QUOTE(SoxFan1 @ Jul 18, 2005 -> 12:33 PM) Why trade for Lowell and keep Crede? Why trade for Lowell at all?

QUOTE(Princess Dye @ Jul 18, 2005 -> 12:29 PM) thread title changed? tyrant. when i'm proved right, i'll demand 8 apologies. If it's official, then it was correct. If it isn't officially a done deal yet, then it's misleading.

This forum has really exploded. I guess through trial and error, we found the best way to go.

QUOTE(upnorthsox @ Jul 18, 2005 -> 12:20 PM) The relative scarcity of lefties over the 100+ yrs, Bias by coaches, the proclivity to put a lefty with the gun to be a catcher onto the mound instead, and maybe the heart of the matter the near non-existence of lefty catchers mitts at the little league level. All of these may be valid reasons given for the dearth of lefty catchers but some excuse about being obstructed for throws when no such thing happens for righty catchers with lefty hitters is as lame as it gets. I'll still bank on the knowledge of thousands of professionals for over a hundred years. Players, managers, coaches. Minor league players, managers, coaches. College and high school coaches. If having a LH catcher was actaully doable .. it would have been done.

QUOTE(SoxFan1 @ Jul 18, 2005 -> 12:04 PM) Thats the $1,000,000 question... Is that your final answer?

If we are considering trading Shingo for Hawkins, then the real question is ... who do you prefer on the 25 man roster, Hawkins or Jenks?

QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Jul 18, 2005 -> 11:49 AM) Talk about missing the forest for the trees... Does a bear s*** in the woods?

QUOTE(JUGGERNAUT @ Jul 18, 2005 -> 11:57 AM) Let's put it this way. Kenny wouldn't make such a trade unless he was confident Thome could contribute this year. Offensively our biggest weakness lies in hitting vs RHers: Everett vs RHers: 176AB .244/.761 21R/31RBI Thome 05 vs RHers: 120AB .233/.799 18R/19RBI Thome 04 vs RHers: 320AB .294/1.075 65R/71RBI If Thome is healthy enough to contribute he could help us in a big way both in the 2nd half & in the post-season. He would platoon with Thomas at DH, & Koney at 1B. Thomas was quoted this past week as saying the ankle is not going to get any better this year. That means playing time is not as much of a concern with him. I'll agree with you on this point ... the Sox need a big time LH bat. But tying ourselves to Thome 3 years and all those $ is just too much of a risk.

QUOTE(upnorthsox @ Jul 18, 2005 -> 11:17 AM) Ah, that would explain why there's no right handed pitchers since their back is to the runner on first and their pickoff throw is obstructed. Thanks for the help. But ... since the majority of hitters are RH, then RH pitchers are needed because they are generally better at getting them out. You may not agree with reasons that there are no LH catchers, but I'd say 100+ years of baseball history with the only LH catchers being publicity stunts or whatever pretty well closes that argument.

QUOTE(JUGGERNAUT @ Jul 18, 2005 -> 11:40 AM) Let's also not forget he has only 2 options for playing in the NL: PH, & 1B. He's more likely to injure his elbow or back playing 1B than he is DH'g. With the White Sox or any AL team for that matter he would DH almost as often as he plays 1B. I think the White Sox have a DH.

QUOTE(RockRaines @ Jul 18, 2005 -> 11:34 AM) f*** no, and I dont want to hear the s*** from cubs fans about how we bought their garbage, please please please dont do this KW Just tell them the Cubs are too stupid to know how to use him. I wouldn't worry about what Cub fans have to say at point of time in 2005.

QUOTE(JUGGERNAUT @ Jul 18, 2005 -> 11:36 AM) And how much has that bad back & bad elbow impacted his performance? 1995 452AB/.996OPS, 1996 505AB/1.062OPS, 1997 496AB/1.001OPS 1998 440AB/.998OPS, 1999 494AB/.967OPS, 2000 557AB/.929 OPS 2001 526AB/1.040OPS, 2002 480AB/1.122OPS, 2003 578AB/.958 OPS 2004 508AB/.977OPS Prior to 2005 he's avg'd 500+ AB, a high 900's OPS. That's better than most players in the league. If he can do that with a chronic back problem one can only imagine what he'd do with a healthy back. If Philly were to knock down the price to $30M/3.5yrs KW would be foolish not to consider it. The trade would of course be contingent upon Thome passing a comprehensive physical. 193 AB's does not a player make. Especially when he's got 5919 AB's in his career. Only two problems with your scenario. 1. It's not prior to 2005. 2. He doesn't have a healthy back.

