CWS: Playoffs will be starting soon
I'll take this ending!!! CHARLOTTESVILLE – The Evansville Purple Aces remained alive in the Charlottesville Regional with a 10-6 come-from-behind victory over Lehigh in an elimination game Saturday at Davenport Field. Evansville scored seven runs in the bottom of the ninth to erase a three-run deficit, capped by Robbie Minor’s walk-off grand slam.

Recruiting Thread
Not sure this belongs here, but wasn't sure where to put it. Mods feel free to move it as you see fit, whether to another thread or to its own thread if that is warranted.... Anybody hear about the transfer rule the NCAA passed? The new rule allows a 5th yr senior who has graduated and has one year of eligibility remaining to transfer to another school and be able to play immeditely. The athlete would not have to sit out a year as is required with normal transfers. The rule may have been passed last year, but seems to just now be getting attention. It's purpose is to allow an athlete who has graduated, to transfer to another school for graduate school, not limiting his grad school choices. The first example, is a QB from Arizona who graduated in three years, will transfer to Vanderbilt this year and be eligible immeditely. He is a rare instance because he actually has two years of eligibility remaining and has graduated.

CWS: Playoffs will be starting soon
Evansville loses to South Carolina 4-2 in their opening round game this morning, after being rained out last night. They will play again in about 30 minutes taking on Lehigh.

Boston
We went to a restaurant called the Atlantic Fish Company on Boylston St. It was very nice and the food was good. Actor Mark Walberg (sp?) was eating a couple of tables away, for whatever that is worth. Legal Sea Foods is a restaurant well known for its clam chowder. Definitely try some Boston clam chowdah while you are there.

QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ May 31, 2006 -> 09:48 AM) 1988 right? My HS trainer worked a lot with Benes back in the day at Evansville after he had surgery... Heck you might even know him. Yep, '88. What trainer are you talking about?

Condo selling question
You sure as hell can pay more for a place than it appraises for. That happens all the time, especially in California. If their mortgage required 10% down, they would require 10% of the $137k + the additional money to make up the difference. There are definitely ways around it. In fact, I sold my first townhouse for $124,500 and it only appraised for $121,000. The sale price was never an issue. The sale price could be double the appraised value if that is what the buyer is willing to pay. The key is, they will have to come up with the funding above the appraised value.

CWS: Playoffs will be starting soon
QUOTE(Chisoxfn @ May 29, 2006 -> 11:25 PM) Did they make the tourney back in the day's of Andy Benes? That was 1998. We beat Arizona State 1-0 in front of a packed house at Sun Devil stadium. He was clocked at 98mph in the 9th inning of that game, which took him from a sure first rounder to the #1 overall pick. ASU averaged 13 runs a game that year and came all the way back to make it deep into the CWS after we beat them. Shutting them out was a huge deal. I still remember the headline in the Phoenix newspaper "Ace Trumps Devils" with a huge photo of Benes on the front of the sports page. Enough reminiscing.........

CWS: Playoffs will be starting soon
Let's not leave out Evansville, winner of the Missouri Valley for the first time. Evansville won the Valley regular season title by a half game over Missouri State. They proceeded to lose their first round game in the tournament to Bradley and then promptly run-ruled SIU and Wichita State and then beat Missouri St. twice to take the tournament title. This is, I believe Evansville's 3rd ever trip to the tourney. We went to Arizona State my sophomore year and beat the host Sun Devils before falling to UNLV (Donovan Osborne) and Central Michigan. A few years ago they went to Florida State and lost their first two, I believe. They win the Valley and draw South Carolina playing at Virginia this weekend. South Carolina is a good team, but anything can happen. One thing I do know is that USC will have about 50x more fans there than Evansville will.

QUOTE(SnB @ May 29, 2006 -> 11:38 AM) I've always been confused about the selection rules. I assume if you win your conference tourney, you're automatically in, right? And then the rest is just a selection comitee like basketball? Teams have to bid to be a host, which means they have to be competitive enough on the field to earn it as well as put up enough $$.

