QUOTE(NorthSideSox72 @ Sep 7, 2007 -> 10:59 AM) Ever? That's a stretch. They occasionally dive for bunts or pop flys, sometimes even really bad pitches. Or dive to make tags. Certainly its not often, but it happens. And there is not much question that playing catcher is far more risky for injury than 1B. I wonder what has the higher chance of injury, squatting behind the plate while catching 90+ mph fastballs and the occasional foul tip for numerous innings, and sometimes getting run over by a player trying to score, or playing an inning or two at 1B? Hmmmmmm

Well Hall not only cant throw, but he cant hit or call ballgames. I wonder if ALL of that is because he injured HIMSELF in spring training.

QUOTE(shoota @ Sep 6, 2007 -> 07:17 PM) Before getting into names of managers better than Guillen, you can agree with the philosophy of replacing an inferior manager with a superior one, correct? And that would be............... Every manager in the game has someone better than him except for one. Thanks for the lesson though.

QUOTE(Brian @ Sep 6, 2007 -> 04:39 PM) Henne is not that bad. He is at least mobile and won't just stand there and get sacked without fighting a bit. Well, actually Navarre is statistically superior than Henne at this point isnt he? And Henne is a 4 year starter whilst Navarre was only a starter for 3 years. "For his career, Henne has completed 666 of 1,109 passes for 7,777 yards, 70 touchdowns, and 28 interceptions.[1] He ranks second only to John Navarre in Michigan annals for attempts, completions, and yards." "Navarre holds several Michigan career records including passing yards (9,254), passing touchdowns (72), pass attempts (1,366), and completions (765)." (as a three year starter) -
QUOTE(shoota @ Sep 6, 2007 -> 04:51 PM) The question shouldn't be asking what man could have lead this Sox roster to great success, but if Guillen is the best manager in the game. The answer is no. Solution: Don't extend the contract of a man of inferior managing abilites, and hire one better. And that person would be............

QUOTE(Brian @ Sep 6, 2007 -> 02:19 PM) Henne is what he is. Not gonna win games for you. Ryan Mallet is waiting in the wings. He is John Navarre part 2 -
why is this not on tv?

Gavin actually had better pitches last night than I have seen. He showed a power sinker that I hadnt seen before, and his little slider looked to fool a couple of hitters. His change needs work as he drops his arm a bit when he throws it, otherwise he has the potential to be able to replace Jon Garland in our rotation if he keeps this up.

QUOTE(NorthSideSox72 @ Sep 6, 2007 -> 10:01 AM) Add Gallagher and Miranda to the 2007 draft picks who made very good showings this year too. Seems like we maybe got a few winners this time around. If the guy's name was Salvador Sanchez and he hailed from the Dominican Republic, people on here would be calling him Liriano 2.

Henne is never good. I dont understand why Michigan fans are still waiting for this dominant year from him. He is flat out not that great. -
Just thought I would throw this blurb in here about our top "reach" draft pick last year. Aaron Poreda, LHP, Chicago White Sox (No. 25) Aaron Poreda tagged his contract offer presented by the White Sox on June 16, and he has been untouchable ever since. A 6-foot-6, 240-pounder who pitches as big as his size, Poreda has posted an equally imposing 48:10 K to BB rate in his 46.1 frames of work. The University of San Francisco product features a blazing arsenal, which has yielded a 0.85 WHIP and .181 BAA. Pair those results with a stunning 68% groundball rate and Aaron Poreda has been just about as dominant a prospect as the 2007 class has produced to date.

QUOTE(3 BeWareTheNewSox 5 @ Sep 6, 2007 -> 01:43 AM) No data plan charges or monthly subscription Good for me in class since the school has wifi, I don't want to lug around my laptop, and I can keep track of games since I have a lot of night classes But fock Apple, I am plenty happy with TMobile Dash (yes, also with Wifi ), I would probably get annoyed with a touch screen anyways Ah ok. For students it makes alot of sense, I had my old man brain on for a second. For me it just doesnt give me a whole lot of benefit with a blackberry that does the internet all the time.

How about Abreu for LF next year?

