Yasiel Puig Trade Rumors
QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jul 14, 2016 -> 08:22 AM) If it's that simple, why does ESPN, who is supposed to be the foremost authority on sports news and information...choose not to use it? Why would they deliberately want to be wrong if it's in their best interest to use the best statistics? It wouldn't cost them more money to use a different version of WAR, would it? With the knowledgeable baseball guys over there like Law, Callis, Stark, Schoenfield...what's the reason? Has anyone ever asked that question? And because simply having a higher WAR in a limited number of at-bats doesn't automatically mean it could be extrapolated out over a full season for a bench player. If that was the case, the Reds would take Saladino for Bruce, the Dodgers Saladino for Puig? And yet we know both of those trades are pretty much unrealistic...right? Or even for Beltran to rent him for 2-3 months, or Josh Reddick. There are MANY players who wouldn't stand up over the test of full-time play, but their abilities can be maximized as part-time or bench players. Regardless of what version of WAR you use, it's just ONE snapshot...one of hundreds of statistics you could look at, when assessing a position player. One thing that's clear statistically is that Puig's defense has improved pretty dramatically compared to years past. But hey...if the White Sox want to go down with the Avi Garcia Ship, more power to them. I'd hate to see how he grades out about right now. Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha

I didn't see a single game that rutherford/lewis played, I just liked the idea of either. But collins is nice too.

Yasiel Puig Trade Rumors
QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Jul 13, 2016 -> 06:33 PM) I am sure they appreciate it, but why do you think the mods know more than everyone else? I bet even a couple of them don't even have a high school varsity letter. I think I got some lamp one.

Yeah, I'm happy with Collins, but I was really tied to Lewis/Rutherford.

Yasiel Puig Trade Rumors
I think I underestimated the clubhouse stuff. It really bothered me his first year the stories on him about how he didn't "appreciate" mlb history or those that came before...well no crap guy just got off boat from authoritarian country where he probably had little clue what was going on in MLB. But it hasn't just been one guy who disliked him, it's been a lot of stories. I was blown away by Puig's rookie year and would have given up anything to watch that, but now I just feel like it would be worst case scenario here. Always seems to.

I honestly have zero clue what his market is.

Wow not even typing? That was mandatory for me in middle school.

Sports Media discussion
The Ringer articles are so crazy short compared to Grantland. They end at the point where most grantland articles ...kinda began I guess. Honestly kinda bored by it. Hoping Shea pumps some life into it.

Parents Stuck With Their Kids
QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Jul 13, 2016 -> 12:04 PM) eh, from what my wife's seen teaching middle school for a little while now, these kids know how to "use" computers to go on facebook or play games or whatever, but they're not exactly tech-savvy. They can barely use word processors or even google, have a hard time negotiating basic computer functions, etc. It's not like in the 90's where you might have to spend a day or two messing around with buried config settings, physical hardware dip switches or jumpers etc. to get your favorite game to work right. Not saying your opinion isn't a reality but my niece/nephews school teaches python in elementary school. Was not an option. We didn't get cool stuff like that until Junior year of high school.

Don't even know where to put this but the glory days of mizzou sports are certainly over. Their AD just left to go to Baylor, the school cleaning up a horrible rape / rape reporting suppression scandal.

I kind of like Dinwiddie. He has been way more impressive than Grant. It's nice having a dleague franchise now to possibly use, though with waivers it's not guaranteed we could store dinwiddie down there.

Todd Frazier Trade Rumor
QUOTE (FT35 @ Jul 13, 2016 -> 10:00 AM) See I'm with you on this one. I don't see why everyone is calling for him to be a regular. He's obviously highly regarded by the people in this forum, but he's a career .261 hitter in the minors (over a large sample 541 games)... .233 in his major league at bats. He's shown some improvement this year, but I still think he maxes out at .250 12-14 HRs, 50 RBI and about that many runs scored. He's basically the infield version of Avi Garcia with those numbers, but everyone loves him because he doesn't play everyday and the speculation is that he would be great if he did. Great bat off the bench though with his position versatility. Unlike Avi - he can play great defense. Also unlike Avi, he's a great baserunner. I don't want Saladino to be our DH of forever, but he's better than Avi now.

Let's do player a/player b (stole from SSS): Player A: .242/.307/.477, 11 2B, 19 HR, 29 BB, 78 K, 109 OPS+ Player B: .213/.305/.476, 9 2B, 25 HR, 40 BB, 85 K, 110 OPS+

The Frazier trade was a fair trade, I just don't like the timing we did it. We all like this draft class, well how soon will we be clamoring to use them to get a relief upgrade, or CF upgrade that may only help us for that year? And what if that only improves us a bit? There's costs to accelerating this build and the thing that annoys me is we could have just used money to do it but instead are trading away cheap depth instead of spending money and then will always be 1 injury away from major ML issues.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jul 12, 2016 -> 04:50 PM) As opposed to having no starting players at all but still the original minor leaguers? ? Not sure what you mean by no starting players at all and minor leaguers. Semien was a starter for nearly a year. Trayce was up for 3 months. Phegley a year. Bassitt for a bit. We traded young MLB talent for 1 / 2 yr players.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jul 12, 2016 -> 04:13 PM) I would argue that turning players that weren't going to make it into a starting player would be "getting results". For 1 year? 2 years? When we are marginally competing? We're at a laundrymat paying 10 paper dollars for 16 quarters.

QUOTE (Quinarvy @ Jul 12, 2016 -> 03:30 PM) Out of curiosity, I wonder how many here would agree with that back then. What would it matter? At some point the talent evaluators of the white sox will need to get some results.

PENN STATE SCANDAL
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jul 12, 2016 -> 03:28 PM) Its almost as if one particular person was the most powerful person in that program in that city and that person was the one making sure no one did anything. Even so, when it was just a janitor, a kid here. They won't go elsewhere. The scale is so large, people talk. Was this an open secret? Were they just that well manipulated? It is mindnumbing.

QUOTE (Quinarvy @ Jul 12, 2016 -> 03:24 PM) Everyone seems to forget part of it was Micah was supposed to anchor 2B. Yeah, that was terrible talent evaluation.

2016 Democratic Thread
QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Jul 12, 2016 -> 03:24 PM) If you take an objective look I am not really sure that you can defend this. The problem is that when a political party aligns itself with religious ideology you do not leave much room for compromise. This is especially true for anyone who does not identify with the religious ideology that the party aligns itself with. I'm not sure you are right here. There are pro choice repubs/oppo dems, anti gun control dems (hey Sanders), etc. There will probably be pro gay marriage repubs if there aren't alreeady. The one real ideology of the republican party prior to trump was extreme tax cuts on wealthy.
