QUOTE(JoeCoolMan24 @ Mar 19, 2008 -> 02:59 PM) So does this now take our roster to 38? Now we trade for Brian Roberts and some craptastic reliever on the O's? Maybe. The only bullets we have to trade is Josh Fields and Carlos Quentin IMO. Im really hoping we dont see a Roberts+Sherrill for whats left of our young talent.

QUOTE(whitesoxfan101 @ Mar 19, 2008 -> 02:58 PM) Because Kenny Williams is your gm. That's 9.5 million dollars now on Crede and Uribe for this year alone, we DFA'd one within four months, and we can't beg anybody to trade for the other. Now that is excellence in management right there. On a side note, hopefully this means they think Ramirez is ready to roll, and hopefully if so they are right. Its not our money.

What sports forum makes you a smarter sports fan?
RockRaines replied to shipps's topic in Alex’s Olde Tyme Sports Pub
Sports radio and TV is so biased and usually so based on opinions instead of facts I think it makes the average sports fan more ignorant. Soxtalk and other message boards have generally good posters who look outside their bias and focus on some of the finer things in sports. -
The O's want him, they can have him A-ram is now our starting 2B with Richar as backup plan. This is of course if we didnt trade for Brian Roberts.
-
Man, if only people outside of Sox fans could see how much as a fanbase we overrate Joe Crede. Im not sure theres any fan of another team that would trade their 3B for Crede.

QUOTE(iamshack @ Mar 19, 2008 -> 01:11 PM) Well, I like Fields. I think he has some major power potential, and I think he has the athletic ability to continue to improve defensively at 3b. But I don't believe he is such a complete hitter at this point that he has nothing to gain by getting ab's in Charlotte, or that his progress will somehow be "stunted." For all those that rip Jerry Owens' statsheet apart last year because of his September success, take a look at Josh Fields' August and September. What would be the benefit of him getting at bats against inferior competition vs getting at bats and continuing to improve in the majors where he belongs? He's already as good as Crede has been offensively, if not better, why make him take a step back in AAA? That makes zero sense. AAA isnt the magical land of baseball learning, he has nothing left to prove in the minors.

QUOTE(lvjeremylv @ Mar 19, 2008 -> 01:05 PM) You mean the season he had in which he struck out 125 times in 373 AB? A rookie who strikes out 33% of the time needs more seasoning in AAA. Sure he hit 23 home runs, but that doesn't come close to canceling out all those strikeouts. And it's not like he put up a .400 OBP - it was .308, and he offers no speed. Granted, Crede's OBP and speed are also not up to par, but you're acting like Fields had a season like Tulowitzki or Braun. The fact is he's a free swinger who needs more work to cut down his swing and get those whiffs to an acceptable level. Not to mention that his glovework at 3B is not where Joe's is. Our 3-5 in the rotation are going to need all the help they can get in the field, and having Joe at 3B bodes better for them than Josh. Crede puts the bat on the ball and is one of the best defensive 3B in the league. Fields OPS by month June .607 July .823 Aug .773 Sept .936 SLG by month .333 .490 .509 .568 He's improving with time, produced better than Crede offensively already and is in spring training as well. He's a better player for the Sox, hands down.

QUOTE(iamshack @ Mar 19, 2008 -> 12:53 PM) Ok, so I just wasted several minutes of my life reading through this entire s***storm. This thread is like every negative poster on Soxtalk's wet dream. Why is it that some people actually enjoy when the organization does something they disagree with so they have a chance to tell everyone else how much smarter they are than the general manager? As much as all the pro-Fields people want to poke fun at "Crede's Crew," and facetiously compare Joe to Brooks Robinson, one would think Josh Fields was David Wright or Ryan Braun. The world will not end if Josh has to go to Charlotte for a few hundred ab's, guys. Just like the world will not end if Joe is traded to SF or LAD. But wow, why do some of you even watch the team or read the newspaper if it makes you so damned miserable? Some of you are incredibly-gifted whiners. It comes down to for the White Sox Josh Fields>Joe Crede. No whining needed. The only positive is that KW at least is waiting for some value for Crede, thats if Crede ever hits the ball.

QUOTE(Palehosefan @ Mar 19, 2008 -> 12:01 PM) Pryor has to keep his attitude in check first. If he does, he's a hell of a player. He should already see some playing time next season in the Tebow mold. 6-6 running a sub 4.3 is something to behold. -
What qualities do you look for in a gym/fitness center?
RockRaines replied to shipps's topic in SLaM
QUOTE(StrangeSox @ Mar 19, 2008 -> 07:41 AM) Anyone know of a good gym with a pool in the Woodridge/ Downers Grove area? I'd love to start swimming, and the HS only has one night of lap swimming a week. Isnt there one by ogden and belmont? Didnt they build a new rec center with a pool. If not I would check into the health center at Good Sam or the one by seven bridges. -
QUOTE(SoxWS05 @ Mar 19, 2008 -> 12:07 PM) If he comes in and proves himself healthy, I would give him 4 years 30 million. That's 7.5 per year. Good deal on both sides. Thats an awful deal, he's not really worth his 5 million this year. His benchmark is about what Pedro Feliz got at 3 years 8.5 million. Feliz is superior defensively and about as good as Crede offensively.

QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Mar 19, 2008 -> 11:45 AM) According to Harball Times's win shares calculation, he accounted for 12 WS's last year. Crede was at 20 in 2006 and 14 in 2005 (playing full seasons). but but but, intangibles, things not on paper or stats, grinderisms.........

QUOTE(whitesoxfan101 @ Mar 19, 2008 -> 11:46 AM) Who the hell delays a college choice so fans of another college won't root against them in a high school tournament? A smart one who cares about his team winning. He had zero plans to visit any other schools and his announcement now got less attention that anything on signing day. -
QUOTE(SoxWS05 @ Mar 19, 2008 -> 11:41 AM) Yeah I remember when Fields hit 30HR and 90RBI's in '06...Ohhh wait that was Crede...Fields and his 125 K's in 400AB's helped the Sox win a lot of games in '07. SO, you are banking on Crede performing as he did in an outlier year? Hmmm, math, statistics, common sense, out the door. I DO recall Joe Crede's .252 .303 2005 and his .239 .299 in 2004, maybe I should remember his .259 .305 career numbers? Josh's rookie "full time campaign" in 373 ab's put up basically the same numbers as Crede has his whole career, while slugging better and hitting HR's at a better rate. oh and he showed he can walk at a higher rate too.

QUOTE(whitesoxfan101 @ Mar 19, 2008 -> 11:41 AM) Well that would be smart if he had actually been considering anybody other than Ohio State. I remember reading that he visited Penn State because his Dad wanted him to and his Dad is sick or something? Anyways, I guess it was nice of him to listen to Dad's point of view, but he was going to Ohio State since about February 1st. Yeah, but he made sure the fans at PSU didnt root against his team when he was in the playoffs because he left them an option, get it? Smart move. There werent too many OSU fans that thought he was going there, but we sure did think DickRod may sneak in and take him like he did with a few other teams almost commits. -

QUOTE(whitesoxfan101 @ Mar 19, 2008 -> 11:36 AM) What a waste of everybody's time, it's been clear since a week before signing day that he was going to Ohio State. Not that Buckeye fans care of course, better late than never getting a guy that talented. Is he going to play basketball and football is my first question. He better be REALLY good with all the drama he's had in this process. He was actually smart since alot of his playoff bball games were played in State College PA where PSU was the home state fav to land him. He walked away with the bball state title and committed to his best option. And he'll only play football. -
QUOTE(SoxWS05 @ Mar 19, 2008 -> 11:37 AM) But Joe Crede is not a rookie anymore, it's 2008 now. Fields can learn how to play 3B in Charlotte. Yes, but where can Crede learn to hit?
-
QUOTE(SoxWS05 @ Mar 19, 2008 -> 10:02 AM) It's not bobbles and overthrows, it's turning the tough DP or laying out to make the play down the line. Those are the intangibles that don't show up in the stat book but change the outcome of a game/season. Grinderish intangibles? Crede's bat will lose you more games than Fields defense.

QUOTE(SoxWS05 @ Mar 19, 2008 -> 09:39 AM) I still haven't read one valid statement on why Crede SHOULDN'T be the Sox starting third baseman. Yeah Fields hit 23HR last season, but the team was out of contention and all he did was take HR swings every AB. Fields also struck out twice a game and has trouble turning a double play. Crede is a top 5 defensive 3B is all of MLB, like someone stated earlier our pitchers need all the help they can get behind them and Fields makes our pitchers worse. I would say they're close to equal at the plate, but still give Crede the edge. Fields has yet to play a full season. Crede's last full season was .280 30HR 90RBI. Granted that was the best year of his career but no reason to believe he won't hit 25HR and 80RBI this season. Fields should go down the charlotte and work on his defense because he is one of the worst defensive 3b in all of MLB. Face it, if Crede is still here come opening day he will be the starter and he should be. Crede will help the Sox win more games then Fields in 2008. I don't know why everyone overrates fields so much. Kind of like how you overrated Crede there?

More Speculation About the Starting CF Job
RockRaines replied to JohnCangelosi's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE(Vance Law @ Mar 18, 2008 -> 05:35 PM) I doubt I buy this. If they can put Bourgeois in CF he's certainly better out there. You'd never see Ozuna there. Thats fine, but I didnt pull that opinion out of thin air. He's just not very good at any position in the field. And I wouldnt put O-Cab in CF either, but he's clearly a superior fielder to Bourgeois. -

QUOTE(NorthSideSox72 @ Mar 18, 2008 -> 04:47 PM) Wassermann has done well against a few lefties this spring, actually. He developed a change up specifically for that purpose. I don't know his stats for that situation in ST though - I can't find a sortable version of ST stats that includes those numbers. Yeah but thats one pitch, his success rate against Righties is so much higher. .174 BA vs .533 11.57 ERA vs 1.74 . He didnt pitch many innings against lefties, but still, hes situational, and thats ok. -

QUOTE(daa84 @ Mar 18, 2008 -> 04:40 PM) i think jon danks is going to have a pretty decent major league career when its all said and done...similar to garland Honestly I think a little better cause his K rate seems very good. He's more of a strikeout pitcher IMO, and when he learns to hit bats and make ground balls, he should excel.
