  1. QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Dec 15, 2010 -> 04:37 PM) I think 180 is even too much. The most he's ever thrown in a year was 154 in 2009 between Florida Gulf Coast and the Cape Cod league. Last year he threw 136 innings, but 103 of those innings came at Florida Gulf Coast where he is on a different regiment for starting than he is professionally. Given that he only gets 4-5 days in between starts, as opposed to a full week, I think he'd be better off getting 130-150 innings if the Sox were to commit to him as a starting pitcher next year. In fact, I wouldn't be opposed to him starting from April through August and then calling him up at that point to use as a reliever for the stretch run. To use the often overused phrase, it would be like trading for a good left handed reliever without having to give anything up. Yes. Pro innings are much different than amateur innings. I wouldn't want to see anything more than 130 IP. I think it is especially important considering Sale is so underdeveloped physically.
  2. QUOTE (kjshoe04 @ Dec 14, 2010 -> 12:44 AM) Yeah, although a very good stat, people use it as an end all sometimes and it's starting to get old. It has flaws just like any other stat. Yeah it's pretty much bulls*** when comparing hitters to pitchers. It holds some relevance between like players. 100% worthless when comparing Brett Gardner to Gavin Floyd.
  3. QUOTE (3E8 @ Dec 14, 2010 -> 12:35 AM) Gardener was worth more than Floyd last season. A full win more (fangraphs or B-R.com). Are we talking WAR here? If so, Gardner was "worth" more than Hamels, Oswalt, Sabathia...I'll stop now.
  4. Who can we sign mid-season to replace Quentin when he breaks his collarbone diving for a routine flyball? You think Jermaine would want to come back?
  5. I know people will bring up this being a PR hit, but I don't think that would be an issue for KW/JR. KW's/JR's attitude seems to be more about winning than pleasing the fans. If a Buehrle trade made is better, I don't think he would hesitate to make it. Although, that is the question. Can we get enough in return to make it worthwhile?
  6. QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Dec 11, 2010 -> 11:30 PM) I don't think there's any question that Andruw Jones is a quality player, it's simply the fact that he breaks down so quickly at this point. For every 2 games he starts, he's on the shelf for 1 game, and if you try and ride him as the every day starter, it's going to take a toll on his ability to perform and you won't get anything out of him. I want Andruw Jones back if he can be signed to a reasonable deal because he really is a great player, but you can't break the bank to bring him in and you can't count on him to play for an extended period of time. Yeah, I'm definitely not saying 600 AB for him. I think in the range of 400-425 (playing 3-4 times a week) with Viciedo getting the rest (+ more AB at 1B/3B/LF) would be a perfectly productive solution in RF. I certainly wouldn't pass on a nice Quentin trade because of it. I think KW might be thinking along the same lines but with Teahen playing a more prominent role (hopefully not though).
  7. QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Dec 11, 2010 -> 10:59 PM) It's not hate. It's just recognizing the fact that in this point of his career that he's no longer an everyday option and hasn't been for three years. I guess I didn't see that fact. I thought Andruw looked pretty good last season. Much better than the couple years prior. He was in better shape, more productive, and moved a lot better. Just my opinion, however.
  8. QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Dec 11, 2010 -> 10:27 PM) Counting on Andruw Jones to be your everyday or close to everyday RF is irresponsible on so many levels. There are worse options. I don't really understand the Andruw hate. Not the best player in the world, but in his last 2 seasons, in 559 AB he's hit 36 HR, 91 RBI, 90 BB, 145 K, OPS>.800. I would be very interested in seeing someone give him a starting role or at least a majority role and see what he does. His production has pretty much mirrored (or bettered) Quentin's the last 2 seasons, with better defense. I do not love Andruw Jones, nor do I advocate given him the starting gig, but I wouldn't be too mad to see him in RF if a Quentin trade gave up some much need SP and RP depth.
  9. QUOTE (Lillian @ Dec 11, 2010 -> 02:46 PM) Well, the Phillies have said that they are looking for a right handed power hitting outfielder. Since they now have Victorino, Ibanez and Dominic Brown, as their current outfielders, whom are they planning to replace with that right handed bat. Which one do you think that they would give up for Quentin, in whom they have stated that have an interest? They can't really believe that the Sox would consider Ibanez, so it would have to be Victorino or Brown. For those of you who scoffed at the idea that the Phillies would give up their top minor league prospect, what about the possibility that they would trade Victorino instead? I would prefer Brown, as his upside is far greater, and he would save some money, which Victorino would not. Although Victorino together with a reliever would be closer to the kind of return that K.W. got for Lee. Victorino is another stolen base guy, although he has more pop than Posednik. Could K.W. be thinking to put Victorino in CF, move Rios back to RF? I wouldn't mind that move, if he replaced Pierre with Victorino as lead off, and then put Viciedo in LF, or aquired a proven run producer to play Left. Equally as unlikely as Quentin for Brown. Maybe even more, if that's possible.
