QUOTE (Melissa1334 @ Nov 24, 2009 -> 11:03 PM) funny how so many people want pods resigned. he most likely going to regress offensively and his defense and base running is awful. id definatley take a chance on crisp. i think its a great possibility since we need a leadoff hitter and kenny always gets his guy But, then we are assuming someone else is going to improve? It's all the roll of the dice in many cases

QUOTE (bear_brian @ Nov 24, 2009 -> 09:03 PM) I rarely post here, but after reading some of the anti-Crisp comments here, feel I need to add my thoughts to this discussion. Crisp is an outstanding defensive outfielder - head and shoulders above Posednik. He is also a switch hitter, which can be a valuable commodity with all of Ozzie's lineup changes. Before he was hurt last year he had an OBP of .371 in April. He is not Ricky Henderson, but he is an experienced lead-off hitter who will probably hit somewhere between .250 to .270, steal 25 bases, hit a few home runs, lay down a few good bunts, and allow us wonderful outfield defense as well as flexibility. I see no downside with him - assuming the shoulders are healed. I cannot believe all of the bashing - BJ Upton is a real long-shot, Podsednik is not worth the money he is asking, etc. There are very few solutions out there to the combo of lead-off hitter and good defensive outfielder with speed. We do not want Beckham as a leadoff hitter - that is a waste of his talents. All we need after Crisp is to sign Matsui as DH and look for one more relief pitcher. We would then be the team to beat in the central. Certainly a lot of things might happen. Matsui is not a bad option at DH, but we might also see the return of Jim Thome. I really think Matsui stays with the Yankees or at least in the Eastern Division. I still like Pods a lot and am grateful for what he did for the Sox. Whether his asking price is too high is certainly a concern. But, the economy will dictate where he goes. Maybe back to the Sox and maybe not. I am not so anti Coco Crisp as I am just concerned about injury rehab cases and judging on past comments about folks and their injuries like we saw with Joe Crede I can't understand how that can be ignored now. A quality relief pitcher would be a plus though.

QUOTE (Kalapse @ Nov 24, 2009 -> 08:57 PM) That's actually how you DO make sound financial baseball decisions. There's a good chance Crisp bounces back next season and puts up ok numbers with good defense at a very low price. Podsednik will likely put up similar numbers, is 4 years older, plays poor defense and will be more expensive and require a longer commitment. When you're banging up against your budgetary ceiling and have more than a few large holes to fill, you make gambles like this one rather than pay overpay for the older player who probably isn't any more of a sure thing. Supposition entirely. Pods did comeback and did very well for the Sox, but I am supposed to ignore that and count on Crisp coming back from injury?
-
QUOTE (Kalapse @ Nov 24, 2009 -> 08:51 PM) That's because FLD% is worthless, it only takes into account errors, and unless you have a big, wild arm or just flatout drop flyballs you're not going to commit errors in the outfield. Crisp's career Outfield UZR/150 is 10.9, Podsednik's -1.8. Crisp in CF: 5.8, Podsednik: -5.6. So over 150 games Crisp will save you 11 runs and Podsednik will cost you 2, there's a big difference in the numbers and they both have bad arms. I am not sure any stats that are used in these comparisons are all that valid. I find it interesting thought that you are willing to dismiss one set of fielding stats and accept another.
-
QUOTE (Thad Bosley @ Nov 24, 2009 -> 08:48 PM) Bounceback to what, though? Another year of a .340 OBP and 25 stolen bases? That's his usual level of production offensively, and certainly nothing to get too excited about. Fitting a profile is not the way to make sound financial baseball decisions. It's just too risky and I agree with Thad's post

QUOTE (Kalapse @ Nov 24, 2009 -> 08:35 PM) What reports and since when does Podsednik have a good arm? Here's a report: 4.4/5.0 in reaction/instincts and 4.1 in hands. If you're going to talk about speed not being everything then you should apply it to Podsednik who gets by in the field strictly based on his speed alone. I am talking about Crisp and reports of a weak arm. I checked on their stats and don't see that much of a difference in fielding pct. Granted Pods arm is not that strong either. But side by side I don't see Crisp as an upgrade over Pods. Interpret the numbers anyway you want I guess.

