Rockies vs. Phillies Series thread
whitesoxfan101 replied to Buehrle>Wood's topic in The Diamond Club
Anybody that likes Wrigley Field itself is simply an idiot. The neighborhood is a good time, but the stadium itself is the biggest hell hole in sports and has no redeeming qualities, since you can find the easy chicks just as well outside the gates as inside of them. -
Cards dismiss GM Walt Jocketty
whitesoxfan101 replied to CardsJimEdmonds15's topic in The Diamond Club
I hope Walt and Tony enjoy their new jobs as GM and Manager in Cincinnati. Those whispers have been out there since about Memorial Day though, worst kept secret in a while. -
Bell shows Peavy how it's done getting a couple HUGE outs to send it to the 8th still only a 6-5 defecit for SD.

Illinois shouldn't be favored, the fact that an unranked team is favored over #5 in the nation is pretty silly. However, the idea that Wisconsin is some big bad team is pretty silly. Their offense was shut down by mighty Iowa, who gave up 38 points to Indiana at home this weekend. They gave up 31 points to the Citadel, Michigan State put up nearly 600 yards on their defense, and they haven't even seen a running game remotely close to as good as Illinois'. And this game is on the road in front of what will be a charged atmosphere. If Wisconsin plays Saturday like they have been all season, they'll lose by 10 points or 2 touchdowns. With that said, I think Wisky will step their game up and it will be a very close game, with home field being a big part in Illinois winning by a field goal. -
QUOTE(fathom @ Oct 1, 2007 -> 08:59 PM) If that ball hit a wheelchair, wouldn't the wheelchair have moved? I don't think it was gone based on the reaction by the fans in the area. Yeah that didn't LOOK like a home run at all, but it bounced awfully far for a ball that apparently hit the top of a padded wall. Very difficult call, and I'm not sure what actually happened either way.

The postseason awards thread: Who ya got?

QUOTE(Tony82087 @ Oct 1, 2007 -> 08:55 PM) It's all about how the award is worded. The award is given out to the MOST VALUABLE PLAYER. While I agree Hanley has great value to the Marlins, how much value did he give a last place team? I know the argument against that is "It's not his fault the team around him sucks" which is a very valid argument, but I go back to what the award is called. The player that receives the award for having the most value in the league should go to a player on a contending team, unless the numbers for a player on a last place team are astronomically better than everyone else. I'd like to just also point out I think the name of the award should be changed to "most outstanding player", because it's not fair to the players on bad teams that they have no help and thus really have little shot at the award. But for now, it's MVP and should be awarded accordingly with such common sense standards as the most valuable player in the league can't be on one of the 3 worst teams in the league. -
QUOTE(Gregory Pratt @ Oct 1, 2007 -> 08:54 PM) Just tell me how Ozzie Guillen is responsible for Jake Peavy's "choke-job" I will admit the people who tell me the more I watch baseball, the more I'll appreciate Ozzie are right. He's not a very good manager, but he's better than many of these clowns I've seen in the last couple weeks like Randolph, Yost, and now Bud Black.

Peavy misses giving up another HR by about a foot, so it's a double. How long will they leave Peavy in, not only has he been busy choking all game but now I'd bet he's pretty tired too.

QUOTE(Gregory Pratt @ Oct 1, 2007 -> 08:51 PM) Frank Thomas was a choker until 2006. Barry Bonds until he juiced up and went back with the Giants. What you're saying is reactionary, ridiculous bulls***. "Peavy's a choker!!!!" Give me a break. Barry Bonds pre steroids never did anything in big games, so that would not be a prudent example. And btw, Frank went 0 for 13 in the ALCS last year as his team got swept, so he didn't exactly exorcise all of his demons in 2006 either.

QUOTE(CWSGuy406 @ Oct 1, 2007 -> 08:48 PM) You can't be serious... If the Marlins didn't have Ramirez, they're a bunch of wins worse, last place or not. You're docking him because his teammates suck. It's an individual award. That's funny -- last place team can't have a valuable player. That's golden. It's funny to me you think that a player on a last place team can be the most valuable in baseball. That's maybe the dumbest thing I've ever seen on these boards, which is quite the statement. How can a guy on a 5th or 6th place team be more valuable than every player on all the 1st and 2nd place teams in his league?? Keep in mind here, I'm not one of the he must make the playoffs to win MVP people, but he can't finish in LAST. -
QUOTE(Gregory Pratt @ Oct 1, 2007 -> 08:46 PM) Give me a break -- Peavy's not a choker because he's had three rough games under the age of 27. Tonight was a classic choke by him, just like his first 2 playoff apperances. How many bad games in playoff situations will it take to convince you guys? And wow, what an inning by Hawkins. Eat that s***, Cub fans.
-
Wow, Tulowitzki with an error.......that doesn't happen too often for anybody on their team, let alone him. EDIT: They called it a hit, which is fine, the score keeper has a right to be wrong....but that's an E6 all the way.

QUOTE(CWSGuy406 @ Oct 1, 2007 -> 08:42 PM) So you're making MVP into a 'partly about the individual, partly about the team' award. I'd like to base it on what the individual does. Then change it to most outstanding player award. But no player in the history of baseball has been valuable to a last place team, because if said player, no matter how great a season he had, were not around, his team would have still finished in last. -
QUOTE(Gregory Pratt @ Oct 1, 2007 -> 08:38 PM) Brady Clark is just as bad as Rob Mackowiak, holy s***. People wanted this guy for the White Sox centerfield spot? Nobody is this bad "just one game" of the year. There's something seriously wrong with him. Correct, however that first ball to CF is a triple IMO even if he plays it properly with as easy as Smith made it to third. The problem was the Tulowitzki ball is an easy out he turned into a triple, that was Mackowiak-esque. Fortunately for the Padres, it didn't cost them a run. Hey Hammerhead, is Peavy a choker now? 6 innings, 6 earned runs in a 1 game playoff to go along with that sparking 11 playoff ERA. Peavy left no doubt tonight either, as he both came out and dug an immediate 3-0 hole and then screwed his team that bailed him out over by turning a 5-3 lead into a 6-5 defecit. LaTroy Hawkins?? Uh oh......
-
Will Carroll is also right, while our moron of a GM says talent isn't the problem, and will see otherwise when we go 77-85 next season due to our age, one dimensional young players, and "keeping fiscal sanity", thus avoiding making big moves on the FA market.

