  1. QUOTE (Thad Bosley @ Dec 8, 2009 -> 02:18 PM) Why do you think he's good for 20 home runs and 80 RBIs? What has he done to inspire such optimism? He's had three straight seasons of 500+ at-bats, and the most he's been able to muster is 15 home runs and 60 RBIs. He hasn't even driven in 70 runs in a season yet. Maybe playing in the Cell will help improve his numbers a little bit, but that's certainly not a lock. No, I was not happy when we got this guy in the first place, and I'm even less happy now that he's apparently going to be sticking around for the next three years. There is no part of his game that I would classify as "good". He doesn't hit for power. He doesn't have any speed. He doesn't get on base at a particularly good percentage of the time. He's apparently not so slick with the glove, and he strikes out a lot. What is there to like about him? It would be one thing if he were just a kid, only a year or two into his career, in which case you could expect him to steadily improve, but he's not. He's been around for a full five years now. I am not confident that he's all of a sudden going to bring his game up a level or two. Of course I hope I'm wrong, but like I said, I'm not confident about this guy at all. Not one iota. take a look at mark derosas career..
  2. i thought u were talking about adrian gonzalez
  3. QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Dec 5, 2009 -> 06:24 PM) Since the Sox are picking #13, isn't that pick protected? I would give up a second round pick in a second to grab Soriano, even if we dont deal Jenks. That guys stuff is nasty. yea but hes going to want to close. and say he would be a setup guy, thats a very expensive set up guy at 8mil+
  4. QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Dec 5, 2009 -> 03:36 PM) Even if we do get that big bat, we still need all those things you mentioned to happen to be an above average offense. it should be an interesting off season , with all these holes im sure kw isnt going to stand pat.im sure we'll be in for a big surprise
  5. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Dec 5, 2009 -> 02:12 PM) You can bet the Sox will be shaking some pretty significant trees. Kenny is looking for a big bat. well lets hope so because we really need one. i dont want to go into the season hoping* for teahen to produce, for cq to stay healthy and produce, for rios to bounce back, for beckham to continue where he left off, too many questions,we need that big bat. sure matsui or vlad can help but we need an even bigger bat
  6. QUOTE (WHITESOXRANDY @ Dec 5, 2009 -> 07:22 AM) I think the only reason that he isn't trading Jenks is because he hasn't seen a good offer for him. I think if he gets one, he'll pull the trigger. and a lot of other things, like who would replace him. if it is someone from the fa class, how much money do they want and how many yrs? or maybe he thinks one of the minor league guys can be ready in a yr and he doesnt want to sign someone for multiple yrs, who knows
  7. QUOTE (longshot7 @ Dec 4, 2009 -> 06:56 PM) who cares? that doesnt fly at all with ozzie. he has two rules remember, be on time and the anthem. so as dumb as it may sound,we wont get him because of that too
  8. QUOTE (Kenny Hates Prospects @ Dec 4, 2009 -> 02:29 PM) Agree, but the idea of any of Jones/Kotsay/GMJ DHing on a regular basis is frightening, and even if you do DH CQ, IMO the defensive gain going from CQ to GMJ or Kotsay isn't worth the loss in production from the OF, especially if we don't get a lead-off hitter and we end up leading off with GMJ or something. Yuck. And again the money issue is horrible for us in 2011 if we have Matthews. GMJ gets $11M in 2010 and $12M in 2011, meaning that's $17.5M in 2011 for Linebrink and GMJ for about $2-3M worth of production. If we had to take on GMJ to get AGon I'd do it, but Linebrink has to be part of the deal. Sox trade: Konerko ($12M in '10), Linebrink ($5M in '10, $5.5M in '11), prospects Angels trade: GMJ ($11M in '10, $12M in '11), prospects Padres trade: Gonzalez ($4.75M in '10, $5.5M in '11) Sox get: Gonzalez, GMJ Angels get: Konerko, Linebrink Padres get: Sox prospects, Angels prospects The Angels would add $6M to the payroll in 2010 which would fill the DH hole and add another arm to the pen (at least for the first half), and then cut payroll by $6.5M in 2011. The Angels actually get better in 2010 and save money in 2011, so that is why they would have to trade prospects. The Sox would cut $1.25M off the payroll in 2010 and add $12M to the payroll in 2011 (which is what a departing PK would otherwise free up). Edit: Also Cot's says GMJ's full NTC expired after '09 and he only can void a deal to one of four unnamed clubs for the remainder of his deal. So as long as the Sox aren't one of those four teams that would be one obstacle out of the way. In my scenario above though Linebrink is included, and he does have a NTC, although I don't know if it's full or partial. i dont care how it gets done, lets just get gonzalez lol
  9. QUOTE (Princess Dye @ Dec 3, 2009 -> 04:14 PM) For the Sox to be really pursuing this, things must be at a total standstill with Pods' people. If the price is right this could be a good idea. You can go after a real DH then.....and keep Beckham as the fallback plan for leadoff hitter. forget pods and his awful defense and baserunning. i think crisp is a way better option than pagan or no?
