  1. QUOTE(Steve9347 @ Aug 12, 2005 -> 02:25 AM) Your reasoning??? PLEASE??? They have no centerfielder and bottomless pockets, why would they not claim Junior? Even with the amount of money they have, that contract is absolutely insane and I just find it hard to believe they'd take a chance at claiming the whole thing, who knows though I could definitely be wrong.
  2. QUOTE(SHAFTR @ Aug 12, 2005 -> 02:40 AM) I'll attempt to explain... Lets say a young prospect has a k/9 of 10 and lets say that # is conistent through his career. This means that out of 27 outs in a game, he is able to get 10 on his own. This takes park effects, defense, etc out of the equation. It's really the only stat that only concentrates on batter vs pitcher. Furthemore, Bill James did a study on starting pitchers and found that pitchers who strike more guys out last longer in the league. Pitchers that strike out 6 per 9 will have longer careers than pitchers who strike out 5 per 9, and in fact, if you study it closely enough, pitchers who stike out 5.8 per 9 innings will last longer as a group than pitchers who strike out 5.7 per 9 innings. The relationship is that strong. Obviously there are exceptions to this rule, but I still think it's very valuable (especially for FA, Trades & Prospects). I understand you disagree, I'd like to know why. Very good points. For me striking guys has a difference of importance for each pitcher and what kind of pitcher they are. For instance, for a sinkerball pitcher imo it's better when they aren't striking out a lot of guys, most of the time a sinkerballer is striking out a lot of guys it means that they're over throwing and more prone to give up a lot of hits. Also there is always those soft tossers who just know how to pitch, won't strike out a lot of guys but know how to get outs. You don't have to strike a lot of guys out to be a good pitcher and I know you'll agree with that so imo it just can't be the most important stat for a pitcher. Agree to disagree.
  3. QUOTE(knightni @ Aug 12, 2005 -> 02:10 AM) Cleveland's pretty much played Kansas City. I highly doubt that it is the thread's fault that KC loses. Isn't it obvious? Youngstownindians(or whatever the hell his name was) showed some Indian players this thread, they got pissed off and now they won't lose.
  4. QUOTE(BHAMBARONS @ Aug 12, 2005 -> 02:16 AM) Great slap hitter will hit to all fields has a very good batting eye. I would like to see him get consistant playing time in Charlotte. I like Jerry he has like a pods clone. Couple of notes I think Jerry's Power numbers will rise in Charlotte he does have some power and those numbers will rise. Also a lot of people on here look at his SB stats and think he is not a base stealer but that is not the truth Jerry has been hosed on several calls and few more pickoffs but when Jerry takes off he is not caught often. As always, thanks for the info.
  5. QUOTE(Steve9347 @ Aug 12, 2005 -> 02:06 AM) honestly, the Griffey talk seems to be heating up more than cooling down. But how do we get him past the Yankees? They are desperate for an OF, and are a bunch of assholes. We obviously need some offense, and he would obviously bring it. Junior would be nice, but we have to be able to get the Yankees to f*** off for once, and they won't! Not necessarily true, if anyone is going to claim Jr. it would be the Yanks but I don't think they will.
  6. QUOTE(SHAFTR @ Aug 12, 2005 -> 12:38 AM) Pitchers: Most Important: K/9 It's not the tell all obviously but it definitely is the pitching stat that says what Pitcher can do on his own (outside of the defense). I've never disagreed with an opinion as much as I do here. EDIT: SHAFTR, please don't take this as me trying to be an ass, I respect your opinion just I completely disagree with it.
  7. QUOTE(YASNY @ Aug 12, 2005 -> 12:45 AM) All stats are useful tools in judging a player's performance, just as all stats are limited. It takes a combination of these stats and your own eyes and knowledge of the game to make a true assessment. Completely agreed here.
  8. QUOTE(DBAH0 @ Aug 12, 2005 -> 01:31 AM) He's got to keep hitting at higher levels to be considered anything more than a future 4th outfielder. Mike Spidale had a great year for B-Ham last season, and now he's back down with the Hogs in high A. Not saying that's going to happen to Owens, but Jerry's gonna need to hit well in Charlotte. Fair enough, BHAM I see you reading this thread, I'd be interested as to what your thoughts are on Jerry.
  9. QUOTE(Dam8610 @ Aug 12, 2005 -> 01:25 AM) Is this something that's baseball specific? I've never heard of resting starters to go into a playoff game (which basically means handing the opponent the game) showing that you're scared. For example, last year the Colts and Eagles had nothing to play for in their final game of the year, so they both chose to rest all of their starters for the playoffs. That's not being scared, that's being smart, because by not playing their starters, they were assured that their starters would be healthy for the following game. Both lost those games, and the Colts cost the Jaguars a playoff spot, but they did the right thing for their team. If the White Sox have nothing to play for when those games roll around, I'd rather see the starters be rested, healthy, and ready for the playoffs than playing and risking injury and fatigue in the playoffs. If that means the Sox let the Indians sneak in, so be it, but they'd be doing what's best for their team. You're exactly correct. Read down to the next post I made, I didn't read his whole post before I responded which was very dumb of me. It's completely different to rest your starters then to lay down for the opposition.
  10. Is it time to consider Owens a true prospect? I know a lot of the experts around here just aren't very high on him but all he does is hit. I know he was supposed to be pretty raw coming into this year but he sure doesn't seem so, it'll be interesting to follow his progress next year.
  11. This thread is a jinx, has cleveland lost a game since this was created?
  12. "I enjoy being in Chicago," Griffey told WMVP-AM 1000 during the Reds' visit to Chicago this week to play the Cubs. "My family comes here a lot. I do have control. The Reds and Chicago have to make a deal." From the man's mouth. Anyone ready to get their hopes up again only to see this thing not happen?
  13. QUOTE(S720 @ Aug 11, 2005 -> 05:51 PM) Thanks SoxFan1. If I'm banned, how come I can access the website at work? I really don't know what's going on? If you can remember, sorry for the little trouble with you before. Who the hell had the nerve to ban me? Are you using mozilla at home? For whatever reason some people including myself have had problems accessing the site at times with mozilla. Try IE and see if that helps.
  14. QUOTE(whitesoxfan101 @ Aug 11, 2005 -> 05:12 PM) That is an unrealistic proposition at this point unfortunately... They're 4 up for a playoff spot, it's not unrealistic at all....
  15. Now this is how I would expect the Sox to lose a game in Oakland.
  16. QUOTE(Texsox @ Aug 11, 2005 -> 04:46 PM) If I am reading some of the pro Ozzie comments correctly, you would speak to your best friend and the rest of the world the same way, and everyone should just know how the remark was intended :headshake Ozzie is the most visible face of the organization the most often quoted individual. When he is perceived by the general public as dissing gays, that's bad. He didn't say, there's a really great guy. Or there's a fine family man, he clearly was making fun of the guy by calling him gay and/or a child molester. We can expand out from there that Ozzie obviously must think gay is not a good thing because he was making fun of him. Duh, it's an insult. Kids, feel free to insult anyone and everyone you come into contact with in life. Make the world adjust to you. f*** those people that can't take a joke. You'll do just fine in the job market. Tex, you've never called a friend gay before jokingly? I know I've ton it plenty of times, he was joking with one of his friends everyone does it. He didn't do anything wrong, the media is making something out of absolutely nothing.

