QUOTE(THEWOOD @ Aug 13, 2006 -> 10:31 AM) OSU plays Michigan at home and goes on the road to Iowa for a night game. Going to be very tough to win there at night. It is going to be interesting to see how good both Texas and or OSU is in the second week. We will find out a lot about both those teams. If OSU happens to lose, luckily it will be so early in the season that if they run the table the rest of the season they will have a great chance of playing in the NC game. 20 days to OSU vs NIU. Setember 9 - 7:00pm Central National coverage on ABC in High Definition This is what college football is all about. Great intersectional games early in the season rather than loading up on cupcakes. ABC is stepping up their HD offerings this year, which is a great thing!

QUOTE(Soxbadger @ Aug 9, 2006 -> 02:05 PM) Zoom, Its not that Auburn cant, its just that watching their performance last year against Wisconsin, I just did not see a team that would be a NC contender. I really liked Irons last year, but Auburn just was unable to control the tempo through the running game like Wisconsin was. Calhoun went for more yards then the entire Auburn team gained I believe. As for Wisconsin, its basically impossible to tell at this point. New coach, new RB, and no one exactly knows what Beilema is going to bring to the table. Chryst was the OC last year so there should be some cohesiveness, as its unlikely that BB will really try and screw with the offense as he is a defensive guy. I assume they are going to stick with their strength, they have what should be one of the top OL's, and have possibly the best LT in the NCAA in Joe Thomas. They have PJ Hill (big RB) and Rowan (quick rb) so I think they are going to try something a little different using Hill as a Dayne type (although Dayne was more finesse then power) and Rowan as a Calhoun/Davis. But its impossible to really know, to many unknowns. The only thing that is for certain is that the Badgers should have one of the top OL's and one of the top DL's in the Big 10. How the rest of their units play will determine if they are a Rose Bowl contender, of if they will be fighting to play in one of the more average bowl games. You're just going to have to trust me on this one. I am a Big Ten fan who lives down here in Alabama. I saw Auburn extensively last year. They played like dogcrap against Wisconsin last year (credit the Badgers) and they completely overlooked them. The feeling was that game would be one of the most lopsided bowl games and I promise you they weren't predicting Auburn to be on the side they were on. That one game was not representative Auburn's team last year. They lost to GA Tech in the first game of the year after replacing five 1st Round NFL draft picks, including their QB and 95% of their rushing yards from the previous season. They lost @ LSU in OT 20-17 when their FG kicker missed 5 FG's, including one that would have won the game at the end of regulation and one in OT that would have sent the game to a second extra stanza. For the record, he was 12-15 the rest of the season. This year, their road games include only Mississippi State, South Carolina, Ole Miss and Alabama (where they haven't lost in 10 years). If you go by one game, I can understand you being puzzled. An early loss could change everything, but having LSU, Florida and Georgia all at home doesn't hurt their chances.

QUOTE(Soxbadger @ Aug 8, 2006 -> 02:13 PM) Pre-season predictions are a joke, no one really knows because its impossible to judge how replacements are going to do. Im not going to start opening my big mouth until I actually see a game or two and can judge what is going on. Right now my biggest shock is Auburn getting so much respect after they were manhandled by Wisconsin's offense last season. Auburn will be very good. They will also learn from that loss. No offense badger, but Auburn was a better team than Wisky last year. Obviously they weren't in the bowl game, but Auburn went in that game way too overconfident. They thought they were going to walk on the field and run all over Wisconsin. The Badgers, playing for Coach Alvarez, had other ideas. While Wisconsin has only three starters coming back on offense and a new coach, Auburn returns many skill players on a very deep team. They'll have a few lineman to replace, two linebackers are suspended for the first couple of games hurting their depth, and they are young at WR, but otherwise they return most of the skill players. No need to be shocked. Their schedule is favorable with all of their toughest games at home.

Hall of Fame Idea
QUOTE(Buehrle>Wood @ Aug 2, 2006 -> 02:07 PM) So basically copy Springfield, Mass and make it a baseball Hall of Fame instead of a MLB Hall of Fame. You won't find anyone to disagree with you. However, I'm sure there are certain obstacles that would have to be overcome. Well, please allow me to be the first to completely disagree then. MLB is the elite level of baseball. Those are the players who deserve to be in. While I am okay with considering the careers of players in other countries such as Japan and Cuba in their overall profile, I do not think they belong if they do not perform at HOF standards here. As of right now, Ichiro is the only such player that deserves consideration in my opinion. Livan Hernandez, El Duque and Jose Contreras have not done enough here in MLB to receive consideration. There is no way they belong. Look at it this way. A Japanese player who plays 15 years in Japan and then comes to the US and plays 3 or 4 years before he retires does not deserve consideration for the MLB HOF. There has to be at least a reasonable amount of time spent here to consider their time overseas. Also, a mediocre longer career here should not merit consideration. The bottom line, is if they have a HOF caliber career here but it is shortened because of their playing in their home country for many years, then that should be taken into consideration. Cooperstown is not the Cuban HOF, nor the Japanese HOF, nor should it be!

