QUOTE (WCSox @ Dec 17, 2009 -> 06:30 PM) People tend to over-value the contribution of a manager to a team's success. This isn't the NFL, where offensive and defensive schemes make all of the difference. Baseball mangers don't coach, they manage... pitch counts, egos, etc. They fill out the lineup card, sit in the dugout, eat sunflower seeds, pull the starter when he's out of gas, and talk to the media afterwards. If it's a really important game, they might talk to Joe Buck in the 5th inning. Managers are primarily leaders and motivators. A good pitching coach (Don Cooper, Dave Duncan, Mel Stottlemyre, Leo Mazzone) will help a team win a lot more games than a good manager. If you want to point fingers, point them at the declining, injury-prone veterans who didn't get it done in 2007 and 2009. couldnt agree more.thats why i defend ozzie so much.

QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Dec 17, 2009 -> 06:28 PM) On paper, they might be better than they were in 2009. That's kinda scary. they added granderson and johnson but now they dont have matsui and maybe not damon...they have too much money oh, im also surprised they didnt sign anyone for the pen, hughes and joba dont convince me too much as setup men as we saw in the playoffs. well theyll just use rivera for two innings again lol theyre guna miss that guy so much when he retires, awesome.
-
nick johnson just has to pass his physical and he'll be signed by the yanks for 1 yr,5.5mil. oh well

QUOTE (The Ginger Kid @ Dec 16, 2009 -> 11:35 PM) would the new GM of the padres trade away the team's best player to his old boss as his first big deal? If so, he'd better come out smelling like a rose. did he leave on good or bad terms?

QUOTE (chisoxfan09 @ Dec 16, 2009 -> 09:36 PM) Mel, just look at the incredible success the Cubs are havin with Soriano's mega-deal!! lol i know. when we signed pk for 5 yrs we thought it was great, now look, we wish he was gone already lol

QUOTE (Tex @ Dec 16, 2009 -> 07:40 PM) Looking over everyone's list, I would like tos ay this about Billy Botch. I can not remember anyone who faced up to dis suckyness with more character and professionalism. As his career went down the s***ter, he didn't hide, he accepted responsibility and was brutally honest at times. Later he started beating up neighbors, but I have to say of all the names mentioned, he's the one I have some empathy and respect for. i always felt sick to my stomache when he came into a game lol...didnt jose paniagua only play one game with the sox..facing the twins and he stuck his middle finger at the ump, or am i wrong? cant remember

QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Dec 16, 2009 -> 03:57 PM) I agree with most of this. I'll never believe that will ever get into a bidding war for elite free agents. Albert Belle was the last one almost 15 years ago. Like you said, it's a risk. I was just trying to expand on what fathom was saying. And personally, I think Tyler Flowers should be considered an untouchable. Not because I think he's THAT good. But AJ 's got one year left on his deal. And the days of Josh Paul, Mark Johnson, Jamie Burke and Sandy Alomar Jr. did serious psychological damage to me that I still have yet to recover from. that might be one of the reasons why kenny might not be going after someone like agon i think, because even if we have the money, the sox never go past 5 yrs and super star players nowadays want 8 years

QUOTE (SoxAce @ Dec 15, 2009 -> 10:32 PM) I would say a better comparison to Pierre in regards to a leadoff hitter was his old teammate and pretty much a leadoff hitter his whole career.. Luis Castillo and Castillo still walks a bit more but also K's a bit more. I would take Castillo over Pierre anyday. his stats from last yr werent that bad, i wonder why they want to dump him so bad, must be a money issue
-
QUOTE (monomach @ Dec 15, 2009 -> 10:29 PM) You're bringing up guys who are twice as good as Pierre. They have nothing to do with Pierre's s***ty walk rate because one of them can hit for a league-leader type of average and one of them can hit for power and walk twice as much as Pierre. Neither of these players is similar to Pierre in any way. "It's ok for Joe Crede to strike out a lot because Adam Dunn strikes out a lot, too." See? no, because i wasnt comparing , i was saying about leadoff men in general, they dont have to walk because if they dont thats awful.
-
QUOTE (SoxAce @ Dec 15, 2009 -> 10:27 PM) Sizemore also has a career .367 OBP, not to mention hasn't had been below a .340 OBP since his rookie year, and he (nor Granderson) are really "leadoff" type hitters, cause of their power (or power potential). ill be very happy if pierre hits .315, .345obp, and walked..24-30 times, fine by me. whatever, just glad pods isnt on this team anymore lol
-
QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Dec 15, 2009 -> 10:23 PM) So it's ok that he doesn't walk much because Ichiro doesn't walk much...plus he's a much worse hitter than Ichiro, but you're not comparing the two. Huh? no,im saying that its not necessary for a leadoff guy to have a high walk total. ill take sizemore as my leadoff guy anyday and he walked 60 times only . even with his .248 avg
-
QUOTE (Kalapse @ Dec 15, 2009 -> 10:19 PM) You are absolutely right. If Juan Pierre hits .350 next year his lack of walks will not be an issue. which is why i said im not comparing the two. i just said that its not necessary. u can still be good if u dont walk
-
QUOTE (bucket-of-suck @ Dec 15, 2009 -> 10:11 PM) Brad Hawpe. not that it means anything at all butfound this when i was trying to see how much money hes making next yr. (7.5mil): October 19, 2009 Despite rumors to the contrary, the Rockies do not plan on trading Brad Hawpe and his $7.5 million 2010 salary this offseason, according to InsideTheRockies.com. and i remember seeing how they didnt plan on doing so
-
QUOTE (Kalapse @ Dec 15, 2009 -> 09:58 PM) He's in the bottom 9% of all qualified hitters in BB% over the past 3 seasons. Isn't that kind of a big deal for the guy who will get the most PA on your team and hit in front of RBI men? When you're looking for a leadoff hitter the first thing you look for is a high walk rate and to go along with that; a guy who can take some pitches and work the count, not only does Pierre not do either well, he's very bad at each. im not trying to compare the 2, but ichiro walked only 32 times last yr. ur leadoff hitter doesnt have to walk. and he had a .386 obp without the walks. nice if he could but not necessary.

