  1. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Aug 11, 2014 -> 10:06 AM) Which leads to the arguments about his not running out ground balls or doing bat flips, etc. Let's go back to 15 or so years ago, when he supposedly had a degenerative hip condition and was fated to end up like a Joe Crede, out of baseball by age 30. He's never going to be Mike Trout, he can't run...he doesn't have a lot of range at 1B, he's losing his hair, etc. JOKING. At any rate, he's been one of the best ambassadors in baseball for his team, so I don't have any problem with him. He's never been my favorite, either, but I guess the best word is appreciate him and everything he's accomplished for the franchise. Paulie also doesn't seem like one of those guys (ala Gabe Kapler) who spend their entire offseason working on weights/health/nutrition. He's more from that Mark Buehrle, Thome or AJ old-school way of thinking. Would he be sitting on edge of the Hall of Fame if he took better care of himself, or could run 25% faster? Maybe, but probably not. This could not be further from the truth. With his degenerative hip condition he has had to work harder than most other players just to play this long. His off season work is second to none.
  2. QUOTE (greg775 @ Aug 10, 2014 -> 10:09 PM) Thanks ptatc. I would have stretched and been in big physical trouble had I not got this advice from you. I'm a little surprised the twinge and slight soreness back there (I can feel it at times when I'm walking around in my dress shoes) is to shelve me til Wednesday. Does the twinge mean the hammy is about to rip apart soon if I was to work out? After your post I'm a little concerned I'll be walking Monday and the hammy will explode. Thank u very much. The twinge means that the muscle fibers around the tear are still sensitive and there is edema in the area irritating the surrounding tissue. If it is still so tender you are getting the twinges don't walk very strenuously if at all. I would not do aggressive walking until you can walk painfree at anormal pace. It won't explode but it will delay the healing process. A foam roll or massage stick will help the healing process by moving the edema.
  3. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Aug 10, 2014 -> 01:26 PM) The specific post I replied to asked "why would you not be one of his biggest fans" and included the sentence "I just don't understand what Paulie has done for people to not be eternally happy about him". I think that responding negatively to that is perfectly fair as that's pretty far from any reasonable middle ground. Ok, I still disagree. Usually the saying I'm not one of his biggest fans means you aren't a fan of his. You should also be happy with his career here. Was it all great, no. But few careers are. The whole of his career should have any White Sox fan, happy he was here and should be a fan of his.
  4. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Aug 10, 2014 -> 01:12 PM) Why can't there be an in-between ground between lionizing him as a veritable deity like one particular poster in this thread and "not being a fan of him and his career"? He shouldn't be on this team this year and he's been in the way for the last 2.5 years. As much as anyone, his falling apart with the bat in 2012 was absolutely key to that team missing the playoffs, and he's been paid a lot for the privilege. He had a couple rough years early in his career, had a great peak, was a key to both the 05 and 08 playoff runs, but in hindsight the White Sox would have been better off not signing him to either of his last 2 contracts. I thought the question was if you you a fan of his not whether he was the best player in baseball?. I thought that was a middle ground. Has he been bad lately, yes. Am I still a fan of his because of his career, yes.
  5. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Aug 10, 2014 -> 01:00 PM) He has been incredibly disappointing for the past 2.5 seasons, literally costing the team a chance at a playoff birth in the first of those, while being paid well over $20 million for the privilege of being really bad over that time period. That makes you not a fan of him and his career. It happens to almost all players in their twilight years. His entire career as a White Sox player with all the good he has done means nothing?
  6. QUOTE (Rowand44 @ Aug 10, 2014 -> 11:45 AM) Steve Trout is a baller. His nickname wasn't "nose candy" for nothing.
  7. QUOTE (Andy the Clown @ Aug 10, 2014 -> 09:47 AM) Fixed it for you. It's amazing how much you hate a guy for getting hurt.
  8. QUOTE (daa84 @ Aug 10, 2014 -> 11:23 AM) I can't believe anyone thinks tony truly didn't see him and has zero culpability here. I'm certainly now a lawyer, and I'm even less of a nascar/racing fan, but assuming he miraculously avoids legal trouble, who will continue to sponsor this fool? The days of Ray Lewis getting away with things are over, and it's a new era with social media/ news coverage Fans and owners are still the same, however. As long as he wins, he will remain. Fans have always put up with criminals and a$$holes as long as they help the team win. Many people are fans of guys like Stewart because "he does what he wants, speaks the truth and does what he wants."
