QUOTE (thxfrthmmrs @ Aug 30, 2012 -> 10:39 AM) I am sorry, but most of the daily prospection evaluations on this board is done through numbers. Why are you suggesting something here that no one has information on? Unless you are a scout or you watch all of Thompson's games, you wouldn't know "how ready he looks." Everyone who knows a thing about baseball knows that scouting in person is better than scouting by numbers, I don't think you need to tell me that. But the closest thing we have to scouting is how players make adjustment at a new level. Thompson's last 5 games suggests that Double A pitchers have made adjustments to him, but he hasn't made adjustments yet to the pitching. And yes, I, along with most other posters, am aware that this is a move for Thompson to get more playing time and playoff experience. That's why I said this isn't a long term promotion. Now begins the next war of the old time scouts vs. SABRmetrics people.

QUOTE (GoodAsGould @ Aug 29, 2012 -> 03:30 PM) Baseball has the least amount of teams in the playoffs, I don't understand how you say too many teams.... The problem is baseball isn't as fun to watch as the other sports and it's as simple as that. This may be part of it but a larger part is that it's the most difficult team to bet and a play fantasy sports with. The NFL has an easy betting line and with games on no more than 3 nights a week (usually 2) it lends itself to the fantasy aspect.

Stripes: We're going to Czechoslavikia not Moscow. It's like going to Wisconsin. I got my a$$ kicked in Wisconsin once.

QUOTE (Spiritinthesky @ Aug 27, 2012 -> 08:21 AM) Some people believe our lives are profoundly influenced by whatever pop song was #1 on the day we were born. US: Light My Fire: The Doors UK and Australia: All You Need is Love: The Beatles It's going to take me awhile to process this one.

QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Aug 26, 2012 -> 08:52 PM) It's legit, he had a solid 2nd inning. It's the same elbow that had a tendinitis issue in July. this is turning out like Danks. We now know the reaso. he has been pitching poorly.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Aug 24, 2012 -> 11:27 AM) He got a lot more consistent as he got older. His walk totals really dropped as he aged, which is when the wins started coming. His walk rates fell by about half during his career, and his K rates stayed pretty similar. I wouldn't have wanted the 1970's Ryan starting for me in the World Series game 7, but the 80's version should could have. He also played on some pretty bad teams along the way. True, he did become a better pitcher after 10 years in the league but for his career his average season was a 14-12 record and he was really never even considered for a Cy Young. As stated, he really wasn't a winning pitcher. Great and dominating stuff but not necessarily a pitcher.
-
QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Aug 23, 2012 -> 09:34 PM) Yeah, there's that. Although, to be fair, he never gets thought of as a "winning pitcher." When you think of all the arms in history you'd want for the 7th game of the World Series, would you even put him into your Top 10 possibilities? He wasn't. He was a guy who had great stuff but was far too inconsistent. He was great one start and awful the next. He could throw a no-hitter one game then walk 9 the next.

Bowden/Law/Olney rank Sox 21st in Future Power Ratings

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Aug 23, 2012 -> 11:15 PM) That's true...if you look at all those pitchers who come straight over the top, most of them succumb to injury sooner or later. PTAC might be able to support this, but I remember reading once where the shoulder is not meant to take the strain of that motion and that pitching from a 75 degree angle, parallel to the ground or Bradford-style is actually healthier for the shoulder and elbow, ceteris paribus. His arm slot was never an issue. I'm not sure why Schilling even mentioned it other tham to talk about a good pitcher. LHP typically do have a lower arm slot than RHP. The issue with Sale is how he gets there. He really flexes his elbow then quickly whips his shoulder into external rotation. Then he needs to quickly extend his elbow to get it in a good position. The issue was and will be can he continue to do all of this motion in the really short period of time, especially when fatigued. If he can't do all of this he will begin to put a great deal of stress on either his shoulder or elbow. If his case my guess would be the elbow. Hopefully, he really continues to work on conditioning and he can keep the majority of the stress on his lower extremities and spine where it should be. -
QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Aug 23, 2012 -> 02:36 PM) When you have three superstars, you can get away with it...and that payroll. They still don't know how long Cabrera's going to be out with that ankle injury, either. It could be they win the battle today but lose the war. We've got a "budding" or baby superstar in Sale, but there's not much evidence that there's a huge upturn in home crowds when he pitches, like Greinke in KC, Halladay in Toronto, Verlander in Detroit, etc. Some of this is a mind set. Are you a fan of a player or two or the team. I'm not sure that everyone will go just to see the player believe it or not many fans go to see the team win or lose.
-
QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Aug 23, 2012 -> 02:27 PM) Tigers are just amazingly tough to beat at home with those crowds. It's the advantage they're always going to have over us with dynamic pricing. The Tigers have certain games that they call "premium games" that they charge more for as well.

QUOTE (flavum @ Aug 23, 2012 -> 02:23 PM) Tied on a wild pitch. Nice going, Oliver. Relievers are insignificant compared to starters and you can easily find them anywhere.

QUOTE (ChiSox_Sonix @ Aug 23, 2012 -> 12:05 PM) Fine the team an equivalent amount to what the player loses due to his suspension? Maybe the team luxury tax threshold gets lowered by this amount.

