  1. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Dec 19, 2012 -> 12:56 PM) So who needs a 1b and can give up pitching? We have pitching to give up, but DH/1b is full. Dunn LF 2013
  2. QUOTE (Reddy @ Dec 19, 2012 -> 02:26 PM) in this situation he has ALL the leverage in the world. there's pretty much no way for him to lose/look bad UNLESS he caves for no reason. What are you talking about? The Republicans have the house. They have a ton of leverage. For many of them, their reelection is not threatened by the way this negotiation goes. People THINK the President solves all these issues but it takes two to tango. I live amongst Republicans and they all still think Obama was at fault for the debt ceiling negotiations over a year ago. This negotiation is one guy vs a bunch of faceless representatives. The face of the debate is Obama so the pressure is more on him than anyone else. If things go wrong, he will be accountable. Not John Boehner. At this stage, he may have to wait Boehner out.
  3. QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Dec 19, 2012 -> 10:18 AM) One of the biggest factors in Bourn's large WAR last year was his fielding which, while I don't doubt was incredible, is also less predictable from year to year and loses a bit of its advantage in a smaller park like USCF. He's a great player, he's just not worth it for the Sox. He's only had an OPS+ of above 100 once. None of his offensive numbers, save stolen bases, are impressive. You put a ton of stock in advanced defensive metrics and his base stealing ability to find any value in him. He can shove that $15M up his ass.
  4. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Dec 19, 2012 -> 08:08 AM) Not right now they don't. It would be counter-productive and could throw us back into a recession, making the deficit worse than it is now. This is exactly what's been happening in Britain. Then you can't go over the cliff! Across the board tax increases = recession Sequestration cuts = recession There are several programs that will be affected on January 1st, not to mention the likely huge market drop if we go over just to raise our leverage. I'd rather a status quo deal in which nothing changes than go over the cliff. They're playing with fire here and we will be the ones who get burned.
  5. Seems like this deserves its own thread. The President and Speaker can work together on this, so I say we don't need to leave this discussion the D and R threads. I'm optimistic, currently. Both sides moving closer together. Boehner has agreed to some rate increases. Obama has agreed to several spending cuts. I'm afraid they may find their parties are not as unified as they think, though. I do find the SS cuts to be particularly irritating, since it is self sufficient and running at surplus. Thoughts? Some say this is overplayed but I see negative consequences in wasting time on this. Also, some cooperation sets a nice precedent.
  6. Greg, this is for you. Might give you a better perspective on the complaints of the Huckabees and O'Reilly's of the world from a very non-secular point of view. http://rachelheldevans.com/blog/god-kept-out
  7. QUOTE (ptatc @ Dec 18, 2012 -> 09:05 PM) I think alot of it is just how much control should the government have. I know it's not on the same scale but a good example is the seat belt. When the government mandated them, I remember the commercials the government put out saying "it's for the good and safety for everyone, we will never fine people for not wearing them, it's just too make everyone safer." Fast forward 30 years and there are fines for not wearing them. It's a classic debate, particularly if you apply the "harm" test to governance. If something doesn't harm others, then you should be able to do it -- right? Except...it seems like not buckling your seatbelt only affects you. The potential harm is your own. On the other hand, what about those you leave behind? Your death in that car crash (preventable by wearing a seatbelt) could potentially ruin/harm the lives of the other driver involved, your mom, dad, brother, sister, wife, children, grandmother, etc. This is not just emotionally, but in many cases financially and otherwise. The other driver is likely to have worse insurance payouts or criminal charges if you die, if you want to make it technical. Those people would probably have wished the government had mandated that seatbelt be buckled with the threat of $50 coming out of your pocket. On the other hand, we all have to deal with SOME bad s*** in our lives and the government cannot prevent all of those things or the price paid to prevent every bad thing would be a lack of good things (freedom?). This is also especially relevant when it comes to helmets on motorcycles and drugs as well. Things that seem to concern only you often can be argued to affect others immensely.
