Machado signs with Padres 10/300
Because he hasn't failed yet?

I would be satisfied if he turns into a Brian downing type player as a catcher with the high OBP.

I think part of it will be Jay will be better in a part time role so his will improve. I don't think Moncada will change his strikeout ways and while he will improve in power and other aspects of the game I don't think he will be a great OBP guy. So he won't be a bust but OBP will be his weakness.

Possible. I think based on each if their histories that Jay will have the higher OBP next year.

I understand the point. However, the 30 or so at bats that Anderson or Moncada will be deprived won't make much of a difference. As the lineup stands, the Sox have too many #9 hitters so Jay needs to be somewhere else in the lineup.

Only going on last year. Jay had a better OBP.

No one is after anyone this offseason.

This is true. But that was a rationale as why why he would be there, if he is in the lineup. I don't think 30 at bats will make that much difference in the development of Anderson or Moncada.

Anderson has a lifetime OBP of 286 and was 281 last year. Moncada has a lifetime of 318 and 315 last year Jay has a 352 lifetime and a 330 last year He will be on base more than either of those two next year.

Exactly. The NBA is roughly 50%. It varies from 49-52 depending on how close to the cap the teams are.

I disagree. Players who were caught and served their punishment are in a different category.

in the NBA, the players are guaranteed to get about 50% of all basketball related revenues. It's in the CBA.

It was more the clubhouse guys and other staff that he treated that way. You can tell a lot about the players by the way they treat this group in the clubhouse when they aren't in the public eye.

Yes. Don't believe AJs version. Stan is a good guy. Stan was just checking on him as any trainer would do.

It did happen. AJ got hit in the cajones during practice and went down. The trainer came over and asked him how he felt. AJ punched there and told him, "like that."

Yes. This has been pretty well established.

I dont know Machado but AJ wasn't an act. He was an a$$hole as a person. Treated people like dirt.

It would be a good business move.

Even if the ad revenue stays the same, the Cubs will get a bigger share of it not having to split it with other partners.
-

The ad revenue will be more just for the Cubs as they start their own network. No longer splitting it with the Sox, bulls and Blackhawks from the previous station. I'm not saying it's going to happen but depending on how low the price goes, I could see them looking into it.

I don't know. It may have been the the Cubs were out at the original asking price but he is nor getting what he wanted. Maybe the Cubs would be in at the lower price. Imagine the media hype with Harper and the new local broadcasting company they are starting. The ad revenue may pay for the luxury tax penalty.

That's was even before my time when I can remember going to games.

The starting pitcher has an effect on 100 pitches per game for 30 or so starts that's 3000 plays. That's more than the 600 at bats plus his defensive plays or at least close. He has more impact on his 30 games than the hitter has spread out over the 150 or so games that most hitters play.

I love Portland and Salem. If you time for another game, go to a Portland Seadog game. Cool park and fun. Salem is self explanatory and has a ton of good microbreweries.

I would disagree with each one of these concepts. Pitchers are responsible for many more pitches per game than any hitter. This is the fundamental flaw in the usage discussion. I agree with the long term contract aspect but that neglects the drafting and development capital used for the staff. They need to use more capital overall to acquire deep staffs. You need to have enough pitchers to go 20 deep with quality to have a good season. I think it should be 8 deep for starters but the way the new philosophy goes you could go with more relievers.
