QUOTE (Chicago White Sox @ Jan 14, 2016 -> 07:35 PM) But with an AAV of $18M or less? We're talking about a guy with a 3 WAR floor if he's not forced to play CF. I get his 2015 was an outlier, but the hypothetical Baltimore deal isn't paying him to be a 6+ WAR player, it's paying him to be a 2 to 2.5 WAR player. Honestly, at that price who cares about a 5th year. I still worry about long term payroll flexibility. The 5th year would just hamper the team too much to maintain longterm competiveness with sale and company hittng FA at that time. I would rather spend the money on homegrown pitching.

QUOTE (Chicago White Sox @ Jan 14, 2016 -> 06:27 PM) I will say this, if the Orioles land Cespedes for a contract in that range, then I'm going to f***ing enraged. I think a 5 year deal would be a mistake for a player that inconsistent.

QUOTE (OmarComing25 @ Jan 14, 2016 -> 04:37 PM) I don't understand it fully, but here's Dave Cameron's explanation: http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/position-adjustments/ So is he saying that 10 runs equals one win. If the difference from a catcher to a DH is 30 runs and it's 3 wins? Did they decide the 17.5 penalty for not being on the field is that the DH will contribute 1.75 less wins because he is not on the field helping? Other than just making the math fit the model, this is what he seems to be saying.

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jan 14, 2016 -> 04:33 PM) If there was ever going to be a time for the White Sox to spend big on a free agent...it's here and now. If not now, when exactly? When JR hist the 1.6 billion lottery?

QUOTE (OmarComing25 @ Jan 14, 2016 -> 04:25 PM) It's the positional adjustments. Every 1B starts off with -12.5 runs on defense, so Rizzo at -8.9 means he rated out positively for the position. I believe these are the adjustments, but many say they are too extreme (which means C, SS, 2B and 3B might be overvalued, while LF, RF, 1B and DH are undervalued): Catcher: +12.5 runs (all are per 162 defensive games) Shortstop: +7.5 runs Second Base: +2.5 runs Third Base: +2.5 runs Center Field: +2.5 runs Left Field: -7.5 runs Right Field: -7.5 runs First Base: -12.5 runs Designated Hitter: -17.5 runs How can a DH cost you runs on defense? He isn't even out there. Someone must have done a retrospective study and came up with this number to make the math work.

QUOTE (bmags @ Jan 14, 2016 -> 04:24 PM) Who was the last cub hero we signed? Paul Assenmacher and Davey Martinez. Maybe Will Ohman?
-
QUOTE (bmags @ Jan 14, 2016 -> 03:16 PM) Absolutely not, there is no guarantee after an injury like that. He won't be ready for any of the combines. I would say it's too risky as well in the first round. After that, yes.

QUOTE (SoxPride18 @ Jan 14, 2016 -> 02:43 PM) Say we get Fowler for 3/40-45, and offered Cespedes 3/60, that money could go elsewhere in a starter or another trade for a need. I don't see anyway the Sox sign two players. They are stretching their budget from last year. I don't have any idea what their budget is but I don't think it will go up that much for non-super star type players.

QUOTE (Saufley @ Jan 13, 2016 -> 04:21 PM) With Farmer and DJ I have a problem following the play of the game. They wander and ramble on so much with stories that sometimes I don't know what is happening in the game. Sorry guys, you need to go IMO. I know I'm in the minority but I think the ramblings and such makes it fun and enjoyable. If all I wanted is to see the play and results, the mlb or yahoo apps will tell you that. I listen to the radio to enjoy it

QUOTE (HickoryHuskers @ Jan 13, 2016 -> 03:19 PM) Interesting question that got posed to me on another board: Suppose that none of the following things existed: GPS; maps (paper or online); any highway signs (route numbers, road names, exit signs, mile markers, directional signs); any signs bearing the name of any state, county or city; billboards Without all of the above things, and without the ability to ask anybody for any help, what is the farthest specific point from your home that you are confident you could drive to without making any wrong turns? Assume you can split up the trip so that you are always driving in daylight if that helps. I think I could make it to a point in Wisconsin about 700 miles from home. New Orleans. Go west until you hit the big river. Turn left, keeping the river on your right, and go until you hit a really big body of water (not the floods near st. Louis).

QUOTE (oldsox @ Jan 13, 2016 -> 07:17 AM) He's 18. How many ground balls and throws in the dirt will he take in next 3 years? How good were guys like Konerko and Thome at fielding when they were 18? In order to improve a lot, you need lots of room for improvement. If he hits this year, he will be a great prospect. At 18 Konerko was a catcher and Thome was a 3B. Both were pretty good.

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jan 13, 2016 -> 03:36 AM) Someone was inquiring about the salary expectations...basically Fowler and Jackson for 15-25% less than Upton or Cespedes per year and likely a shorter commitment in terms of years. True. But they will not save money as one of them would be a high priced bench player. It would be more cost effective to sign one and use a rookie as the bench player.

QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Jan 12, 2016 -> 07:22 PM) Makes absolute sense. Privately funded deal. I understand why Chargers wanted Raiders though, public market studies indicate Chargers would be the preferred LA team in a scenario where you had Chargers / Raiders. Rams are top preferred team (by a pretty large margin) when they are here (no idea why this is the case cause the Rams were never talked about positively when I was a kid). Presuming economics work in favor of Chargers having 50/50 control with Kroenke, I would think that alleviates some of the concerns over revenue sharing. The funny part will be what happens to Spanos after Raiders eventually move to San Diego in future, LOL. The NFL also prefers an AFC/NFC combo to share a market to draw league wide interest.

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jan 13, 2016 -> 02:03 AM) Fowler around $12-14 million per season and Jackson looking at $7-9 million, $21 million's on the lower end of the spectrum of the AAV Upton or Cespedes would realistically receive on short-term deals. But then that lost draft pick for Fowler's currently being assessed at $10-12 million in foregone short/long-term value as well. They are only replacing Garcia. They are not signing or trading for 2 OFs.

QUOTE (Saufley @ Jan 12, 2016 -> 03:59 PM) So who in the FO takes the blame on saying yes let's get this guy? RH? The FO made the trade so blame it on the the FO. What differnce is it if it was RH, KW or JR. This was the consensus trade. None of them work by themselves.

QUOTE (SCCWS @ Jan 12, 2016 -> 08:58 AM) Sometimes a player wears out his welcome with an organization. Not saying that is the caee, but I think you are overreacting to their lack of interest. The same Red flag would appear w Cespedes. Boston quickly moved him and he had some problems w a a coach in his brief stay. Could also be a red flag but just might have been a poor marriage. AJ had history but he certainly was well respected w the White Sox. There are very few that could even tolerate AJ, except Hawk of course.

QUOTE (bmags @ Jan 11, 2016 -> 02:04 PM) Sub-question: What movies have you seen the most in your lifetime? My wife asked me this and I think the answer is office space. I'm pretty sure when I was in high school I'd come home from school and it was on comedy central like every day...and I watched it. I didn't think about ones I had to sit through with the kids or ones that were "babysitting" the kids while I worked on my dissertation/homework. I would need to include: Cinderella Veggie Tales Aladdin Toy Story Independence Day Scooby Doo

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jan 11, 2016 -> 02:21 PM) Some combination of Office Space, Blazing Saddles, War of the Worlds, Star Wars, and Back to the Future. Blazing saddles, star wars, stripes, back to the future, indiana jones, big troubles in little china.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jan 10, 2016 -> 12:34 PM) The Jones flag came out when there was a crowd of like 7 Bengals around 1-2 of the refs yelling at the refs and someone, I think Jones, pushed the ref. Clearly was a bump or shove or something, enough for the ref to clearly be pushed backwards, and then the flag came out. Doesn't matter how mad you are about a call. You don't touch the zebras. You're wearing a huge amount of protective equipment and you're an athlete, they're guys trying to do their job. He had a point, it's unusual for an assistant coach to be out on the field. But that's not a penalty afaik, and you don't respond to that by pushing a ref. +1000

QUOTE (Chilihead90 @ Jan 10, 2016 -> 01:33 AM) I give the wRC+ the most weight (no pun intended) when I am comparing the offensive merits of a player. The pitching equivalent being B/R's ERA+, for me. For pitching SIERA is the best. For overall I'm going with team wins.

QUOTE (whitesoxfan99 @ Jan 10, 2016 -> 12:03 AM) Yikes, James Harrison says he didn't think Burfict's hit on Brown should have been a penalty. Look at the source. With his history he's nearly as bad. But to be fair he did say according to the rules and his discussions during his fines, it is an illegal hit. He just doesn't agree with the rule.
-
QUOTE (whitesoxfan99 @ Jan 9, 2016 -> 11:42 PM) You know what I actually agree with this. Both are really dirty plays, Burfict's was more malicious. I don't believe I said Shazier's hit was really dirty. He lowered his head during a tackle. I would call it illegal but not "really dirty." He'll get a fine. Burfect will get a suspension.
-
QUOTE (whitesoxfan99 @ Jan 9, 2016 -> 11:39 PM) Except the announcers and Mike Carey defended the hit and called it legal when it was clearly not legal. OK. He hit him in the head so he'll get a fine.
-
QUOTE (whitesoxfan99 @ Jan 9, 2016 -> 11:24 PM) For the record, I don't have a problem with criticizing Burfict as his dirty hits date back to college and I remember one against Illinois in the last game I actually went to in Champaign but it was a ridiculous juxtaposition where they were defending a clearly illegal and dirty hit by Shazier and then going out of their way to find something wrong with Burfict's hit which was clearly clean. I also really hate Ben Roethlisberger as a person and I can't stand the love he gets from announcers as a result so their treatment of those two plays bothered the hell out of me. Shazier's hit was illegal but it was during a play and those happen. I imagine he will get a fine. Burfect's hit on Ben was legal but they've called penalties before on "landing on" the qb to drive him in the ground. It sounds like you've got something against Rothlisberger which is fine but again when you see the things that Burfect does, I can understand why the announcers talk about him the way they do.

QUOTE (ChiSoxFanMike @ Jan 9, 2016 -> 11:22 PM) I honestly wouldn't be surprised to see the NFL fold at some point in our lifetimes. Between the increasing injury risks, the lack of competency within the officiating group, concussions, the poorer quality of play within the last few years, etc, the NFL is not in good shape IMO. This will never happen. Far too much money involved and it's still the most popular sport.