QUOTE (flavum @ Aug 22, 2012 -> 10:21 PM) She wasn't in the olympics. Michelle Jenneke. She's a healthy girl. She is one of the top hurdlers at the junior olympics. She has a shot for the games in Rio.

QUOTE (GoodAsGould @ Aug 22, 2012 -> 10:57 PM) So your screwing a franchise and 24 other people for the act of one person. They should just make it a full season ban, at least for major leaguers. It would make the teams more vigilant and keep them from ignoring the issue. As stated the union would not agree to it but it may be the only way to truly stop it. Maybe there could be a clause in every contract: test positive for PEDs and your entire contract is void and the player must repay the team for what they have been paid.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Aug 21, 2012 -> 10:41 AM) http://chicago.whitesox.mlb.com/news/artic...s#disqus_thread The title of the article is misleading. The rehab isn't slow. He's is still in the healing phase, so this is the slow portion of the rehab process where he needs to rest.

I never realized something about the early 90s Sox

QUOTE (CanOfCorn @ Aug 16, 2012 -> 02:25 PM) Don't you DARE mock those 80's teams of Carlos Martinez, Dan Pasqua, Joel Skinner, Scott Fletcher, Steve Sax...BWAHAHAHA... Crap, almost made it through without laughing. You forgot the leader of the group and one of my all time favorites. The IVAN CALDERON (RIP). -
QUOTE (ptatc @ Jul 5, 2012 -> 10:07 PM) Don't count out Gatlin. He was awesome in Eugene. The USA has a chance to get 30+ medals with a talented Track team. I was close. USA had 29 track and field medals most in a long time. If Meb has a better kick or Hall doesn't drop out of the marathon, they would have hit 30. The women were better than the men as well.

QUOTE (RockRaines @ Aug 15, 2012 -> 11:33 AM) I wear a knee brace after my MCL injury. And its 100% so I dont hyperextend it because it hurts like a motherf***er when that happens. The is true for the MCL. The medial meniscus has a connection to the MCL so the injuries do frequently occur together. That really isn't much of a problem. It's the PCL that will cause the problems if it was stretched or torn too much. If it's healed he shouldn't have any more problems.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Aug 15, 2012 -> 08:22 AM) Link Swiping this from Talkbears: Will now await Pt telling me what's wrong with that description. Let's hope that's all it was. If that is it he will be ready and shouldn't have any further problems.

QUOTE (RockRaines @ Aug 14, 2012 -> 02:09 PM) That knee injury looked horrible when it happened and we were told it wasnt. Now its lingering into the season. Hmm. NIce work Bears. The bad sign is not the surgery itself. The really bad sign is that he tried to practice with a knee brace and could not. The only reason to wear a knee brace after MCL/PCL injuries is instability. If he felt his knee was unstable and the brace did not help, he could be in trouble. Unlike the ACL there is no good surgery to replace the PCL. It is in the back of the knee and they cannot develop a good surgery. This could be a recurring problem.

Former Major League ballplayer Jeff Kent will b on Survivor
ptatc replied to SouthsideDon48's topic in The Diamond Club
QUOTE (SouthsideDon48 @ Aug 14, 2012 -> 03:30 PM) According to my sources, Jeff Kent will be on Survivor. I hope he gets voted off early. If falling off a motorcycle while doing a wheeling is a criterion, he'll win. -
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Aug 14, 2012 -> 01:39 PM) So is it time to admit that regularly pushing Peavy past 75 pitches last year is paying dividends this year, just like Cooper said it would? Christopher Kamka @ckamka Peavy by pitch count: Pitch 1-75: .228... Pitch 76+ .226. Last season: .247/.320. What a difference. You mean building strength and stamina is a good thing? Huh, wouda thunk it.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Aug 14, 2012 -> 01:10 PM) The poker playing instead of working with the pitchers? Things along that line. There were a few that really didn't like him and tended to spread stories. Did he play poker. Yes, but in the clubhouse many do. Did he do it when he was supposed to be working with pitchers? That was the issue and there are people on both sides of it. From experience I would doubt it. He is one of the hardest working players in the league, both physically and studying hitters and pitchers.

QUOTE (greg775 @ Aug 13, 2012 -> 10:36 PM) I think so, because the only question with Robin (at least to me) was the question of whether being a color announcer at the Little League World Series would translate into being a big-league manager. He had absolutely no experience at all, aside from playing an easy, reaction position, third base for a long time and hitting at a high level for a long time. There was always the chance he could be a Bevington, a total clown in the dugout. However, he has proven he is no clown, he in fact is as good as any other manager in baseball. Let's face it, most of them make the same decisions over and over. You can second guess his use of certain relievers, but that goes with the territory. In most 3-to-5 run losses you can point to "mishandling" of the bullpen. Since he knows what he's doing, the only way he could get fired is to rub people the wrong way and there's been no evidence of any of that. The fact NO VETERANS on our team have had any hints of trouble with Robin prove he's a players' manager as well. I see him managing 20-25 years on the south side unless he decides it's too much travel and he wants to count his money for a few years and golf. If he does decide to quit at some point, I could see AJP getting the nod. Playing 3rd is easy? I wish I was as good of an athlete as you are if you consider it easy.
