QUOTE (fathom @ Jan 25, 2010 -> 08:47 PM) That's after saying he'd start 1-2 times a week. Mark Kotsay is officially the new Timo Perez. just thought it was funny, like saying we dont want you or want you right now but hey if all goes wrong,we'll give you a call lol

Guillen said the Sox haven't ruled out bringing back Thome if they have a need for a left-hander power hitter later this season if he's available.

QUOTE (Flash Tizzle @ Jan 25, 2010 -> 08:30 PM) So, ultimately, if the DH position turns out to be as embarrassing as many expect, it's very convenient to say, "yes, Jones and Kotsay are terrible; but if (insert player) was producing well it wouldn't matter!" There's always going to be someone struggling. Even if the entire lineup is tanking it doesn't change the opinion of myself, and apparently many others on this website, that entering the season with those two sharing ABs just doesn't make sense. How does anyone, especially you, justify it? From your posts I gather that Kotsay and Jones aren't the ideal combination; but their presence won't make or break the team, so it shouldn't matter. We can always have more flexibility midseason. Am I wrong? For the sake of Guillen (and I don't mean anything concerning job security, just public backlash) he better hope Thome doesn't outproduce Kotsay/Jones. It'll be delicious if, come midseason, we're left having to overpay for a DH in the trade market, meanwhile Thome is producing a .850 OPS with 15 HRs all for $2 million. And I'm sure he'll destroy us. well its going to be kind of hard if thome (according to some) is going to be a primary pinch hitter, a role in which he isnt that good at in the first place.

QUOTE (southsideirish71 @ Jan 25, 2010 -> 08:11 PM) 'Whoever wants to come to the White Sox as long as I'm here, he's not going to be a full-time DH,'' Guillen said. ''Nobody. I don't care who it is.'' Maybe we should petition to move to the NL, because this type of plan isn't going to work well for the long term in the AL. lol. well, we'll see how smart ozzie is

QUOTE (iamshack @ Jan 25, 2010 -> 08:04 PM) We may indeed get him still. But my point is it's highly doubtful that the decision to acquire a huge bat like Gonzalez would have anything to do with signing Thome for $2m, other than the fact that we may be forced to overpay for such a bat because we didn't sign Thome when we had the chance. And see how things unfold? We've been watching nothing unfold in this regard for a month. Well, it just unfolded. And we're going to play Juan Pierre and Omar Vizquel at DH some games. Sorry, I am Ozzie and KW's biggest fan, but unless we are the Pittsburgh Pirates, that is unacceptable. everyone is just a bit too pessemistic. you never know what can happen. it might work out , who knows. its just not going to help or do anything, complaining and getting upset about the whole thing. do we really want to talk about this the whole rest of the offseason?

QUOTE (Jenksy Cat @ Jan 25, 2010 -> 08:00 PM) Typing like that makes you sound like a 12 year old who just got on AOL for the first time, sorry. Once I stopped typing like that, my wpm also increased dramatically. Its really pointless, but whatever floats your boat. just dont think its a big deal. on a sports board, im not typing h.w. wow, 2 words. dont have other things to cry about i guess. whatever floats YOUR boat too.

QUOTE (iamshack @ Jan 25, 2010 -> 07:58 PM) If you're holding out for the guy in your avatar, I really doubt that whether or not to acquire Jim Thome for $2m really had a large effect on that decision. As for other options, if Thome isn't a fit, none of the other slugging lefthanders are going to be a fit for Ozzie. At least not until he figures out halfway into the regular season that we need a middle of the order bat. And again, any player acquired at that point is most likely going ot cost us more than Thome would have now, or would have still been acquired even if Thome had been signed now. Secondly, there is simply no way that one could reasonably argue that adding Thome to a DH platoon would not improve that platoon. The numbers simply are not there. And I am a really big Andruw Jones fan. I hope for our sake that this somehow works, but on its face, this is f***ing stupid. no, i know were not getting him lol hes my fave. player(played for mexico in the wbc, awesome). i just dont think we should overreact. lets see how things unfold.