Jurassic DFA
QUOTE(JimH @ Jul 26, 2006 -> 07:08 PM) Rex, they liked how Sandy Alomar works with their pitchers and the coaches asked for him. Doesn't mean the coaches are right, but Fasano has no knowledge of working with the staff and has about as much mobility as Alomar these days ... not much. I hear ya, but I am just puzzled by the love for Alomar. I'm not trying to profess that Fasano is a big-time star, but his mobility is not a problem. Don't be fooled by his size. He handles himself very well behind the plate and handles pitchers very well. Pitchers like throwing to him. It certainly has not been his bat that has kept him in the big leagues.

QUOTE(Kalapse @ Jul 26, 2006 -> 05:00 PM) Um actually the Sox dealt Lummy and Cortez for the Righty power arm of Mike MacDougal, they gave up B.J. LaMura for Alomar. If the Sox gave up Lumsden and Cortez for Alomar, Kenny Williams would have had a hard time making it out of Chicago alive. details, details....... I guess my point, while not is strong remains, they had other options. I just would have liked to see Chicago native Fasano in a Sox uni.

High school baseball in Iowa
QUOTE(Heads22 @ Jul 24, 2006 -> 02:11 PM) Talking to someone who knows..... Iowa high school baseball players who are drafted can sign at any time, and when they do they forfeit eligibility. Also, the season will not be moved as long as "native Iowans" are in charge, according to my editor. If baseball was moved to the spring, it'd kill track, tennis, golf, and baseball all at once. If golf was in turn moved to fall, it'd still kill golf, because the best golfers normally play football. Iowa must have a ton of really small schools or something, because having track, tennis, golf and baseball going at the same time (or some similar combination) happens in every state. By the way, where does wrestling fit in??

Seattle Mariners designated Carl Everett for assignment today. RESIST THE TEMPTATION KENNY!!!! The Phillies traded C Sal Fasano to the Yankees for minor league 2B Hector Made. The Yankees designate C Kelly Stinnett for assignment to make room for Fasano. Now I know there is some kind of love fest for Sandy Alomar, but the Sox have to trade Tyler Lumsden, a AA All-Star and Daniel Cortez, a young kid with good potential to get his 40-yr old butt.... Yet the Yankees only have to give up a Class A 2B hitting .286 with no power and only 6 SB to get at worst and equivalent player. Something makes no sense there.

Harold Reynolds
The site linked in a previous post suggesting sexual harassment, has recanted "at least somewhat" that and said they are now hearing Reynolds had it out with BBTN producers over how they were handling ARod. Who knows the real reason......... But I am willing to bet it has nothing to do with Bonnie Bernstein.

Sox Acquire Alomar for Lamura, Widger DFA'd
QUOTE(CySox @ Jul 23, 2006 -> 07:52 PM) Comparable to Gary Majewski you say? Majewski would look real good in this bullpen we have. Lets say Lamura becomes a lot like Majewski in 5 years, would you trade him for Alomar? Note I said his ceiling is comparable to Gary Majewski. Minor League relievers are a dime a dozen to a point. Losing such a player is not a huge deal. Some will work out. Some won't.

Sox Acquire Alomar for Lamura, Widger DFA'd
The skinny on LaMura: A super nice guy, with a really hot girlfriend (in the minors, that matters ). He has excellent stuff that could get him to the big leagues one day. That said, he is 25 and in his 3rd year at AA. Losing a pitcher like B.J. is not a big loss to an organization. His ceiling is probably comparable to Gary Majewski. Great character guy but not a real high ceiling. What has me scratching my head is why Sandy Alomar? What can he bring to the table at this point in his career? Hell, the Sox could have picked up Sal Fasano, who was DFA'd by the Phillies yesterday, for practically nothing. He'd give the Sox better D and a little power. Seems like a strange move to me. What's next? Carl Everett again???

Barons Are going to make an announcment tomorrow
Considering the Sox World Series trophy will be at the Hoover Met Saturday night, this was simply timing. Wish I saw this thread a day earlier so I could save you boys some worrying. ;-) JimH, Jason, if you ever get off your arses and get to Birmingham, I'd be happy to show you around. FWIW, the Barons actually play in the city of Hoover, not Birmingham, but that's just being picky. Rickwood Field in Birmingham is also a must see.

Dontrelle Willis almost a White Sox?
QUOTE(Felix @ Jul 21, 2006 -> 01:23 PM) Shouldn't it be "almost a White Sock"? As long as BMac, Sweeney, and Anderson aren't involved, I don't care if most other minor league talent is traded. More so "almost a member of the White Sox"

Wicked Pics of our Great City
I check out skyscraperpage.com about once a month, looking for new photos. Here is a link someone from there sent me from a guy that travels a lot and takes a lot of great photos. His page has lots of great shots of Chicago as well as other cities. It has some pretty good shots of US Cellular in the 2004 section also. http://www.tomexe.com/travel.html

Rules Interpretation Question
QUOTE(SoxFan76 @ Jul 17, 2006 -> 10:27 AM) I did that at first base. They gave him the base. If it was a throw, he should have gotten two bases. A batted ball, three.

