  1. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Feb 11, 2010 -> 09:25 PM) I'm just worried that a lot of that better-ness may be related to the Yankee stadium. Like it or not, he's actually quite a bit older than Kotsay. Yankee Stadium certainly gave the slugging percentage a bit of a boost, but he had very similar numbers in 2008 to what he did in 2009. And he's still a much better hitter than Mark Kotsay.
  2. QUOTE (greasywheels121 @ Feb 11, 2010 -> 10:34 PM) http://sports.espn.go.com/chicago/mlb/news/story?id=4907072 Reading the update on ESPN.com, there's speculation that #35 will officially be put on the outfield wall on August 2nd---which would mark the 20 year anniversary of his White Sox/MLB debut. August 2nd is an off day, and the Sox are on the road thereafter until August 10th. August 1st is a Sunday home game against Oakland though. Seems like a pretty good fit for a retirement date. At any rate, it'd be cool if they announce the jersey retirement ceremony date tomorrow. I know I, as well as many other Sox fans, would love to be there for it.
  3. Frank was the biggest reason I became a Sox fan as a young child, and I'm sure quite a few other posters here would express similar thoughts. The best player in Sox history, by a large margin. Get the hall of fame bust ready, get the statue ready, get the number retirement ceremony ready, etc etc. It's a sad day today, even though we've known he's really been retired for a long time now.
  4. QUOTE (hitlesswonder @ Feb 9, 2010 -> 09:34 PM) Maybe this will be the end of posts about how McCamey will never be a real point guard. It's true he doesn't look like point guard and he's not quick, but he's always had great court vision. He's been shooting the lights out the last 2 games and so people love him now, but he's been leading the Big Ten in assists all season. His assist/turnover ratio is 2/1 and he's 2nd in the Big Ten in assists. He could do a better job not turning it over, but other than that, he looks like a legit point guard.
  5. Nice to see the Bulls take care of business against a bad team tonight (and at Indiana too, where they have seemed to struggle in recent years). Be nice if they can beat Orlando and get above .500 going into the break tomorrow.
  6. QUOTE (fathom @ Feb 9, 2010 -> 09:05 PM) Since yesterday? http://rivals.yahoo.com/ncaa/basketball/re...636&prov=ap I know you hate Illinois, but it's still a very impressive win tonight (although it's hyperbolic to call it maybe the best one in America this year). I still don't think Illinois has a realistic shot at winning the Big 10, but that's only due to the schedule. They seem to be figuring it out, and should have no problem making the tournament if they continue to perform as they have lately.
  7. QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ Feb 8, 2010 -> 08:38 PM) Like any of us know that. Yeah, other than Frank Thomas, I give up guessing who is and isn't roiding.
  8. QUOTE (lostfan @ Feb 5, 2010 -> 06:39 PM) Well... how can you blame them for that one I can't. As long as the building is still full every game and the tv ratings are through the roof despite heading downhill on the field, they really have no reason to think otherwise.
  9. QUOTE (GoodAsGould @ Feb 5, 2010 -> 04:06 PM) Well looks like Rod Marinelli will be the defensive coordinator for the Bears, pretty lame to promote a guy on a defense that was part of the problem last season but it is what it is. The Bears have made two things crystal clear in the last few weeks, starting with that joke of a press conference where they pretended to be mad and make massive changes. 1. They don't care about winning or their fans. 2. They think their fans are stupid. They had that embarrassing little dog and pony show where they brought in a bunch of guys to interview for the OC position, when in reality Mike Martz (who they knew was going to be available as long as they needed him to be since nobody else wanted him) was their choice as soon as Jeremy Bates went to Seattle with Pete Carroll. No idea why they did that, maybe they thought it would appease the fans, but really, it just made them look dumb. But they topped themselves with the defensive coaching situation. They didn't fire a single defensive coach except DB coach Steven Wilks (who must not have been one of Lovie's friends) despite getting progressively worse 3 years in a row on defense, and falling into the bottom half of the league while being frequently embarrassed in 2009. Today, they hired a 60 year old man who hasn't been a defensive coordinator or the defensive playcaller for a football team since he coached at a high school in the mid 1970's (and there's that whole 0-16 thing two years ago too). And they tried to sneak it under everybody's nose since they knew it was a joke by not only doing it on a Friday afternoon with a press release, which of course is the best time to release crappy news, but also doing it the Friday afternoon before the Super Bowl. It's pretty clear the Bears don't have a great deal of interest in winning with everything that they have done this offeason, and it's pretty clear they think their fans are stupid. Maybe they are right, because despite the fact this franchise is currently in shambles with a clown car trio at President, GM, and Head Coach (and the owners are just as bad, if not worse). Despite the fact they will miss the playoffs for the 4th straight year in 2010, Soldier Field will still be jam packed every game in 2010. We make fun of Cubs fans for showing up even when the team doesn't care, maybe we as Bears fans deserve the same ridicule. The only difference is we don't have a better choice to root for in football like we do baseball in Chicago.
