Olympics: Vancouver 2010 OFFICIAL THREAD

QUOTE (DBAHO @ Feb 19, 2010 -> 01:59 AM) Eh, in the good parts of the country yes. Bright is actually a Mormon though. I didn't even know they had Mormons in Australia. Btw, OT, but a friend of mine asked me this interesting question today, and I guess it can go here since it relates to 2 of the 3 people mentioned. Best Chicago athlete born in 1988: Patrick Kane, Jonathan Toews, or Derrick Rose? (And off topic again, lets hope Jared Mitchell ends up in that question someday.) -

QUOTE (joeynach @ Feb 19, 2010 -> 01:15 AM) Ya know there is something to be said that Andruw Jones did hit 17 Hr's in 281 AB's. Now put him at USCF with short porches and give him say 500 AB's, thats about 30 HR out of the DH position. Not bad right, last year Thome hit 23. He did do a good job hitting home runs and drawing walks last season. But that was almost entirely early on, as he had a .643 OPS after the All Star Game, and although I'm not a big batting average guy, he hasn't hit above .222 since 2006. I just think he's done, but I hope i'm wrong (even if Damon signs with the Sox.) -

QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Feb 19, 2010 -> 12:33 AM) Everything is in Damon's corner right now. Sox aren't going to do anything more so he's just gotta decide. I still think the Sox have a shot. It seems pretty clear he doesn't WANT to go to Detroit, so it'll be hard for him to sign that deal I think, even with it being more money. -

QUOTE (DBAHO @ Feb 19, 2010 -> 12:01 AM) Torah Bright won the gold in the Women's Snowboard Halfpipe. Are all the women in Australia good looking? It sure seems like it when I watch the Olympics. -

QUOTE (knightni @ Feb 18, 2010 -> 11:58 PM) I'll second that thought. Damon is a filler player in the short term anyway. The Sox just need somebody speedier than Andruw who can be a part time DH. There's got to be someone out there who'd fit that bill. I don't mind the Hank Blalock idea people are throwing out there if Damon indeed falls through, although he can't run. While I agree with you that Damon is a short time filler player, I simply can't buy the idea of an AL team whose best DH option is Andruw Jones (or maybe a Jones/Kotsay platoon, I guess) making the playoffs. -

QUOTE (DBAHO @ Feb 19, 2010 -> 12:06 AM) Boozer would be the low post scorer that the Bulls have been crying out for in the last 5-10 years however. After today's deals, I think Amare definitely ends up in either New York or Miami, Bosh stays with Toronto or goes to Miami to join Wade who sticks around there and the Bulls end up with Joe Johnson. The TT deal, well the Bulls ended up getting what they could for him. Talent wise, TT could make that deal look very bad in the future if he ever reaches his potential, but I don't really see him lasting in Charlotte especially under Larry Brown when he's had run-in's with 3 coaches already. Gerald Wallace is the perfect guy for him to learn off though. Nice to see the Cavs finally lose, hoping the Lakers can come back in the 2nd half here also. I wouldn't be heartbroken at all if the Bulls end up with Joe Johnson instead of Wade, I don't trust Wade's long term health prognosis. I'm not a huge Boozer fan, but Rose/Johnson/Deng/Boozer/Noah still sounds awfully good. I think Bosh is most likely to join Wade in Miami as well, and I guess with that in mind, Amar'e ends up in New York. Not sure what they'll do with their 2nd full boat contract they have available since LeBron definitely isn't going there. -

QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Feb 18, 2010 -> 11:31 PM) Choker? Really?? Have you seen the supporting cast he has had around him? In 2007, he put a bad team on his back and carried them to the Finals. In 08, they ran into a team with 3 of the best players of the last 15 years. Last year, they did get surprised by Orlando, but how can he be labeled a choker already? It took Jordan 6 or 7 years & Scottie Pippen to win a title, Kobe had Shaq to win when he was young, come on. The road to the NBA Finals was paved for him in 2007 in having to face two even .500 teams and a Detroit team getting towards the end of their run. The Cavs even got the break of the mighty Mavs choking out of the playoffs in the 1st round and the Suns being screwed out of the NBA Finals by David Stern that year, yet were swept out of the NBA Finals anyways (it was the Spurs, but that Spurs team wasn't unbeatable by any means at all). LeBron may not have much help, but when you have 7 NBA seasons and 0 NBA Finals wins (not only series wins, but game wins) under your belt, it's hard to take potential greatest of all time talk around such a player seriously. I know it took MJ 7 years to win a title, which is why I think it's perfectly fair LeBron hasn't really taken much heat for his playoff resume so far. But it's getting towards time for him to win one, which is why it will be VERY interesting to see what he does this summer if the Cavs don't win the whole thing. -

