QUOTE(nitetrain8601 @ Apr 4, 2005 -> 11:27 PM) On ESPN, they were talking about this and Digger Phelps said he would be surprised if it wasn't moved back by next year. I agree, it is too easy. LOL! They're going to move back the three-point line because it's "too easy" to make baskets??? Are they going to move the hoop up one foot as well because it's "too easy" to dunk? Yeah, that's exactly what we need: Less excitement in basketball. The scoring should be comparable to hockey. :rolly

QUOTE(LowerCaseRepublican @ Apr 4, 2005 -> 10:25 PM) Dee was high school NHS, Engram is an engineer and I believe Nick Smith is a grad student in either accounting or finance. So we've got some brains on our team. Dee's going to need that brain of his to make money because he's not going to do it via the NBA. Great college player, but too short for the pros.

There's no doubt that, regardless of who is in office now, the President would attend John Paul II's funeral for "political" reasons. That's a political reality that would apply to attending the funeral of any massive international figure. That said, I'm dismayed by the cynical attitude that Bush would only attend the funeral for political reasons. Bush is a devout Christian... why wouldn't he want to attend the funeral of, arguably, the most important and influential Christian of the 20th Century? (Apologies to MLK.) Hell, I'd bet that the vast majority of Christians here would be happy to take time out of their "busy schedule" to attend JP II's funeral (with the government taking care of food and travel expenses, of course).

QUOTE(Texsox @ Apr 4, 2005 -> 10:34 AM) Down here damn near every new home has an electronic security system installed. Maybe that has something to do with all of the illegals in southern Texas? Seriously, though, I don't know of many people who have home security systems where I live (Indiana).

QUOTE(Texsox @ Apr 4, 2005 -> 12:12 PM) A terrorist would have decent financial backing and would arrive in an airplane, not by walking two weeks through desert and risking their lives before their mission. Not sure I agree with that. It's a hell of a lot easier to sneak across the border than to get through airport security with a bomb in one's briefcase. And I don't think that "risking their lives" is much of a concern to terrorist "martyrs."

QUOTE(Texsox @ Apr 4, 2005 -> 12:00 PM) The first American President to attend a Papal funeral. After what John Paul II did to help bring down Communism, it's the very least that our country can do in return.

QUOTE(Kid Gleason @ Apr 4, 2005 -> 11:43 AM) Ummmm...Morrison is kind of...ummmm...dead. Though the BBC might be looking for an interview, he is surely dead. DOH! :banghead

QUOTE(winodj @ Apr 4, 2005 -> 11:44 AM) You're complaining about a problem that your party refuses to fix. Instead of saying "Oh, good point." or disagreeing for a vaild reason, you just point a finger and bleat out "Clinton." I've already admitted that "my party" refuses to fix it (technically, I'm an Independent). But, for some reason, YOU can't bring yourself to admit that YOUR party did nothing about it, either. What's the point of me voting "my party" out of office if YOUR party will do the same thing? Your "suggestion" is nothing more than partisan bulls***.

QUOTE(Texsox @ Apr 4, 2005 -> 11:12 AM) My guess is the Vatican doesn't have the resources to check who should be attending from every country. So maybe they make X numbers of invites available to each country?? I am assuming the US Government will tell the Vatican who will be representing the US along with Dubya. That makes sense. I wouldn't be surprised if neither Clinton nor H. W. Bush attended. Neither were particularly close to the Pope when they served. Carter might actually be a better choice.

QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Feb 23, 2005 -> 08:53 PM) And after the tragic death of John Lennon and Kurt Kobain, I don't know that there is a lyricisit alive who owns the right to say that like Dylan. I can name quite a few: Paul McCartney, Robert Plant, Jim Morrison, Clapton, Springsteen, Bono, etc. Dylan was an incredible songwriter. But I'm not sure that someone with his voice is in much of a position to be casting stones.

QUOTE(YASNY @ Apr 4, 2005 -> 08:50 AM) The only thing "royal" about the royals is that they are a royally screwed up bunch of people.

QUOTE(Texsox @ Apr 4, 2005 -> 10:22 AM) I was reading that the White House was finalizing the list of governement officials who would be attending the Pope's funeral and it was mentioned they were not certain of ex-Pres Clinton and Bush's attendance and it sounded like the WH has the call. Can the White House control the Ex-President's schedules and what events they attend? Could Bush forbid his Dad from attending? Interesting. I thought that the Vatican would have final say, as the funeral really has nothing to do with the White House.

It's kind of difficult to change a wedding date, so I wouldn't hold it againt them. What I would hold against them is the fact that Charles slept with her while he was married to another woman. I wonder what he thinks about his own mother not attending his wedding?

QUOTE(KipWellsFan @ Apr 3, 2005 -> 11:51 PM) Man I'm a total spammer. You took the words right out of my mouth.

QUOTE(LowerCaseRepublican @ Apr 3, 2005 -> 11:27 PM) What? No foaming at the mouth of a rampant anti-Canadian bias? I love hackery of "Sure, our country may have a government of corrupt, amoral pricks for leaders but you've got some too so that means ours are somehow absolved!" One can condemn all corruption there *cough Evil Monkey cough* without taking sides due to simple geographic location. I've just discovered LCR's identity... "Guns don't kill people. The government does!"
-
QUOTE(KipWellsFan @ Apr 3, 2005 -> 11:29 PM) Because I think the current administration is leading the free world, what they claim to lead, down a s***ty path. And your plan to change that is to make all Americans hate Canadians? Wow, you're brilliant! That's a complete bulls*** excuse. Why not bring some of these problems up in your posts? Why wouldn't Americans (especially the politically-savvy ones on this board) care about what goes on in the country directly north of us? Of course we would. You're full of s***.

