QUOTE(greasywheels121 @ Aug 29, 2006 -> 03:05 PM) Where'd you hear this? And for the Gordon information, I'm ignoring that. I have no reason to believe he's not going to Illinois, until I get official news otherwise. Everything is basically hearsay. I agree. I am over Gordon. The whole thing is stupid. All his family has to do is step up to the mike and say the door to IU is closed. He is going to UI. He took a look at IU and while they are grateful for IU and Coach Sampson's interest, Illinois is the where Eric feels is best for him. All they have to do, is have dad stand up and say "It's over! Thanks but no thanks!" Until that happens, rumors will continue to swirl and I will continue to ignore all of it.

QUOTE(Brian @ Aug 27, 2006 -> 12:35 PM) Maine South got rolled by some team from Indiana, 61-12 That would be Warren Central, the three-time defending state champ and Sports Illustrated's #4 ranked team nationally. Indianapolis Cathedral also beat Detroit Renaissance 38-0 yesterday. Not sure if Renaissance is any good, but the margin surprised me.

QUOTE(Brian @ Aug 26, 2006 -> 08:20 PM) I hate national rankings for high school teams. Makes no sense when the top teams in the country don't play each other and it's not like there is a National Title for High School Football. Hoover plays the #12 team in the country in John Curtis and also Union, OK. Union, whose new coach came this year from Indianapolis Warren Central (the #4 team) is considered Oklahoma's 2nd best team. Your point is valid in that there is no tournament or championship, but teams are challenged. I like it because it can simply be a conversation piece.

Aiming for Perfection Here is a story that was recently in Sports Illustrated on Hoover HS, the team featured in the Two-A-Days documentary on MTV. Four publications have them listed as their #1 team in the nation.

I have mixed reactions about IU being on his list.

Two-A-Days
FWIW, a production company paid for the rights to make this documentary in hopes to sell it to a cable network. From the beginning, MTV was the target, but the production was done without a deal from MTV. There was no guarantee it would even air until well after the season.

"Social Experiment" on Survivor.
Is it me or are there a lot of people from LA on that list?

Two-A-Days
QUOTE(Tony82087 @ Aug 23, 2006 -> 07:08 PM) Rex, I have a feeling your going to be REALLY dissapointed. Expect more about the QB dating the star cheerleader than football. Actually I think the coach is an egotistical prick and I am not a fan of the program at all. I respect what they have accomplished, but not how they go about it. They are jokingly referred to Hoovah University around here. I will watch the first episode and that may be my last. I will probably peek in on occasion just to see some football footage, because they are very good. But unless the head cheerleader is REALLY hot, I have no interest in all of that. Who am I kidding, you know damn good and well she is going to be hot. lol

Two-A-Days
Not sure there will be much interest here, but there is a show making its debut on MTV tonight at 9:30 called Two-A-Days. It is a documentary based on Hoover HS's 2005 football season. Hoover High is the 6A team that plays at the Hoover Met. They have won 5 out of the last 6 football state championships in Alabama and play a semi-national schedule. They opened last year playing against Nease, FL which included Tim Tebow. They play at the Met every year after the Barons season ends. If anything, in a few weeks you will probably see some interesting shots of the Met, albeit dressed as a football stadium. This year, Hoover opens the season as the #1 team in the country and plays teams from Tulsa, OK and New Orleans as well as the Alabama defending 4A and 5A state champs.

8/19 Games
Only saw 2 of Egbert's 5.2 innings, but he looked good. Nice live fastball hitting 91-93.

Broadway to Charlotte
QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Aug 19, 2006 -> 09:58 PM) Is this to cover an injury or a true promotion? He's replacing Heath Phillips who is going to play in the US Olypic Qualifying Tournament starting Friday.

Broadway SL Pitcher of Week
Did Broadway just get promoted to Charlotte?