QUOTE (Palehosefan @ Feb 18, 2010 -> 11:25 PM) When you look at the talent around Kobe compared to LeBron, I just don't see how anyone can question LeBron if he doesn't win it all. Kobe has 3-4 all-stars around him on the roster. LeBron has a borderline all-star in Maurice Williams and an over the hill Shaq, mixed in with a lot of role players. LeBron truly makes his teammates better like MJ did, Kobe just rides the talent along. LeBron is the only guy I can imagine right now that might end up being the GOAT. Oh i'm not comparing LeBron to Kobe or MJ to Kobe or LeBron to MJ or anything like that. But this is LeBron's 7th year in the league, he's clearly the most valuable, productive, and talented player in the NBA, but he still lacks a ring. If they don't win this year, serious questions need to be raised. You certainly aren't wrong to say LeBron has some sketchy talent around him though, which is why I'd wonder if he'll leave Cleveland if the playoffs don't go well. Then again, with the exception of the Bulls and Clippers, it seems like everybody that can sign the King had to completely gut their roster in order to make it work salarywise, so it's an interesting situation. -

QUOTE (fathom @ Feb 18, 2010 -> 10:54 PM) Nice 43/13/15 for LBJ LeBron is going to be the ultimate prize this summer obviously, but if the Cavs don't win the NBA Title this year, I think it's only fair if the choker word is thrown out there in regards to the King. There is going to be a lot of pressure on him this spring. -

QUOTE (knightni @ Feb 18, 2010 -> 10:31 PM) I have a feeling that LeBron, Dwyane, Chris, and Amar'e will all re-sign with their current teams. I'd be shocked if Bosh stays in Toronto or Amar'e stays in Phoenix. I'd be pretty shocked if LeBron didn't resign, and quite surprised if Wade doesn't though. And I get why Hinrich was kept, as he could be a piece in some sort of sign and trade deal this summer to bring a good player along with maybe a Joe Johnson as a max deal guy to town. I just don't agree with it. Although, I don't think the Bulls would have had room for 2 max deals even had Kirk been dealt. -

QUOTE (Quinarvy @ Feb 18, 2010 -> 08:37 PM) I don't think LeBron is gonna resign. I have no idea why I think that either. I'd love to see LeBron go to the Clippers, just because I think they'd have the potential to be awesome adding him to the pieces they have, plus it's a big market. He'd never do that though. As for today, nice day for the Bulls. Wish they would have traded Hinrich, but at least we now know there is room for a full boat guy this summer, plus the sign and trade option is out there. -

QUOTE (SoxAce @ Feb 18, 2010 -> 02:04 AM) The Kings view Evans as a SG supposedly. Landry is their PF of the future and if he gets minutes (he will there) he could really be special for them. They got rid of the injury prone Martin and his contract (though Houston's starting 5 is solid Brooks, Martin, Ariza, Scola, Yao [when he gets back] I think they will go) and the Rockets get their SG of the future in Martin. Kings got T-Mac who they will probably trade again to NY making it a three way. (though I hope Gar jumps on that) I still am not sure how good Landry is, but he helps them at the 4 (I didn't notice he was in the trade as well before I made my last post). I would tend to agree with the Kings view of Evans as a 2 guard, but now they need to go out and find a point. I still don't get that trade for the Rockets though. I'm not a big Martin fan: he's not a real good shooter from the field, he's overpaid, and I feel he puts up empty numbers, kind of like a shooting guard version of an Elton Brand. -

