  1. QUOTE (knightni @ Nov 6, 2008 -> 05:28 PM) He is the white Juan Uribe. oh wow, i didnt realize he was that bad this year , .213, 10, 35 jeez what happend to him lol waaay too much money for that
  2. QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Nov 6, 2008 -> 03:58 PM) I still and will continue to think that Daniel Cabrera is a viable option. I see him as more of a reliever, but if he ever can harness his stuff, he'll be a stud. everyone here loves his stuff but he has yet to do anything with it. coop is good but we cant assume he will fix him. i dont know, i just dont see him all of the sudden turning the corner. although i would take a flier on him too looking at his number, my god they make u cringe lol 180ip, 90 bbs, only 95 ks,199 hits, 5.25 era yikes lol
  3. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Nov 6, 2008 -> 03:39 PM) His agent is Darek Braunecker. Yes, THE Darek Braunecker. Here is MLB.com on his rumored asking price. He left 2/$24 on the table by opting out. wow. i dont think it would be a good idea to sign him for that many years. next lol
  4. QUOTE (Thunderbolt @ Nov 5, 2008 -> 10:54 PM) If I were the Padres I wouldn’t accept anything less than Vitters, Veal, Ceda, Pie and Marshall i wouldnt take that. i dont see how pie can even have any more value than ba at this point. as bad as ba has been offensively, pie has been way worse lol and marshall, i dont think he'll be anything great, maybe if anything a 4. if im the padres, i want atleast one stud prospect or young player along with the minor leaguers. and none of those are that. the cubs can dream lol and sigining demp for 4 years is gunna be a mistake QUOTE (fathom @ Nov 5, 2008 -> 10:30 PM) Ugh, a rotation of Zambrano, Peavy, Harden, Dempster and Lilly would be one of the best in the NL this decade. http://msn.foxsports.com/mlb/story/8761340...62&ATT=3498 "Dempster, after succeeding under pressure in Chicago" not in the last game he pitched Lol
  5. ok,most of us want javy gone and theres all that speculation about trading him, but if we do, who replaces him? all we do is talk about getting rid of him but not the replacement buehrle' floyd danks ? ? if we were to get someone like freddy or use a minor leaguer , that would be for the 5th spot. what about the 4th spot? (im not counting on jose at all) we just might be better off with javy
  6. QUOTE (Kenny Hates Prospects @ Oct 30, 2008 -> 06:46 PM) There have been those who have failed, yes, but there have been some very good closers to make the transition. Just off the top of my head, both Dotel and Lidge were setup men under Wager, and Dotel was doing pretty well for himself before he blew out his shoulder or whatever. One of Thornton's closest comparables, George Sherrill, made the transition successfully last year. The fact is, the sample size is way too small to say he wouldn't be effective. Established roles is all I think he needs. We saw in the post season this year that he is capable of working under pressure. Bobby Jenks' career line: 235.2 IP, 3.09 ERA, 7.49 H/9, 0.50 HR/9, 2.90 BB/9, 8.55 K/9, 1.15 WHIP Matt Thornton's career line: 267.1 IP, 3.97 ERA, 7.98 H/9, 0.98 HR/9, 4.48 BB/9, 9.02 K/9, 1.38 WHIP About 1/3 of Thornton's numbers come from Seattle where he was pretty bad. Still, on paper going from Jenks to Thornton is a slight downgrade, but there are other factors. Thornton is owned $6.575M over the next three years, and through arbitration who knows how much Bobby is going to get? The difference should be at least $12M or more over that period, plus by dealing Bobby you get a package that really helps the team now and in the future. Is Bobby the closer and Thornton the lefty setup man worth more than Thornton the closer, Poreda/Richard as the lefty setup man, $12M+, and a couple young players who have the potential to be very good for a long time? That's a question the Sox need to ask themselves. I don't see them trading Bobby overall because Kenny doesn't usually like to deal Major League players until they've lost some value, but a Jenks deal could end up working out great. i agree with a lot of what u said, but if theyre going to trade jenks, u better be 100% sure ur getting the right players, not busts. 4 example, on paper, reed morse and olivo for freddy looked great for seattle. where r those players now?
  7. QUOTE (kyyle23 @ Oct 30, 2008 -> 06:11 PM) You just cant assume someone can close because of their stuff. Its a huge mental adjustment, and looking at the fact that he struggled when put into that role would make me very hesitant to do it again. thank you. look at the very good setup men that got put into that role and didnt do well. take it however u want, but he has 5 saves in his career in 19 opportunities.
