Evansville beats Western Kentucky tonight 72-40. Next up, North Carolina for the 7-1 Throbbing Purple Aces! Game is on ESPN at 6:00 Thursday night. Tyler Hansbrough will become UNC's all-time leading scorer, so there should be plenty of "face time" for UE and the MVC.

QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Dec 13, 2008 -> 06:59 PM) Wow...5-19 and you get hired to be Auburn's coach. WTF? C'mon Jason, tell me that was simply a shot at Heads? Chizik was a highly regarded defensive coordinator at both Auburn and Texas. How many coaches do you know that are going to win immediately at Iowa State? (maybe that was a shot at Heads, but not intended to be)

QUOTE (whitesoxfan101 @ Dec 13, 2008 -> 11:47 AM) Never seen a guy attempt 35 free throws in a college game, well or score 60 points for that matter. All in a losing effort, amazing. I saw Scott Haffner score 65 points for Evansville in a 109-83 win over Dayton in 1989. These were his stats and are accurate. I remember it like it was yesterday. He had 10 points in the first few minutes so a buddy and I were actually counting the whole way from that point. He had 30 at halftime and managed another 35 in the 2nd half. It was the most amazing individual performance I have ever seen. 23-29 FG 11-13 3pt FG 8-8 FT Think about it. He scored 65 points only missing six shots! Here is the NY Times story on it..... Guard Scores 65 for Evansville Haffner began his college career at the University of Illinois and transferred to Evansville after his freshman year (I think - might have been soph).

They're reporting locally that it is a done deal as well. Apparently they offered him the job and gave him a deadline to accept or reject. I now can see how the rumors about Muschamp got started. Someone from Auburn leaks they are about to hire a former Auburn D-Coordinator who left for Texas, the media makes mad assumptions and jumps on it. It was funny, the were playing on the Finebaum Show yesterday two media reports within 3 hours of each other. The first in Montgomery said the latest news was Steve Spurrier was now Auburn's top choice and Auburn was planning to go after him hard. Three hours later a Mobile TV station reports Will Muschamp was to be named Auburn's new Head Coach the next day. That's what happens when you have a media/state frenzy over college football. The Chizik reports seem to be solid this time, but you never know.

QUOTE (dasox24 @ Dec 9, 2008 -> 06:48 PM) Not that anyone on here cares about Tennessee football (or the SEC for that matter), but Lane Kiffin is already reinforcing his reputation as a great recruiter. Eric Gordon, a 4-star CB out of Nashville, committed to UT today after his previous leader was Alabama. UT was pretty much an afterthought for him until Kiffin was hired. After an in-home visit from Kiffin and Kiffin attending Gordon's state championship game, Gordon felt like he had such a good connection and feeling about UT that he committed. Yee Haw! Let's all sing Rocky Top!

The BCS Sucks Vent Thread
QUOTE (whitesoxfan101 @ Dec 8, 2008 -> 12:10 AM) Yeah you are right, but Tech still did beat Texas head to head so they have a legit beef that they weren't the 2nd Big 12 team in the BCS. Just like I defended Texas over OU because I thought the Big 12 South was a Texas/OU debate, I will defend Tech here since in this case it's more of a Tech/Texas debate. I know the Horns have the stronger resume, but head to head doesn't lie. That would be a legitimate argument. On a separate note: Everyone needs to be to remember the purpose of the BCS. The SOLE purpose of the BCS is to create a matchup between #1 and #2 for a Championship game. The BCS does not and never had the purpose of creating great mathups in the other bowl games. The conferences want the guaranteed slots in certain bowls so there are only so many matchups even possible. Basically, after the conference tie-ins, the bowls participate in an old-fashioned school yard pick em for the rest of the slots. So we can scream about how the BCS sucks because the matchups aren't great, but it doesn't matter because that is not the role of the BCS. Remember the schools themselves created the BCS and the rules that apply. The BCS is not a separate organization, it is simply a formula created by member schools to help better determine a National Champion.

QUOTE (whitesoxbrian @ Dec 7, 2008 -> 10:12 PM) I'm with palehosefn here. I can not believe TT didn't get a BCS game. Unreal. This IS NOT the first year of the BCS. Wake the hell up! Texas Tech was NOT eligible for a BCS game, so why would you not believe it? Why is it unreal? Because you don't understand how it works...... Let me explain it plain and simple. Only two teams from any conference can be in BCS games (with only one nearly impossible exception which won't ever happen). Wisconsin didn't get in as the #5 team in the country a couple of years ago, nor could TTU get in this year. If you want to whine about the rule, fine go for it. But it's not NEW!