  10. QUOTE (fathom @ Dec 11, 2010 -> 01:51 PM) Goodness people, do you really think the Phillies are going to give up the top prospect in baseball for Carlos Quentin? x100,000,000,000,000,000,000
  11. QUOTE (PlunketChris @ Dec 11, 2010 -> 11:25 AM) True, and I like the idea of "atleast 1 reliever" if it brings back a potential position-piece to the MLB club too. As Sox fans, we might be under-valuing Quentin because he's frustrating to watch everyday, but he's a commodity that I'm sure the organization will value properly. Under-value? I'd say over-value, personally.
  12. The original rumor doesn't say they were looking to trade Quentin for relief pitching. It says for "a package that includes at least 1 reliever." That's a very different wording.
  13. It makes sense to trade Garza because they have to open a spot up for Hellickson. Shields would be the other candidate, but trading him now would be like giving him away. Even without Garza, that rotation has the potential to be the best in the division, barring a Lee signing.
  14. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Dec 10, 2010 -> 02:23 PM) Abreu really doesn't belong anyhwere but DH. Reggie Willits put up a .643 OPS last year, he's basically a backup. For a good portion of last year, including when they were playing the Sox, they had both Hideki Matsui and Bobby Abreu playing corner OF spots because they had no other option. They have Trout about ready too, who by all indications can be better than Crawford. Scioscia loves Trout so much that he was think about calling him up last season all the way from A ball. A Trout-Bourjos-Hunter OF should be very good, at the very least it will be elite defensively. Though a Crawford-Trout-Hunter OF would have been absurdly good.
  15. QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Dec 9, 2010 -> 03:03 AM) quite frankly, I don't know how good their lineup will end up being, and I don't think it will be as good as last year's lineup. That's a good question indeed. Though I wouldn't rule out it being better than last season. Morneau missed 81 games, and Mauer, Kubel, Span, and Cuddyer all had .100+ drops in OPS. Should be interesting to see how they perform after a year in the new stadium. Could be scary good.
  16. QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Dec 9, 2010 -> 11:59 AM) I assume you are talking about offensive ceiling, but even than I think this is a pretty ridiculous statement. Guerrero had a lot of power in his career and always hit for a very high average. On top of it, at one point in time, he was an above average defensive player. Yeah, that was a ridiculous statement.
  17. Brandon Lyon actually has value. Teahen would be given away if possible.
  18. QUOTE (Princess Dye @ Dec 8, 2010 -> 12:06 PM) Every year there are tons of young kids buying new jerseys. Paulie is the team's leader, one of the most likely jerseys for these new consumers to be into. Lee would be coming in as an unknown. Lets also remember this -- even though I'm not one of them, there are those people out there who will run out to buy the new Sox road grey simply because the sleeve change on the old one is now unauthentic. Yeah, people never buy jerseys for new high end players for their favorite teams. Instead, they buy more jerseys of the players they already have jerseys of...
  19. QUOTE (bigruss22 @ Dec 8, 2010 -> 11:44 AM) Jersey sales are part of league revenue sharing, so really no change. Attendance depends on if this team wins, pretty simple. Even if jersey sales were a significant source of revenue, I'd argue that by signing Lee the Sox would have seen MORE jerseys sold. If you don't have a Konerko jersey after 12 years with the Sox, you aren't getting one. Who has ever bought Sox tickets just to go see Paul Konerko play? That's kind of funny to say.
  20. QUOTE (Brian @ Dec 8, 2010 -> 08:00 AM) Yeah, those guys namaed Carpenter, Wainwright, Garcia, Gallardo, Cueto, Volquez, Arroyo, Leake, Chapman, Meyers, and Rodriguez are all terrible. + Marcum + Happ....The NL Central is actually stacked with good SP outside of the awesome Pirates rotation.
  21. The lack of rumors regarding DLee is a little unusual. He's been the forgotten man in all the 1B rumblings. I wonder if he wants to stay in Chicago and is waiting on KW to make a decision.
  22. QUOTE (fathom @ Dec 6, 2010 -> 05:32 PM) The thing is, as much as we think that, it appears KW, Ozzie, and Cooper want him in the bullpen next year no matter what. I think that's more because they think that they can still develop him as a SP for 2012 by doing that. I think that it will be a rough process going that way. They aren't oblivious to the fact that he's the only in-house SP candidate for 2012.
  23. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Dec 6, 2010 -> 05:26 PM) This is a guy who has never pitched. We talk about building innings up for a guy like Sale, but remember Santos is literally starting from scratch as of spring 2009. He will be fine. Which is why there is some cause for worry. Santos is a work in progress and Sale's never been through the grind. As talented as they both are, they are huge question marks over an entire 162 game season. I'm not worried about the pen, but that's more because I know KW will go get a couple guys more than I think Sale and Santos will be good for 162 games.
  24. It'd be nice to have a bullpen so you can develop Sale as a SP. Because we are going to need that in 2012.
