QUOTE(Gene Honda Civic @ Sep 17, 2006 -> 01:37 PM) I think there are about 3 or 4 teams in the SEC that can give either of those teams a good run, but the SEC is just going to beat up on itself. Especially since they have a title game and the B10 P10 don't Auburn is the most likely to get out of the SEC alive. I am not sold on Florida as the #5 team in the country. Georgia is interesting, but starting a freshman QB. If they can get to the Florida game in Jacksonville on Oct. 28 undefeated, then they could be very dangerous. Getting Tennessee at home will help. LSU is very good as well, but at a distinct disadvantage after losing to Auburn Saturday. Auburn definitely has the best balance of talent/team/schedule.

Perfect Pizza
Whoever started this thread knows how to get me up on my soapbox! In general: 1. The staple for pizza is sausage and pepperoni - When judging a pizza joint, there is where you have to start. 2. Gourmet pizza places such as California Pizza Kitchen and Mellow Mushroom don't count. While their pizza is respectable, tossing any food known to mankind on a pizza just doesn't qualify for a great pizza joint. 3. Is Costco a Chicago-based company?? - Lately I have bought Palermo's thin crust, Home Run Inn thin and Pizzeria UNO calzone's there frozen. 4. Outside of Chicago the best thick/stuffed pizza is made by Tortugas pizza here in Hoover, AL. What started as a small 10-table restaurant is now 3 restaurant's strong and growing. The owner's once worked for Edwardo's in Chicago. The pizza is not the same as Edwardo's but that background allows them to make true authentic Chicago pizza in Alabama. This is the only place I have had real Chicago pizza outside of the city. See photos below: 5. Outside of Chicago, the best thin crust pizza I have ever had is Turoni's in Evansville, IN. They have the best sauce I have ever had. 5. Lastly, the chains (PJ's, PH, Dominos) are for convenience only. They cannot be even considered in a great pizza debate (believe it or not, some outside of Chicago will mention them)! Chicago: 1. I haven't had bad pizza there, but I tend to lean toward Giordano's. I liked UNO and DUE as well. 2. I don't care for Gino's East and Home Run Inn's crust because it has a cornmeal base, but the rest of the pizza is good. They just aren't my favorites. 3. I haven't had Lou Malnati's, but would certainly like to. One of these days I am going to break down and order one online and have it shipped here. /end soapbox

5 years ago today...
Sorry I am a day late on this, but I thought I would share as well. Also, sorry for the long story. The Barons had just lost in the Divisional round of the Southern League playoffs, so that day was the first day of the offseason for the staff. Had the Barons won their previous game, they would have been scheduled to host the 1st game of the Championship Series that night. I woke up as normal, and right as I was about to get in the shower, my roommate called my cell phone. He told me to turn on the TV. I turned it on and they were trying to figure out what had happened. At this point it was all speculation. I watched as the 2nd plane hit. For a split second I thought it was another replay until I realized it was the other tower. My jaw dropped and I remember whoever was on the news wondering if it was some kind of air traffic control screw up. I knew immediately when the 2nd plane hit that it was no screw up. I finally pulled myself away from the TV and got ready for work. I knew something big was happening, but it is hard to truly understand the magnitude watching on TV. I'm sure it was something different for everybody that triggered what was really going on. What did it for me was when I was in the car on the way to the office, they said that all air traffic in the entire country was shut down. At that point, it made me realize that was MUCH more than just an NYC thing. When I got to the office, everyone was crowded around the TV's, not even thinking about work. Fortunately, we did not have to think about whether we would be hosting a baseball game that night. At about 11, the GM brought everyone together and allowed anyone to make comments that wanted to. His comments were that business was done for the day and that he recommended every go do what they needed to do to deal with this, whether staying, going home or whatever. My roommate and I both left the office, forgot about baseball completely and went home and stayed glued to the TV the rest of the day. The only other thing that stood out to me is the level of continuous coverage. Basically network programming was taken over for a week and coverage was non-stop. Never had I recalled such long-lasting event. Since, Hurricane Katrina rivaled that, but until that point, I had never witnessed anything of the sort.

Official High School Football Thread!!!
QUOTE(MSHAWKS @ Sep 10, 2006 -> 08:41 PM) There is not a better high school football team in the country this year. Warren Central would stay with, if not beat, nearly anyone. Let's not make that assumption too quickly. I know Warren Central is good, but don't forget the little team in Hoover, AL. It's a shame they can't play due to IHSAA rules. Hoover is willing to play the best and has done so. Hoover opened the season on the road beating Tulsa Union 34-7. Union is the two-time defending Oklahoma State Champion and ironically, the home of former Warren Central Head Coach Kevin Wright. Union had won 57 straight home games going into that game. Hoover has won 5 of the last 6 Alabama 6A state championships, losing in the championship game in the lone non-winning year. The win over Ben Davis this weekend was impressive, but what was strange to me is Warren Central only threw six passes, completing three. To be able to rack 500+ yards on the ground is impressive, but how balanced are they? Can they play from behind?

