  1. QUOTE(THEWOOD @ Feb 19, 2007 -> 12:35 PM) Wisconsin gets the nod in the AP poll in a very close margin. The voting really is a mute point since whoever wins sunday will get be 1 I dont think that OSU deserves the #1 ranking until they beat someone thats not in the big ten, or beat Wisco. With that said, if anyone watched OSU play this weekend, if Greg Oden continues to hit those right and left handed jump hooks, there really isnt a team they cant beat. Also interesting note on Oden they mentioned in the game. Since the first few games shooting FT's left handed, they said he has shot at about a 75 percent rate with his off hand. If that is true, that is ridiculous and should make players like Ben Wallce et al. feel incredibly piss poor.
  2. Its interesting that this isnt the first note where Gio is being praised by ozzie and memebers of the staff. I know Ozzie said that he didnt know Gio's fastball was that good.
  3. QUOTE(Whitewashed in @ Feb 19, 2007 -> 12:57 PM) Wow. I didn't hear about that. That was really really cool of him. Ditto to what you said. Yeah it was a piece on comcast last night. Danks, Masset, and Floyd I believe went with. But I know they interviewed Danks and Garland and they talked about it. I really like Danks after hearing him talk in the interviews. He seems like he has a good head on his shoulders.
  4. QUOTE(Rex Kicka** @ Feb 19, 2007 -> 11:35 AM) It will probably be XM. It has the stronger brand recognition. I would argue that although Howard might have brought about a million people to Sirius, the bulk of the new subscriptions had more to do with the growing availability of Sirius in new cars than anything else. Not only that but XM is a just a better name period. I wonder if they are going to sell new receivers, also for people who have sat radio just for sports like I do, this really is an awesome thing. Now its not just MLB and big ten for me, I can listen to everything. This seems like an anti trust thing though.
  5. QUOTE(Tony82087 @ Feb 19, 2007 -> 10:41 AM) Little OT, but did anyone see the piece they had on SportsNite last night with Danks-Masset-Sisco-Haeger-Floyd? That was really the 1st time I had heard any of them in an interview, and it was sort of odd to see all the new faces.... Yeah, and I was completely blown away by their story about Garland taking them golfing so that they could feel more comfortable with the team and so they could pick his brain about the majors. Jon shows some serious leadership right there.
  6. Cool, I just hadnt seen enough of either team to determine if they had the height to play against bigger teams.
  7. First of all, a 7 footer in the dunk contest is stupid. Second, im still waiting for the Chandler is a star argument.
  8. QUOTE(Rowand44 @ Feb 17, 2007 -> 07:40 PM) Ya, both teams are small. Our bigs are strong and athletic though and they can keep up with bigger bigs because of that, but height wise we're definitely limited. Kjust checking. Does it make you nervous to go against teams in the big ten who have 7 footers who can basically dominate the paint. I mean, it seemed to me like the thing missing in that game was a post player game, as good as SIU appears to be in that conference, I would really wonder what they would do against a Wisco, or an OSU with the height they will have in the tourney.
  9. now i havent seen much of SIU or Butler, but are both teams small or was it just the angle?
  10. QUOTE(Flash Tizzle @ Feb 16, 2007 -> 11:12 PM) Ha, I can completely relate. Wish I had a camera right now to showcase my three year old retro Sox hat. It endured piss, alcohol, cigarette butts, dirt, grime, and sweat over it's liftetime. I literally had to stop wearing it because it was giving me rashes on the back of my scalp. Not to mention it had an odd odor. Lysol could only do so much. I considering washing it, but another hat I had previously was never the same after a rinse cycle. Introduce that hat to the dishwasher
  11. QUOTE(Dick Allen @ Feb 16, 2007 -> 09:27 PM) FWIW, Gammons on his blog on ESPN.com polled 70 front office people on who would be the biggest breakout player in 2007. The number 1 pick, Brandon McCarthy, with a little Jack McDowell II reference. It could be true, if Jack gave up a ridiculous amount of gopherballs
  12. QUOTE(IlliniKrush @ Feb 17, 2007 -> 02:03 AM) Not really. Far, far from a mascot in today's college world. A mascot is like Purdue Pete or Sparty who runs around the sideline high fiving fans, leading cheers, going nuts on camera, and doing stunts with students and cheerldears alike. You can hate the Chief all you want, but to use that definition is terrible. Thats exactly the definition that the only descendants of the Illini tribe use to describe the horrible activities of "Chief Illiniwek." They never wanted it as a mascot, and you university ignored their requests for too long
  13. QUOTE(hammerhead johnson @ Feb 16, 2007 -> 01:36 PM) You and Sleepy both completely missed the point. Check the post that I was responding to. If this was baseball, you'd be telling me that pitching and defense rules all. I don't know how basketball would be any different from a philosophical standpoint. I don't know why I torture myself. I'll step away from the computer now. You cant compare baseball and basketball man, come on. Pitching and defense being the same as rebounding? And I didnt miss any point, i was clarifying what you were trying to say by bringing up Bill Russell. Of course he would be a max contract player, hes one of the best ever. He revolutionized the game for god sakes. Please explain to me how Tyson Chandler is more than a role player. Because thats all im saying here. He isnt a great player, but he is a top of the line rebounder and adds some defensive presence. Past that, he lacks in talent to be a good handler of the ball and lacks the ideal hands to be a post scorer. But that doesnt mean he cant be a great piece to a championship puzzle, but that piece is a role in a team, nothing more.
