QUOTE(knightni @ Oct 8, 2006 -> 02:15 AM) Steinbrenner's checkbook is at fault as much as anything. Instead of working on guys and developing guys, they go out every year and make huge free agent splashes on old guys past their primes just to make headlines. Contreras is a prime example. He was WAY overpaid until Cooper worked with him. Now, he's worth what the Yankees paid him in his first contract. Yankees players are pressured to succeed because of their salaries. Some can handle it - many can't - due to mental or physical maladies brought on by age or stress. The Yankees build their team on paper. Doesn't always work that way.

QUOTE(Rowand44 @ Oct 8, 2006 -> 02:31 AM) The playoffs are a whole new season though, the Tigers definitely stunk down the stretch but they still won 95 games. My point is, it wasn't realistic for them to continue on that ridiculous pace they were on and because of that, they slowed down considerably. They weren't an 100 win team and well they didn't win 100 games. I completely agree on the A's though, they're a great team, much much much better than the Yankees. This is the true World Series. This may be a case of the Tigers hit their rough spot and are now getting hot at the right time. Just like the '05 Sox. Oakland is a damn good team, though. I'd have to give the nod to the A's, but the Tigers are capable.

QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Oct 8, 2006 -> 02:10 AM) That he really is not committed to the Yankees, and will not fight to stay there. I see. But I can't blame him. If you're not wanted, you want to move to someplace where you are. Human nature.

QUOTE(Jordan4life_2006 @ Oct 8, 2006 -> 01:15 AM) Detroit beating the Yankees frustrates me even more as far as the Sox go. If we had played even .500 baseball the second-half, Detroit wouldn't even be in the playoffs. I have no doubts, even despite all the problems we had, that we could've swept the Yankees. If we just could've f***in' got in. Well we didn't. Give the Tigers their due. They earned it.

QUOTE(SoxAce @ Oct 8, 2006 -> 01:51 AM) That just says it all right there. What, exactly, does that say?

QUOTE(DBAH0 @ Sep 15, 2006 -> 02:08 AM) I know man, but the issue is this. If you play Gload over Pods in LF against RHP, who's going to lead off? You'd have to play Sweeney over Anderson in CF, and let Sweeney leadoff, when he's probably not ready to do so, as most people would know. Gload's never going to leadoff or Mack, even though they have good numbers, because they don't have speed, and that's what Ozzie wants for the top of the lineup. Speed doesn't mean much when it's in the dugout 70% of the time.

I'm not surprised. I always said Garland would be a good pitcher. I expect him to get even better over the next 2 or 3 years.

QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Aug 15, 2006 -> 08:15 AM) Oh, no there have been arguements against its effectiveness as well. Yep. Arguments along the lines of ... You can't believe anything someone says while being tortured. This kind of shoots holes in that theory.

QUOTE(Felix @ Aug 15, 2006 -> 09:04 AM) Funny, if the Sox had that happen, this entire forum would be saying that they have no balls, were choking, and that the season was over. Even funnier, thats what it was like around here a few weeks ago. ....And about Sept 15th, 2005.

QUOTE(VAfan @ Aug 15, 2006 -> 08:55 AM) I like baseball stats, but I think these guys lack common sense. How can the Yanks be 76-21 favorites over the Red Sox with only a 2-game lead and 45+ games to go? Do you think they would lay those odds on a bet? Moreover, how can the Yanks be 82-57 favorites over us to make the playoffs when they have a worse record than we do? (Granted, they have a division lead, but it is only 2 games and if they lose it, they are out right now.) Why do the Yanks project out to more wins than us when they have fewer wins now and have a poorer run differential? I know BP has formulas for all of this, but the formulas need some adjusting. The Yanks are in a slightly weaker division so they would be theoretically be able to win more games, I would think.

QUOTE(Milkman delivers @ Aug 15, 2006 -> 10:46 AM) I'm liking how Ozzie recently has played only 1 sub per game. That's the way he should be doing it. Get most of the guys a rest about once a week, and get each sub in there every couple of days and as defensive replacements late in the game. It's getting late in the year. Ozzie tries to keep everybody sharp and/or fresh through the 'meat' of the season, but at crunch time he makes adjustments. He showed that pattern last year, to the point that the subs rarely got into any post season games. The man has a plan.

QUOTE(SoxFan101 @ Aug 14, 2006 -> 10:04 PM) There are "some" ignorant people in all religions.... nothing really courageous about saying it about 1 particular religion or another. Yes in the middle east its male dominated but who are we to judge what is right or wrong.... Male dominated. That's like calling Lake Michigan moist. They treat their women like dogs. Here we have billions being discriminated against because of gender, yet who are we to judge?