QUOTE (Ranger @ Dec 15, 2009 -> 12:19 AM) So you two think it is likely? I'm here to tell you that it isn't. It's not completely impossible, but it's also not likely. It would take some good fortune to make that happen. Let's hope good fortune is coming to the south side. If it does, I'll be the first to throw a party. yea we know its not, we just want it to happen but it wont

QUOTE (b-Rye @ Dec 14, 2009 -> 09:46 PM) Im sick of hearing about this trade already... it dont make much sense for philly but halladay is slightly better than lee... i don't know why they'd trade top prospects to exchange them though.. also isn't cliff lee's salary way less in 2010??? yea doesnt make much sense to me
-
QUOTE (hitlesswonder @ Dec 14, 2009 -> 09:34 PM) Unfortunately, the Alex Rios move was a bust. He has a .775 career OPS. In 2009 he had a sub .700 OPS. The Sox are paying 10 million a year for a Brian Anderson clone: an awful hitter whose defense is vastly over-rated. Rios contract is why the Sox couldn't get Figgins this off-season. The Alex Rios claim is a disaster. i know rios played really bad when he got traded to him, but he is a far superior player than BA

QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Dec 14, 2009 -> 09:28 PM) The article Knight posted mentioned Happ and Blanton. I seriously doubt they trade Drabek after refusing to part with him in July. i saw it on mlb rumors, the "9:15"
-
QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Dec 14, 2009 -> 09:26 PM) Not surprising. It takes two to waltz. The Padres are under no kinda pressure to trade AGON (unlike with Peavy) for anything less than a mega-haul. KW obviously has no problem trading prospects. It could possibly be, and this seems to be a difficult concept for some, that we simply don't have the pieces the Padres want. yea, if we simply had a bit of a better pitcher prospect than hudson
-
QUOTE (GreatScott82 @ Dec 14, 2009 -> 09:25 PM) Ranger Shmanger. Since when does KW let Cowley know whats going on? He was pissed Cowley leaked the Putz situation- im guessing his next big move will be even more closer to the vest.. Anything is possible Melissa! i hope ur right, agon in a sox uniform..wow
-
QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Dec 14, 2009 -> 09:20 PM) Happ and Blanton? lol. So their rotation would be Halladay, Hamels, ?, ?, ?...? I'd just ignore every rumor until there's an official confirmation. theyre saying happ or drabek is involved. yea, whatever, doesnt involve us lol
-
QUOTE (GreatScott82 @ Dec 14, 2009 -> 09:04 PM) Call me crazy but I have a feeling KW goes balls out and aqcuires Adrian Gonzales. If there is one guy to give up a huge chunk of your farm for- its for a cheap superstar such as A-Gon. It fits KW's mold perfectly. . ranger said its unlikely lol
-
QUOTE (knightni @ Dec 14, 2009 -> 08:33 PM) http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/news?slug=ap-p...p&type=lgns AP source: Phils have tentative deal for Halladay if they give up happ, its a real bad trade i think.
-
QUOTE (Chet Kincaid @ Dec 14, 2009 -> 08:13 PM) Matsui gone. I'm starting to think that we'd be LUCKY to get Thome and Pods back. Maybe we should start the "trade all the veterans for prospects" talk that we hear towards the end of the season when we suck. Yeah that or the "let the kids play!" talk. Somebody talk me off a ledge and tell me why the Sox offense isn't going to make me wanna shoot my tv next year... all i have to say is that its barely december! kw will get it done.

QUOTE (chw42 @ Dec 14, 2009 -> 04:09 PM) It's a better name. i dont know,i just feel like vlad has the potential to put up better (power) numbers at the cell than matsui