Sweet. I was hoping we would get positive news on him. Beating out Kentucky for him makes it a little sweeter. Rivals has him listed as a 3-star player and Scout.com gives him 4-stars.

Sanctions announced against Sampson
QUOTE(Heads22 @ May 25, 2006 -> 10:25 PM) It's been the general sentiment that Sampson's connection to the JUCO athletes allows athletes with admittedly lower academic prospects to somehow stay eligible. I realize that happens many places, but I've seen it highlighted there. So a guy isn't clean because he recruits athletes his school will admit and works to make sure they stay eligible? Every school has tutoring programs and helps athletes academically. I'm not seeing anything resembling a smoking gun here.

Sanctions announced against Sampson
QUOTE(Heads22 @ May 25, 2006 -> 05:38 PM) I haven't said anything about IU or anything, but it's a known fact that Sampson isn't the cleanest guy out there. Following since it was the Big 8, I've heard it for a while. known fact? Are there other sanctions other than the current situation I am missing?

American Idol Predictions
Just saw an interesting piece on the local news..... A woman from San Francisco who was at the Finals at the Kodak Theater last night, chose to fly to Birmingham today to take in "Taylor-mania", as she put it. She said she wanted to come see where the music comes from and experience tonight with the locals. She was at a local club called WorkPlay, which was opened a few years ago by former MTV VeeJay Alan Hunter. It is a musician oriented club where local artists as well as established artists play in front of smaller crowds in a music oriented place. The woman is writing a book about this season on American Idol, with the focus of a middle-aged woman who caught the fever. She will talk about how she got sucked in to American Idol message boards and chronicle some of the people she has "met" over the course of the year. Maybe I should write a book about the Sox Championship season and all of my message board "friends"? LOL

American Idol Predictions
I don't see Taylor as becoming a big "hit machine". I can see him making great music, even time-tested music, but not necessarily popular radio type music. As far as tonight's show goes, I think Kat was much better tonight than she has been in the competition. Not sure if it was the songs or if she just relaxed with the competition no longer. Some may call it cheesy, but I found all the stars singing with the Idols and the songs tonight very entertaining.

American Idol Predictions
While I think both Kat and Taylor are very good, I think the thing thta separates the two are that Taylor comes across as having been there before. Kat seems surprised at both criticism and her success. She seems like a little kid seeking out appreciation, rather than a seasoned performer competing to win a huge competition. There is an innocence to that, but Taylor just seems to live the part of the winner more so than Kat. Either way, I think they will both be successful. QUOTE(Soxy @ May 23, 2006 -> 08:02 PM) Yeah, Kat's dress made her look much more pear shaped than she probably is. . . Pear shaped.... yeah, that's the adjective I was thinking of. American Idol Predictions
I am a big Taylor fan, but is anyone else sick of hearing him yell Soul Patrol 10x after he sings? Once, maybe? But this is a little overkill. And speaking of too tight, how about Kat's last dress?? I don't think that was flattering at all for her.

American Idol Predictions
Tuesday night should be a good night. Two of the three songs each will sing will reportedly be repeats from some point this season. I predicted about 6 months ago that Kat would win and Taylor will finish second. Two weeks ago I reversed course. I do think Taylor will win, but it seems the results aren't very reliable at this point. With all three contestants at 33% and change last week, that just tells me that the phone systems are maxed. I don't think the voting would be so close if there was more capacity to take votes. When people reportedly call for two hours and get busy signals 90-95% of the time, then the votes aren't getting counted. I'm not sure if they can remedy that this week, but as popular as this show has gotten, the voting procedure certainly has come into question in my mind. Either way, I think all of the top 5 or 6 contestants were very talented this year, more so than others. I think you will see at least decent success from many of them. Tuesday night should be fun.

TV Habits
QUOTE(Kid Gleason @ May 19, 2006 -> 08:06 AM) My TV serves mostly as a monitor for my DVD player. Well, that was until I went HD!!! HD does indeed change one's watching habits. I rarely watch programming not in HD anymore.