QUOTE (Thad Bosley @ Jan 25, 2010 -> 07:57 PM) Well, two reactions to that. A.) they both signed for rather cheap contracts, in the 5-6 million dollar range, and B.) if you combine that with Mr. Reinsdorf's assertion that there is still, in fact, some money left to bring in the "right" player, than I think you can easily conclude they could have been had. I don't mean to say that meaning they absolutely could have been had, but it would seem like they could have been had. If that little distinction makes any sense. Meanwhile, on a similar topic, if the only offer Johnny Damon is entertaining at the moment is in the neighborhood of $2-3 million dollars per year, and we aren't there to offer him more to pry him away from the Bronx, then I'd say shame on us. I mean, seriously - Jones and Kotsay. 'Nuff said. its in one of the threads, that the yankees outbid them for johnson, couldnt compete with their offer.

QUOTE (knightni @ Jan 25, 2010 -> 07:52 PM) Just wondering, but are people supposed to take you seriously with that syntax? im sorry my grammer and "syntax" isnt correct on a sports fan site "lol" i'll try to spell everything out in full from now on. wow, u know exactly what i was saying and ur complaining about it, must be really mad thome isnt coming back "lol" yea but we should take people serious who wanted to fire ozzie after every sox loss last year , ha
-
QUOTE (iamshack @ Jan 25, 2010 -> 07:48 PM) Honestly Melissa, as well as others who share this opinion, and no disrespect intended, but how could you be so incredibly selfish that you would rather the team be worse, and win less games, because you don't want to get personally frustrated as much by watching a certain player? What a crap attitude, and honestly, I am really f***ing tired of seeing it. no, i want the sox to win. and ur talking about the same people that were crying all yr how they hated thome and pods. hey, atleast my opinions arent all over. make up ur mind. fine, the season is over bcuz thome isnt coming back. i dont want him bcuz i feel theres still a chance they can get someone better.

QUOTE (Thad Bosley @ Jan 25, 2010 -> 07:46 PM) Ok Ozzie, fine. Have it your way. No Thome. No Thome, no Matsui, and no Nick Johnson. All affordable options who, for whatever reason, will not be on the South Side this year. Now, do you realize as a result of not bringing in any of those players your attack now from the left hand side of the plate this year will consist of A.J., Pierre, Teahen, Kotsay, and Vizquel? Are you really ok with that? That's good enough to help lift us from our sub .500, 3rd place finish last year to the promised land? Is that what you are telling us? I remind you, we've lost Jermaine Dye as well. Is Jake Peavy THAT good, and do you for some reason think the AL Central is going to be THAT inferior, that this DH-by-below-average-contributor committee idea is passable? Really? Please explain, because as of this moment I just don't get it. the sox didnt sign matsui and johnson bcuz of financial reasons. they would have gotten them if it werent for the money not bcuz ozzie didnt want them.

QUOTE (Kalapse @ Jan 25, 2010 -> 07:37 PM) You can pray all you want for a difference maker but the Sox started the Jones/Kotsay PR campaign a few weeks back and it's sure as s*** looking like it'll continue right on through opening day, Thome appeared to be the last gleaming hope we had at a seemingly competent hitter being acquired to take care of DH'ing duties. Sure I'll take a "difference maker" over Thome but that doesn't appear to be the cards. well heres a question for u, kinda interested in what u think: do u really think ozzie wants/likes this whole rotating dh thing with the current guys stated? maybe he just didnt want thome back(bcuz of what he'll give u at this stage in his career). meaning, lets say adrian gonzalez didnt play the field. if kenny came up to ozzie and said that hey, we can get this guy, u want him? do u really think ozzie would say no? (i dont, i think he'll happily take his production)
-
QUOTE (Kalapse @ Jan 25, 2010 -> 07:31 PM) It just means you'll see a terrible hitter in Omar Vizquel and a bad hitter in Mark Kotsay DH more often and you'll have the pleasure of watching a couple of mid 30 year old's in Jones and Kotsay weaken the defense every time they get a start in the outfield. Oh joy. hey,it may happen, but i really dont see vizquel dh'ing. im sure u dont want thome back but u just think its better than what we have right? why do we have to settle for someone thats not that good, that we dont want, etc bcuz we currently just have junk? cant we get someone a bit better, a difference maker? thome isnt a difference maker. may be better than jones but not a difference maker. there has to be someone out there (that can be had)
-
QUOTE (Kalapse @ Jan 25, 2010 -> 07:26 PM) Andruw Jones is slow, probably can't be trusted to play the field consistently anymore, strikes out a whole lot, draws a good amount of walks, hits for a terrible average and about 25% of his hits will be HR (only a few percentage points less than Thome.) I guess the good news is there's no real shift for a right handed hitter, what those who haven't seen Jones play in 5 years will soon find out is that he's basically a poor man's Jim Thome. i rather have the rotation than just thome. and u act like its 100% that hed be good and healthy this yr. u dont know. im not going to be like others and say were going to lose the division bcuz were not going to have jim thome. i wouldnt put it all on ozzie about the whole dh thing, they were going to get johnson,of course it was a money issue, not oz.

