QUOTE(KevHead0881 @ Feb 26, 2006 -> 04:16 PM) While I don't disagree with anything Kenny is saying, he just made this a much bigger deal than it had to be. My guess is that we'll be reading and hearing about this all week. LOL. Try the next couple of weeks. I think it's hilarious. Helps move along a slow spring training. Plus I'm right with KW. Usually he's like whatever, but he was tired of Frank talking s*** about him and the organization.
-
LOL. KW is awesome. He went nuts. Good for him!

Looks like this things only starting. Here is the caption to a picture of KW: "World Series Champion Chicago White Sox general manager Kenny Williams, left, vents his anger for Frank Thomas to manager Ozzie Guillen during spring training at the Sox training facility in Tucson, Ariz., Sunday, Feb. 26, 2006. Seething Williams fired back at former slugger Thomas, calling him "an idiot" and saying "he's selfish" after his latest comments criticizing his ex-team. (AP Photo/Charles Rex Arbogast)"

QUOTE(southsideirish71 @ Feb 22, 2006 -> 03:55 PM) What everyone is forgetting is that we may deal Contreras. if thats the case do you want Bmac inserted in the rotation going up against mainly number 1s and number 2s or something slighty down the order. I figure if the Count opens up as the number 4 it will tell more about their plans on keeping him through the season or dishing him by the trade deadline. We aren't trading JC unless someone overwhelms KW with a deal. Something I don't think is going to happen.

Cubs, White Sox, & Red Sox scouting Juan Gone

I can't imagine he'd fit in really well with the type of players we have in the clubhouse. -
i voted for 2 because in the first week I'd rather have Freddy open on the road. It really doesn't matter though, this year is totally different and he may be great at home and terrible on the road. You just never know.

.286 .404 .667 1.071 5 HR in 42 AB last year. Despite an f'ed up knee. Incredible. As long as the knee holds up he will get there. All about the health of his knee. I know your eyesight sucks as you get older (at least mine has) but I don't think it will matter. If he plays 130-140 games he'll get there.
-
Depends on his knee. If he plays 140 or so games he gets it. He is just way too good of a hitter not to. But, I'm not sure he'll play that many games. Bone on bone doesn't sound too good. Should be fun to watch though. His ABs are the most exciting (excluding IBB) in the league, other than our players of course.

QUOTE(The Critic @ Feb 19, 2006 -> 04:56 PM) Here's to an embarrassing Sammy-like 2006 season and shameful bitter combative retirement. Maybe he can have his kids hold up signs saying "Please Let My Daddy Break Aaron's Record".... :puke Don't count on it. He is an incredible hitter.

QUOTE(SSH2005 @ Feb 17, 2006 -> 01:37 PM) I didn't know that you knew that because you never mentioned it in your post. And I never inferred that Harold couldn't use a stopwatch so take it easy with the CAPS. There's probably some reason behind this that Ozzie hasn't stated yet. I hope he said he did it just for the hell of it. No reason whatsoever.
-
QUOTE(SSH2005 @ Feb 17, 2006 -> 01:30 PM) Not quite. The first base coach times a pitcher's delivery with a stop-watch to help the baserunner know when to go. I know that. I didn't realize, however, that Rock was better than Harold with the stopwatch. If I would have known that fact I would have been pissed off too. STUPID OZZIE. ROCK IS DAMN GOOD WITH THAT STOPWATCH. How will Harold ever manage over there? Jerry Manuel was a freaking first base coach for goodness sakes. I love this thread.
-
LOL. So much for Pods stealing bases. How is he going to get a good jump without Rock over there to tell him exactly what to do. Cmon guys. This is a non move. The 1st base coach has no impact what goes on at first. He can't talk to the players. All he does is flash signs and hi-five guys when they hit a HR.

QUOTE(Steve9347 @ Feb 16, 2006 -> 04:33 PM) He lost the ability to throw strikes because everytime he did the pitch got hammered. He was scared. The league caught up to him, found a "tip," and slaughtered him. 5.20 ERA = League caught up to him! Uh, no. Check out the outings where he actually threw strikes. He had no problems. He wasn't scared. Nobody was pounding him when he got the fastball on the corners and the frisbee somewhere close. He just couldn't throw strikes. Its started in spring training and didn't stop.
-
For some reason he lost his ability to throw strikes last year. Thats what I think killed him. Not necessarily that the "league caught up with him." The problem was he was getting to 3-1, 3-2 so often that they could just sit on the fastball and thats when people are going to pound on Shingo. If he just could have thrown strikes it might have been different, but he couldn't do it. Thanks for coming Shingo and best of luck in Japan!

