I hear the Cardinals are targeting Garland. Any thoughts on what we could get in return from them?

I'll take Uribe for defensive purposes. It would help immensly if he actually gets in shape prior to next season. Consider it will be his free agency year, I'm thinking he'll do so.

Good thread guys. A lot of different but well expressed opinions. I didn't see the game, so my comments will be based on what I've read here and elsewhere. Broadway stated the he pretty much threw his cutter exclusively as that was the only pitch he could consistently throw for a strike. I believe I read that at the Trib's website. If that's the case it tells me two things. One, if he was facing the Yankees or Red Sox, they would have lit him up the 2nd time through the lineup. Two, either he just had a feel for the pitch or it is a pretty damn good pitch. That remains to be seen. Regarding the comment that a pitcher shouldn't learn how to pitch in the majors, well, that is correct but only to certain extent. The only way to learn how to consistently get major league hitters out is to face major league hitters unless you just really have some seriously nasty stuff. It usually takes time for a pitcher to develop the know how to be an effective big league pitcher. That is something you can't learn in the minors. Of course, there exceptions to that rule, but Lance Broadway will not be one of those exceptions.

QUOTE(rangercal @ Aug 15, 2007 -> 08:02 AM) I'd also like the sox to deal Thome to free up money for Rowand whille holding on to Dye. Have Fields DH, Rowand in Cf and Dye in RF. a lineup close to this is what I would like to see: Owens LF Fields DH Dye RF Konerko 1b AJ C Rowand CF Crede 3b Richar 2b ? SS holy righthanded lineup batman! I think it would be virtually impossible to trade JT. He has a NTC and he'd more than likely not accept a trade to anyone but the Cubs and Tribe.

QUOTE(SoxFan77 @ Aug 7, 2007 -> 11:33 AM) huh? Just ask Bud Black about his attitude.. Seems to be none there. His problems in Oakland because he wanted to be a starting OF. I don't see how anyone would pass on him. esp with our current selection of deadbeats. I'm assuming we won't have our current selection of deadbeats next year. Problems in Cleveland, Los Angeles and now Oakland. I'll still pass.

QUOTE(SoxFan77 @ Aug 7, 2007 -> 11:19 AM) I would think with our training staff we could keep him on the field for longer periods of time. The injuries this year were due to age mainly. Also due to listening to someone agent instead of a Doctor. Bradley would come fairly cheap 7-9mil a year.. brings Speed, a little pop and great avg to a team that needs 2/3. He also can play good to decent Def. He also brings an attitude that ain't worth a s***. Pass!

QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Aug 7, 2007 -> 11:04 AM) Every year in Chicago until 2005. When next year arrived for 1/2 the city. And in about 30 or so other baseball cities every year. Seriously, I never give up hope until the math says it's impossible. But the Sox have to scale Everest 3 or 4 times to actually get to the top this year. Can it happen? Yes, it's possible. Will it happen? I kinda doubt it.

QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Aug 7, 2007 -> 10:52 AM) At least it gives us some hope for next year. And the way the kiddies have been playing lately certainly seems to cut down on the # of holes to fill. Wait till next year! Where have I heard that before?

Way too little. Way too late.

I haven't seen enough of Owens to have an opinion on him. I've just seen a handful of games with him playing. However, I do have an opinion on Joe Crede. When Joe is healthy he is a very solid ML 3B and a decent hitter. Sure, his numbers sucked this year, but the dude couldn't even sleep at night due to back pain. I believe Crede has shown enough over the years that he is worth a $5M gamble for next year IF all things appear to good with his back. That's a decision that KW will have to make and I don't envy him being in that spot. I do know this much, Joe Crede is too good of a ballplayer to just cut loose and get nothing in return. Josh Fields is a solid plan B in case Crede can't cut it, which is a very nice position to be in as opposed to depending on Joe with no decent option backing him up.

That surprises me. I'm glad the O's pulled him back.

QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Aug 5, 2007 -> 03:19 PM) I doubt there's any team in the big leagues which uses "Work quickly on the mound" as a mantra as much as the Sox. And strangely...it keeps working. It works because it's smart baseball. The main benefit is that your fielders remain on their toes. Every guy will be a half step quicker with a quick pitcher on the mound than with a slow worker.