  10. QUOTE (League @ Dec 3, 2009 -> 06:01 AM) So, if this is your logic, you must think Gavin Floyd is pretty horrible as well, right? Career: 36-29 - 4.67 ERA - .259 avg - 1.37 WHIP good one lol
  11. QUOTE (balfanman @ Dec 1, 2009 -> 01:36 PM) Just a matter of semantics I guess, but I would consider Upton a huge move. but why would you want to trade good prospects for him, because like someone said in a different thread. he has a ton of potential but he is a question mark. its not 100% sure thing like gonzalez. if im making a trade its for gonzalez not for upton...or am i wrong?
  12. QUOTE (Ranger @ Nov 28, 2009 -> 03:48 PM) Let me add that an "outsider" is not going to change the sport by saying, "here's a new idea: if you want to have a better chance of winning, you should try replacing your well-paid, contractually-bound, historically-productive, yet currently-struggling players with minor league players because it can't hurt." Unless I'm reading this wrong, this is essentially your idea, Shack. A team will never buy into that approach until it is proven that going with the unproven minor leaguer works better than going with a veteran who has a recent, good resume or until the pay structure in baseball changes. yea,its not that the teams are that dumb. but money simply is a huge factor. soriano was awful last yr and has lots of moments that he is. the cubs wont consider replacing him with a minor leaguer because ur simply not going to sit a guy making that much money
  13. QUOTE (Ranger @ Nov 28, 2009 -> 03:35 PM) Speaking of "wow." I did not say that fans can't have an opinion. But, I don't believe that you and I or anyone else that watches the game have thought of something that people who do this for a living have not already considered. We aren't going to revolutionize baseball and how personnel is handled. I would say that, yes, if a certain way of handling players is how just about every franchise in the game does it, then it likely that it is the best way. And I don't believe that the Sox failed to bench Linebrink and call up a minor leaguer simply because they didn't think of it. They OBVIOUSLY thought of it, but realized there were too many reasons they could/should NOT do that. I'm guessing that you're referring to the likes of Bill James in your assertion the MLB has hired "intelligent people" to help re-think how things are done. But what you're talking about is statistical analysis of players with track records. A different way to crunch numbers. These are really the only sort of "ordinary people" that have found their way into MLB that have any affect on personnel decisions. A statistician may find a new formula that better helps indicate a player's worth, but no amount of statistics is going to be able to predict when a minor league pitcher is ready for the show, ready to handle the pressure and the change of being promoted, and is going to give you better than what you already have on the roster. This sort of knowledge comes from being able to interact with that minor leaguer on a daily basis. At any rate, the intention of the newer statistics is to reduce uncertainty. Only logic would tell you that there is less uncertainty with a healthy, veteran pitcher that has real, recent success at the major league level (despite current struggles) than there is with a completely unproven minor-leaguer that may or may not be ready to pitch at the major league level. You're operating under the assumption that it could not hurt, when yes, it most definitely could. It's almost beside the point anyway, since teams operate this way because patience works and because they have to. Track record wins out for a reason, Shack. ur right cris time to end this madness lol
  14. got the 32" sony at target, didnt have to wait outside in the cold , waited in the car and went in after everyone else did and still got one of two that was left
  15. QUOTE (Princess Dye @ Nov 27, 2009 -> 07:56 AM) We'd all agree Linebrink is not great. But managers never do a nonstop shuffling of the deck chairs in their pen. That's something the fans always want but never gets put into practice. More often than not they just ride it out with the losers theyre stuck with. piniella used gregg for almost the whole yr as the closer, well atleast way too much lol