QUOTE(SEALgep @ Sep 5, 2007 -> 08:06 PM) Can't trade the pick, but you could always pick someone safe as the Sox have done in recent history. The Sox appear to start being more aggressive as far as the player is concerned, high risk / high ceiling, but with a top pick coming, its nice because they may get lucky enough to pick a player with significantly lower risk / still high ceiling. I've heard some names around, but anyone have a current top 5? The #1 pick is a pretty safe pick anyway. The odds are very good that he will contribute on the mlb team at some point.

Gavin lets go of a couple of curves instead of hanging them and I am happy. He has looked pretty good tonight.

QUOTE(DrunkBomber @ Sep 5, 2007 -> 04:00 PM) I want one just for the wifi capabilities. I dont understand the draw of that. I mean, you have to go into a coffee shop, and then can surf the web on your ipod? Is that a huge benefit for some people. I have a treo that surfs the web everywhere on the EV-Do network, is this really that different from what this ipod will be able to do only in hotspots?

QUOTE(southsideirish71 @ Sep 5, 2007 -> 02:22 PM) Actually I am disappointed. The IPOD Touch was the model I was really looking forward to, and then find out its only 16gig. I understand that they went for real thin and used flash in that model, but why would you create a wide screen ipod meant for video and only have 16gigs of space. It doesnt make any sense because I believe that the flash mem could go up to 30 gigs. But i guess they wanted to save the size of the device. Either way im sticking with the 160 gig IPOD classic, the touch screen doesnt interest me.

www.apple.com Check out the ipod touch which is basically just an iphone without the phone. The IPOD classic is now only available as an 80 gig or 160 gig piece of machine. The IPOD nano is totally redesigned.

QUOTE(Kalapse @ Sep 5, 2007 -> 11:13 AM) Based on his HR numbers from this season, Josh Fields would hit about 33 HR in a 600 PA season and 35 in a 650 PA season. If he batted 5th or 6th for at least 155 games next year he'd probably finish with about 610 PA. So based on this year's numbers I'd project him to hit about 34 HR. Correct, but I was also assuming some sort of improvement over his rookie campaign, especially with his increase numbers with each month that he plays. He has increased his HR rate since he was brought up quite steadily. I would say 30 hr is a lock. 40 hr is realistic.
-
QUOTE(max power @ Sep 5, 2007 -> 10:00 AM) Are you kidding or something? "At least 40 HR" seems like you are exaggerating. He'll probably hit like thirty some HRs. RBIs is about right. Well. He has about 18hr in about a half a season worth of at bats. I am assuming he continues the pace and reaches about 40 hr with another season under his belt and a full season of work.
-
Dont forget that just by adding Josh Fields into the opening day lineup adds at least 40hr's worth of power that we didnt have at the beginning of last season. You are basically taking the LF spot and adding 40 hr's and at least 70-80 rbi's

QUOTE(IlliniKrush @ Sep 4, 2007 -> 06:48 PM) You sure want it both ways, don't you? Bad record, GM/players fault all the way. Good record, WS, totally the manager. How about evaluating him based on more than a record? In game moves, handling of players, lineups, bullpens, etc. This broad stuff is such bulls***, I'm so sick of the ring argument. He has had a terrible year along with everyone else, he is not the flower in a bed of weeds. Thanks for backing me. I actually was using his overall record all along. Which is why I said he should have an extension.

QUOTE(michelangelosmonkey @ Sep 4, 2007 -> 04:26 PM) My point is you can't cherry pick. Chipper Jones...superstar. Arod...superstar. Junior...Superstar. Three .900 OPS guys in 40 years. Then some guys. Sure 3 is good...but its no sure thing. I cant remember what thread it was in, but someone posted that the #1 pick is something like 30 percent more effective for selecting an impact MLB player that the 2nd pick. I wish I could find that post. -

RockRaines replied to greg775's topic in Pale Hose Talk
Josh Hamilton is one of the front runners for NL ROY. I would say he was a good, but very sidetracked pick. Delmon Young is looking to be a pretty good player, and I would gladly take a player like him. Most importantly, which you missed in your post, is that the #1 pick is much more frequently an impact player over the rest of the top 5 and top 10 picks.