    Have a good one.
  18. QUOTE(Flash Tizzle @ Aug 11, 2005 -> 03:52 PM) The situation itself should ruin their credibility. 30 media persons in the dugout with Guilllen, yet only two--both, oddly enough, owned by the Chicago Tribune, decide to print his quotes. No one else finds this odd? Oh yeah, some will argue "his comments were insentive regardless of being printed or not!" Unfortunately, I don't believe Ozzie will shut his mouth or become polictically correct to appease a few whiners. Friends talk to other friends like this all the time. This has to be one of the worst articles ever written.
  19. Hooray, this story is going national now.
  20. The cardinals would be retarded to trade Boldin for T.O. that would make me very angry.
  21. QUOTE(DePloderer @ Aug 11, 2005 -> 11:42 AM) I know I'm a bit slow but what is a sig bet? Please? Basically what SF1 said. Willie(gblum27) and I have made some sig bets and I've won all 3 Goldy actually made him a really cool sig when we had a sig bet on the ncaa tourny this past season
  22. QUOTE(Milkman delivers @ Aug 11, 2005 -> 11:44 AM) Our record is better than theirs, but they sure as hell beat the s*** out of us every time we play them. We're the best team in baseball this year, and we managed to beat them twice. Playoffs are a different game. Like I said earlier in this thread we'll be hearing about how we can't beat oakland and they'll be hearing how they can't get out of the first round.

    RETRO SIG TIME

QUOTE(Goldmember @ Aug 10, 2005 -> 09:21 PM) thought i'd break out one i made for someone that never saw the light of day--for good reason: made it in june last year and, of course, koch was traded on 17th... You still have the Damaso/shingo one you made for me?? That sig absolutely rocked, I have it saved somewhere but I'm to lazy to look right now.
  24. QUOTE(LosMediasBlancas @ Aug 11, 2005 -> 11:40 AM) I get the feeling some Sox fans would rather play Oakland and lose, then to not play them and oh, I don't know, maybe win the WS. [/color] Not at all. We're a better team then Oakland, bring 'em on.
  25. QUOTE(Milkman delivers @ Aug 11, 2005 -> 11:31 AM) What exactly is the hood? I'm from the "mean streets" of Chicago, does that count? I'm from the mean streets of Buffalo Grove, it's sure tough out here.