QUOTE (Thunderbolt @ Dec 4, 2008 -> 08:34 PM) I nearly had a heart attack. That was too close. How the hell is playing Buffalo considered going into a Hornet's nest? And Jimbo is right, no heart attacks allowed in December. Unless you are a Buffalo fan looking for the biggest win in your program's history. Crap Evansville beat Buffalo by 15 (granted it was at home).

Official 2008-2009 College Football Thread
QUOTE (RockRaines @ Dec 3, 2008 -> 11:26 AM) Yes, because they were voted there from winning 12 games and losing none. I dont see an "Impressive" victory in the lot though. The best team they played and beat is #16 Georgia by 11 points, the same team that Fla beat by 31. They also outlasted LSU in OT, of course Fla beat them by 30. Fla had ONE close game and it was a one point loss to Ole Miss, Ala had a very close game with them too. The difference that I see is that Fla blew out every other team they played. that's a load of crap. You don't see impressive victories because you are looking at scores on paper and in restrospect. Alabama pounded the crap out of a top 10 team in Clemson. While Clemson did not have the season everyone expected, they were a talented team. Who's to say that the pounding Alabama gave them didn't cause their slide? No one can say that was or was not the catalyst. Team's seaon can turn for many reasons, injuries, a bad loss they never overcome, suspsensions, etc. Clemson very well may have been overrated, but they still finished 7-5 and Bama absolutely destroyed them on a neutral field. Saying they beat Georgia by 11 points just proves my point you are just making crap up without knowing much. Alabama pummeled Georgia and had a 31-0 lead at the half. You can't tell me that a team won't naturally let up on the gas pedal at that point. Their defense relaxed and Georgia scored a lot in the second half, but that game was NEVER in doubt. On the road, in the SEC, that was as an impressive a win as anyone had all year. How many top 10 wins did the Big 12 teams have on the road? Alabama went on the road to LSU, notoriously one of the toughest places to play and won. Yes they had to go to OT to win, but that game was as intense as any from the beginning. This was Nick Saban's 1st return to Baton Rouge and that game was marked on LSU's schedule a long time ago. Winning that game would have made LSU's season and they played like it. Yes, Alabama got a break because the SEC wasn't as strong as usual. Auburn and Tennessee were much easier wins than expected. A lot went right for Bama this year. But just because they don't score 60 points a game doesn't mean they are not a great team. To label them as not very good because they don't run up scores or because they didn't have sexy wins is assinine. They did not beat Florida, but played better than most people thought they would. I have a lot of respect for Florida, they are very well coached. They did things in the game yesterday that were obviously due to good scouting. Give them credit. But Alabama very much deserved to be in that game and could have won it with a break or two.

Tipping
I think tipping has become ridiculous. Everywhere you look there are tip jars or someone is telling you that you should tip this person or that. I have no problem tipping servers, bartenders and delivery drivers. I don't understand tipping someone who cuts your hair sometimes. If you get your hair done by appt and have a regular person who cuts your hair and you like their work, then by all means take care of them. If they work you in at the last minute, tip them. But if you go to a walk in place, why should that person expect a tip? I never understood tipping hotel maids. Cab drivers? Why, unless they do something specific to deserve one? Bathroom attendants? whatever - I can get my own towel And don't get me started on tip jars at concession stands at sporting events. What the hell is that? I'm sure there are others I am not thinking about at the moment, but that's enough for now. Lest anyone think I am a cheapskate, I am a former bartender who fully understands what it is like to be a tipped employee. Lastly, I am an even number tipper. When eating out at a restaurant, the total will always end up in an even number so the tip amount varies. It will either cost or gain the server a few cents, but it won't matter in the long run and selfishly, its easier to handle my banking that way. ha ha

Phil handled it with class and you could tell he was really choked up coaching his last game for the Vols... The players carried him off the field too. Very deserving moment for a great coach. If he is such a great coach, why did Tennessee fans run his ass out of town?

