American Idol Predictions
QUOTE(Kid Gleason @ May 5, 2006 -> 09:35 AM) That's cool. It's just that you made the comment about your age and I was not catching what you were saying. I didn't know if you were saying you are young, so Chris is your thing, or you are old...and whatever. I'm of the old variety. I'm old. I think Chris is good, but I think sliced bread is better. I just happened to like his performance of Renegade. I never said it was better than Styx original, I just enjoyed it. On the flip side, I am not too old to be able to enjoy newer (remember its relative) bands. I went to a festival tonight with Gin Blossoms, Cowboy Mouth, Sister Hazel and Blues Traveler. Tomorrow will see Better than Ezra, POD (eh) and Live. Not new bands, but newer than Styx anyway...

American Idol Predictions
QUOTE(Kid Gleason @ May 2, 2006 -> 09:05 PM) How old are you Rex? The original "Renegade" had a much more "intense" and energy filled vocal performance. There was no attitude at all from Chris. Old enough to remember the original well. I enjoyed the performance pure and simple.

Lease vs buy
Buy a car that has been leased and turned back in. Allow someone else to take the depreciation hit. Find a nice car, with 30,000 - 40,000 miles on it and you can get a better car than you would buy knew. I bought a 3yr old Lexus ES300 with 42k miles with an extended warranty to 100k miles for the same as what my ex-girlfriend paid for a new 2-door Accord LX. Be patient and find the right deal and you can get more for your money that way.

American Idol Predictions
I thought it was pretty solid myself. I also liked Taylor's 1st song. Maybe it's my age, but I was entertained by both.

Better Business Bureau
As a general rule, the BBB handles complaints in the following manner: 1. Customer files complaint 2. BBB considers the possible validity of the complaint. For instance if someone complains that their Gas bill is too high, they would dismiss it unless there seems to be an error on the bill. The BBB can't do anything about pricing issues, especially in regards to regulated companies. If someone says "Company A charged me $500 when Company B would have sold it to me for $300" there is no complaint. Different companies charge differently for their services and the BBB won't get into the middle of that unless there are extenuating circumstances or something illegal going on. 3. The BBB notifies the company that a complaint has been filed against it and gives them a chance to respond. 4. After the response, the BBB will either dismiss the complaint, consider it resolved, or respond to try to help get it resolved.

Now a cover boy, Sowers awaiting call to the Show
I saw Sowers pitch a couple of times when playing for Vanderbilt and REALLY liked him. He isn't overpowering, but he is definitely a pitcher.

Westin Hotels - Chicago/Milwaukee
Heads here is the skinny.... Try priceline.com and use the Name Your Own Price option. Choose Chicago, put in your dates and then select North Michigan Ave. (assuming that is your preferred choice). Then select 3-star upscale to ensure you won't get stuck in a fleabag. Put in a bid of $70/night (it will be that plus taxes and I believe a $5.95/night fee). Fill out all the info, including your credit card info and go for it. You should have an answer if you have a room in less than 10 minutes. A few notes: Once you have a room, it is non-refundable, you're in. If you choose 3-star upscale, you will be safe with getting a nice place. If you do not get a room, go back and try again. All you have to do is make one change. So add an area (Millenium Park, Loop and Grant Park) or change the level of the hotel (you can go up). Another trick is if there is an area that you know does not have a 3-star hotel, then add that area and up your price slightly. If that area doesn't have a 3-star (or above) hotel, then you bear no risk of being put there, so it doesn't matter if you want that area or not. You can try several times by just making one change (changing your dates also works). Your odds will be much better if you are looking at weekend nights. Westin and similar hotels in major cities are typically business hotels and they will hold their rate on week nights more so than on weekends. Some real life examples I have experienced through Priceline: Westin Hotel Michigan Avenue - $65/night Palmer House Hotel - $75/night W Hotel (near the Sears Tower) - $70/night Wyndham Hotel (Atlanta) - $50 night Marriot Hotel Downton (Detroit) - $40/night (Sunday night, one night) Doubletree Suites Hotel Buckhead (Atlanta) - $65 Hyatt Regency Hotel (Louisville) - $45/night Wyndham Hotel (Memphis) - $40/night These are all real deals. I have never paid more than $75/night in a major city on a weekend since the inception of Priceline. And I have never been disappointed in the quality of the hotel I got, even though you don't know until which one it will be until you actually have paid for it. PM me if you need help. Lastly, someone before said it already, but the Westin and W Hotel (both Starwood Hotels) have amazingly comfortable beds. And the Westin Michigan Avenue is the visiting team hotel for most, if not all MLB teams coming into Chicago. I have drank alongside guys from the Cardinals and the Red Sox in the nice bar in the Westin. Hope that helps.

American Idol Predictions
I'm chalking up the Bo Bice "incident" as internet rumor. I haven't seen or heard this story substantiated anywhere. No major new source that I know has covered it and the only thing you see is "our witness" or "one worker". For now, I am just not buying it. I thought Kat was much better last night than the judges gave her credit for. I also thought Taylor was solid last night, but maybe I am just biased. I watched him back a 2nd time and didn't think he was bad at all, as the judges claimed. My predicted order of finish: 1. Kat 2. Taylor 3. Chris 4. Paris 5. Elliott Losing Pickler tonight was the right move.