  16. QUOTE (fathom @ Nov 26, 2009 -> 02:12 PM) He isn't? he is?
  17. QUOTE (fathom @ Nov 26, 2009 -> 02:04 PM) I hate to break it to you, but everyone who's not a White Sox fan thinks Ozzie is a jerk. ok, they "think" but we know he isnt. i think its pretty much been proven bonds is a jerk. people say it because they know it. theres a reason the players and media hated him
  18. QUOTE (Kalapse @ Nov 26, 2009 -> 01:55 PM) Our catcher of the future is a roider, god knows how many others on the current roster and more than a few have gone through our organization in recent years including a couple from the '05 team. I don't think the Sox are all that clean. to me its not so much about him being a ped user, its the fact that hes a jerk
  19. QUOTE (fathom @ Nov 26, 2009 -> 01:31 PM) I think you'd be surprised at how many people like Bonds still. what is there to like about him? well i know theres quite a few sox people that dont like him (farmer, hawk,dj, kittle, to name a few) Cant imagine much people in the organization that likes him
  20. QUOTE (nitetrain8601 @ Nov 26, 2009 -> 11:47 AM) It puts alot of attention on the White Sox. That's a good thing. Honestly though, it won't happen in the end. hes 45 and off the roids, no way. jersey sales? yea i dont think id be interested or that many people would be in getting his jersey. 0% chance we get him, thank god
  21. QUOTE (Lemon_44 @ Nov 26, 2009 -> 07:36 AM) I think KW is lining up something big coming up soon. He has to be confident that he can land either Upton, Gonzales, Figgins, or maybe even Miguel Cabrera. Otherwise, why would he be signing these older veteran guys to fill out the bench. If you didn't think you were going to have a legit shot at winning it, the more likely thing to do would be to integrate the youngsters on the bench and let them get some seasoning. And, i don't even the optimistic Kenny can think the Sox everyday lineup is good enough to compete with the best as it stands right now. I think the first domino to fall will be PK being traded.Maybe to SF for Sanchez who could fill Hudson's potential role as bullpen, 5th starter if Garcia fails. That would allow Hudosn to be moved in a deal for Gonzales and not hurt the Sox future as much. Or it would free up money for a Figgins signing. Either way, with the way this team is being stacked up, something has to be looming on the horizon. The Xbox, way out there, dream scenario would be do the PK trade to SF, send Hudson,Flowers, Morel, etc, for Gonzales ,and then send Jenks and some propects to TB for Upton. Hey, it Thanksgiving a guy can dream can't he? lineup: LF-Quentin CF-Rios RF-Upton 3B-Teahan SS-Ramirez 2B-Beckham 1B-Gonzales C-AJ DH-??? maybe do a late, cheap signing of Delgado,Thome or someone like that. bench-Kotsay, Vizquel, Jones, Blanco, Nix SP-Peavy SP-Buehrle SP-Danks SP-Floyd SP-Garcia RP-Linebrink RP-Carrasco RP-Sanchez RP-Pena RP-Nunez CL-Thornton upton and gonzalez?lol figgins is way too over hyped, i dont want him. hes not worth about 10mil for 3,4 years. let someone else give him that contract. gonzalez is just perfect for this team but doesnt appear like it will happen, atleast not anytime soon. oh,and thats an awful bullpen lol
  22. QUOTE (iamshack @ Nov 25, 2009 -> 09:22 PM) He actually used to be a ss, if I'm not mistaken... yea but i remember reading somewhere that in the d.r. he used to be good at basketball and could of gone either way ...found a clip only " ...High School in Loma de Cabrera, DR, where he played baseball and basketball"
  23. QUOTE (bschmaranz @ Nov 25, 2009 -> 09:08 PM) Between Washington and Arizona last season, 0-6 with 6.00 ERA, 1.98 WHIP, 7.4BB/9... just ugly. he used to be a real good basketball player right? maybe he should consider that instead lol
  24. QUOTE (Kalapse @ Nov 25, 2009 -> 06:58 PM) Because he bats in front of your best hitters, that's why OBP at the top is so damn important, you need to get guys on base for your RBI men. The word "leadoff" refers to leading the top of your order, not batting first in an inning. That's why the phrase "he leads the inning once a game" is irrelevant, he's not batting at the top to get your inning going, he's there to kickoff the best part of your lineup. i know,i was saying we need a leadoff hitter, that speed at the top
  25. QUOTE (nitetrain8601 @ Nov 25, 2009 -> 06:39 PM) Leads off once a game. If Crisp was a stud or at least could sustain a high OBP and high average, then I would have a slight hesitation. then why all the talk about having a "leadoff" guy?
