QUOTE (chw42 @ Nov 13, 2014 -> 08:31 PM) Even with peak Duncan, I never thought he should definitely be the guy to take the last shot on that team. But then again, the Spurs are a really bad example of hero ball, which is kind of what I'm talking about right now. Spurs used to be a really slow-paced team in his heyday

QUOTE (chw42 @ Nov 13, 2014 -> 06:48 PM) I still think, that at the end of the day, the ability to close out a game and put your team on your shoulder offensively matters almost more than anything in the NBA. I'm not sure if AD will ever have the closing ability of LeBron or Durant. Where did you view peak Duncan.

Victor Martinez Re-signs with Tigers
QUOTE (Jake @ Nov 12, 2014 -> 11:20 PM) Yeah, I'll go ahead and celebrate even less salary flexibility for the Tigs I feel like this board has been saying this for 4 years as our team has imploded and theirs has won division 4 straight.

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Nov 12, 2014 -> 07:28 PM) I personally think what he said and what he meant are 2 different things. I am not going to play tonight because I might be sore in 20 years if I do, but I should be able to play tomorrow night with no 20 year reprecutions makes no sense. The best shot he has of not "being sore" in meetings and graduations in the future is to not play at all. He is just relaying what he has been told improperly, and not everyone wants to believe outside of basketball , there is a reason someone took an SAT for him. The reality is, and it's 100% true, Rose is horribly inarticulate. He often says stuff that sounds ridiculous only to completely contradict it the next day. His behavior has always indicated that when he walks his statements back, those are what he really meant. So getting self-righteous about how athletes are holding organizations hostage is absurd.

QUOTE (JUSTgottaBELIEVE @ Nov 12, 2014 -> 07:02 PM) this isn't about sprained ankles. and yes, I agree the Bulls handled that situation very poorly but that's not the discussion at hand here. we are talking about a player deciding when he should and shouldn't play because he's worried about life after basketball. if you don't see that as a problem, then I don't know what else to say Okay, cool. Whenever this actually happens where Rose sits out a game 7 because he doesn't want to be sore later on, I will be the first to say congrats. But that will never happen. Rose is not Andrew Bynum or Albert Belle and he never will be. There's a reason his teammates love him. It's not because he is a selfish person.

QUOTE (JUSTgottaBELIEVE @ Nov 12, 2014 -> 06:34 PM) he's getting paid to play. when a player can dictate when he plays and doesn't play and still gets paid without repercussions, then yes that is holding the team hostage. This isn't a scenario we are even living in, getting upset about this stuff is just ridiculous. Sports fandom in 21st century is 90% psychoanalyzing bulls***. Rose sat an extra day with 2 SPRAINED ANKLES. He evne tried playing on it the day before. He isn't holding the bulls hostage. Meanwhile the Bulls almost killed a player 2 years ago. How's that for corrupted power.

2014-2015 NBA thread
QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Nov 12, 2014 -> 07:03 PM) I think the problem is what was actually said. He said he doesn't want to be sore at his son's graduation or at meetings post retirement, so he will take a game off here and there. I am speculating he is using that as an example because someone told him he has to lighten it up a bit or he may get injured again and be limited physically the rest of his life. The Rose camp is a problem. They feed Derrick things to say and after it gets filtered through his brain, something that a lot of people would be puzzled by, is said. If he is so concerned about being "sore" (his words) at his son's graduation, why doesn't he just retire now? Why risk it at all. The will he or won't he comeback a couple of years ago was also a Reggie Rose production. Apparently, the Bulls wanted to issue a press release that he was out for the season (which he ultimately was), but Reggie wanted to keep the speculation alive. It ultimately made his meal ticket look bad. I actually should be fair to Reggie. While he is a problem, it does seem he has been a really good brother. Ultimately Derrick deserves all the credit for his success, but Reggie deserves a lot of credit for keeping him in a position to do so. I think all of this is true, I also don't think any of it is a problem or something fans need to get into meathead mode about. Addressing a separate poster: And to the part about athletes having too much control. LOL. That is the most backward logic I've ever heard. Owners get upset about high salaries, owners put arbitrary cap in place, owners still want to win, owners stupidly spend too much on a player, player gets injured, player should apologize for "holding team hostage".

Of course, when the problem isn't what was actually said, but the "optics" of what was said, you know it's a real hard-hitting issue.

QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Nov 12, 2014 -> 04:40 PM) OMG! A player wants a life after playing his sport?! He's not going to kill himself for the game and the team (the team that will throw him away the moment he's not useful)?! THE HORROR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Wait wait, owners and management aren't considering player safety? There's an issue with concussions and long-term ailments that the leagues aren't paying for. THE PLAYERS ARE HUMANS NOT ROBOTS! I DEMAND ACTION! RABBLE, RABBLE, RABBLE! Jesus Christ this country can find ANYTHING to complain about. I don't think we've ever been more on the same page.

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Nov 12, 2014 -> 03:12 AM) If her husband didn't screw up South Carolina with his comments, and the Kennedy's, Kerry and Oprah didn't jump on board right around that time of "anti-Bill" backlash, history would tell a different story. Because the Clintons had an almost perfect record with African-Americans until that caucus. This is "politico history". The anti-bill backlash was why Obama was powerful in the first place. It didn't start in south carolina. People didn't want to rehash the womanizing and perpetual scandals of his eara.

I really don't care. Rose says something that sounds pissy, people cry and cry because they would do it so differently if they were in his position!, and then it turns out he meant something else but didn't say it correctly. Rose was basically acknowledging what every medical doctor fan who has commented for the past 2 years has been saying "he needs to change his game!"

QUOTE (Jake @ Nov 11, 2014 -> 06:48 PM) Also, at some point, Thibs might have to think about how he can get Rose and Brooks on the floor at the same time. You can't always do that, particularly due to their defense, but he ought to look for matchups that allow us to get Brooks out there without coming at a direct expense to Rose. Brooks' defense has been surprisingly good to me, especially so early in the season. I think it will look even better when our bigs figure out the d a little better (/ noah gets healthy). It really is remarkable how every year we get a vet min small point guard and see them flourish. It makes total sense to me why, but still impressive. I feel like for the 4th year in a row I'll be like "but Brooks was the best of all of them! We can't let him go!"
