QUOTE(Antonio Osuna @ Jul 19, 2005 -> 01:23 PM) I guess I'm in the minority when I say that I want to see Magglio take an inside pitch to the kneecap sometime this series, eh? I'd say you were in a very minute minority.

QUOTE(kyyle23 @ Jul 19, 2005 -> 01:41 PM) So is this gonna be like West Side Story? Are we gonna fight WSI at some point during the game? Should I bring my brass knuckles? No way man. Skin only, dude.

QUOTE(Antonio Osuna @ Jul 19, 2005 -> 01:24 PM) 5 run innings are rare for this team. They tend to score in bunches across many innings. And that proves your point?

QUOTE(kyyle23 @ Jul 19, 2005 -> 01:13 PM) I think this also presents a problem with acquiring a starter. What starter is going to want to come here and start only if El Duque is hurt? It really limits what Kenny can go out and do because Duque's status is always in flux. To me(and only to me, its only my opinion) Duque is really going to have to prove himself in the next month to be healthy and durable. Well, 2 or 3 days ago, Al Leiter would have accepted the position. Seriously, just a decent veteran pitcher ... Redman, for example .... or Moyer. just someone serviceable that could step in and give you a good 5 innings if you needed it. Sure, a stud pitcher would be great, but I'm trying to be a bit more down to earth here.

QUOTE(daa84 @ Jul 19, 2005 -> 01:05 PM) i dont disagree with you that we could use a lefthanded rbi guy, but right now with the market as is, and our current lineup, who can we get and where does he fit? the lefthanded rbi guys available i can think of griffey, helton, thome (all overpriced) dunn and huff would be ok, but play them where? huff makes the most sense as a fill in guy who can split time between 1st 3rd and OF, but he is gonna cost tons of prospects. I don't have all the answers, man. Ask KW.

QUOTE(kyyle23 @ Jul 19, 2005 -> 01:07 PM) The important part of your statement. Hernandez really worries me that he is going to need more "time off" in mid august. I'm not all that concerned with August. We can muddle through if he needs a break. I'm more concerned if Mark or Jon or Freddie goes down. That's why I think we should pick up another starter.

QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Jul 19, 2005 -> 01:06 PM) HR is quite right...the picture does change in the postseason. We know that. That's why it's up to our guys to prove that they belong. There's no reason the Sox can't match up with anyone given our pitching staff, but until we've done it, we're still unproven. That's the fact, Jack!

QUOTE(kyyle23 @ Jul 19, 2005 -> 01:02 PM) Good enough to stop worrying about a trade for another starter? I think the Sox should get another starter, but not because of El Duque. We have 2.5 months of season left and one of our 5 starters could have a Halladay or Prior type incident happen. If I knew our 5 starters would be healthy all year, I'd dance with the ones that brought us.

QUOTE(nitetrain8601 @ Jul 19, 2005 -> 12:52 PM) I have a feeling both the Yanks and Red Sox are making the playoffs. I agree with what Harold said. It could be a Seattle Mariners type season. I'm hoping it isn't though. I'm just a pessimist, so don't mind me. It very well could be. But as a fan ... YA GOTTA BELIEVE!!!!

Crede not the only one with back issues

QUOTE(Sonik22 @ Jul 19, 2005 -> 12:57 PM) well everybody better be cheering for the teams that play the phillies because if the phillies stay in the race there is no way wagner is going anywhere. OK! As long as they aren't playing the f***in' Cubs. -
QUOTE(kyyle23 @ Jul 19, 2005 -> 12:59 PM) Im just wondering what everyone's feel is about last nights pitching performance out of Hernandez. I felt that he was still pretty shaky, and didnt show what he needed to show in order to take the butterflies out of my stomach every time he pitches until the end of the season. Lost in the glory that was Joe Crede, Juan Uribe, Konerko and Thomas going deep was that Hernandez only went 6 innings, gave up 4 earned runs, and threw 96 pitches. I didnt expect him to go deep into the game, truth be told, but i was hoping for a little more efficiency and for El Duque to avoid the big inning. Do you feel any better today about the 5th starter spot than you did before yesterdays game? In a word ... Yes.

The whole Chicago vs. Detroit has to figure in, even if the Sox and Kitties haven't been blood rivals (excepting 2000) lately. Bears - Lions. Blackhawks - Dead Things Bulls - Pistons There is some rivalry material in all of those matchups.