QUOTE (Kalapse @ Nov 24, 2009 -> 09:30 PM) 1.) Crisp is 30 years old, that's not over the hill. 2.) Do you honestly expect Crisp to hit .228 next year? If not then there's no reason to bring it up. I thought you liked to argue? There are no guarantees with a fellow coming back of major shoulder problems other than he is cheap to sign
-
QUOTE (Kalapse @ Nov 24, 2009 -> 09:32 PM) Based on what? Arm strength and other reports on his fielding. Fast isn't everything in the field
-
QUOTE (greg775 @ Nov 24, 2009 -> 09:10 PM) Crisp had surgery on both shoulders that ended his season. If one of our players had surgery on both shoulders we'd be wanting him dumped and fast. I could see us adding him, though. He'd be another huge question mark on a team with a lot of them. And we did by dropping Wise and not resigning Crede. Now we are interested in a rehab from another team? Let's get excited about a guy who hit well versus the Sox? I am trying to see the win in that scenario

QUOTE (Princess Dye @ Nov 24, 2009 -> 09:28 PM) Pods in the field was brutal enough for me. Coco can at least do something out there. But if they dont want to get someone great at leading off, I would heavily consider Gordon there. Pods is a better hitter and still has the speed. I am not so certain Crisp is that much better in the field
-
QUOTE (bschmaranz @ Nov 24, 2009 -> 09:22 PM) Yeah, I'd say it's miles ahead of the Owens/Wise crap factory. You know though I would rather see Wise back then Crisp if it's a back up role to fill
-
QUOTE (Chet Kincaid @ Nov 24, 2009 -> 09:02 PM) I'd rather have Pods Me too. Pods was healthy and performed yet we had people degrading his abilities becasue he had been hurt in the past. Now we have this rumor about being interested in Crisp, who was injured last year and hit .228 for crying out loud. We also are back to this how we have liked someone for years and now we can sign him. Yes because he is over the hill and cheap. We can do better IMO.

QUOTE (JPN366 @ Nov 23, 2009 -> 02:47 PM) If Tampa extends Crawford, it may make Jennings more available. I was going to bring up Crawford because if you read the whole story on Upton it says that certain teams have inquired about Crawford and others (including the Chisox) have inquired about Upton. I don't see TB trading both does anyone else? Plus obviously inquiries can mean about anything. Both are good players no doubt, but what would it cost to get either one?

QUOTE (iamshack @ Nov 22, 2009 -> 09:19 PM) Yeah, he has been struggling massively....I think he has a lot more talent than Young though....his grasp of the strike zone makes him incredibly more value... He struggles but has a grasp for the strike zone? Then he just can't hit the ball is what you are saying?
-
QUOTE (Chet Kincaid @ Nov 24, 2009 -> 05:42 PM) The question is when will he officially retire? Does he plan on trying to make some sort of comeback? I think we should sign the Big Hurt for 2010

When does ST and the regular season start? Not soon enough in my opinion.

QUOTE (Markbilliards @ Nov 23, 2009 -> 05:28 PM) Absolutely not. The hall is not for good players, its not for great players, its for exceptional, rare, elite players. I don't think Harold will make it, but he was and is a special player

Jenks not happy with Guillen commenting about his weight

Jenks needs to work harder to get himself in shape period -
QUOTE (Al Lopez's Ghost @ Nov 22, 2009 -> 07:12 PM) Does anyone know when the Sox made their own pop? My foggy memory says they did it during prohibition. Can anyone confirm this? I am trying to do some research but negative at this time

I sure have no problem with a 43 year old gold glove who can still hit for more of an average that Lillibridge. My guess is Brent is back at AAA in 2010

Teahen not set at 3B? Sox keeping options open

QUOTE (iamshack @ Nov 22, 2009 -> 05:20 PM) I really think you guys are going to be pleasantly surprised with Teahan's defense at 3rd...once he gets settled in there, anyways. The Sox made the trade and said he was going to play 3B. If they have a plan then stick to it IMO -
It's another one of those "we have had our eye on him years." Anyway he is still good with the glove

Everybody is a possibility right? But, Konerko for another pitcher? What happened to the big rumor about SD and the LAA?