  8. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Oct 30, 2008 -> 05:26 PM) So did Toby Hall when we signed him. he had a horrible year though and the yr b4 i think. olivos numbers r pretty good esp considering the number of games he played. and he has way better d
  9. QUOTE (Kenny Hates Prospects @ Oct 30, 2008 -> 05:50 PM) Per http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/ it says the Rays are looking for a RH hitting corner OF. They should also need a closer. To me, this seems like the perfect team to deal with. I'd be willing to offer Dye and Jenks in a package if the Rays would be willing to part with one of Edwin Jackson/Jeff Niemann, one of Jake McGee/Wade Davis, and Eduardo Morlan. Slide Thornton to closer and sign a lefty set-up man, with Richard as the 2nd non-closing lefty out of the pen. I don't know if that deal would be realistic or not, but there are several possibilities with the Rays. The only guy I wouldn't want is Reid Brignac. The best possible moves for the Sox IMO would be to do something like the above, then deal Javy for pitching prospects. If the Sox could go into 2009 with 2 rotation openings but 3-4 legit prospects who are ready and have ceilings of #3 or higher it could actually be an improvement over Javy + Richard in 2009, save us money, and help us get much younger in the future. If the Sox did something like that and Contreras came back in the second half, they would be able to go to a 6-man rotation to give the young guys extra rest, or just have a guy skip a start here and there. So anyway, anyone have any thoughts on a potential TB deal? Who would you target? Who would you trade? What is realistic? its funny how people just assume thornton would be a good closer lol
  10. QUOTE (Wanne @ Oct 30, 2008 -> 05:18 PM) IIRC he was absolutely crushed when the Sox dealt him. He loved it here. I'd take him back in a heartbeat! ok, u's are all saying that. while i would love to bring him back, havent u guys heard, he wants to start! so if no team wants him as a starter we could resign him, so who knows.
  11. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Oct 30, 2008 -> 11:28 AM) Is the $400K guaranteed or just if he makes the MLB roster? Or is it a split contract where he would be paid Charlotte wages if he doesn't make the team out of ST? "Nix will make $400,000 if on the White Sox's major league roster. " denver post
  12. QUOTE (DBAHO @ Oct 30, 2008 -> 02:32 PM) I'd take Blanco as a backup. Pudge will want a starting gig somewhere I'd think. Either way, we need a backup catcher who's going to be better defensively than Hall was. id take blanco in a second. he has a really good arm and hes not that bad with the bat. but the cubs know that too and id be surprised if they didnt pick up his option for 3 mil... looking at his numbers he only hit 3 hrs and drove in 12 in 120 abs lol but the d is there
  13. QUOTE (DBAHO @ Oct 30, 2008 -> 02:20 PM) Besides Olivo, who's the best defensive FA C out there on the market? pudge, but that probly wont happen. blanco, if he doesnt stay with the cubs, thats about it..i dont know how good barajas or estrada are defensively
  14. great i know most catchers are slow but he was tooo slow. and couldnt throw anyone out. its not like he was all that great offensivly anyways, u can get the same internally 4 the minimum
  15. QUOTE (DBAHO @ Oct 19, 2008 -> 09:51 PM) Bit quiet ATM, so I'll start up another off-season thread. The Sox are probably going to have around $15-20M to spend this off-season if they want, maybe more, depending if JR will increase the payroll again. We've got OC, KG, JU, and JC coming off the books which alone is around $20M in salary at least. I can't remember what the deal will be with JC's contract RE insurance. Also, KW may try to keep bringing in a younger core as he has done in the past few off-seasons, bringing in guys like Floyd, Danks and Quentin etc. I can definitely see one of JD or PK being offered around in trades, and I think the Giants would certainly have an interest in PK. If we were looking for a potential OF replacement, a guy I saw got mentioned as possible trade bait was Jeremy Hermida. Here are his numbers on the past 2 seasons; 2007 - .296/.369/.501 2008 - .249/.323/.406 I think they maybe looking for a young third baseman, so maybe Josh Fields would fit the bill. I'd definitely offer Fields + other pieces for Hermida if you traded Dye, because I think if he could get back to where he was in 2007, he'd have a massive impact on the Southside as Quentin did this season. Second base wise, I saw that the A's are probably going to lock up Ellis to a 2 year deal today. Hudson's the main one on the market, and I would offer an inflated short - term deal, to try and sign him, but wouldn't go anything more than 2 years with an option for a 3rd. I know rockraines has mentioned J.J Hardy though a few times. He's posted OPS's of .786 and .821 over the past 2 seasons, so he could definitely be a trade option also. The Brewers would want some starting arms though to replace Sheets and C.C though I guess. The reviews were on the positive side for Scott Olsen, Mike Jacobs, Dan Uggla, and Alfredo Amezaga. The scout apparently recommended against Jeremy Hermida, Kevin Gregg, and Josh Willingham. Hermida's report was particularly damning, with the scout claiming the right fielder has "no passion for the game." -rotoworld
  16. QUOTE (Thunderbolt @ Oct 21, 2008 -> 02:26 PM) The best option is probably Hank White. Otherwise, work Bard out and see how his health has progressed since his surgery. When healthy the guy was spraying the ball all over Petco, and was fairly steady behind the plate that would be great but i seriously doubt the cubs would let him go
  17. QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Oct 21, 2008 -> 03:28 PM) You do realize that's from The Onion, right? Lol i didnt even notice! i just glanced right through it! oops!