Chris Stewart....
Anything you get with Stewart at the plate is a bonus. He has MLB backup catcher written all over him. He's a quality person with good defensive skills. He's one of the best catch and throw guys I have seen play (not as good as Humberto Quintero, however). Chris's hitting has improved greatly the past 2 years. He'll play once or twice a week, so no need to expect big things from him offensively. The only problem I had with Chris is that he seemed to have too many passed balls. I can't seem to find defensive stats on him, but I think there were times where he lost concentration. I hope he has gotten better in that regard, but that cannot happen in the bigs.

What is wrong with our scouts???
Some of this has been mentioned, but here goes anyway.... The Sox have gone to drafting more pitchers than throwers in recent years because the former was not working well. Guys like Brian West, Wyatt Allen, Jason Stumm, Dan Wright, Rob Purvis, and Kris Honel never panned out for one reason or another. Sometimes you draft what works best for you. Other times you see what other teams are trending towards and do the opposite to get more value.

Heath Phillups
Heath's biggest strength is the fact he is left-handed. His biggest problem is, he has had the need to repeat levels. He had to repeat High A in 2003. While his numbers weren't great at Birmingham in 2004, he was a solid innings-eating pitcher and was impressive in how he competed and kept his team in games. Unfortunately, he really struggled last year at AAA and was sent back to Birmingham. Heath could either be one of those late blooming types who gets better as he gets older and finds a niche in the big leagues for a few years or a guy who sits in the minors until he retires. Heath knows how to pitch. He's got pretty good command (likely getting better based on what he has done this year) and has an excellent changeup. My recommendation is to look at Heath this way. Whatever you get out of him in the Majors is a bonus. Don't expect much despite his success this year, and if he makes it, enjoy the surprise.

Mortgage Help
A couple of random thoughts after reading this thread: 1. The rates being quoted here seem awfully high. Obviously, credit ratings/history will have an affect, but the average rate in Illinois for a 30-yr fixed mortgage today was 6.08%. It was 6.14 here in the Birmingham area. 2. The difference between the fixed rate and ARM's just isn't that great anymore. Compare the above 6.08 to 5.82 for a 5/1 ARM or 5.66 on a 3/1 ARM. Interest only ARM's for the same periods were slightly higher. When I bought my first house, fixed rates were around 6% and I got a 3/1ARM for 4.625%. To me that was a big enough difference in a starter home to go with the ARM. I can't see myself doing an ARM while saving less than 1/2%. To me that is not enough of a difference to take on that risk. No one ever knows what will happen in the future. The housing market could go bust. One could lose a job, or take a new job earning less. Divorce is possible. Disability could happen. What if life changes enough to make you need to stay in the "starter" house for 10 years instead of the planned 3-5? One common mistake young people make is they assume they will always make more money and will always be moving up in the world so to speak. Real life shows us that is not always the case. I did the ARM once and chose to go fixed the 2nd time. I would have done the ARM again in a heartbeat if the reward were worth the risk. I just don't see that being the case with the rates so close.

2006 MLB Catch-All Thread
QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Aug 13, 2006 -> 08:46 PM) Man, I think you just have to wonder what sort of numbers Maddux would have put up this season if he hadn't spent 2/3 of the year on a minor league team. Maddux was vintage Maddux tonight. Only 68 pitches in 8 innings, retiring 22 straight after the first inning. It was a pleasure to watch.

QUOTE(Brian @ Aug 13, 2006 -> 01:03 PM) Is it wrong that the one thing I'm looking forward to the most the football season, college and pro, is to see games in HD. Never seen a football game in HD. dude, c'mon over let's drink a beer and watch some football!!! FWIW, the CBS SEC game on Saturday afternoon looks the best. CBS broadcasts in 1080i, as does NBC, but their picture is far superior. ABC and ESPN broadcast in 720p which is slightly lower resolution, but arguably better for pictures with heavy motion such as sports. ESPN's picture looks great as well, but take the time to catch the CBS game and you will see what I mean.
