Official Recruiting Thread II
QUOTE(whitesoxfan101 @ Oct 11, 2007 -> 02:45 PM) The first one is for sure Simpson, that one is all but public already. The second one is kind of a mystery, but Joseph Bertrand is the name I am hearing the most, as he loved the Jerrance hire. However that is just a guess because I haven't talked to my friends in Sterling or at U of I today yet, but yeah the Simpson thing is a lock though. The other verbal could also be class of 2010 guard Anthony Johnson though. He's the #2 player in the state for 2010 behind Richmond, and his coach at Whitney Young has a very good relationship with Bruce. That is just total speculation though. I've heard Bertrand as well but we all know how accurate I've been in this thread. Boo if true.

Konerko Speculation
QUOTE(CWSGuy406 @ Oct 10, 2007 -> 05:54 PM) Who exactly wants to get rid of Kotchman? FWIW, the trio of Shields, Figgins and Kotchman out-VORP'ed Konerko and Garland by a rather large margin (77.2 to 52). Even if you don't believe in VORP, those numbers show who's getting the better end of the deal, and that doesn't even take into account the ~$50 million off the books. As far as the Angel fans who want to get rid of Kotchman, let's hope that their GM is also in that camp. The more I think about a deal like this, the more I realize this deal would be a huge victory for the Sox -- arguably better than Kenny's swipe of Bartolo Colon. Serious question, if this trade goes down do we keep Contreras? If not do we have 3 of our rotation members from the Danks, Floyd, Gio, Eggy camp? The more I think about trading Garland(and I am fine with dealing him, though I admit I've flip flopped on this issue many, many times), I think we need to get at least someone else who can step right into the rotation and be a league average starter. The fa market is just so bad sp wise that there just aren't many choices out there. My problem with this trade is it basically fills a hole and creates another at the same time, if we're trading Konerko or Garland then I think we need to fill at least 2 holes, not none. That's just me thinking out loud there, like I said before, this trade intrigues me but there needs to be more imo.

QUOTE(Heads22 @ Oct 10, 2007 -> 04:09 PM) Wait, I thought we were getting this awesome coach from the MVC who could turn around our program? Or, he's overrated. One of the two. I'd love to see him pull off a year with less than double-digit losses. You've given him a whole one year before you've decided that's he's overrated? Quick trigger there my friend.

QUOTE(Heads22 @ Oct 10, 2007 -> 01:15 PM) ISU plays UNI at home, Drake and Bradley on the road, and possibly Missouri State in Las Vegas. I'm going to be highly disappointed if we don't win those games. Need to start seeing a little improvement this year. You guys wont beat Bradley, UNI should be down this year so tha'ts winnable and Drake still isn't good, also winnable. As usual though, you like to underrate the league, so we'll see what happens.

QUOTE(ZoomSlowik @ Oct 10, 2007 -> 12:16 PM) When's the first good game anyways? Doesn't UNC play Louisville on like Nov 5th? You're not pumped for the SIU-King exhibition game on the 3rd?

QUOTE(Brian @ Oct 10, 2007 -> 08:20 AM) I love Falker, but if he was 2 or 3 inches taller, Yikes! Gonzaga! OMG!!!1! FTW! It'd be nice if he were a little taller but still, he's quick and athletic enough to hang with the bigger guys in the country. Hopefully this season he'll catch a few more passes and learn how to get around and pass out of a double team, then he'll be unstoppable. QUOTE(Heads22 @ Oct 10, 2007 -> 09:15 AM) BTW, we are soooooo going undefeated against the MVC this year. Oh heads, you never learn.

I like Jackson a lot but I don't see how his numbers even warrant heisman consideration right now.

Konerko Speculation
QUOTE(Tony82087 @ Oct 9, 2007 -> 06:45 PM) I probably saw this post 5+ times in the Lee/Pods trade... I was definitely one of them but I think this deal is a little different as we'd be trading a sp and not getting one back in return, not to mention that there aren't really any sp's in free agency. Like I said, this deal is intriguing cause I do like all 3 of these players and the money freed up would be fantastic but I think there needs to be another piece added in there.

Konerko Speculation
QUOTE(RockRaines @ Oct 9, 2007 -> 06:42 PM) Well is it fair to say we've seen Figgins ceiling? Is it really a good idea for us to give up one of our steadiest pitchers and probably our best hitter over the past several years and a good defensive 1B for a player that may have peaked, a reliever who may be in decline and a prospect that hasnt shown the power potential yet to be a great 1B. It just isnt an even deal IMO. As much as I would LIKE those players, its not worth giving up Konerko and Garland even for the financial flexibility. I never said I liked the deal. I will say that something like that intrigues me but I'd like one more piece, still I was just arguing Figgins vs. Owens, that's it.

Konerko Speculation
QUOTE(RockRaines @ Oct 9, 2007 -> 06:33 PM) Then why not use Jerry Owens who is cheaper, younger and already here? He was almost at that OBP from his callup. The big knock about him on this board was his ability to SLG and get extra base hits. Cause he's not a proven player and he still provides a lot, lot, lot, lot less extra base hits than Figgins. Sure he could develop some more power but he could regress a bit too, we dont know. With Figgins we know for the most part what we're getting and he's proven that he can be a good leadoff hitter in this league. At best, Owens next season gets on base at around the same clip as Chone with a lot less power, and that's the best case scenario imo.

Konerko Speculation
QUOTE(RockRaines @ Oct 9, 2007 -> 06:25 PM) I understand he had a good season this year. With that said, his career .350 OBP would have ALOT of people on here upset if he was our lead off man. Not to mention hes getting into that dreaded 30's range where the speed and sb's start dropping off. I mean how many people on here were using the OPS argument against Jerry Owens? Chone will have a sub .800 OPS next year most likely. His SLG has only topped .400 2 out of 6 years. Actually, I don't think a .350 obp for a guy like Figgins would dissapoint anyone.

What about this offseason?
QUOTE(Chombi and the Fungi @ Oct 9, 2007 -> 01:52 AM) So the red section appears to be accurate. None of it is. The one year contract is only for that season, it does NOT void your upcoming arbitration years.

Red Sox / Angels
QUOTE(witesoxfan @ Oct 8, 2007 -> 01:15 PM) And, part two of that, I can most definitely see them signing Bonds too. They've been the rumored destination for quite some time, it keeps Bonds in Cali, they have the room, the money, and they need the offense more than any playoff team from this year. You put Bonds on the Angels this year, and it could have been a completely different series. Arte wont go after Bonds, at least I doubt.

Seriously, is that the worst playoff team of all time? I think it'd be hard to find a team that was worse than these bozo's.