  18. QUOTE (Hawkfan @ Oct 21, 2008 -> 01:39 PM) http://www.theonion.com/content/node/50818 yea, who cares that he did that 2 his wife, he pitched great after that, thats more important
  19. i wonder what the red sox r guna do with varitek. bring him back just bcuz hes the captain?
  20. QUOTE (ChiSox_Sonix @ Oct 21, 2008 -> 10:12 AM) Bring back Miggy. I dont think anyone's ever questioned his arm and he can actually hit a little too and he can run faster than half the team
  21. QUOTE (StatManDu @ Oct 21, 2008 -> 10:11 AM) I say forget Toby Hall and find the best-throwing catcher out there no matter who it is and bring him North. If it's Donny Lucy. Good. Paul Phillips. Bring him back. Francisco Hernandez. Do it. Cole Armstrong. Bring him on. I would also put forth that if Ozzie gets a good throwing catcher he use him in late-inning situations much like an outfielder because. The stolen base rate against the Sox -- granted much of it has to do the pitchers -- is embarrassing. Here are the free agent catchers (gleaned from MLBrumors.com) Brad Ausmus (40) Paul Bako (37) Rod Barajas (33) - $2.5MM club option for '09 with a $0.5MM buyout Josh Bard (31) Michael Barrett (32) Henry Blanco (37) - $3MM mutual option for '09 with a $0.3MM buyout Johnny Estrada (33) Toby Hall (33) - $2.25MM club option for '09 with a $0.15MM buyout Jason LaRue (35) Paul Lo Duca (37) Miguel Olivo (30) - $2.7MM mutual option for '09 with a $0.1MM buyout Ivan Rodriguez (37) David Ross (32) Javier Valentin (33) Jason Varitek (37) Gregg Zaun (38) well thats him, but will we get him? no
  22. QUOTE (BearSox @ Oct 20, 2008 -> 09:07 PM) 1.) Contreras won't be throwing again for a while now, and in fact, I'd say there's a good chance his career is over. 2.) Anyone saying that they'd prefer Contreras over Vazquez is plain and simple stupid. if contreras were to retire would the sox still have to pay him what hes owed in 09?
  23. QUOTE (bigruss22 @ Oct 14, 2008 -> 04:11 PM) THE Carlos Quentin oh...lol im a little more worried about the cf situation..its guna be swish again? i hope not
  24. QUOTE (bigruss22 @ Oct 14, 2008 -> 02:44 PM) Hes also a liability in the field, once again he has talent there but doenst use it properly. I dont think that trade would entice the Brewers.... He would be your favorite over TCQ or Danks or any other star on this team right now? Also, I am not racist or anything, I jsut find it interesting that many athletes who are perceived as five tool players are usually minorities, which makes sense because from my experiences in playing sports the most athletic kids are usually nonwhite, but alot of these players get huge attention on their potential, that they have a quick swing, they have a strong arm, they are extremely fast. Seems almost too good to be true, and I think it is, for most of these guys dont have baseball skills, from inexperience or jsut not having it. Yes they can launch a ball in bp, or run a fast times in drills, but when it comes down to it they dont have 'it' to fulfill that potential. Im talking about guys like Adam Jones, Delmon Young, Weeks, etc, I just dont have any faith as a baseball fan that these guys will ever live up to their potential. Yes, they are all VERY young, and have loads of time to get there, I jsut dont think they many of these athletes have the baseball instinct that is required to succeed at this level. Once again, I am not racist, nor trying to be, for there have been white guys with the skillset but lack of baseball instinct also. I guess I am comparing them to guys who have tremendous baseball instinct, but no athleticism, and how they may also succeed at lower levels but once the competition gets harder they cant keep up, except alot of these guys are never placed with the huge potential tag. Sorry to hijack this thread, jsut something that came up in my mind. what does the "t" stand for? ive seen it used a lot
