  1. QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Apr 6, 2005 -> 02:23 PM) As of the start of spring training Boyer was quoted as saying they had sold their 1 millionth ticket, where as they had only sold about 800,000 at that time in 2004. Nice to know that they're on a rebound, but they still have a ways to go.
  2. QUOTE(Queen Prawn @ Apr 6, 2005 -> 02:18 PM) That's it. The next MFer that hits a pop up needs to do 50 push ups at home plate. That'll learn 'em! Hey, if it got Willie Mays Hayes a pennant, maybe it'll work for Dye!
  3. QUOTE(winodj @ Apr 6, 2005 -> 01:58 PM) And by that you mean, our owner has a face that fans can identify when they need a reason to show that the ownership is not committed to winning. Like the Cubs had been real aggressive at getting the postseason in the 90s. What did all their fans do, buy the Sun Times? No, that's not what I mean. Whether the owner is a single person, the chariman of a board (as is the case with us), or a national media conglomerate, fans are going to boycott when said owner pulls the plug on two competitive teams down the stretch not once, but TWICE.
  4. QUOTE(winodj @ Apr 6, 2005 -> 01:49 PM) The Cubs have one of the most revered ballparks in the majors, a neighborhood that people actually think is nice (despite the reality of the situation), and twenty years of good marketing. We have none of those things. We also have an idiot owner who lead a charge to force a strike in '94 while our team was in first place and who traded away our two best pitchers at the July 31st deadline three years later while we were 3 games out of first. That's the most significant factor, IMO.
  5. QUOTE(winodj @ Apr 6, 2005 -> 01:43 PM) Maybe if we had 26 championships and played a division rival who just won the World Series, we'd sell out that whole series too. The Cubs have neither and still have drawn 30,000+ on day games in April over the past few years. Not trying to play devil's advocate, but it's true. Reinsdorf really killed this team's fan base in '94.
  6. QUOTE(robinventura23 @ Apr 6, 2005 -> 12:59 PM) Blake K's. f***. We could have gotten out the inning with no damage. Why did he get the balk called on him? He stepped on the mound, got set, and then moved his front foot. You have to take your back foot off the rubber if you don't want to commit to the pitch.
  7. Nice balk there, Freddy. :headshake His command is poor today as well, but he's doing a decent job of getting himself out of jams. Quite a few Injuns in scoring position have been left on base.
  8. QUOTE(LosMediasBlancas @ Apr 6, 2005 -> 12:02 PM) Call me crazy, but I prefer the blue seats. It's gonna look drab when they're all green. Really? I think the dark green seats go better with the black roof and scaffolding. Just my personal preference, though. USCF is going to look incredibly nice once they finish installing the new seats this coming offseason.
  9. QUOTE(mreye @ Apr 6, 2005 -> 09:33 AM) ALL weddings have their own setbacks. It wouldn't be a wedding without it. The one thing that my wedding taught me is that you can't rely on other people to do things the way you want them done. If you want something done correctly, you need to do it yourself. Our incompetent photographer and DJ, however, did inadvertently give me incentive to make my marriage last, as there's absolutely no way that I'll go through this crap again.
  10. QUOTE(EvilJester99 @ Apr 6, 2005 -> 07:41 AM) Thats actually good news because as it stands with WMVP you can't hear them as it gets later due to them have a directional antenna and have to power down as it gets later...you head west and you can't hear s***... I don't know much about radio, but is that the norm? If not, why wouldn't they fix it? Any why do they have to power it down at night?
  11. QUOTE(tonyho7476 @ Apr 6, 2005 -> 09:00 AM) Sorry to hear you are too cool for this thread. We'll miss further input. :finger I was referring to the Star Wars geeks, brainiac.
  12. QUOTE(Queen Prawn @ Apr 6, 2005 -> 09:00 AM) So this is what I look forward to in a few months, huh? If you think that's irritating, wait until your photographer or DJ does or says something stupid on your wedding day (when you're going to be stressed out anyway). Our photographer (a stereotypical head-lodged-up-his-ass artist) had the audacity to ask my wife if she happened to remember how many rolls of film she requested in the contract (which he forgot to bring with him) right after we walked out of the church. And the second that we walked into the reception hall, the DJ informed me that he couldn't find the song that we wanted to be introduced to (you can download the Monday Night Football theme music off the web) and told us that we had to pick another one. I was ready to punch him and needed a glass of scotch to calm down.
  13. QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Apr 6, 2005 -> 08:25 AM) Jim Ryan's time is coming Wasn't Ryan involved in some scandal regarding driver's licenses a couple years ago?