Hey DePlod, do you still have those photos in full size, high res? I have been looking for a few good photos of Chicago in high res that I can have made into black & white posters to frame. If you have them, would you consider allowing me to use them for a little personal art?

QUOTE(He_Gawn @ Sep 9, 2006 -> 02:29 PM) Not a misprint. Warren is just that damn good. Id put them up against any team in the country. I'd love to see them play Hoover then. Hoover is an absolute machine. They'll be tested one more time against John Curtis out of Louisiana in a week or two. Aside from that, if they stay focused, I'd say they are on a direct course for a "national championship."

For those of you in Indiana, how in the hell did Warren Central beat Ben Davis 76-7?? Was that a misprint?

Croc Hunter Steve Irwin Dies
QUOTE(Steff @ Sep 6, 2006 -> 09:49 AM) STINGRAY FACTS Marine fish related to the shark Wingspan in different species ranges from 10 inches to 7 feet Barb can be up to 12 inches Lie buried in sand, and normally very shy and non-aggressive Eat worms, mollusks and other invertebrates Possess flexible tails armed, in most species, with saw-edged, venomous spines Uses barb in self-defense when startled, threatened or cornered; venom causes excruciating pain, and serrated barb damages tissue when pulled out; large rays can exert enough force to drive their tail spines into a wooden boat Most stings occur in shallow, coastal waters when swimmers step on a stingray Fatal stings extremely rare, with only 17 recorded stingray deaths in Australia since 1969 If stingrays are near: Shuffle feet in sand to scare stingrays away If stung, soak affected area in extremely hot water to destroy venom Seek medical attention immediately Sources: Encyclopedia Britannica, Georgia Aquarium, infoplease.com, Surf Life Saving Queensland I thought you were supposed to pee on it?? Does that take the place of the hot water?

Croc Hunter Steve Irwin Dies
QUOTE(Texsox @ Sep 5, 2006 -> 07:39 AM) Excellent point Steff. Rule of thumb in First Aid. If you aren't bleeding, leave it in. Get emergency help. Unfortunately, it is usually a reflex and people want it out. Another tip I like, if you need to wash out an eye, if you can drink it, it can go in the eye. So Budweiser or that Bloody Mary can be used to irrigate an eye in an emergency. Of course use water if it's available. Keep in mind that the barb from a sting ray is poisonous, so leaving it in would not have likely made any difference.

Chris Young Called Up
QUOTE(SoxFan101 @ Sep 3, 2006 -> 03:03 AM) Maybe not... or maybe next season he will turn the corner. If he is the same 5 innings and than blow SP next season ill be really dissapointed but I think Vazquez can turn it around next year. That's what teams have been thinking for the last 5-6 years. The reason that trade was a bad one is very simple. Even if Vazquez pitched well, he still was a #5 starter while the team had McCarthy able to step into the rotation. As deep as the Sox starters were, acquiring Vazquez was only going to make a marginal difference. One could argue that adding McCarthy to the rotation and finding bullpen help wold have been the smarter move. Hell, El Duque may have found a role in the bullpen. The bottom line is you don't trade your best prospect, regardless of who it is, for a player that will likely make you only marginally better.

Labor Day Games
It was the final Barons game of the season in the Southern League and the game was very typical, yet unique at the same time. Both teams had a player play all 9 positions, Michael Myers for the Barons and Jeff Eure for the Stars. Myers threw a scoreless 9th and Eure earned the save for the Stars in the bottom half. Meyers went from SS-2B-LF-RF-CF-C-1B-3B-P. Time of game was 1:58 and both teams were hacking and the umpires were calling strikes. Egbert looked good again, but the Barons offense was just trying to get the game over from the 1st inning, so 1-0 was the final. For example, in the bottom of the 8th inning, three Barons hitters saw a total of 6 pitches, swinging at all 6. They included a fould ball, then two consecutive outs followed by three swings and misses. All in all, great weather, a quick game and two players playing all 9 positions kept it interesting.

Hoover, AL whipped Tulsa Union in Friday's Nike HS Game of the Week on FSN. After a scoreless 1st quarter, Hoover scored 34 straight points, eventually toppling the two-time defending Oklahoma state champion 34-7. It also broke Union's 57 game home field winning streak.

Recruiting Thread
QUOTE(whitesoxfan99 @ Sep 2, 2006 -> 11:03 PM) FWIW, having a scrimmage open to the public in which a recruit plays is an NCAA violation. It was just a pick up game, not an organized scrimmage. Allowing the public to walk in and watch guys playing a pick up game would not have been a violation. Coaches would not have been allowed to be present, however.