The Winter Meetings
Been to 8 Winter Meetings, from 1996-2003, two in Boston, two in Nashville, two in New Orleans and Dallas and Anaheim. There isn't much to do for fans as it is primarily a business conference. Basically the Winter Meetings are a convention for Minor League Baseball and MLB teams have found it good since a lot of people are all in the same place at the same time. Typically, MLB teams are there and having meetings and a dinner with their Minor League affiliates, there is a job fair, a trade show, some banquets and a lot of schmoozing. Baseball Operations folks are having planning meetings, discuss trades, and then go into the Rule V draft. Access will be limited basically to hotel common areas, bars, lobbies, etc. There will be some familiar faces roaming around, often looking hurried or stopping to talk to old cronies, but there will be mostly faces you don't know. My guess, with Vegas being the host, you won't see a lot of people at the hotel in the evening hours. New Orleans was the same way. Here are a few fun Winter Meetings experiences... 1. In Dallas, Tommy Lasorda was "holding court" in the Atrium at the Anatole Hotel until 2am. There were probably 40-50 people still up and hanging out drinking and listening to Tommy tell stories. He was hilarious, but times like this are rare, or you just have to be at the right place at the right time. 2. In Nashville, I was walking to the trade show an bumped into Peter Gammons coming out of the Media room. I asked him what was going on and he said the Dodgers had just signed Kevin Brown to a $120 million dollar deal and he was going on air to discuss it right then. I turned left and he turned right and we parted ways. 3. Each year at the meetings they have a Gala that is a lot of fun. When they are in an MLB city the Gala is always at the ballpark. Certain areas are open, there are typically locker room tours, etc. In Dallas, they did a really nice job with a reception in the club museum and a huge spread in the bar/suite area behind home plate. They also had a station with Cuervo 1800 shots and another where a Mexican was hand rolling cigars. After a few shots we noticed the cigar line getting long so we jumped in. While we were getting close a girl with Rangers ID tag came up and asked the roller how many he had left. They checked the box he kept the plugs in and she left. About two minutes later, she came back and said Mr. Hicks (the Rangers owner) needs 6 for a celebration. He rolled six for her and she was on her way. We got ours, smoked them (they were damned cigars, btw) and drank the rest of the night and didn't think much else about it. The next morning as we were checking out of the hotel to fly back, it was announced that the Rangers signed Alex Rodriguez for $250. So that was the celebration she spoke of. 4. Our owner had a dinner each year for everyone from his clubs (he had 6 or 7). In Anaheim, we had dinner catered into to the hotel. After a cocktail reception, I sat down at the dinner table and introduced myself to those around me that I did not know. I shook the hand of the guy next to me and he said his name was Steve Yeager. I asked which club he worked for and what he did. Funny thing is, I had no clue that it was the same Steve Yeager that won a World Series as a catcher with the Dodgers. He was doing some consulting work at the time for the club in San Bernadino and I had no clue. I wasn't expecting to run into a for player at a minor league dinner so I looked like an idiot. Of course, it was 30 seconds later that I noticed the World Series ring on his hand. He was cool though and we had a nice conversation over dinner. That's all I can think of off the top of my head. Mostly it is just a lot of food, drink and meeting people from other clubs and visiting with old friends. Oh and you mix in a little work during the day sometimes too.

I see this year's Indiana team as a group of 4th graders trying to play against the 8th graders at recess. They keep getting their asses kicked, but they keep coming back for me. Pretty soon, you start to root for them even though you know they have no chance. This team will be scrappy and play hard. I can admire that. We'll just see for how many 30+ point losses that lasts. lol

QUOTE (RockRaines @ Nov 22, 2008 -> 02:19 PM) Even though UM just lost me a bunch of money, I really enjoyed sending the seniors out like that. Go Sparty! If you bet on Michigan, you must not have watched the Wolverines much this year. The ONLY way they were going to keep that game close the whole game is if OSU let them. OSU tried to let them in the first half and Michigan was still hanging on by a thread with a nice effort from their defense. In reference to my comments about atttrition and inevitable departures at Michigan after the season, here is a quote from Jr. RB Brandon Minor after today's game. I think it illustrates more that attrition is necessary rather than a sign of trouble. And Brandon Minor: "You can't really blame Rich Rod because everybody on the team did not buy in like they're supposed to. We have a couple of guys not going hard. We'll correct that most definitely. That ain't going to happen on my watch as a senior."

QUOTE (Brian @ Nov 22, 2008 -> 12:26 PM) I think any Michigan fan that wants Rod gone after 1 year is an idiot. You always have to give him a few years to see how HIS recruits do and he has a good class coming in next year. This team, record wise, is worse than I thought they would be, but if they didn't turn the ball over so much, they may have 1 or two more W's. Who knows. And for the kids leaving, see ya! Don't want to commit yourself to the team or the program, leave. Buh bye. I agree. This year has been disappointing. But not a reason to run off a guy after a year. The thing that I think will really take time is rebuilding the offensive and defensive lines. The OL is incredibly young and aside from potentially some true freshmen, I am not convinced it is very talented all the way down the depth chart. The defensive line will have to completely start over after this year and there is not much depth so we are looking at a couple of years before that unit will completely rebound.
