Sox sign Hendriks: 3/$39M - 4th year optional with $15M buyout
lol, was just thinking about when Ryan McGuffey tweeted that he'd rather have hendriks for 3 years 50 million than 4 years 50 million (paraphrasing) and how that, in a way, is what is happening.

I think of it like we had to pay to keep it a strength.

Tommy La Stella Emoji of a Target Discussion
La Stella could not play SS. We'd be in Beckham/Leury territory assuming no Madrigal. And realistically it's Leury.

Jose Ruiz ruined like 5 games I saw in person where he came in for an inning and it would last 30 minutes and he'd give up 4 home runs. I would see these numbers that implied he had innings where he didn't implode but I'm not sure I ever saw one.

This is the value. But I do think it's ok to talk about the fact that colome was perfect last year. I just had my doubts he would be able to repeat it moving forward because he had to do a lot to get that shoulder ready and I think he is already straddling a line. I have a lot of respect for what Colome did because it doesn't get much better results wise, and the fact that I hated getting him, but moving forward Hendriks provides a more likely stable backend.

usually gets smoothed out over length of deal on lux tax.

Sox sign Hendriks: 3/$39M - 4th year optional with $15M buyout
I don't think people understand how much closers make in arbitration. For instance, next year Hendriks will make $11 million, as you said, just a 500k increase. Mark Melancon got 4 for 62 in 2017 as a soon to be 32 year old reliever. He was great prior, but this deal is certainly in line with the 20% or so haircut we are seeing on deals this offseason.

They have 10 years to pay it off, so 1.5 million/yr. Not dissimilar to their recurring Paulie cost.

Best to blow past them though and deal with it later.

I'm happy the sox found a way to hit the target of the player/agent. You can tell the leaks of the completion came from agent, as all were emphasizing the guaranteed money. Good for sox/hahn.

I do want to say that Colome was fantastic last few years. I just really worried about his shoulder. Hendriks could fail but he's been incredibly effective so he has room to fall, whereas colome if he started to decline already had a bunch of baserunners getting on.

So Colome made 10.5 million last year. Hendriks is making 11 next year.

Foodies: Sox/Giolito discussing an extension?????
Nola was injured a lot. Giolito probably won't feel the same need to hedge risk. But any pitcher with a TJS has to have some concern it blows up.

Trade Whispers - Starting Pitchers
They were my first thought as well. We don’t trade direct that often but they have been Hahns go-to to make trades workable. 3 way trades are hard and so him and Friedman must communicate well.

Here is one counter though I acknowledge this year we probably could have gone underneath it: - we are paying the bullpen about the same next year and after as we were last few years - Colome was still pretty expensive in arb at 9 and 10 million last two years. - we paid for Herrera and Cishek as MR - we’ve built out MR organically keep them out of save situations where they get really expensive in arb At least when looking at the group as a whole, it made sense to splurge on the bullpen when so much of it was cheap. And it kept the young promising guys in roles that didn’t stretch them. Now, if he really comes at the cost of X on whole roster I agree with your points - but that’s up to sox. Doesn’t have to be the case.

2020 NBA Regular Season Thread
Zach and Coby deserve credit. Unlike v pacers, hawks where they couldn’t score and gave up. Recently when Zach or Coby were off they’ve really tried to make plays for others.

I'm sure it means nothing but I feel like it going on this long makes it less likely they were fired.

honestly the inner battle with me is just severe cynicism that we will be getting a first, second, third choice and will be taking a pretty big risk.

This this this. For Bears, I really hope if they did move they had made feelers. But Smith, Khan, Dorsey, and even eliot wolf all would have my ears up.

NFL Thread 2020-2021
This is where it's hard to pick one over the other. The bears offense lacked talent. But we've also seen talent leave and perform much better on other squads. My fav example is Mike Davis, obviously, but he truly looked awful on the Bears, and he was a pretty damn good "Christian McCaffrey-lite" on the panthers. Foles looked horrendous in an offense ostensibly built for him. But then he was playing behind an offensive line that had detioriated because Pace needed to supplement other parts of the roster in worse shape. Overall, it gets down to the fact that when Pace made that trade for Trubisky, hired Nagy, and traded for Mack, it was an "all-in" move that didn't work out. Well, you busted and have to go home. But for the ownership, they have to figure out if it's possible to build some stability because they've tried 3 different coaches and GMs in the 2010s and they all didn't work out.