  9. QUOTE (Athomeboy_2000 @ Aug 10, 2014 -> 10:25 AM) the general rule is you stay in your car until a safety team arrives. It wasnt on fire, or in immanent danger. True but it happens. I was working an Indy 500 race in the 90's when Nigel Mansell a career F1 racer though he was unfairly pushed into the wall. He got out of his car and walked to the middle of the track and waited until the driver he though was at fault to come by and he gave him the double bird before walking the rest of the way of the track.
  10. QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Aug 10, 2014 -> 09:41 AM) I'm telling you that the situations aren't even close to comparable. And I am also telling you that Tony Stewart has a bad reputation anyways Tony Stewart makes Barry Bonds look cuddly and fun. I have no doubt that Stewart was trying to go at the guy because he walked out on the track to yell at him. Tony is so arrogant he though he could fish tail at him to throw dirt at him without hitting him. His arrogance will finally cost him big time.
  11. QUOTE (greg775 @ Aug 9, 2014 -> 12:23 PM) Another jogging mishap. Hopefully minor. My shin and foot felt fine yesterday, however, felt a tinge in my hamstring near the end of a great speed walk with some jogging and sprints at the end. I stopped immediately and iced it. Today the hammy is a bit sore, just enough to know I did something and almost did something bad. I'm not limping. It's just a bit sore back there. Happened Friday. Do I walk again Monday after resting it? Do I stretch? Do not stretch. The trauma will just last longer. I would walk again and see how it feels. Do not do the jog and sprints until Wednesday and then only the jog. Give it at least 7 to 10 days before light sprints. Icing is always good for about 20 to 30 minutes. No more because then it actually starts to reverse the benfits.
  12. QUOTE (greg775 @ Aug 9, 2014 -> 01:14 PM) Not to hijack the thread, but this is Dunn's farewell tour, too. I notice in the Wilkins thread, a lot of people still think some team is going to acquire Dunn for the stretch run. Looking at his splits and his stats, he also looks like a guy, just like Paulie, who is finished and I dispel any thought he'll be joining a contender. Adam can't hit a lefty just like Paulie can't hit a righty and like Paulie, he can't run either. I think Dunn will retire after this season. Dunn will play somewhere next year. Konerko will not.
  13. QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Aug 9, 2014 -> 12:42 PM) By all accounts Wilkins will do the exact same. I was actually against the Konerko signing from day one, usually don't care for the nostalgic stuff. At this point though, if he's not blocking anyone important and Dunn doesn't need to be showcased, let him have a few last games in the lineup, maybe he'll have a special moment to remember. He has never at an MLB at bat. There is no "by all accounts" They should never take a players with no MLB experience and make him a pinch hitter, if they think he has any talent.
  14. QUOTE (Quinarvy @ Aug 8, 2014 -> 08:18 PM) Because I'm injury prone. Nearly tore my ACL landing awkwardly. EMT checked it out and said no tears and I have most of my range of motion back. Anything I should do while I wait for the swelling to go down? No. The swelling will inhibit normal muscle function. Just keep working on the range until the swelling is down.
  15. QUOTE (IlliniKrush @ Aug 8, 2014 -> 10:58 AM) Show progress for what and to who? This isn't for the fans. If it was for fans, they would have never started the rebuild. This is to get Baez more experience and break him in with a couple months. Again, they will have money to sign pitchers and they have so many assets that they could also trade for pitching. I don't think they are going for it in 2015, which is why they moved him. All these guys aren't going to be in the lineup to start next year, but could be scattered as the year goes on. They got more assets for a piece they weren't going to compete with next year, and either weren't going to re-sign or could sign after 2015 anyway. for themselves mostly. I think they need to start to see some progress in their plans. Until now there really hasn't been any. Of course, it is to have Baez get experience. That is the progress they need to see. Also they need to show other teams that they have some pieces to trade, if that is the way they are going to acquire pitching. They will have money to sign pitchers, but is that really the way to go? How often do the maegcontracts to FA pitchers work? The Cubs will need not just one but multiple pitchers, if they don't trade some of the prospects.
  16. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Aug 7, 2014 -> 11:41 AM) Let's hope Rodon can follow this path as well to avoid undue wear and tear from the slider torque. There is no inherent wear and tear from the slider. It's when they alter the pitch to increase it's movement that the trouble begins. It's just like the fastball. If you try to throw it as hard as you can every pitch, you will break down. If you throw as it's supposed to be thrown, there is no "extra" wear and tear. Only the unnatural motion of the over head throw.