  8. QUOTE (ptatc @ Dec 18, 2012 -> 04:16 PM) Chocolate milk is a good suggestion because it has a little of everything in it. Another good suggestion is the recovery drinks or pickle juice. For a person training for a triathalon who is going from one to the next this type of nutrition is important. Chocolate milk is the ultimate mixture of everything. Mainly yumminess
  9. Not super new references and one redundant one, but this source is a Ph.D who specializes in protein in the athlete's diet. He's also a pro natural bodybuilder, but that by no means makes you an authority. Posting from tablet so I'm not very prepared with references. The main point is that we have nothing to worry about with the amount of protein we might eat, even when we are pushing it past conservative recommendations. http://www.biolayne.com/uncategorized/myth...in-diet-safety/ I also think that worrying about nutrient timing, particularly carbs and fats, is a waste of time unless you're doing endurance training (like a marathoner, not 30 minutes on an elliptical) or otherwise totally depleting glycogen. I might speculate that CrossFit and P90x training could deplete glycogen, fwiw.
  10. QUOTE (Y2HH @ Dec 18, 2012 -> 11:37 AM) Inconclusive. http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/high-protein-diets/AN00847 While also inconclusive...let's just look at this logically. Too much of anything is ALWAYS bad for you. The fact that you can OD on water and die (has happened), should tell you that you can, in fact, intake too much protein. I'll try to find the reference or article I'm thinking of... The way I recall is that a legitimately dangerous amount of protein would be near impossible to actually fit into your GI tract QUOTE (RockRaines @ Dec 18, 2012 -> 01:02 PM) IMO, yes. Frankly, chocolate milk may work for you. ALso, I dont know about this "peeing" out protein BS I saw earlier. I s*** out spare protein, and its quite nasty.
  11. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Dec 18, 2012 -> 02:34 PM) And had the guy with the nearest gun pulled the trigger, he would have shot the wrong person (by his own statement). I'm missing the reference, this happened with the Giffords shooting?
  12. QUOTE (bmags @ Dec 18, 2012 -> 02:18 PM) My post had nothing to do with with Illinois, but I'm glad to know this hyper-sensitivity ingrained in all U of I students and the people I know were not a crazy exception. For all U of I students, just insert this into every post of mine so I don't have to deal with it: Espn IS out to get you! Only U of I students can critique U of I basketball, the rest are just speaking out of an ACC bias! Everyone is out to get us. I thought we were discussing the rankings and in particular whether Butler should be ranked higher than Illinois. I don't attend UIUC and never will.
  13. QUOTE (bmags @ Dec 18, 2012 -> 01:29 PM) this is correct. The only important part of Nov. Dec. is getting a feel for teammates, and making ridiculous dunks on inferior talent. If you don't do either of those things, your team probably sucks. Yes, like Illinois did to the inferior talent on Butler and Gonzaga....away from Champaign.
  14. I have to say I love my ASUS TF300 tablet that I bought myself on Black Friday. It's my first Android experience. I can see why people say that iOS is still better, but I really like the flexibility and customizability. With that said, there is a slight price to pay in terms of stability/smoothness, though it is not really a big factor at all. It is definitely making me reconsider whether my next phone will be from Apple. Someone needs to explain to me what exactly rooting is and why I would want to do that.
  15. QUOTE (MexSoxFan#1 @ Dec 18, 2012 -> 11:45 AM) I'd wait a little longer before including Rose name along with Kobe/MJ... I hope you realize MJ was best pals with Charles Oakley and Patrick Ewing of the "hated" Knicks, yet it didn't stop MJ from wanting to bury them everytime they played and vice versa. Magic and Larry were pals yet their teams waged wars... We just turned the NFL thread into the NBA thread. He said mentality...I, too, have an MJ-like mentality but that doens't mean I'm as good as him. Just kidding, yeah I am as good as him
  16. QUOTE (Reddy @ Dec 18, 2012 -> 11:27 AM) absolutely. oddly enough, to pack on muscle, you really don't NEED a protein macronutrient level higher than 25% (again, generally speaking). High protein macros are pretty much just used to drop body fat, since it just keeps you from eating carbs. That's pretty much the dirty secret behind that. The proportion is meaningless in terms of muscle growth. It is just the actual amount. So, yes, if you're eating 3000 cals a day, 25% if probably enough. If you eat 4000, that's probably way more than enough. Think of it in terms of total grams for muscle gain. I actually think it is generally worthless to get caught up in the ratios.