  10. QUOTE (Knackattack @ Feb 5, 2010 -> 12:37 PM) I have read a couple times that Rios is gonna start up there. That would not be a surprise. Ozzie didn't want a real DH, why would he want a guy taylor made to hit #2 in the order like Beckham there when he can hit a guy who was below the mendoza line for us last year in that spot instead?
  11. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Feb 5, 2010 -> 08:53 AM) You never read things I post do you? Is there a thread on this already?
  12. QUOTE (Yoda @ Jan 3, 2010 -> 06:36 PM) The Weather Channel girl . . . whatever her name is. Ahh that's Nicole Mitchell. She's generally on later at night, 10 or 11 pm. That's usually the time I tune in to catch the weather anyways, but her being on there means I might take a peek even if I know the forecast already.
  13. If he retires, that's his decision, but to retire at age 32 and leave that much money, pitching success, and potential memories on the table as a baseball player makes no sense. This isn't like football where you risk your health and limb at all times.
  14. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2010/02/04/s...p_n_450282.html He's currently the democratic nominee for Lieutentant Governor. Can't imagine that will last long though. This story is about what you'd expect from Illinois politics, unfortunately.
  15. As good as Kovalchuk is, I don't know if acquiring him gets the Hawks much closer to winning a Cup (we'll see to see how steep a price this trade costs New Jersey). The Hawks need a goalie, and probably another defensemen, although a legitimate goalie would help a lot more than just the goals against average in my opinion.
  16. QUOTE (NIUSox @ Jan 27, 2010 -> 01:37 PM) Too bad they didn't run into any hot girls Haha. The girl in the red plaid actually isn't bad at all, but the other two.....not good.
  17. Explains why they looked so bad in the Vancouver game. I don't think it's much of an issue beyond that though. They are all old enough to drink, and they are in a limo so it's not like they are driving drunk like a bunch of idiots. The only real issues here are the fact that some of them might shave their chests, and the fact that hockey players should be able to reel in better girls than that during a drunken night of fun.
  18. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Jan 27, 2010 -> 11:10 AM) I'll take that bet - over/under at 20 games at DH, I'll go the over. What's the stake? Sig bet? Yeah I'd imagine the Twins will try and sneak Kubel into LF with Thome as DH against RHP as often as they feel possible. Of course, just how bad Kubel actually butchers LF as well as Thome's health (or lack thereof) will both be issues that dictate just how often "they feel possible" actually is, but I'd guess it'll be more than 20 games.
  19. QUOTE (RockRaines @ Jan 26, 2010 -> 08:24 PM) Vizquel is a backup infielder, if Thome could play 3 positions in the infield, he probably would have a spot as well. I swear some of you people think a baseball team is the same as a fantasy league roster. Vizquel being on the team isn't a problem (although I personally disagree with it since he's 42 and can't hit, but I can understand why he's on the team), not having a DH is the problem. They are two separate issues.
  20. QUOTE (daa84 @ Jan 26, 2010 -> 08:19 PM) isn't thome talking about himself? Merkin posted 3 tweets that all seem to go together...i think he's just saying that the sox were worried about getting him enough AB..... Thome: "I spent four years here in Chicago, and I think from the White Sox end that was a pretty tough decision for them." More Thome: "They had a guy they were thinking about bring back and worried about the number of at-bats." Thome on Chicago: "I love the city of Chicago, and I had a ton of great memories and will always cherish the memories there." im am still a bit frightened by the fact that our manager can't find enough ABs for Thome, because jones kotsay and vizquel are on the team....yuck Not only is it scary that Ozzie thinks this, it's scary that Kenny Williams did not overrule such asinine ideas.
  21. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Jan 26, 2010 -> 08:06 PM) They did away with that rule. Really? When and why did they do that?
  22. QUOTE (fathom @ Jan 26, 2010 -> 08:03 PM) Because I saw him hit in the first half? Also, maybe playing less in the field and spending more time at DH would be good for his legs...which means better strength at the plate? What's the rules though on signing someone you didn't offer arbitration to? Also, how do we know this doesn't mean Carl or Robbie aren't coming back? Can't sign somebody you didn't offer arbitration until either May 1st or 15th. Can't remember which date it is.
  23. QUOTE (scenario @ Jan 26, 2010 -> 06:42 PM) Imagine a right-handed pitcher facing Mauer, Morneau, Kubel, and Thome in the middle of the lineup... and then Cuddyer behind them. Crap. I'd imagine the Sox will try and make sure Danks and Buehrle see a lot of starts against them this year. If memory serves me, Kubel in LF defensively is really bad news though.
  24. QUOTE (scenario @ Jan 26, 2010 -> 06:31 PM) Possible that the Twins could trade Delmon Young, put Kubel back in left, and start Thome at DH? They could do that if they enjoy playing with fire. That'd be a high risk/high reward type move though.
  25. QUOTE (fathom @ Jan 26, 2010 -> 06:29 PM) I can't imagine Thome's back will stay too healthy playing in that cold up there. People are forgetting how much work he had to do with the training staff here, and one place where the Sox are second to none is in that category. We don't know how he's going to react without the training regiment he had here, plus being a year older, plus plus playing outside up there.
