QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Feb 23, 2009 -> 08:41 AM) Its not a big surprise. This administration gets NASTY when it gets critisized, and it has been that way since the campaign. Its funny that Bush got so much critisizm for saying stuff like you are with us or against us, because Obama might not be saying it, but he is sure as hell doing it. This administration, in terms of how it responds to being critisized at least early on, reminds me almost of the Cubs. They simply can't fathom that anybody would disagree with them, and they try to completely discredit anybody who does as crazy. (And yes, I'm aware that a few people here might think me comparing Obama to the Cubs is worse than the Stalin, Hitler, and communist accusations made of him by some Republicans recently. )

Dave Wilder saga takes another interesting turn

QUOTE (fathom @ Feb 23, 2009 -> 10:37 AM) Wilder belongs in jail for what he did. It's karma that he got f'd in the ass by his nightclub investment. Agreed. I almost want to give Kenny a pass to a certain degree with our bad farm system in recent years considering what Wilder was doing underneath his nose honestly. I'm just glad he was finally caught, and as for Jim Bowden, well with some of the stories that came out about him during his Cincinnati days I wouldn't be surprised in the least if he's a cheating bum. -
QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ Feb 22, 2009 -> 10:47 PM) I just did the research. Only 7 movies have won more Oscars than Slumdog Millionaire. Think about that. So Slumdog Millionaire isn't the tied for 8th best movie ever made?
-
QUOTE (whitesoxfan99 @ Feb 22, 2009 -> 10:44 PM) Record is 11 by Titanic, Ben Hur and LOTR: Return of the King. I think Slumdog won 8 Lord of the Freaking Rings had an 11 Oscar winning movie? Wow.
-
I didn't turn this only until about quarter to 10, how many awards has this slumdog millionaire movie won anyways? What is the record?

I'm not an expert at all, but would I be out of line to say Sean Penn only beat Mickey Rourke because he played a gay character and a political statement wanted to be made?

QUOTE (Brian @ Feb 22, 2009 -> 09:02 PM) And I'll say it first, "F all the people who say he only won cuz he died." Well this statement is impossible to prove false. People have been calling for him to win at the Oscars since literally the mere hours after he died, so to say it had no influence on him winning at all is probably false.

Damn those are some ugly uniforms.

QUOTE (santo=dorf @ Feb 22, 2009 -> 08:19 PM) See this is the load of hyperbole garbage that makes want to wish ill on player: http://www.chicagotribune.com/sports/baseb...,4631481.column That's not hyperbole, it's Phil Rogers. He makes statements that are foolish and simply wrong such as that one about Crede all the time, so i'm not surprised. The fact he thinks it's "inarguable" that Joe Crede has been better than Jermaine Dye, Mark Buehrle, Bobby Jenks, and even A.J. Pierzynski since 2005 is a riot. QUOTE (Kalapse @ Feb 22, 2009 -> 06:01 PM) Poll the 20-somethings on this site and I guarantee Frank gets 90% of the vote, he's the reason why a large portion of them are Sox fans. I turned 23 a week and a half ago and I can say Frank Thomas (along with the 1993 White Sox when I was 7 and first starting to watch sports) are what made me a White Sox fan.

This thread is now almost obligatory this time of year so I'll be the one who starts it. Is Jimbo's still open? And if so, for how long?

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Feb 22, 2009 -> 03:08 PM) Indiana is actually the only team that has beat all 3 of Boston, Cleveland, and LA this season. They had Granger in those games though, and they are still in dead last in the division. They are definitely a hard team to figure out with wins like those, but overall they are a bad team, and you should not lose to them especially with their best player out. -

Illinois' Big Ten Title hopes took a major blow with Purdue and Michigan State winning this weekend. That's a shame, although a team that fails to reach 40 in two full league games (one at home) probably doesn't deserve to win that league anyways. But at the same time, if they could have just scored 40 points against Penn State, they'd be three wins from at least a co Big Ten title the year after last years debacle. Three straight home losses to Penn State as a program is truly baffling though. -

QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Feb 22, 2009 -> 02:34 PM) Still, the team looked discombombulated at times out there, which is to be expected when you have as many new faces as they have. Would have been a nice road win though. Yeah I expect some communcation issues and an occasional discombobulated appearance from the Bulls the next handful of games until the new guys can blend in, but today is still a TERRIBLE loss. Indiana isn't a good team as is, and to lose to them without Granger is awful. -

Turner should have been aggresive all game as he was the last 5 minutes or so, might have been a different game otherwise. Still a very good win for Illinois though, they played a very good game and Ohio State's zone didn't stop Illinois at all (the only thing that really did was turnovers, many of which were unforced.) That Penn State home loss might be similar to the 2006 one in that it was a bad loss that will destroy their chances at a Big 10 Title (I actually think they finished 1 game out that year, so the loss essentially cost them a share of the title, although Penn State now is better than they were in 2006 obviously.) QUOTE (RockRaines @ Feb 22, 2009 -> 02:04 PM) Pff there was no chance they were going to lose that game. Matta goes to man defense at the 2 min mark, and WOW defensive stops, crazy! Hope you enjoyed getting outcoached on your home floor Thad. Yeah even if Thad likes zone, you have to play man against Illinois. They have NOBODY that can consistently beat people off the dribble. -
I can't decide if the man love around here for TCQ is funny or disturbing. QUOTE (YASNY @ Feb 21, 2009 -> 10:13 PM) Not to challenge you in any way, but I'd like to hear you elaborate on that as to why you're so excited. It could lead to some good conversation here too. I'm not going to go as far as ever like he did, but I am with him in that this is as interested as I have been in seeing what happens during the spring since 2005. The last 3 springs, we kind of knew what was going on heading into spring training, but this year there are a lot of new (young) faces and open spots on the roster/in the rotation/everyday lineup/etc. I'll probably watch more spring training ball (I don't watch a ton of it normally to be honest) than I have in recent years. With that in mind btw, the Sox depth chart was updated yesterday. I'm not sure if there is anything to gather from that (or even how much was changed on it during the update), but I haven't looked at the official site depth chart in a long time and I assume some people are in the same camp: http://chicago.whitesox.mlb.com/team/depth...ex.jsp?c_id=cws

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Feb 21, 2009 -> 08:06 PM) What makes it even funnier is the assumption that everytime Crede got a big hit he basically was making up for f***ing up earlier. Let's go back to the 2005 ALCS. Game 1 he was 1-4 with a homer. The Sox lost 3-2. Joe f***ed up. The one time up he was huge, but if he would have homered 4 times the Sox would have won. Game 2 when he doubled in Ozuna for the winner he was only 2-4 with 2 doubles. In the clincher he only drove in the first run. Then he homered to tie it up in the 7th. Then he drove in the go ahead and winning run in the 8th. I suppose if he would have done something in his second AB he wouldn't have had to come up big. Joe is not a HOFer. He was drafted by the White Sox. He played hurt, didn't complain, kept his mouth shut, and helped the White Sox win. I really find it odd people have a problem with him. He earned his paycheck. That can't be said about everyone. His lifetime .257 batting average and .306 on base percentage, as well as numerous other stats which seem irrelevant to point out since "stats don't matter", suggest that for the vast majority of Joe Crede's career, a late game hit simply was making up for earlier game f*** ups. Yes, he was great late in 2005, during the 2005 postseason, and for the first 5 months of 2006 at the plate. We don't win the World Series without him and i'm grateful to him for that. He also fielded very well for the most part during his White Sox career. Odds are, Josh Fields will be playing 3rd base and thus, we'll miss Crede's defense. But if Fields can even match just his 2007 offensive numbers (and I think he can), then Joe Crede's bat won't be missed at all, even assuming he stays healthy in Minnesota (which he won't.) We'll miss his glove (the healthy version of it anyways), but that's about it.

QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ Feb 21, 2009 -> 04:33 PM) You can argue Jon Garland, too. Garland wasn't even the best starter on the White Sox in 2005. Buehrle was better and I think he finished ahead of Garland in Cy voting too.

QUOTE (qwerty @ Feb 21, 2009 -> 02:44 PM) Say a fictional player has 5 at-bats throughout a game and does the following, strikeout, ground into double play, strikeout, strikeout, single to knock in the game winning run. Pretty impressive to knock in that game winning run right? What i forgot to mention is this player also stranded 7 runners on base, with a chance to either tie or put his time ahead each and every time he came up to the plate. People that preach clutch fail to realize that games can be won and lost just as easily in the middle of a game and even at times in the very first inning. Short term memory would suggest the ''clutch'' factor. I personally do not fall for it. While i would be grateful for the hit a free pass would not be handed out like candy. This post is the rebuttal (correctly) to all of those in this thread and in the White Sox fanbase who think Joe Crede is the 2nd coming of Mr. Jesus Christ. Crede did have many big hits in big spots late in games, but just because he had a lot of 7th to 9th inning hits that drove in runs and helped win games doesn't make him any better than, say, Jim Thome. There are A LOT of baseball games that are won (and lost) by events that occur in the first three innings. That is part of what makes baseball great is it's the one sport moreso than all others where you have to watch the entire game because the events that decide who wins and loses can happen at any time, as opposed to football and basketball where the game more often than not is decided in the 4th quarter. I would bet in many of the games where Joe Crede "saved our ass" with a big hit late, he was 0 for 4 or 1 for 5 or something like that heading into the at bat. If he had been 2 for 4 or 3 for 5, maybe we wouldn't have needed that "big hit."

QUOTE (SnB @ Feb 21, 2009 -> 03:25 PM) they're good Oh yeah, and the scary part is they're only going to get better. They'll be ready to challenge (if not beat out) Detroit for the division title next year, and if they don't win it next year, they will the year after that. To go 9-3 in a stretch of 12 games in a row all in different cities (11 on the road) is incredible. Can't wait for the playoffs, but at the same time I am really enjoying watching them in the regular season as well. -

QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Feb 19, 2009 -> 05:11 PM) If the school chose not to kick him out, I think its fine he kept him around. He tried to give the guy a chance at a good life after making a huge mistake. I don't see a problem with that. I don't condone it, but far worse things have been done by college athletes. He wasn't stealing s*** from the school, he didn't kill anyone, he wasn't dealing drugs. And you sure he become a felon? Didn't he just get probation? Either way, I think he gave Smith every opportunity to prove that he was a good guy and that he made amends for his earlier mistake. It's not Weber's fault the guy was an idiot. Edit: ugh, some ugly english in my first attempt. He came pretty damn close to killing Brian Carlwell, who was in the hospital for a while and in critical condition for a couple days. Not to mention the fact that Jamar never deemed such a situation worthy of dialing 911. Not kicking Jamar off the team immediately after that incident was an absolutely indefensible decision by Bruce, end of story. Oh, and the "best" team in Illinois looked fantastic last night. Watching them and Northern Iowa, two of the three (along with Creighton) "best" teams in the Valley in their brackbusters just shows how far the league has fallen. SIU needs to get good again. -

Hawk sounds different. I mean you can tell it's him, but he still sounds different. -
He's going to look dirty in a Twins uniform. He'll never stay healthy again, and he was overrated for most of his career here (sorry, he was), but he was a big part in us winning a World Series, he played very good defense, and he had as many big hits as anybody, so he was of great use for us. I can't wish him the best because of where he signed, but I'm glad he played for us overall.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Feb 20, 2009 -> 12:29 PM) So I guess 7286 is the big closing low number on the Dow Jones. After that, the next leg down is in the low 6000's back from 1997/1998. Wow. It will probably get to that too. There is nothing stopping the economic disaster at this point, I just hope it stops before everybody has to reside in caves and live off the land.