  17. QUOTE (Y2HH @ Dec 18, 2012 -> 11:21 AM) There is such as thing as too much...you can damage your kidneys with routine protein overdosing. http://www.bodyrecomposition.com/nutrition...troversies.html
  18. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Dec 18, 2012 -> 11:11 AM) Not to mention this kinda speaks to a wee bit of bias here... I quit reading at "Jeff Keppinger-Brent Morel platoon." That doesn't make any sense.
  19. QUOTE (Y2HH @ Dec 18, 2012 -> 11:03 AM) Also, keep in mind these general suggestions hardly apply to anyone at all. Depending on your body style, weight, metabolism, current muscular status, etc...your needs will change over time. For example, I re-started working out again a few months ago, I take NO protein supplements and my bicep went from 15.5" to 17.5". Just because *I* don't need to supplement protein, however, doesn't mean you don't. So try to keep that in mind when you read any sort of general guidelines. The "how much protein" question is probably the most debated in fitness. There are two things to consider: 1. There is an amount of protein that optimizes muscle growth. 2. There is also an extent to which eating protein instead of other macronutrients can result in a more favorable body composition. Depending on your natural propensity to gain fat, this may be very noticeable or not at all. When I'm going at it hard, I try to eat a gram of protein for every pound of weight. A better guideline is likely one gram for every pound lean bodyweight. The real optimal amount for muscle growth could be lower than that, but there really is no such thing as too much. It is also likely that getting to the optimal amount of point 1 is likely still below the optimal amount of point 2.
  20. QUOTE (Reddy @ Dec 18, 2012 -> 09:41 AM) 1) how old are you? 2) your body can really only process about 30g of protein at any given time, the rest just gets peed out... so the 60g protein shakes are a bit of a waste to be honest. This is not at all accurate. It is a diet myth. It is based on a study that showed muscle protein synthesis peaked in the acute setting at about 25g protein. More is still better. There are more informative studies showing that timing of meals as well as even quality of food do not result in significant physique changes. If you focus on good macronutrient ratios, you will find that little else matters.
  21. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Dec 18, 2012 -> 09:03 AM) Keenyn Walker ‏@Keenyn_Walker In a little over 12 hours I'll be taking my first swings post surgery! Soooo stoked! Been waiting for this day for what seems like forever! He's running late
  22. I had a minor procedure on my shoulder and and was forbidden to do any physical activity for 8 weeks. Couple that with narcotic painkillers and...yuck. Then I get cleared to do some things and it turns out I have some wicked dental problems (from being hit in the face by a baseball 5 years ago :|) ... so no working out and narcotic painkillers. Eat, sit, repeat My physique I worked so hard for...gonzo
  23. QUOTE (Sox1 @ Dec 17, 2012 -> 11:25 PM) I thought this thread was suppose to be about the White Sox and not grown men b****ing & moaning. The last 5 or so pages has been nothing but silly drama. Who the f*** cares!! Lol, can't disagree with this

    2012 Films Thread

QUOTE (TaylorStSox @ Dec 17, 2012 -> 08:11 AM) There's a difference between influence and plagiarism. With Tarantino, elements of his films are blatant copies. He is open about it. I think he brings out the best in his actor's performances. I just don't particularly care for his films. I'm obviously not as big a film buff as most of you, but I'd say there are still film makers that are original ie. Larry Clark, Danny Boyle, Nick Cave ( as a writer, maybe a stretch). The idea is that this kind of blatant stealing is the only honest way to do it. Everyone else blankets their stealing in subtle plot variations, etc. It's a very postmodern perspective and honestly can get tiring. Worth thinking about though. In the end, what we now perceive as originality is in fact just a new combination of stolen parts.