Visa / Mastercard w/o bank account
Don't some banks still offer secured credit cards with spending limits set at the level which you deposit? You can put whatever amount in you want. It would not be tied to an existing bank account, but simply become an account of its own. If I understood you correctly, this is different than what you were describing. Would this give you what you are looking for??

SPIDALE
QUOTE(bogie @ Apr 23, 2006 -> 10:12 AM) you couldn't resist could you? I asked because maybe i know the person... how as in how are you related specifically. You tossed it up there, I had to hit it. And I knew why you asked, but it was still too fat a softball to resist.

QUOTE(bogie @ Apr 21, 2006 -> 10:45 PM) really? How? Typically one becomes a cousin by being the son or daughter of the sibling of your mother or father. Not sure in this case, but that is how I see it happen in most cases.

American Idol Predictions
Am I the only one that thought Rod Stewart's live performance last Wednesday night sucked? Like Kellie with her song the night before, I thought he butchered a good song. Too bad he wouldn't let Katharine sing it. She'd have kicked ass.

American Idol Predictions
Right person went home tonight... Should be an interesting six weeks and I really do believe that any of the performers could go home in any of the upcoming weeks. Kellie better not follow up this week with another bad one, or no tight slinky dress will be able to save her.

American Idol Predictions
Good night overall tonight. The group as a whole was much better than in previous weeks. I thought Paris and Katharine were the best, with Taylor, Chris, and Elliott not far behind. Ace wasn't bad, but I think he is still very vulnerable this week. Kellie wasn't so hot and surprisingly admitted as much. Anyone that thinks she isn't dumb was proven wrong tonight. She flat out admitted she sucked before the judges spoke. Any intelligence at all would have stopped her from doing that.

Anyone know where I can find a video highlight of Iguchi's play in the infield over the weekend? The play where he basically threw a runner out upside down??

Income Tax Deadline Ahead
QUOTE(Texsox @ Apr 16, 2006 -> 07:23 AM) I agree it doesn't work for some people. If we are talking a few dollars a paycheck, then we are only talking about a couple hundred dollar return. You are correct, that's pretty close already and about as close as you can get. I'm talking about the $1200 + refunds. Those individuals should consider an autodraft into their mutual funds of that $100 to $200 a month. As far as the situations change during the year, I can think of some things that would decrease their tax liability, like the birth of a child, buying a home, unemployment, etc. But that is something to be concerned about. Many people could review their last couple years tand have a pretty good estimate of what they should pay. If you been claiming 2 dependents and getting a $1500 refund the past two years, see what claiming 3 would do for your net pay. Then from what I've seen with the Fast Pay, advances and etc. It's worse than just taking an advance on a credit card. After overpaying all year, now they want the money fast, and pay extra for electronic filing and a cash advance. Of all the regrets I have in life, not understanding it's better to be earning interest than paying interest until I was in my thirties, is one of the biggest. Maximizing your earnings, even starting with small amounts, is a discipline I wish I learned much earlier. Finally, yes you may only be earning 2 or 3%, but if you are also paying 5 or 6% to get a rapid refund, then the gain is much bigger, between 7 and 10%. But not everyone does the FastPay, advances, etc. That is definitely a bad decision financially. I do chose to file electronically and use direct deposit, but that only cost me roughly 1.5%. On a $1200 refund as you pointed out, the difference between not getting interest and in filing electronically is likely $50 or less. I have no problem giving up $50 for a lump sum that I can use for something specific, be it vacation, home improvement or whatever. If everyone was perfectly disciplined with their money.... That will never happen so there is no reason to go any farther.

Income Tax Deadline Ahead
QUOTE(Texsox @ Apr 13, 2006 -> 12:48 PM) Send 'em more during the year and getting a bigger check, and a warning I am amazed by people (not you) who look at this like a savings account. They knowingly overpay during the year, giving a zero interest loan, and enjoying a big refund, that they reduce by paying for electronic filing and a cash advance. Why not pay the correct amount, put the oberpayment in a savings account, and earn interest? I gotta disagree with you on this one Texsox. While your thinking is correct financially, it doesn't fly in most cases when applying it to the real world for three reasons. 1. It is much, much less likely that someone will save that extra few bucks a paycheck they will get back by adjusting their withholding to accomodate the above approach. A few extra bucks each week (or however one gets paid) is likely to be spent on "stuff", often times stuff that isn't even a necessity. 2. How does one know exactly how much to adjust their withholding in an attempt to reach a zero overpayment/zero underpayment scenario? Things change for many people within a year. I believe that most people would prefer NOT to have to write a check of any size come each May. 3. The difference between a zero interest loan and the interest earned on a basic savings account is next to nothing for most people. Very few people make the kind of money that it would make a difference, and those that do aren't worried about a refund in the context most of us would. The amount of interest earned in current market conditions nowhere near offsets the benefit of gaining a fairly sizable sum after taxes are filed. I'll take my refund every year and utilize that money in a positive way, rather than blowing a few extra bucks a week.