  17. QUOTE (IlliniKrush @ Aug 8, 2014 -> 10:13 AM) Agreed. Now that Baez hasn't fallen flat on his face in the first few games (he will struggle mightily at some point the rest of the way), the "I told you this rebuild would never work!" posts are on hold. With the sheer number of prospects they have, not all of them will work out, but they don't have to. They can trade some, they make a signing or two. A few of them hit, and they are going to be in great shape. Unfortunately they just aren't as far away as we'd all like to think. I would disagree. I think they are starting to get worried about the lack of pitching and need to start bringing selected players up to show there is some progress. They are going to need the young hitters to produce because they are going to need to spend 100's of millions on pitching to be competitive.
  18. QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Aug 8, 2014 -> 10:24 AM) I assume the waiver sheet looks something like this Philadelphia Ryan Howard Chase Utley Cole Hamels Red Sox Clay Buchholz Jonny Gomes White Sox Bullpen Teams aren't that specific. They generally put more than half the team through waivers in an attempt to "sneak" players through. They do this because teams have a limited amount of time and a limited number of players that they claim. The GM needs to look through all of the teams and the players to decide who to claim and don't know until later if the claim was awarded so it is a complicated decision.
  19. QUOTE (Jose Abreu @ Aug 7, 2014 -> 10:03 PM) Do all catchers alter their fingernails? I've never really noticed it. Many do. It depends on the pitcher and what he wants.
  20. QUOTE (Jose Abreu @ Aug 7, 2014 -> 10:00 PM) They're painted so the pitcher can see the sign, right? They are probably stickers. There is a company selling little sticky note type stickers shaped like finger nails so they don't need to paint them.
  21. QUOTE (greg775 @ Aug 7, 2014 -> 03:16 PM) Near the kneecap. Also the area at the bottom of the tibia gets tight sometimes when jogging. It almost feels like it's going to snap. Is that a stretching issue? There two things it could be. The is a piece of capsule called a plica that can get caught under the patella to make it feel like it wants to snap. To determine this feels where its gets sore and is there a palpable mass there. If so you need to massage on the area a couple of times per day to decrease the inflammation. Most likely it is a patella femoral dysfunction. This is where the knee cap is riding too far inward which is why you get the pain on the inside of each knee. To decrease this problem you need to watch your form when running and do a few exercises. When jogging be sure to keep your knees over feet. Some people will bring their knees inward in a knock kneed direction. This puts a great deal of added stress in the area. The exercises are wall squats with your knees staying over your feet. Lean your back against a wall. Slide down so your knees bend but not to the point of any pain. Keep your knees in line with your feet and hold a position for 10 secs. Do 10 or so 2x/day. The others are clam exercises. Lay on one side with your knees bent 1/2 way. Get either a rubber band or ankle weight and put it around your leg just above the knee Keep your feet together and lift the top knee away from the other. This will be like pivoting with your hip and ankles with the knee raising up. Do 15-20 on each side daily. This will help to re-train the muscles to have the knee cap track properly.
  22. QUOTE (CanOfCorn @ Aug 7, 2014 -> 03:27 PM) I have a pain right under my left kneecap. It hurts after playing volleyball (which I've stopped) and if it's bent for extended periods of time. Then it aches. I think it's tendonitis...but I'm not sure what to do about it since I've been resting it for months. It is not swollen, so I don't think there's any physical damage, so any help would be great. Thanks! Sounds more like patella femoral pain syndrome. Put your hand on the very top of your knee cap and push it down toward your ankle. Once it is in this position try to tighten your quad. Your hand should be resisting the knee cap from coming back up. How did that feel?

QUOTE (scs787 @ Aug 7, 2014 -> 05:10 PM) But what if they had a bunch of Chris Sales? Not very realistic. What if the opposing team had all miguel cabreras?
  24. QUOTE (Buehrle>Wood @ Aug 6, 2014 -> 03:54 PM) He can't. The Sox know this. I've thought he has looked pretty good defensively at a few positions. I think you think they know this. I'm not too sure that they think it yet. We'll know this off season.
  25. QUOTE (Buehrle>Wood @ Aug 6, 2014 -> 03:51 PM) Why do we have to have him save a spot, again? This is a rebuilding/retooling year. The Sox want to see if he could handle it for next year or further in the future. That's really what they are doing with most everyone on the team.