  14. QUOTE(kapkomet @ Apr 6, 2005 -> 07:45 AM) I've been pretty quiet on this issue, but if people can get thrown out of office for mail fraud (the dude from Illinois, what was his name) - DeLay needs to go... stupid ass, what was he thinking? Jim Ryan? Agreed. I can't believe that intelligent men such as Delay and Ryan make such idiotic decisions. My favorite is the former mayor of Waterbury, CT (can't recall his name). He was thrown out of office and imprisoned for having intercourse with underage prostitutes. And it gets even better: His father-in-law is in the mafia. I wonder how long it'll be before he gets shanked in the joint.
  15. I'm not sure that he has three or four more years in him. I'd guess that he'd be able to play two more at a relatively high level and will begin tailing off. I guess it depends on how much of a pay cut he'd be willing to take.
  16. QUOTE(SoxFan101 @ Apr 5, 2005 -> 10:51 PM) But hey good start so far right. I'll take a White Sox win any day, no matter what the score is.
  17. QUOTE(SoxFan101 @ Apr 5, 2005 -> 10:04 PM) well id assume that Podsenick and Iguchi can both bunt and that Ozzie has worked on bunting for everyone during spring training.... last year your right... we couldnt bunt but you have to believe Ozzie had everyone working on bunting this off-season. Last year? Hell, we haven't been able to bunt since Gene Lamont was running the squad. I love the fact that Ozzie is trying to get this squad to play solid fundamental ball, but I'm not going to gulp down the Ozzie Kool Aid just yet. I want to see it before I buy into it. I've been looking for effective bunting and base-running from this squad for the past decade and haven't seen jack s***.
  18. QUOTE(AddisonStSox @ Apr 5, 2005 -> 07:35 PM) As bad as Koch was for the Sox, I never felt any animosity towards him. He always seemed to be working hard and it appeared he really wanted to get things right. It's a shame he was never able to get on track on the SouthSide. Agreed. He was a class act in Chicago. Never made excuses for his failures and was a good clubhouse guy on top of it. I'm sorry that things didn't work out with him and the Jays, but WTF were they thinking when they signed him to a $1 million deal? Had they not looked at his past three years' stats?
  19. QUOTE(winodj @ Apr 5, 2005 -> 07:04 PM) Its much tighter in Windsor. I almost didn't get let back in to the States because I didn't have my birth certificate with me, this law was changed and enforced in 2002, 2003. That's interesting. I drove back through Windsor on the six-month anniversary of 9/11 with a Palestinian in my front passenger seat and they did absolutely nothing. IIRC, they didn't even ask for our IDs. "Tightened security," my ass. Wow, you've got some balls. I wouldn't dare tell a border patrol guard to do s*** after I've been caught smuggling merchandise across the border. You should consider yourself lucky.
  20. QUOTE(SoxFan101 @ Apr 5, 2005 -> 08:13 PM) On the other hand its easier to get a single or double and a sac bunt would put that man in position to score. I disagree that it's easier to double AND sac bunt to put a guy into position to score (remember, he hasn't scored yet) than to hit a homer or back-to-back doubles. This is especially true for a team like the Sox where NOBODY knows how to bunt. :headshake

    Saul Bellow

That's very sad news. Henderson the Rain King was a great book.
  22. QUOTE(winodj @ Apr 5, 2005 -> 04:32 PM) I think O'Reilly translates better to TV than radio. Much more effective as a communicator. Ingraham is alright as far as talk goes. Springer is a very good talk radio host. He seems to understand the medium. Better than Franken, and G. Gordon Liddy. Not quite as well as Hannity, Rush or Randi Rhodes. But he has the ability to be very powerful in the business especially since he's Clear Channel backed which gives him access to Cleveland and a couple of other bigger markets that Air America hasn't cracked yet. Yeah, I was kidding about Springer. I've never heard him discuss anything in a serious medium, so my comment was more or less a knee-jerk stereotype. Perhaps I'll give him a listen tomorrow. Is Air America streamed over the web for free? (I don't have Sirius or XM.) Agreed that O'Reilly is better on TV than radio. He has a certain charisma that many other intelligent commentators lack (e.g., Alan Colmes). He tends to over-use certain themes and catch-phrases at times, but I guess nobody is perfect. Imus, on the other hand, is by far the worst on TV. He's a freaking corpse. Ingraham is good, but I listen to her because she's on in the morning more than anything else. I wasn't a huge fan of her MSNBC show back in the late '90s, despite the fact that she's hot. I think he's a bit extreme at times and I don't care for him as a person, but I think that Rush does an absolutely tremendous job on the radio. He has a perfect radio voice and handles the format extremely well. If he weren't a complete jackass, I'd be a regular listener.
