Tigers extend Cabrera 10 years, $300 million
RockRaines replied to Balta1701's topic in The Diamond Club
Crippling move by the Tigers. Good for the White Sox. -
QUOTE (flavum @ Mar 27, 2014 -> 04:22 PM) I like how they have to pretend Nate Jones isn't the closer, or that they're still thinking about it. Webb will be closing by June.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Mar 27, 2014 -> 04:25 PM) After having lived through the Reggie Miller era, I just can't do it. f*** the Pacers. They havent really had anyone likeable in my lifetime.

QUOTE (bmags @ Mar 27, 2014 -> 03:20 PM) So it's March 27th and we already hate half the players? Ive hated Flowers for awhile.
-
QUOTE (raBBit @ Mar 27, 2014 -> 02:56 PM) Don't understand this comp. I think Paulina has better natural stuff and Garland was consistent and full of efficient innings. Don't seem similar to me at all. In frustration level.

QUOTE (SoxPride18 @ Mar 27, 2014 -> 02:46 PM) I already know I'm not going to like him Jon Garland 2.0 IMO.

QUOTE (The Ginger Kid @ Mar 27, 2014 -> 02:16 PM) flowers is so s***ty He's horrible. I hate him as the starting catcher.

QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Mar 27, 2014 -> 01:07 PM) What about the fact that Hibbert jumped into him while he was in the air and outside the restricted zone and initiated contact? Ugh, so over the blind Heat/LeBron hate here. So much so that you fools are pro-Indiana for f***'s sake. Hibbert jumped but he jumped straight up, thats allowed now.

QUOTE (whitesoxfan99 @ Mar 27, 2014 -> 12:14 PM) AJ Hammons going pro. Purdue may be the 2nd worst team in the Big 10 next year ahead of only Rutgers. Thank God, he killed us. -
QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Mar 27, 2014 -> 09:55 AM) And that's how every business in the world works. Why should student athletes get special treatment? Well, it depends. Some people would call that a sweat shop model since the players really arent getting paid what could be called the minimum rate if you take into account the education is just training and not actual compensation. Personally I think this whole thing is bulls***. One of their main points were having athletes who get hurt or leave be able to finish their education, well I know in public schools like OSU they can come back and finish for FREE at any time. Second they were concerned about medical treatment, these guys get 1000% better medical attention than the common college kid. Third, they DO get a stipend that is quite generous. Many of these kids blow it on stuff they shouldnt be using it for and have nothing left and call poor. They want to go out and "buy food", well their meals are 100% paid for by the school if you eat where you should be eating. I understand some kids are poorer than others and need extra cash, the easiest thing would be treat them like you would for financial aid and be able to give those hardship cases an additional sum. Becoming "employees" is the WORST thing they can do IMO. Now you open up tax issues and insurance issues that I dont think they thought about.

QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Mar 27, 2014 -> 09:50 AM) The Ohio State AD just earned an $18k bonus because one wrestler won a national championship. That's the kind of stuff that needs to change. Either give the kid something or put it back into the non revenue sport. Don't put it in the pocket of the guy who already makes $18k per week. Administrators don't want to pay players, because it will come out of their pocket. (Not picking on OSU Rock, that was just in the news, it happens everywhere) It's pretty commonplace so its not picking on anyone. AD's get bonuses when sports win national titles, so do coaches, support staff etc. Everyone gets a performance bonus except for the kids that perform.

QUOTE (dasox24 @ Mar 26, 2014 -> 08:16 PM) I remember watching that game because I wanted to see if the hype about Mack was real, and I came away very impressed. I'm became a big fan of his after that. He ran AWAY from Braxton Miller and Dontre Wilson after a pick. That's some serious speed. -
QUOTE (bmags @ Mar 27, 2014 -> 09:35 AM) I'm not really swayed by your arguments, but I did think the reason this would fall is the conclusion of whether any scholarship is a form of employment. But I actually think you can split that. I think the last line is completely irrelevant. Students on full academic scholarship get 61k in scholarships, work-study programs and an awesome education without the expectation of traveling all over the country, staying over breaks, mandatory team meetings, twoaday practices, charity work, media interviews, mandatory workouts, etc. The student athlete's obligations seem to me to be dictated by their athletic work. That they have minimum standards applied to being a student doesn't really matter to me. As for this just going through because it's an Obama stacked board, LOL. I doubt he's even been able to appoint anyone. But when an organization becomes a billion dollar revenue company largely through the free labor of amateur athletes while paying themselves lavishly, the shoe is gonna drop at some point. Athletes add about 40 hours a week of full time activities related to their sport. Thats quite a bit of time. Basketball as well adds so much travel time.

QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Mar 26, 2014 -> 09:20 PM) Roy Hibbert just got TKO'd. Total jello legs.

Wow.

You could call Lebron for an offensive foul every single possession.

QUOTE (TheTruth05 @ Mar 26, 2014 -> 02:54 PM) What a tease. It's pretty feasible that Semien takes the spot while Bacon is out rehabbing. The org has thought about the transition.

QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Mar 26, 2014 -> 04:40 PM) Hahaha. I watched some film of Mack and said "Sweet, this is the one defender I could really get behind for the Bills, and he's a hometown kid to boot!" Yeah, too bad he's probably going like 6 picks ahead of them. Sammy Watkins is an absolute stud and the clear #1 receiver in this draft, and the Rams could really, really use, but there's no way they can stay at 2, is there? You are going to have 4 out of Clowney, Watkins, Mack, Robinson, and Bortles will be available. Some team is going to give them two 1st rounders plus a 2nd, right? Mack is awesome, he dominated the entire OSU team. -
QUOTE (Athomeboy_2000 @ Mar 26, 2014 -> 02:42 PM) The workaround for college programs... Convert the scholarships into a cash payment of the same amount. They now pay taxes and if they dont pay tuition because they used it on beer and other non-essentials.... they get kicked out. Once again, only private schools.

QUOTE (BigHurt3515 @ Mar 26, 2014 -> 01:08 PM) Was hoping Beckham was gone. That could still be reality.
-
QUOTE (Bigsoxhurt35 @ Mar 26, 2014 -> 02:24 PM) @scottmerkin: Beckham and Keppinger to DL to start season. Semien starting at second. L Garcia utility. No closer yet. This was known a week or more ago. In wouldn't be surprised to see Keppinger gone before he plays a game for the White Sox.
-
QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Mar 26, 2014 -> 01:51 PM) Wow, I'm legitimately surprised by that. I thought it was a long shot at best. It still doesn't apply to public schools.

Take that Packers. -
QUOTE (ZoomSlowik @ Mar 25, 2014 -> 02:20 PM) Meh. It's not going to make a major difference for most of the guys the rule will affect. I don't see Julius Randle or Jabari Parker gaining much against guys they outclass and facing a ton of zones and junk defenses for teams to try to close the talent gap. Plus it seems like nearly every top prospect that comes back stagnates and has their stock drop (Smart, Sullinger, Noah, Barnes, sorta Zeller before Charlotte reached for him off the top of my head), and if you get hurt like Noel or McGary you're in trouble. We've seen plenty of young guys come in and be productive, and even a lot of the ones that didn't still had productive careers. I think getting the high schoolers out of the draft was good, but I don't see the pressing need to up it another year. A few of those players had their draft stock drop but it didn't make them less productive in the NBa, it just made them less "hot."

QUOTE (IlliniKrush @ Mar 25, 2014 -> 10:06 AM) I get it, but you could do the same thing in white. And white outs are bad ass, hat tip Winnipeg. Too much Penn State for me.