Buying A Car
As others have suggested, I'd go used. Buy a quality car about 3-4 yrs old with reasonable mileage (not over 50k). You can get more car for your money and if you buy a reliable car, repairs much of an issue. You can also negotiate an extended warranty (I know the naysayers say they aren't a great "deal") to 100k miles. That can give you a bit more peace of mind. In 2001, I bought a 1998 Lexus ES300 for less than what my girlfriend paid for a 2001 Accord LX. Be patient and shop around. Find a local used car deal that specializes in nice used cars. You can probably find some that sell at or near wholesale. Places like Carmax are good for those that don't like to haggle and do a lot of research. They back the cars they sell and offer a reasonable price. But with a little work, better prices can be had. Sometimes much better prices. Sites like the aforementioned edmunds.com and also kbb.com (Kelly Blue Book) can be very helpful. The best advice I can give is: 1. Have a game plan before you ever talk to a sales person. If you want to just browse, do just that and don't fall into letting the sales person lead you. Give them little or no info at first. 2. Never tell them how much of a monthly payment you can afford. My first car (I call my idiot purchase), I bought a new Accord and told them I could afford $300 a month. I didn't pay attention to the other "numbers". After I signed the papers and took delivery, I found that they financed me at a high interest rate for 66 months, not 60 to get the payment to $306. Fortunately, with a little guidance, I realized my mistake and refinance at the local credit union less than a week later, for 60 months and about 2-3% less on the interest rate. Always focus on getting the best purchase price you can, not the rate or the payment. 3. Do not be afraid to walk away. Never buy into the pitch that "this offer is good today only". That's horses***. If a dealer wants to sell a car, you can negotiate the right price anytime as long as he has the inventory. 4. Go to multiple dealerships to get a feel for how they treat you. 5. Be patient and don't feel like you have to jump into anything. Before you make a final decision, run the numbers buy someone you know that has experience in buying cars. It never hurts to get a 2nd opinion. It will make you feel more at ease once the purchase is complete. 6. Be patient. I think I mentioned that, didn't I?

Rules Interpretation Question
QUOTE(Reddy @ Jul 14, 2006 -> 09:27 PM) ok but what if the other outfielder had simply picked up the ball? a ball in the air that hits off of a glove or another player and is subsequently caught before hitting the ground is an out... so..? If the glove is laying on the ground with the ball in it, it is considered dropped. The fact it is still in the glove has no bearing on it if the glove is not still on the player's hand. Now if the OF is laying on the ground with the glove on his hand and the ball in it and another OF takes it out, then you have an out. It is all about control. A glove with a ball in it, not connected to a player is not under the control of any player.

Rules Interpretation Question
It's not a catch, plain and simple. I had a similar situation occur when I coached a LL team, but rather than two players colliding, it was a player and a fence. Here is the supporting text from the definition of a catch in Official Baseball Rules: In this situation, dropping the ball, regardless of its position in relation to the glove, applies. GoRowand was correct in this case that voluntary and intentional release of the ball from the glove is necessary after such a collision. A perfect example is a few years ago, an MLB outfielder (Pittsburgh, I think) caught a ball on the fly and ran into the wall. After hitting the ground his glove fell off with the ball still in it and laid on the warning track next to him as he lay in pain. His fellow OF came over to see if he was okay ignoring the ball, assuming the catch. The batter circled the bases for an inside-the-park HR. The Pirates (again, I think) made a hell of an argument but lost. The HR rightfully stood.

Zidane
QUOTE(SoxFan1 @ Jul 9, 2006 -> 11:06 PM) I'm sorry but that is a flop by Materazzi. I mean, it was a vicious headbutt, but you don't fall like that after a headbutt to the chest. It would be more of a stumble and fall backwards. But nonetheless, a bonehead play by Zidane. Way to let your country down... Watch that again and look at the positioning of the two players. Tell me when the Italian player had time to think about flopping. That had everything to do with motion and balance and nothing to do with acting. There is no way he could have know that was coming, so how could he flop? A flop would have to include some measure of pre-mediation. In basketball, you know the guy is driving the lane, you are expecting him to make contact. In this case, I can't see any way he knew Zidane would do what he did.

QUOTE(zenryan @ Jul 9, 2006 -> 10:11 PM) lol. I love that guy but what a dumbass move. way to let your team down and look at that dive! I know he got hit hard but atleast stumble backwards. that was a WWE type flop There's no way in hell that was a dive! Anyone would fall like that when hit like that by surprise. And there is no way in hell the Italian player was expecting that.