QUOTE(chitownsportsfan @ Aug 15, 2006 -> 01:43 AM) People wonder why Billy Beane is the best GM in the game, well with a payroll of peanuts, he once again has the A's in 1st place. A huge part of that is a mostly healthy big Frank, he has put up on OPS of .911 will slugging 25 HR's and getting on base at a .382 clip. The Big Hurt's base salary this year? $500,000. Frank is now only 27 homers away from 500 and will likely end the season around 20 short of 500. Does he have enough left in him to get the number? My guess is yes, one more half season of health should give him around 495 and a role as a spot starter pinch hitter in 2008 should put him over the top. That's a conservative estimate, but it still gets him the 500 and the automatic keys to Cooperstown, should he be willing to put in two more years of work. Frank remains the greatest slugger of the 90's without a hint of steroids standing between him and the record books. I hope the big guy doesn't break our hearts in the post season.

QUOTE(beautox @ Aug 14, 2006 -> 03:00 PM) a 6th outfielder? have you even looked at his stats, or better yet his play on the field? i'm going to go out on a limb and say you haven't. Also im pretty sure they said the same thing about Steve Finley and hes had a pretty great career *note: im not saying Denorfia is going to a be a charter memeber of the 300-300 club, just that he isn't a 4th OFer, also didn't they say that about Willy Mo? and now hes just coming into his prime for the red sox*. Freddy has an option for next year and after that hes a FA, he has the least upside of our starting staff, its pretty apparent his fastball is no longer fast, and he constantly shows up his team mates and we need to open a spot for McCarthy. If we got Denorfia we have him for 5-6years, that keeps payroll down, and contiunes to keep us in contetion, by adding young cheap talented players it also allows us to keep Fields and Sweeney down at AAA to develop even more. Dunn, Freel, Griffey, Hollandsworth ... I stand corrected. Fifth outfielder.

QUOTE(KevHead0881 @ Aug 14, 2006 -> 10:42 PM) Hernandez has been crap for a while now. The one guy I worried about this series was the guy we saw tonight, being a soft-tossing lefty and all. Any word on who the Royals starter for the finale will be? He beat Boston his last start. 4ER over 7IP iirc. Let's hope that's a case of the blind squirrel finding a nut.

Have a nice day, Steff.

QUOTE(supernuke @ Aug 14, 2006 -> 01:09 AM) Hmmm, Both of them were born on Jan. 28, 1974. That's hilarious.

QUOTE(DBAH0 @ Aug 14, 2006 -> 03:16 AM) Yeah Lugo's a FA, but he wants a 5 year 40M contract as a MINIMUM, and they guy's very error prone as a SS, which is a big no-no for Ozzie. I would think the Reds would jump at Garcia for Denforia ALONE. Freddy will have value as a trade chip to teams in the N.L this off-season like Philly, Cincinatti and San Diego just to name a few. A solid, proven veteran starting pitcher for what is probably a 6th outfielder? Ummm, yeah, I'd say they'd jump on that.

QUOTE(Steff @ Aug 13, 2006 -> 06:35 PM) Stop what Rex...? Stop expecting a polite reply in return rather than a snide rude one? Stop expecting folks who make gross and ignorant generalizations to explain their statements when inquired upon? Stop expecting the ability here to call that response out in a polite and respectful manner? Condescending was quite nice considering the alternatives. My "whatever" was my way of saying I'm not going to waste my time arguing with you. You know, politely stepping aside and not getting into a pissing match. Have a nice day.

QUOTE(Bonderman38 @ Aug 13, 2006 -> 10:38 PM) Yes, so when he has that supposed problem again, just go show him that that wasn't why, you just have his number. His number is 0-3 vs. the Sox.
-
QUOTE(Bonderman38 @ Aug 13, 2006 -> 10:33 PM) Big Deal. If they want to prove him wrong just go beat him when he has his "problem" fixed. Seems to me that us beating on him is the problem.

I'd like to see the Reds win it, because they weren't expected to contend. Also, I was impressed with the way they revamped their bullpen before the deadline when "there weren't any quality relievers available."

QUOTE(Greg The Bull Luzinski @ Aug 12, 2006 -> 09:58 AM) Cubs fans are green with envy. 2 World Series Titles in 15 years of baseball. With the suckfest that is the NL, the Marlins could go to their 3rd World Series. Hell, I was green with envy before last year. I was also envious when the Royals, Blue Jays, DBacks, Mets, etc (all expansion teams that won WS since I've been a baseball fan).

QUOTE(Greg The Bull Luzinski @ Aug 12, 2006 -> 09:50 AM) Agreed. But where will he play?