Jose's last two starts against the Twins and Tigers. Both games we were coming off of 2 game losing streaks. The one against the Twins was the biggest game of the year I think, after losing to both to Cleveland and Minny. He stepped up really big in that game.
-
Contreras' first inning in game 1. They get a blooper for a double, but he gets out Ortiz and Manny in big spots, and I think that set the tone, and we all know what happened next. Really JC in every game 1. Setting the tone was huge. Lots of pressure for a guy that most people wanted to get rid of at the break.

QUOTE(fathom @ Feb 4, 2006 -> 10:31 AM) Trust me, I don't want the Sox to have the philosophy that if a player's not going to re-sign, then they need to get rid of them. I'd much rather they just go for it all this season again, and if Contreras leaves after this year, then McCarthy's ready to start next season. Exactly. And we'll have a good rotation, a good lineup and money to get spend on the bullpen. We just don't NEED Abreu. We don't need to make a trade for the sake of it. Plus a trade like that is turning us back closer to a 2001-2004 team to me. Something we don't need to do. Having an excess of pitching will give us an INCREDIBLE advantage this year, because SOMEBODY is going to go on the DL at somepoint this season, and if we didn't get something great back for Contreras, we could really be screwed in the rotation and bullpen if we traded JC.
-
QUOTE(fathom @ Feb 4, 2006 -> 10:18 AM) If Contreras has a good, not even great season, there's no chance the Sox are going to be able to bring him back. When you also consider that we don't get any draft picks if he leaves, then that adds to the possibility that Contreras might get dealt in the next month. And I also think I'm going to puke the next time someone suggests we'll trade him at the deadline. The only way that happens is if the Sox are 20 games out of the standings (even then, I don't think KW/Ozzie would give up). I don't think we'll trade him in at the deadline (unless we are WAY (15+ games) out of it from injuries or general suckiness or whatever), and I dont' think we'll trade him in the next month. I also think I'll puke at something as well. I'll puke the next times somebody says that we don't get anything back if we don't trade JC now. We get a significantly increased chance to win the World Series this year, which is what it is all about. I love BMac and think he will do great in the rotation one day, and also think he is critical to the bullpen next year. If one of the big three falter, or somebody gets hurt, or Hermy can't pitch, I think BMac could dominate in the bullpen until next year. He might not be that great, but at least he's a backup plan. JC is the number 2 pitcher on our team, and taking him off significantly lessens our chance to win the WS this year, so thats what we get for having on the team this year. We'll also get exclusive negotiation rights at the end of next year, and if we can't sign him, we have 6+ mil to go get whatever we need for next year. We'll see in the next month and a half though. I have big time trust that KW will make the right decision though.

QUOTE(fathom @ Feb 4, 2006 -> 10:12 AM) KW might not need to trade Contreras, but he's made it pretty obvious that if a player isn't interested in signing an extension with the White Sox, then he's going to do his best to get value for that player before they leave via free agency. He didn't do that for Konerko. And I don't think he was any less interested than Contreras. Contreras just wants to get paid what he's worth, just like Paulie, and KW probably won't offer up to that until after the season because he already has at least 5 locked up.
-
QUOTE(fathom @ Feb 4, 2006 -> 10:05 AM) Am I the only one who thinks that the White Sox would be the team who's easily getting the best end of this deal? Personally, I don't think there's a chance in hell that Philly will make this deal. Oh no, I am sure there are others on this site that would agree with you. I sure as hell don't though. You'd be hurting our bullpen, hurting our starting staff a bunch (especially if somebody sucks (Vazquez) or gets hurt), while improving our lineup, but not nearly as much as you are hurting the entire pitching staff. Dye isn't great, but he sure as hell isn't all that bad. Led RFs in HR. I guess people want the superstar hitter though, the kind of player that didn't win anything from 01-04.