QUOTE(SoxFan562004 @ Jul 18, 2005 -> 11:32 AM) I think the first two for sure, then Crede if the deal involves Lowell, and I would guess Carl or Rowand If a that's the rough sketch of any deal that is WAY to much and I would rather see the Sox wait and see if a few more teams fall out of it before July 31st and open up more names on the market Contreras, Marte and Crede ... for Lowell and Burnett? :puke

Moved from PHT to here.

Thinking in terms of only the 25 man roster, Hawkins is an upgrade over Shingo. A mid-level prospect being all it costs to upgrade, I'd pull the trigger on that deal.

QUOTE(Cubs Suck23 @ Jul 18, 2005 -> 11:26 AM) Dave (Baltimore, MD): Steve I think the deal for Burnett is going to get done w/ Baltimore, so why did you keep stating earlier that the Sox were getting him? Steve Phillips: (12:22 PM ET ) I'm surprised the Orioles have interest .. they have previously avoided pitchers who have spent time on the DL in the past, unless they can do a full MRI and exam prior to a deal. Frank Wren, back in the mid 90s, got burned with Xavier Hernandez, without the deal being contingent on a physical. The Orioles tried to void the contract but failed and had to pay him even though he couldn't pitch. The Orioled has interest in Sele one year but he couldn't pass their physical. The Orioles officals I talked to expressed Angelos would have the same feelings about Burnett. I thought all trades were contingent on a physical.

QUOTE(Punch and Judy Garland @ Jul 18, 2005 -> 11:22 AM) It's not actually that stupid. Notice those are the four teams closest to where he grew up? It isn't based on need, he would just only go to the four places closest to Peoria. There is evidence of some thought being put into the speculation, but it's speculation none the less.
-
QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Jul 18, 2005 -> 11:20 AM) I hope the Orioles get Burnett, because the package we are talking about is WAAAAAAAAAAAAAY overpaying for a mediocre pitcher. Totally agree.

Apparently, I'm not the only one with that opinion. Though, I would hardly consider a known issue such as a bad back an "opinion".

QUOTE(KevHead0881 @ Jul 18, 2005 -> 11:13 AM) Just for kicks, somebody call in and ask if Gload can play 3rd?

QUOTE(JUGGERNAUT @ Jul 18, 2005 -> 11:08 AM) I'm not sure if I would agree. Certainly there was risk of his age but his AB' s over the years are pretty healthy. 1995 CLE 452, 1996 CLE 505, 1997 CLE 496, 1998 CLE 440, 1999 CLE 494 2000 CLE 557, 2001 CLE 526, 2002 CLE 480, 2003 PHI 578, 2004 PHI 508 You're talking about a slugger who avg'd about 500 AB/yr w CLE before signing w PHI. Compared to other player's of his stature that's a pretty healthy track record. His bad back was a known problem. That's always a major risk. His previous stats are meaningless as the bad back was a fact at the time. It's still part of the equation and it's certainly a risk I don't want the Sox to take.

our record against probable 1st round playoff foes
YASNY replied to Greg Hibbard's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE(LosMediasBlancas @ Jul 18, 2005 -> 10:48 AM) What needs to happen for us to face Ana. in the 1st round?? The Twins or Indians would have to win the WC and LAA would have to finish with the worst record of the 3 division winners. This is assuming we finish with the best record. -
QUOTE(JUGGERNAUT @ Jul 18, 2005 -> 10:26 AM) phillyburbs.com: Possibility of the Phillies holding a firesale before 7/31. Red Sox scouting closer Wagner for last week & Rangers scouting starter Padilla. The Phillies had been eager to listen to offers for Padilla but seem reluctant on trading Wagner. Thome is available but there are no takers. That's why you should always be leary of long term contracts like the one the Tigers signed with Maggs. Thome was never considered a health risk prior to that signing. The Phillies are willing to eat some of the $47.5M left on the contract. Some think Thome will drop his no-trade clause for the Cubs, White Sox, Cards, & Indians. Phily price: Pitchers, young catcher, & young 3B. Correction. Thome was definitely considered a health risk before that signing. That's why that deal was so ludicrous.

QUOTE(TheDybber @ Jul 18, 2005 -> 10:16 AM) Are you kidding me? Are we talking about Little Leaguers? No, these are grown men. Making millions of dollars to play a game. And some of you are worried about how Uribe or Dye feel? None of us know how anyone on the team feels. Uribe may have been pissed, but instead of ripping Pauly, maybe we can put a positive spin on it and think that if Uribe IS pissed, that he talked to Pauly and they worked it out. Dye on the other hand has been in this league too long to care what a Paul Konerko says to the media ONCE. These guys really only get pissed because of two things, something that is blatantly wrong that is repeated constantly and personal attacks. I can't imagine a one time thing isn't going to get anyone's panties in a bunch. Let's drop it and enjoy the first sweep of the Indians in Cleveland in 42 years. Careful ... you'll end up taking my crown as the King of Crabby.