QUOTE(LowerCaseRepublican @ Apr 3, 2005 -> 11:21 PM) Posting articles regarding the failings of American policy isn't insulting to the American people -- Generally, no. But when one posts nothing but topics that portray another's country negatively, citizens of said country sense bias and take offense. What did I just say a few minutes ago? QUOTE(TheBigHurt35 @ Apr 3, 2005 -> 11:18 PM) Perhaps he did. That doesn't sound like I "find nothing wrong" with his posts, does it? :rolly

QUOTE(KipWellsFan @ Apr 3, 2005 -> 11:21 PM) See here's the fundamental mistake you are making. I'm not going out of my way to insult Americans. Then, tell me, why do nearly all of your posts portray our government negatively? Why do I not see any posts from you that, say, point out problems in Canada's government? Or any other government, for that matter?
-
QUOTE(LowerCaseRepublican @ Apr 3, 2005 -> 11:16 PM) Cuz I'm sure EvilMonkey didn't look like an ignorant jackass at all, right? :rolly Perhaps he did. Then again, he doesn't go out of his way to insult Canadians.

QUOTE(KipWellsFan @ Apr 3, 2005 -> 10:32 PM) I'm at a loss for words. I think for the first time in my approximate 3-4 years hear my feelings have actually been hurt on a message board Of course, your "interests" almost exclusively revolve around news that attempts to undermine the U.S. government. And, for some reason, you just can't understand why American citizens take offense to that. Nobody here is interested in banning you. Calling out your anti-American bias and making you look like a complete ass is infinitely more gratifying.

QUOTE(Texsox @ Apr 3, 2005 -> 07:15 PM) Because our politicians no longer have the courage to raise taxes to pay for wars. Instead they continue to increase our national debt and stay in power. Republicans use to be for fiscal responsibility and painted Democrats as "tax and spend". Now the Republicans have become the "spend and don't tax" party. They keep telling us someone else will be paying for this stuff tomorrow that they are giving us today. Who can say no to a free lunch? I agree that may become a problem if Iraq turns into Vietnam-esque (12-year) campaign. I'd like to see us begin to pull troops out within the next year. Hopefully the new Iraqi government and police/military will have begun to develop into effective units by that time.

QUOTE(EvilMonkey @ Apr 3, 2005 -> 08:57 PM) It's called bias, you dumbass. And I am exercising my free speech right to tell you that I think you are an ass, and I feel personally offended that an outsider like you constantly criticizes the US. "I'm just posting information". BULLs***! You must troll CNN, Yahoo News and all these others just looking for crap to post. Are you just a post-whore, trying to get your post count up? Don't start threads that often? In the last 2 weeks, I have 8 that have topics that seem just a little bit on the negative side. Oh, wait, you are just 'noting' a problem. You started posts on: Iraq inten 'dead wrong' 59 ex-us diplomats oppose Bolton No proof Anan knew of Deal Bid HS shooting in Red Lake, MN Sanctions preferred in Oil for Food corruption US Army releases details in 27 detainee deaths 20 amazing facts about voting in the US, and, of course, this thread. SHUT UP you whiny little Canadian prick. And yes, my replies are very tactless, and to the point, so maybe it can get thru your touque and into that syrup-addled brain of your that alot of people here are sick of your constant US bashing. And despite the anticipated defense you will now get from 3 or 4 posters, there are many here that want to say exactally what I did, but maybe have a bit more tact. I think I'll go over to a Real Madrid message board and criticize Spanish domestic and foreign policy until I develop Carpal Tunnel Syndrome. And when they criticize my overt anti-Spanish bias and general lack of tact, I'll call them fascist pigs who oppose my right to free speech. I'm sure that my behavior will reflect well on my fellow Americans. :rolly

QUOTE(KipWellsFan @ Apr 3, 2005 -> 01:29 PM) Hahaha. Instead of insulting my intelligence you should stick to the penis jokes. I don't believe that there's any further need to point out your massive inferiority complex. Enjoy your maple syrup and high taxes. QUOTE(Texsox @ Apr 3, 2005 -> 05:10 PM) Yes, Iraq under Hussein used the death penalty. Interesting that among civilized countries we are in the minority using the death penalty. Most countries find us barbaric in that regard. We found someone even more extreme than us. So . . . Any government which kills more people or for less of a reason is evil and anyone who uses the death penalty less than us or not at all, is a weak liberal country. I do not believe any country has a moral obligation to bankrupt their nation to save another. The most absurd part of the Iraq War is that we are borrowing hundreds of billions of dollars every year. Much of this money is coming from countries which refused to join us in Iraq. :headshake We now know our intelligence was wrong about other things, could it be that Iraq was not executing or torturing as many people as our government claimed? I don't see how Saddam's use of sarin to indiscriminately kill large groups of his own people is in any way remotely comparable to our use of the death penalty (which occurs after due process and is illegal in many states anyway). What do you suppose Iraq's criminal justice system is like? A Law & Order episode? :rolly And, FWIW, I don't support the death penalty either. I agree that we don't have a moral obligation to "bankrupt" our nation to save another, but I don't see that happening in this case. Did our nation go "bankrupt" after Korea, Vietnam, or the Persian Gulf War? Why would it happen now?

QUOTE(Texsox @ Apr 3, 2005 -> 10:38 AM) I didn't expect an answer. Sorry, I can't read your mind. Point taken. I seem to remember you complaining that the American policy towards Mexican "visitors" is discriminatory because Mexicans typically can't afford to apply for visas, but perhaps I took that out of context.