QUOTE (GoodAsGould @ Feb 18, 2010 -> 01:57 AM) What was cluster f***ed about it, Evans is the pg and Martin the SG. It gave them a tall, athletic, high scoring back court. The old "there's only one ball" saying comes into effect with Casspi, Martin, and Evans on the floor (who are all VERY ball dominant type players). Obviously McGrady doesn't help that that, but they aren't going anywhere this year anyways, and maybe they can use the expiring deal money they'll have this winter with McGrady leaving to get some legit help at the 4-5 (the only real 4-5 players they have right now are Hawes and Jason Thompson). -

Northwestern seems to be uanble to handle the pressure, obviously losing at Iowa and at home to Penn State is just pathetic. They'll be in great position to make the tournament next year, but i'm convinced that if they don't, they never will. -

Martin is a nice player, but his contract is not good. Why would the Rockets give up such a huge, expiring deal for him? Great trade for the Kings, especially since Martin is not needed with Evans around. -

Should a Sox fan WANT Mauer to stay in Minn?

I think it's better for baseball if a guy like Mauer stays in Minnesota. However, there are no circumstances under which the Sox should want him to stay there. -

QUOTE (Felix @ Feb 15, 2010 -> 10:50 PM) I'm not saying VDN is a good coach, but Mike Brown isn't exactly a great coach or anything. He gets away with a lot just because he's got LeBron. I really think Mike Brown is a lousy coach. They could do a WAY better job utilizing LeBron, and Brown got pansted in the ECF last year by Stan Van Gundy. -
I'm not satisfied, but I'm not indifferent either. If the Sox acquired a real DH like Johnny Damon, I would move up into the satisfied category. It wouldn't make the Sox a great team, but it would make them the slight AL Central favorite IMO. As of now, the Twins are the slight favorite IMO.

Why isn't Ricky Henderson ever in Steroid talk?
whitesoxfan101 replied to Jerksticks's topic in The Diamond Club
QUOTE (Markbilliards @ Feb 14, 2010 -> 02:22 PM) Nothing wrong with a baseball player using steroids. Even if such a statement is true (and it's not), players who have even reasonable evidence against them have no shot at getting into the hall of fame. So questions such as the title of this thread are very important. -

QUOTE (Jenks Heat @ Feb 12, 2010 -> 03:16 PM) I love the rotating DH..........as long as the options are viable hitters. Jones may be but Vizquel, Kotsay and Nix are not. Exactly, a rotation of a few to several guys who can hit is a great idea. A rotation of bench players who can't even hit at a league average level is not. -

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Feb 12, 2010 -> 12:47 PM) AJ will never DH for ozzie, not if he only has 1 backup catcher. Nix shouldn't be DHing either unless he becomes a totally new hitter this year. I wouldn't be surprised at all if Nix has a better offensive year than Vizquel and Andruw Jones, so I wouldn't mind him DHing under the current circumstances. -
QUOTE (Jenks Heat @ Feb 12, 2010 -> 12:39 PM) So they will honor Frank Thomas on a day when a decent percentage of folks will be cheering for the other team.... Why not do this to sell tickets to a game against a s***ty team? They want to make sure the building is absolutely full for this ceremony I'd assume, and I can't blame them (although I think it'd sell out even if the ceremony were held on a Wednesday against the Orioles or something, but I can see why they did it this way).

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Feb 12, 2010 -> 08:33 AM) I've read quotes from JR that he won't lose money to win games, but he will bust the budget if said player(s) guarantee a championship. If the White Sox spend money, it means it was available. I don't think some people realize how much having a legitimate, mid 800's OPS type left handed bat at DH who can also play LF at times like Johnny Damon will upgrade this team over rotating 4 guys who cannot hit at the DH spot. I really think a move like this fits into the idea that we'll overspend a bit for one more guy if we feel it makes us a lot better. -

QUOTE (whitesoxfan99 @ Feb 12, 2010 -> 12:35 AM) First one for Illinois since Dee Brown. Great week for the program. Illinois is going to be an absolutely fascinating team to watch next season. It's too bad Crandall Head has the ACL, or he might have made the McD's AA too.