Look, I respect Rafael Palmeiro very much. He's been a very very good ball player for a long time. But, throw away all the obscure stats. He has to be voted in by members of the BBWA and he will not be elected on the first ballot. He wasn't a Yankee. He wasn't a Dodger. He wasn't a Red Sox. Never close to an MVP. No batting titles. No RBI titles. No HR titles. Never won a pennant. I'd venture to guess he'll get in on his 3rd or 4th ballot. It depends on who else is part of the equation at the time.

QUOTE(HoosierSox @ Jul 19, 2005 -> 11:47 AM) LH RBI producer=Ross Gload. No. I mean someone capable of driving in 100 runs a year. Not a defensive replacement who happens to hit from the left side.

QUOTE(Buehrle>Wood @ Jul 19, 2005 -> 11:51 AM) Any chance it will be moved to Around the Horn? I kind of like my Pale Hose talk straight and to the point with no distractions. Read all of PHT first, then click on this subforum. That will accomplish what you seek.

QUOTE(Winnin Ugly @ Jul 19, 2005 -> 12:40 PM) How perfect would it be if the Yankees&Redsox miss the playoffs Everybody at ESPN would be wearing black.

QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Jul 19, 2005 -> 12:32 PM) His numbers when he was playing almost everyday in Sept. 04 were by far the best numbers he put up. He was adequate in the months before that coming off the bench, never having his average drop below .250 in any month. He hit .299 against Righties, and a whopping .425 against lefties, from the left side of the plate in 04. Is that considered favorable conditions? September. That's the time of year when teams with no shot bring up their AAA pitchers to see if they might be worth a s***. Yes, I'd say that's favorable conditions to a hitter.
-
QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Jul 19, 2005 -> 12:27 PM) That is assuming he would hit for the same averages playing everyday instead of being matched up in favorable conditions coming off of the bench. I can't believe this discussion is actually taking place. Ross Gload is not an everyday 1B for a good ML baseball team. He's a good DL fill in, late inning replacement and give the regular an occasional day off kind of guy. No disrespect to Ross, as those guys do have a certain amount of value. But as an everyday 1B, no thanks.

QUOTE(skidoochic @ Jul 19, 2005 -> 12:24 PM) I thought they got booed too. My guess was because it was in Detroit and they are division rivals and such. Didn't matter though as Buerhle surely impressed everyone there! Ummm ... not really. Mark got the win, but he certainly wasn't sharp. Hell, I'm a Buerhle fan and he didn't impress me. If it wasn't for that DP started by Tejada, MB might have been the loser.

QUOTE(HSC's Biggest Fan @ Jul 19, 2005 -> 11:59 AM) How does Hermanson getting hurt require getting a long reliever? I would think that we would try to get Shingo back in order if we need a closer rather than try to create one with Jenks, Marte, Cotts, Polittee , etc. Of these guys Shingo has the experience for this the rest have failed in this capacity without ever having success. Do not mess with what they are doing well. Will he get the job done? Who knows but he has done it previously. Put Hermanson on the DL reinstate Shingo and go from there. In two weeks see what happens. This makes more sense that Jenks, Adkins, Baj etc. I'd take my chances with any of those four as the closer before Shingo. In the AL Central, Shingo is done. They've seen him too many times.

QUOTE(Winnin Ugly @ Jul 19, 2005 -> 12:06 PM) I wasnt able to watch the all star pre game ceremonies but I saw in a few different places that the WSox players were booed when they were announced is this true.. If it is why so Yes, they were mildly booed. Considering the fact that we are running away with the division in which the ASG host team plays, I don't think that was too unexpected.
-
QUOTE(HSC's Biggest Fan @ Jul 19, 2005 -> 11:47 AM) Why not Shingo? Shingo is not a "long" reliever. Adkins can give us 5 or 6 innings if we need someone to eat innings. Baj was mentioned as a long man earlier, yet he's been a closer all season, so he wouldn't qualify for that role either.
-
QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Jul 19, 2005 -> 11:16 AM) I think it is more of a matter of how teams match up. The Twins always have a surplus in the pen, while the Red Sox have Kevin Youklis who is the next "thing" at 3B. I am sure if we were offering an equivilant pen pitcher (Marte or Cotts for example) that Boston would be talking to us too. No Dammit! They respect us!

QUOTE(qwerty @ Jul 19, 2005 -> 11:19 AM) A 5.88 era in 104 innings isn't too good usually. Could this be because he's been working on a new pitch?

QUOTE(winodj @ Jul 19, 2005 -> 06:18 AM) I'd argue that the potential for violence is greater with the Minutemen than with the ACLU. I was referring to Greenpeace.
