However, I'd venture to rely more on the fact that Maldonado is very good at defense. That said, you look at the top catchers and Salvy is amazing in these, so it clearly is aligned decently and Maldonado had a lot of chances. No idea, but I think we'd be happy if we signed Maldonado. My personal preference is to go Chirinos/Perez battle for backup. I'm a big believer that we have a Major Leaguer in Carlos Perez, not a starter, but a guy we can have on our bench for a long time.

Baseball Savant has him at excellent at second base (95% percentile) last year. FRAA likes him a good bit. Fangraphs only has him slightly positive.

My other thoughts are, while I share in the assessment that this team needs to get another big, I think I believe now that they are good enough that they can wait until February when the buyouts start to happen and trade market heats up.
