QUOTE(jackie hayes @ Oct 16, 2007 -> 07:05 AM) Wow -- it shows how far right the GOP has moved when even Cheney gets labeled a "liberal". Gotta give you props for that one. Nice shot. LOL

Cost of campaign advertising to hit $3,000,000,000.00
YASNY replied to Texsox's topic in The Filibuster
QUOTE(Gregory Pratt @ Oct 16, 2007 -> 09:01 AM) I'm sorry that you don't like being questioned. It's a fair Q -- what is a middle class President? Are you arguing that, say, a trucker should be President? An accountant? A man who runs a mom-and-pop shop? Your barber? Presidents are, and should be, people who take on higher end positions in society. Some of them are born into them and some of them work their way up. Accordingly, there's a lot of money on the high end and so it's not possible to be a "middle class President" if you expect a President to be making 50,000 a year. Hell, it's not likely that they'll make less than 100,000, from their government job alone as Governor or Senator, either of which is a must for a President. So are Clinton and Reagan middle class Presidents? Was anybody? I think so. In those two cases, even. But if you don't want to "argue on," sorry to hear it. I forgot that discourse in this filibuster is limited to ad hominem political attacks and wholesale derisions of entire political parties and the people within. He said 'You were right." What more do you need? -

QUOTE(Jordan4life_2007 @ Oct 15, 2007 -> 10:03 PM) Could you imagine what the Rockies would've done to the Cubs? lol. They would have completed the sweep in about the third inning of Game 1.

QUOTE(103 mph screwball @ Oct 16, 2007 -> 07:59 AM) Who was the last Dominican that was signed and developed by the Sox to make the team? Who was the last player from Latin America? Magglio? I can't speak for other posters, but I took their point to mean major league talented Dominican players. How many players from the Dominican have made the major leagues in the last 15 years? Latin America? What percentage were brought up in the Sox system? Statmandu? Where are you:)? I think expectations have been raised with a Latin manager and a World Series title. To their credit, the Sox have brought in impact players from Japan. I humbly await enlightenment from the knowledgeable. That's what you call throwing down the gauntlet.

QUOTE(Jenks Heat @ Oct 15, 2007 -> 11:17 AM) Comparing older parks to newer parks are like comparing cars, television and the rotary to the touch tone phone. The older stuff is nice but it becomes out dated and should be replaced. Yankee Stadium, Fenway and Wrigley are testaments to history but each are uncomparable to a modern park. If you think an average seat at Wrigley is better than an average seat at Comiskey, you are wrong. The amenities also can not be compared. The UD at Yankee Stadium is identical if not a greater slope than blue seat Comiskey. Fenway and Wrigley have a quirky feel to them and that feeling is not comfort. I liked Chicago Stadium but the UC blows it away. I'll save the history of things for Ken Burns documentatries and museums. IMHO. Go Tribe I guess. I agree with everything you said here. Still, I'm glad I got to see that right field porch in Tiger Stadium before they stopped playing there.

QUOTE(Rex Kicka** @ Oct 15, 2007 -> 09:19 AM) Wasn't that Nixon? You may be right. It doesn't matter which crooked party the individual in charge came from. It might have been LBJ though. Who controlled congress back then?

QUOTE(Texsox @ Oct 11, 2007 -> 03:08 PM) I don't think most try to "trash" him. In fact I list him as one of our greatest presidents. But I also see some legacy issues that frighten me. The single most important thing he did was make Americans believe in America again. The second best cheerleader was Clinton. After the aging Reagan, and the grandfatherly Bush, (with his wife who looked like his mother), the youthful, sax playing Clinton arrives on the scene. We eat that stuff up and it shows in the economic numbers and everything else. The President as cheerleader is very important in my eyes. What Reagan left behind was the GOP trying to recreate his Teflon image by screaming media bias, and our love of debt. The Soviet economy crashed under the weight of debt, and Reagan is given credit for that, who will take "credit" when we collapse under the debt? I don't know. I'd be inclined to blame those in charge when we went off the gold standard and put the Social Security fund into the general fund.

There is a place and time for civil disobedience. I believe we are quickly approahing that place and time. I'm ready.

QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Oct 12, 2007 -> 10:50 AM) Personally I don't think it is a big deal. I truely believe the US and the world would be in much better shape if people could laugh at themselves instead of just laughing at others. Unfortunately the PC world we live in doesn't exsist n that form. The whole "all walks of life" thing is a bad excuse for a double standard. We all know that the NASCAR crowd is by and large white, dispite the best efforts to expand into other walks of life. Would you have made the same joke if I had made the same post about rappers or orange pickers? I doubt it. Like I said it goes back to a double standard, and the fact that you don't see this as a big deal just reinforces my point that some groups are OK to make fun of, and others are not. Big picture if we got upset everytime this happened, or laughed everytime this happened we would be a lot better off than just picking and choosing who to laugh at based on an artificial set of stereotypes and popular conception. The more lines we draw just reinforce divides instead of erasing them. Race/Class/Sex warfare will be a part of American society until our attitudes towards different groups change. Either we are all the same, or we aren't. Random codes of "correctness" don't fix these problems, they only exaserbate them. Thanks Mike. Very well said. As the son of a pair of native Kentuckians who was born and raised in the Chicago area (me, not the parents) I can tell you that there was, and apparently still is, a prejudice against southerners. Yet, it seems that it's 'OK' to hold those views. I've spoken out against a few prejudicial remarks on this site in past and was told I was overreacting. I wasn't. It sucks to be the recipiant of stereotypical remarks. What sucks even more is due to the fact that I'm a white American male, I have no reason to offended about anything that is said. There was a discussion on this site a couple/few years ago about whether or not the term "Jap" was derogitory. I took the stance that it was not. I considered it the same as calling someone from England a "Brit". But, I was eventually convinced that I was wrong about that. It came down to the fact if a person of Japanese heritage was offended by the use of the word, then it was inapproriate to use it. As a result, I no longer use the word. I just wish people would step back and take the same attitude toward southern Americans that they seem to be so eager to embrace when it comes to anybody else who is somewhat "different".