QUOTE (dmbjeff @ Jan 25, 2010 -> 07:24 PM) If he really wants Ozzieball, fine, but for gods sake, go get a bat that is a legitimate MLB starter with OBP skills. Go get Orlando Hudson, get Felipe Lopez and have them DH. These guys can at least do the little things, bunt, run the bases and play defense giving all the IF's a break. They are real MLB starters, Kotsay and Jones couldn't start for any other MLB team, yet we count on them this season? Why? gonza...jk.lol i wonder why the sox even had interest in chad tracy, doesnt seem like hes any good
-
QUOTE (gatnom @ Jan 25, 2010 -> 07:17 PM) I honestly can't believe people are happy about this... are there really that many here that think a Jones/Kotsay platoon will be good? no. but i know he walked quite a bit, hit hrs, etc. but didnt u get a tad bit tired of watching thome strikeout, esp against lefties late in a game, hit right into the shift, need 3 hits to score, etc? yes i realize hes probly better than what we have, but i just really want to move on

QUOTE (MHizzle85 @ Jan 25, 2010 -> 07:14 PM) Superb. Can we close this thread & stop all Thome talk on ST now? agreed

QUOTE (beleiveinbrian44 @ Jan 25, 2010 -> 05:10 PM) ive been a regular on this site for a really long time, but never post. but i saw this story on bobby and i thought i would post it. a perfect changeup sounds like hes gotten on the right path. hopefully he'll have a great year. http://www.soxtalk.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=76053 good story, i agree

QUOTE (Ranger @ Jan 24, 2010 -> 03:54 PM) I'm somewhat confused by this, as well. During the season, almost every bit of feedback I'd get on Thome was that fans were sick of his HR-or-nothing game and that they needed to trade/release/bench him. And now that he may not be coming back, people think the Sox need to sign him? ur awesome
-
QUOTE (CryptviLL @ Jan 24, 2010 -> 02:34 PM) Im with you man, as I said before - the only scenario I like thome as DH is strictly Platoon. and no its not jones, kotsay or vizquel only thats going to be in the dh spot. guys that need a day off will be there. i think we need a rotation bcuz guys like pk and cq, for example ,really need could benefit from that. and like they were saying on the score, thome simply isnt good unless hes getting reg ab's
-
QUOTE (chw42 @ Jan 24, 2010 -> 02:20 PM) A lot of outside people think this, I don't know why. me. u's act like thome is god or something, hell he may be awful and get hurt. our offense isnt going to suck or be better, just bcuz of thome. and yes ill take jones and kotsay and whoever needs a day off , over thome. im sick of hr or nothing, old base cloggers. just my opinion, and eveyone has their own opinoin and no one is right or wrong. plz no

QUOTE (Brian @ Jan 23, 2010 -> 03:47 PM) Cool play and all, but kinda overrated IMO with Molina running. yup. even one of the players said that, buehrle or pk i think