QUOTE(diegotony06 @ Jun 30, 2007 -> 02:30 PM) My point is this. You already took a risk, a huge one, in giving a 35 year old a 3 year extension, so by the time his deal is up hell be 38. Now keep in mind, nobody really knows how old JC is, so it's even a greater risk, plus he is a power pitcher and he is right handed. There should be nowhere near the risk when it comes to giving MB a 4year deal. He is 28, in 4 years he will be 32, he is left handed, a finesse pitcher, who has made every start in his career. Has been a stand up guy his whole time in a Whitesox unform. Plus you might as wel kiss 27 year old JG goodbye, cause he's gonna want the same kind of deal. To me this is unacceptable as a fan who supports this team, and has for the 36 years. Give MB his NTC and rebuild your rotation around MB and JG, not JC and JV!!! Well said. I couldn't agree with you more.

QUOTE(WHITESOXRANDY @ Jun 29, 2007 -> 06:54 AM) I'd love for Kenny to find another GM that's in love with all of those peripherals and get a nice haul for Javy. Then, the Sox can fill some holes and find a pitcher with some guts that can pitch well when in crucial games that matter and come thru with the wins when it really counts - a guy with the brains and stomach to get the job done. I noticed that in all of this talk about Javy no one mentioned his W-L record. Interesting. I like that Garland guy that won 18 games last year and the year before. And, that Buehrle guy that wins 60 % of the time. I'll take a couple more like that and let everyone else count the strikeouts. I'm with you. There's something to be said for a pitcher that knows how to WIN. But then again, we all know the W-L record is not a valid measure of a pitcher's value. Give me a staff full of Jack McDowells and I'll take my chances.

QUOTE(FlaSoxxJim @ May 23, 2007 -> 07:16 AM) The long and winding road There has to be a twist I rode my motorcycle in the rain. flirtin with disaster He's going the distance Gonna eat a lot of Peaches And I was standin' on the side of the road Standing in line, marking time, waiting for the welfare dime Then I saw her face The girl with the kaleidoscope eyes A brown eyed girl in hand me downs Blinded me.....with SCIENCE She was the best damn woman I had ever seen Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds She ain't exactly small 42-39-56 BABY GOT BACK! She knows she got everything a woman needs to get a man, yeah. One Bourbon, one Scotch, one beer. I don't wanna touch you too much baby 'cuz making love to you might drive me crazy Cause southern belles are hell at night I'm a cowboy, on a steel horse I ride Cowboy take me away Slob on my knob, like corn on the cob Lie back and let me unlock you I've got a brand new pair of roller skate, you've got a brand new key She's a super freak, a super freak, she's super freeeeakaaayyyyyy Why don't you come with me little girl, on a magic carpet ride? You aint seen nothing yet But with a magnifying glance, I just sort of look her over. Now I'm back in the ring to take another swing And I fell in to a burning ring of fire Burn baby burn! - Disco inferno! Burn baby burn! - Burn that mama down, yoh! Yeah Im hot blooded, check it and see Feel the fever burning inside of me Lord amighty! I feel my temperature risin' I'm so hot for you and you're so cold Why can't I free your doubtful mind and melt your cold, cold heart Let's get together Before we get much older. Because I'm turning Japanese I think I'm turning Japanese I really think so Walking on thin ice, I'm paying the price For throwing the dice in the air. You're as cold as ice. You're willing to sacrifice our love I see a little silhouetto of a man, Scaramouche, scaramouche will you do the fandango- Turned cartwheels cross the floor Like the circles that you find In the windmills of your mind I'm so dizzy, my head is spinning. Ride a painted pony let the spinnin' wheel spin. And it stoned me to my soul, stoned me just like Jellyroll Everybody must get stoned That Ain't no way to have fun, son Some people claim there's a woman to blame Young girl, get out of my mind My love for you is way out of line And they called it puppy love Tonight's the night for you to hit it doggie style If you don't expect too much from me, you might not be let down Where it all ends I can't fathom, my friends. If I knew, I might toss out my anchor. I just spent six months in a leaky boat, lucky just to keep afloat. Call for the Captain ashore Let me go home, let me go home The captains tell they pay you well. But How ya gonna make some time when all you got is one thin dime? Time is on my side, yes it is. Time everlasting, time to play B-Sides. When they know they have you, they really have you.

QUOTE(elrockinMT @ May 23, 2007 -> 02:21 PM) Surgery is always a last resort, but you have to wonder if Joe shoudn't have taken that option. Maybe at the end of this year. I'm not going to second guess anybody for opting to try something other than back surgery.