As far as I'm concerned, anybody but Hillary. In fact, I may just vote for the Democratic nominee just to thank the Dems for not choosing her.

I think anyone who has half a brain, baseball wise, knows the Cards were more lucky than good. But hey, they won it all.

I want Barry Bonds in the Cell
YASNY replied to Punch and Judy Garland's topic in Sox Baseball Headquarters
I'm not going to read the whole thread to see if this has been said, but I believe that before we see Bonds at the Cell, we'll see Bonds IN a cell. -
QUOTE(Texsox @ Oct 14, 2007 -> 09:59 PM) There are many times here that a more restrictive site seems like heaven. It seems that we are midway between all the boards, loose enough to be a community, strict enough to stop people from "running on the field". In other words, just right. And Rex is right, they too care enough to create a place for Sox fans to meet. I banned WSI from me, but that was my choice. I never felt comfortable over there and seemed to fit right in when I came over here. This is not a bash of WSI. It's just the way I felt. I hope they continue to be successful and that they enjoy what they have over there.

QUOTE(SoxFan101 @ Oct 14, 2007 -> 10:45 PM) I wouldnt even want to give Rowand 10 million a year let alone 14 for 6 years..... If we are going to shell out that type of money for a CF it better be Hunter or Jones. Not Jones. He's not half the CF he used to be. He's gotten lazy or something.

QUOTE(Rowand44 @ Oct 13, 2007 -> 02:46 PM) Or people don't need a historic stadium to enjoy a game. I'm there to watch baseball not take in the history of the place, I really couldn't care less that the Cubs have lost for a billion years in Wrigley or that the Red Sox fans have whined for a million years in their park or that the Yanks have been the best franchise in sports for however long in their park. But hey, you know everything. The day will come, maybe the day they close the Cell, that you'll come to appreciate the history made in all these old ballparks. I've attended games in Wrigley, Comiskey, the old Busch and the old Tiger Stadium and I am very glad I had the chance to see every one of those great old ball parks.

QUOTE(GreatScott82 @ Oct 13, 2007 -> 01:51 PM) come on, did they really win the division because of iguchi or was it the infamous collapse of the Mets? Gooch did help them for a couple weeks before Utley returned i give you that. Im guessing KW felt bad about the Garcia disaster so he would help his friend out by giving them Gooch. THis team needs speed not another bopper. So if we trade Crede i hope it will be for a speedy guy. Crede for Figgins would be wonderful! That trade almost happened last year while Crede came off his best year, now it might be a stretch, but i know the Angels are hungry for another power hitter and a 3B, maybe they take a chance on Crede? Considering that they won the division by one game, it's not a stretch at all to say the Phils would have fallen short had they not acquired Iguchi.

QUOTE(DBAH0 @ Oct 10, 2007 -> 10:02 PM) If LaRussa and Dave Duncan leave St. Louis as well, they may target more "sure things" in terms of SP, instead of the high risk guys in Kip Wells, Mark Mulder, Brandon Looper etc. I'd target at least 2 out of Reyes, Rasmus and Anderson in a trade for Garland, with Rasmus a must include. Because teams like Seattle will probably offer you a lot of talent for JG this off-season, just remember the Jason Jennings deal for comparisons sake. Good point re Seattle. They'll probably set the bar in any potential bidding on Garland.

Here's the quote. Phil Rogers. "Few teams are expected to pursue pitching more aggressively than St. Louis, which can't count on getting anything from the surgically repaired Chris Carpenter and Mark Mulder. Dontrelle Willis and Jon Garland are on the Cardinals' radar screen, and the jump in payroll could make them players if Minnesota puts Johan Santana on the market. …"

QUOTE(hitlesswonder @ Oct 10, 2007 -> 09:46 PM) They have a good catching prospect in Bryan Anderson. Other than that, their minor system isn't so hot, but Anderson plus one other decent prospect would be about the same thing that Garcia brought last season. I just don't know who else that prospect might be. Actually, Anderson & Reyes would be a lot like the Garcia trade: B prospect plus failed former top prospect/project. But I don't see Reyes as the kind of pitcher KW would target. Where'd you hear this? I honestly can't recall. I can say that it was a legit media source and not a message board rumor. In fact, I'm thinking it may have been one of the Trib's baseball writers.
