Walmart employs 1.6 million associates in the US. The $12/hr they moved up to in 2021 is like 24k/year. If you paid 1.6 million people 26k more per year that is $41.6 billion. Their net profit was $14billion globally last year.

Eh. From the most profitable companies? I'd say this may be one of the few times that isn't true.
-
Do you think this isn't happening right now?

I think it would have been probably better for the minor leaguer if branch rickey's system didn't take off. Maybe college baseball was even more prominent as a feeder and high school less. OR you end up with a system more like soccer, Formula 1, etc, where you still draft guys and have their rights, and these differnet leagues (Premier Baseball League, National Baseball League), purchase loan contracts on these players. The expectation is the clubs will purchase them back. But for those teams, they will have payroll themselves and need to pay player salary. The best next league would likely be in places like Louisville, Charlotte, Nashville, etc. Because these teams are putting together the best talent they can and trying to win, interest is decent. They can afford a salary of a late career player. The level of baseball is pretty strong. They get some decent TV money and followings. They need to recruit the talent and teams to give them players there. Players build a decent following and carry it into the MLB. Pay if you get on these teams, and facilities, are probably much improved. OTOH, there is likely less of them. Players who don't get picked up by this are in the team complexes playing backyard games. Alternate universe.

BP became writer-owned in 2018 and has done a number of great things since to prove its value.
-
As much as I hate baseball right now please consider supporting baseball America, BP and fangraphs, who even the last few months have kept me entertained and don’t deserve this shit if the last few years.

The idea that the last 5 years have been difficult for mlb financials and that it is due to labor cost is so silly. And it points to his horrendous leadership in failing to nab the new revenue streams others have been so able to claim. And now he lets games be lost over labor disputes that frankly aren’t close to the level of disagreements in years past. Eat shit manfred.

I really don't want to hear about what good businessmen the owners are ever again.

There's no point giving a shit about the theatrics in the media. If there is meaningful progress in their last proposal it will get it closer to done.

When your pitchers include Lance Lynn...yes

Considering it was a 60-game season Jonathan Villar may have had the worst defensive season in history in 2020 He's not good. Only sample size can cover up his defense.
-
Yeah to be clear I think a conforto, etc if signed would not cost the new team a draft pick. More trying to understand if the teams that signed 'protected' free agents prior to december first did so knowing they could get a "get out of jail free card". I feel like teams that offer the QO and didn't re-sign should still get the draft comp, it just shouldn't be removed from another team.
-
I really worry about his defense there. He's a nice bench piece, but when he was placed full time at 2b in 2017 he was awful there and I think his neutral numbers since is just a factor of being played there sparsely. I don't feel like Philly is putting him at 1b and corner outfield all last year if he was really showing more range up the middle.
-
I know it's going away on the new one, but if it was signed under the old agreement does that old cba still carry over it's penalties for this draft?
-
I'd say Romy + Yolbert Sanchez should provide similar depth with higher upside. Sanchez is not Yolmer level but you may as well find out. BUt yes, there is no reason to sacrifice defense at 2b to stretch for slightly above average offense in Villar. We'll see what happens.
-
Not feeling amazing about the FA opportunities. 2b is completely lost. I am now mostly just rooting against Villar. I'd say Josh Harrison should have like 30+% odds and the favorite to go here.
-
That would be very disappointing.
-
I agree with this. He'll probably be a 4.5 era pitcher but has enough that you can imagine him getting a career year if things go right.
-
It will probably take me weeks to remember what even happened before december. It just took me 5 minutes to figure out who Lil Kimmy was referring to
-
One thing I am unclear on in these in-between years. If you signed a QO-offered free agent under the last CBA, would you still lose a draft pick under this new one (knock on wood)?
-
The thing is the effective luxury tax number is much lower when benefits are factored in. The Sox were really only one signing from it currently. So this is a big help to prevent being tapped out at deadline.