QUOTE(Gene Honda Civic @ Feb 4, 2006 -> 04:42 AM) A Timeline: http://www.southsidesox.com/story/2006/2/4/4929/61034 The whole thing could be based off me throwing everything and the kitchen sink at the wall back in December. Yes, I am sure it has been out there for awhile and I am sure that KW has talked to the PHils about an Abreu for Contreras type deal, I am also sure that KW laughed in GIllick's face when he suggested Dye and JC for Floyd and Abreu. That was a good call on a similar trade getting out there in the rumor mill eventually, btw. I have no doubt that KW has shopped JC. I also have no doubt that KW won't trade him unless he is ripping somebody off. The reason? He doesn't NEED to trade him, unless we get a really good pitcher that can make an immediate impact this year. We have five starters locked up next year no matter what, and we'll have an extra 6-8 mil to get whatever else we need next year if he doesn't come back. Plus, I know KW will do anything to get better for now first, AND the future, but I think even he would be worried about taking 2 people off of our roster who were HUGE contributors for the world series team. Now if they Phils had an awesome ptiching prospect, a "can't miss" of sorts, KW might give up JC and Dye for Abreu and that guy. As it is though, there is just too wide a gap from JC and anybody on the Phils staff that Gillick would (I think) be willing to give up). I just don't see KW giving up JC unless he robs somebody. His roster is set. Unless he can get significantly better, there is no need.

QUOTE(beck72 @ Feb 4, 2006 -> 05:04 AM) Why would KW talk to every team in baseball in the last 8-9 days if Contreras wasn't on the block? Who else would be talked about in a trade? It is pretty clear that KW talked to Philly. The who and what is unclear. But the Phils want to get rid of Abreu's contract, and do need a very good SP and a cheap replacement for Abreu. And they would probably do a Dye and Jose for Abreu and Gavin Floyd right now. The sox probably not, unless they could see Floyd pitch and be sure he could help them this yr. From the sounds of it, names were talked about. I could see this scenario: The Sox make sure all their arms are healthy in ST. They get a chance to scout a guy like Floyd and make sure he's more the pitcher like prior to 2005 and not the one with a 6+ ERA in AAA. Or they could look at another arm almost ready for the bigs. If the sox staff is healthy, and a Philly prospect looks good, a deal could then be made. I have no doubt Philly would do that deal. Especially if GIllick wnats to try and win this year. I also have no doubt that KW wouldn't.

QUOTE(SSH2005 @ Feb 4, 2006 -> 12:24 AM) Johan Santana is not a good comparison. He's the best pitcher in the A.L., he's young (26), and he's locked up for three years earning less than he's worth ($9 MM in 2006, $12 MM in 2007, and $13.12 MM in 2008). Contreras is 34 years old, coming off of a career year, is only under contract for one more season, and the Sox receive no compensation if he leaves to free agency. Once again, Santana is not a good comparison to the Contreras situation at all. And I don't recall KW saying that he wants "a really great pitcher that is ready to dominate in a rotation right now." McCarthy would replace Contreras in the rotation anyways. And no team would give up that type of pitcher for a 34 year old Contreras. I thought that KW wanted young, talented pitching that could help the White Sox now and in the future. If a team has "a really great pitcher that is ready to dominate in a rotation right now" they would just keep that guy in their own rotation instead of trading him for one year of Contreras. Sigh. 1. THe point was that anybody can be traded at any time, if the price is right. Obviously Santana would demand a Pujols plus type player(s). 2. THere is nothing out there that could make us any better for this year unless some team is stupid and wants to give up an Ace type pitcher. THats why they aren't trading Contreras. And KW has said on numerous occasions that he will always listen but won't trade Contreras away unless it is for pitching that can help us win a WS this year. KW is not looking for a bat, unless somebody is willing to give us something for nothing. If he traded Contreras it would be for good pitching and Gavin Floyd is not good pitching. Somebody that is an Ace type pitcher like the front office expects him to be this year. I imagine that KW, who admittedly is on the internet all the time, has to be getting a good laugh out of this latest stuff made up by mlbtraderumors. Haha. That might be his comedy for all we know. ANd thank goodness our roster decisions aren't made by the people on this, or any other, site. Think of what an awful mess that would be.