  14. QUOTE(whitesoxfan101 @ Feb 16, 2007 -> 01:31 PM) I have no clue, I just know that is why FSU got to keep their mascot. Maybe they offered more money than Illinois, lol. Its not about money, because they both have the ability to "bribe" if needed. FSU has integrated their efforts to keep the name Seminoles with the local tribes, and have given them equal say to changes and the removal of anything that may seem racist or wrong. In addition they have worked with the tribe to assure that the symbols pay tribute to the tribe and the reputation of the nation. In addition the outfit and items used by their "mascot" are authentic Seminole garb and is hand made in several occassions by members of the tribe. Here is some more on the subject and how they have worked together for years. http://www.fsu.com/media/2005/08/30/Semino...0Traditions.pdf Chief Illiniwek didnt even wear an outfit that was worn by that tribe, infact he is wearing a Sioux outfit, and doing a dance choreographed by the Boy Scouts. Also the tribe has been largely ignored by the University in its efforts to change certain things about the Chief especially in recent years. There is a history of conflict, especially in the present in this issue, whic FSU has had a history of compliance and partnership.
  15. QUOTE(CanOfCorn @ Feb 16, 2007 -> 01:29 PM) I believe the Peoria has about-faced on this topic in recent years. Yes in 1995 they had one position then they changed it. So their position for the last 7 years has been against the mascot. Their repeated requests to the university were ignored, which is why we are at where we are now.
  16. I sure hope that the comparison wasnt being made between Chandler and Bill Russell. Please tell me that wasnt the case, because that would be ridiculous.
  17. QUOTE(hammerhead johnson @ Feb 16, 2007 -> 12:53 PM) Basketball is a team game. Basketball is a team game. Basketball is a team game. It will soak in eventually. Yes it is, and he is a good role player. Not a star, but a good role player. He can be valuable to a team that already has offensive talent and scorers, because Tyson is neither.
  18. QUOTE(whitesoxfan101 @ Feb 16, 2007 -> 01:06 PM) The FSU controversy had to do with the seminole tribes of Oklahoma objecting to the mascot actually. The seminole tribe of Florida had been paid off long, long ago to go along with it, and after FSU paid off the Oklahoma tribe, they shut up too. Unfortunately, there aren't very many living members of anything that resembles the Illini tribe left, so that option isn't available to Illinois. How so? The Peoria Tribe of Oklahoma is the last remaining descendants of the Illini. They were also one of the main voices of opposition of the chief. They couldnt be paid off in your opinion? What makes the Seminole tribe so much easier to pay off than the descendants of the illini? One way to investigate this is to look at why the Peoria tribe actually dislikes the Chief, and why the Seminole tribes do not feel that way about FSU.
  19. Jesus, here come the Tyson Chandler for MVP talks. I mean hes so good he has pulled his team right into a sub-.500 record.
  20. QUOTE(Buehrle>Wood @ Feb 16, 2007 -> 12:20 PM) I don't believe so. In fact, I think some even expressed their opinion in keeping the chief. Wrong. The closest decendants of the Illini are the Peoria Tribe.
  21. QUOTE(southsideirish71 @ Feb 16, 2007 -> 10:55 AM) Over striding also has one other side effect, you have a propensity to leave the ball up more. You can lose some control and have more side to side break on the ball other than over the top. I believe that Gavin had the same overstriding problem as did Thorton.
  22. QUOTE(SnB @ Feb 16, 2007 -> 11:14 AM) The dance wasn't racist. Apparently members of that actual race dont agree with you.
  23. QUOTE(thedoctor @ Feb 16, 2007 -> 09:40 AM) in five years i will however remember the sight of two arizona state co-eds tongue kissing at a football game. that's been indelibly burned into my psyche. Well, thats just the wonder of girl on girl action. It never dies, it multiplies....or something like that.
  24. Its about time that racist figurehead doing gymnastics is let go. In 5 years, the students at Illinois wont even know or remember that at halftime some white guy did a made up dance in a costume.
