a below average player overall. That’s basically what we see with Teahen. He’s accumulated +5.0 WAR over his career, working out to just over +1 win per full season. He’s a useful major league player, but not one that should be starting regularly on a club that wants to win. When you factor in that he’s a second year arbitration eligible player, likely due for a 2010 salary of around $5 million or so, Teahen is basically a zero value asset. His cost is about the same as his contribution. That Kenny Williams gave up Getz and Fields for the right to pay Teahen about what he’s worth is kind of crazy. Both of the two players going to KC have flaws – Getz lacks power and Fields can’t play defense – but they’re cheap and have a little upside beyond what they’ve shown in the majors. Fields has serious home run power and could add some value as a slugging 1B/DH type for the league minimum. Getz makes a bunch of contact and can play second base adequately. Both are role players or fringe starters, but they make the league minimum and offer some useful skills. The two players Moore got back from KC aren’t franchise changers – they’re just useful parts to have around in spring training when putting a roster together. Teahen is just not someone that should be making significant money, and given his arbitration status, he’s basically a non-value asset. The White Sox could have acquired a similar or better player by just spending the $5 million they’ll give him in free agency without sacrificing any talent. This is the right move for the Royals, clearing payroll and bringing in some younger talent that could help the team in the future. For the White Sox, this is yet another sign of the questionable talent evaluation methods used by Kenny Williams. There was no reason to give up anything of value for Teahen. All he’s done with this move is give himself a right fielder who shouldn’t play everyday and open up a bigger hole at second base.
  16. QUOTE (chw42 @ Nov 6, 2009 -> 01:15 AM) The problem with Davis is that he just swings at everything. Flowers may strike out a lot, but he's also selective. Yeah! He is selective at what he swings at and misses. My guess is AAA, but nothing higher than back up to AJ in 2010. Being a back up and also being a developing prospect doesn't make sense so I am guessing AAA
  17. QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Nov 5, 2009 -> 09:34 PM) Yep. In this instance though I was really hoping the Sox realized that the vets were in the wrong and that this team needed more guys like Getz. Ozzie certainly liked Getz and I definitely did too. He was the type of guy you need. And by no means am I saying Getz is a star, just that I liked his intangibles and the tools and thought he had the ability to be a .300 hitter with a .360 or so OBP, solid D, and 30+ steals and some good base-running. This is the point I would stress also. We have players from our own system-in this case Getz-who come up and suceed and we turn around and trade them off without really gaining anything major. In fact we give KC two players for one and comparing Getz alone to Teahan is in my opinion pretty much straight up other than Getz is a rookie with the chance to continue to improve. This makes no sense to me. Is Chris Getz one of those players KW called out as a quitter at the end of the season? He didn't seem to be one to me.
  18. QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Nov 5, 2009 -> 08:10 PM) I still think something is up. I just can't put 2 and 2 together which makes me think either no trade, or there are other pieces to this puzzle and all of the info on this trade is not yet out. Something is strange about this whole thing for sure
  19. QUOTE (whitesox901 @ Nov 5, 2009 -> 08:08 PM) Fields, good riddance. Getz wasn't all that great either IMO. Wheres he going to play? in KC apparently
  20. I think it is either the Tribune or the Sun-Times saying the Sox confirmed this trade. Then they go on to say they think Beckham moves to 2B as Ozzie supposedly said he things GB can be a 2Bman? Apparently the team is never satisfied with what they put in place. Speculations runs rampant that Figgins will be signed to play 3B. Oh well.
  21. QUOTE (Kalapse @ Nov 5, 2009 -> 06:22 PM) That would be the M.O. of this current regime: completely ignoring defense. I agree. Defense wins games. The trade makes little sense. Offensively Teahan may give a bit more, but he has more ML time. Getz is a pretty good defender and wa swinging a good bat plus has speed. Open up one hole to fill another.
  22. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Nov 5, 2009 -> 04:15 PM) Interesting. I am not surprised to see Fields out the door so quickly, but I am shocked to see Getz gone. Teahen is a nice add for us. Not sure who it makes less sense for the Sox or the Royals. If true there will be more movement I am guessing. The Sox seemed to be pretty high on Getz
  23. QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Nov 5, 2009 -> 05:29 PM) Already a thread on this. Missed it sorry
  24. CHICAGO – The Chicago White Sox have agreed to terms on a one–year, $1.5–million contract with free agent infielder/outfielder Mark Kotsay. Kotsay, 33, combined to hit .278 (52–187) with four home runs and 23 RBI in 67 games with Boston and the White Sox in 2009. He was acquired from the Red Sox on July 28 in exchange for outfielder Brian Anderson and went 33–113 (.292) with three home runs and 18 RBI in 40 games with Chicago. The 6–foot–0, 210-pounder is a .281 (1,576–5,606) hitter with 313 doubles, 113 home runs and 632 RBI over 13 major-league seasons with Florida (1997–2000), San Diego (2001–03), Oakland (2004–07), Atlanta (2008), Boston (2008–09) and the White Sox (2009). Since the start of the 1998 season, Kotsay ranks third among all major–league outfielders with 114 assists, trailing only Bobby Abreu (121) and Vladimir Guerrero (115). Kotsay, who has appeared in 17 career postseason games, owns a .342 (26-76) lifetime average as a pinch–hitter, the fourth–highest mark among active players with at least 50 at-bats. print this page | e-mail this page
