Someone on one of these boards suggested he had been released, but that was never the case. He just wasn't listed in the Birmingham News article that announced the Barons roster. I know my assessment of Shaffer is harsh, but it is the truth. I feel sorry for him because you can almost see the lack of conifdence in his demeanor. I don't think he truly believes he belongs in AA. Catcher Jonathan Aceves was placed on the "DL" since the Barons were one player over the limit.

I may have to jump in on that....... I have a borrowed PS2 now and will invest in my own soon.

Alex, do you have the ability to play online, against others?? I am thinking of getting set up to do that, but never have tried it.

Kohlmeier is starting until they get Pacheco stretched out. He didn't throw much in big league camp and then had some soreness in ST, so he isn't ready to start yet. This per Kirk Champion on the Barons radio broadcast Sat. night.

My guess is that the odds are too long for him...... Rob is a good guy, but was one of those guys they took because he had a good arm, not because he was a good pitcher. Sometimes you win with those type guys, sometimes you don't. JimH, did you ask Duane Shaffer why his son is playing at the AA level for the 3rd consecutive year, while he should still be in Class A if at all? It might be smart to ask that a little more tactfully than I just put it, but I think you get the point.....

Keep in mind, when Wing comes back, someone will have to go down from Birmingham. Then they will have to trim the roster to 23 the first week of May and Fields will take up another spot, so Winston will be getting pitchers from above.

That's not official...... just what I heard. Anything is subject to change, so don't hang me if I am off on this one.... I don't think I am, but anything can happen.

Heard he will likely skip one start as a precaution. Nothing serious was found.

Winston............. Nanita, Lopez, Sweeney and Anderson all with a hit. Nanita scored 3 runs. Rogowskie 2-4. Kanny.......... Bounds, Lisk and The Schnur with two hits apiece. Valido still playing 2B (???)......

Reed hitting .429..... Nelson hitting .714.... not sure why the averages are getting messed up. I saw Rickie Weeks listed as hitting .955, however he is hitting nowhere near that. He is only at .750!

Wunsch messed up the Sox plans when he mentioned to a reporter that he wasn't right and that his velocity was way down. The reporter wrote it and it all but made Wunsch untradeable at that point. The Sox told him if he wasn't right, he needed to work it out in AAA, not in the bigs, taking up a roster spot. I did hear from three sources the Sox were looking to trade Wunsch, 2 of the 3 before Hawk mentioned it. They all had the same story, so I have no reason to doubt they were trying to move him.

Not a lot of "prospects" in Birmingham this year. There are a few guys who this could be a make or break year, but also more veteran free agents than I have ever seen here. This shouldn't be a surprise because Winston-Salem hasn't been strong in terms of position players in a couple of years.

Rick is from IL, Tim from NY.......... could be cousins, but I don't know......

I agree he is not an ACE right now. Could he be? Yes.... Will he be? don't know... Is he very good now? Yep I think that sums up the whole gist of the point I was trying to make. I do agree with you that he is not among the elite pitchers at this point and may never be. That doesn't preclude him from being very good.

Then kindly don't read the thread..... Or sit on your hands if the urge to type is that great. Once again, you don't get it. It has NOTHING to do with AL vs. NL. That is purely circumstantial. Never was it said that his success in the AL would mirror that of what he has done in the NL. It was said that I (as well as some others) were not surprised at his success and expected him to be successful all along. It is as simple as that. Thanks again for your two cents......

No torpedos necessary....... I am just here to express an opinion on occasion and tend not to like being told that my opinion is not wanted. If someone doesn't agree with me, fine, let's debate it. But it irritated me for someone to jump into the conversation basically telling me to stop discussing it. I'm over it now, but that was my issue.