QUOTE(CWSGuy406 @ Oct 1, 2007 -> 02:00 PM) I'm also surprised with so many people here picking J-Roll. Are people aware of how much better a season Hanley Ramirez had compared to Rollins? I guess that gets into the "What is your definition of MVP?" talk, though, so... I refuse to ever vote for a guy on a last place team for MVP, no matter how good he is. They could have FOR SURE finished in last place without Hanley, just as they did with him. If it were the most outstanding player award, well that's different, but until they change it from MVP to MOP, last place guys should never even be considered for the award. -
The Rockies LOOGY and ROOGY get it done back to back to get them to the bottom of the 6th tied at 5. If yesterday was any indication, Fuentes for the 7th and 8th and Corpas for the 9th, while hoping at some point in their 12 outs of regulation at bats left they can get a run or 2, is the strategy Hurdle may use.
-
He's still going to win the Cy Young, and it's still a regular season game, but Jake Peavy is starting to look like a choker. He has a gaudy career ERA of 11 in the playoffs, and tonight he came out and immediately put his team in a 3-0 hole, and then after they bailed him out, promtly blew a 5-3 lead.

QUOTE(JuiceCruz16 @ Oct 1, 2007 -> 09:41 AM) Yes, the Mackey thing is reminisent of JamesOn Curry with Carolina. N.C. immediatly cut ties with him and revoked his scholarship when he was arrested at school for selling narcotics, but Oklahoma State swooped him up anyway and now he is with the Bulls in the NBA. So, this is not a death sentence for Bud's basketball career necersarily, but damn it is a terrible decision on his part. I hope he comes through this in the long run. Yeah the JamesOn Curry situation has actually had a happy ending as by all accounts he has turned his life around. I doubt Mackey goes to IU now but hopefully he gets the same chance. -

QUOTE(RockRaines @ Oct 1, 2007 -> 10:21 AM) They didnt lose a game and it was all luck? The fact that they went 14-0 despite all of the following late game senarios: Winning 23-19 over the Bearcats in Cincinnati, despite UC having first and goal and getting 4 passes into the end zone that could have won it with less than a minute to go before an interception. Won 19-14 at UW despite trailing 14-13 halfway through the 4th quarter at Wisconsin, and then holding on to a 5 point lead late in the 4th as Wisconsin had the ball inside the OSU 30. Won 13-7 at home over Penn State due to a 3rd quarter pick 6 by Chris Gamble, then held on thanks in large part to no call on an obvious pass interference late in the game in OSU territory. Won 10-6 at Purdue despite being down 6-3 with 2 minutes left in the game, and hitting a 4th and 1 at the Purdue 35 on a bomb for a touchdown that was perfectly covered. Won 23-16 in overtime at Illinois in a game that would have gone to double overtime if not for a horrid ruling of a bobble by Walter Young on an obvious TD catch. Beat Michigan 14-9 at Ohio Stadium after trailing 9-7 in the 4th quarter and allowing Michigan into OSU territory several times in the second half. Winning 31-24 in double overtime over Miami, a victory that isn't possible without a late and phanton pass interference call on 4th down in the 1st overtime. Was that team a great clutch team and well coached? There is no doubt at all they were, but the fact that they won every single one of those games (half of their overall schedule) in the same season is without question very lucky, if even one break goes against them in any of those games, they lose. -
Here are mine: NL MVP: Jimmy Rollins, Matt Holliday a close 2nd. NL ROY: Ryan Braun, but his defensive nightmares makes Tulowitzki a close 2nd. NL Cy Young: Jake Peavy no matter what happens tomorrow, and it's not really even close. NL Manager of the Year: Bob Melvin (team won 90 games and beat out two solid 89 win teams in the NL West for the crown despite being outscored this season overall). AL MVP: A-Rod, and it's not even close. At all. He had one of the great seasons of all time, and carried his team into October. AL ROY: Dustin Pedroia wins in a weak crop with his over 800 OPS, .312 average, and 40 doubles. Brian Banister's nightmare September killed his chances. AL Cy Young: Beckett gets my vote, mainly because I can't pick one between Carmona and Sabathia from the Indians. AL Manager of the Year: Eric Wedge. Fausto Carmona went from 1-10 to 19-8, Hafner was subpar for him, and Joe Borowski was his closer. Yet, the Indians were 18 games better. Enough said.

For now, I'll stick with go Rockies tomorrow and there is a reason the Cubs have the worst record of all the playoff teams, and we will see it soon.

QUOTE(Rowand44 @ Oct 1, 2007 -> 12:27 AM) What's with you and always thinking close games are "luck?"' If you win every close game in college football, it's a matter of luck. The 2002 Ohio State Buckeyes, for instance, are the luckiest team I've ever seen. College Football is a very bizarre and momentum based game, and thusly the truly good teams have their share of easy wins. In the NFL, I think you can be more of a team that wins close games and not be lucky since that's more coaching with as close every team is talentwise. But in college football, if your truly a top 5 or 10 team like everybody thinks Wisconsin is, you shouldn't have to narrowly survive a home game against an Iowa team that has lost 7 straight league games and isn't going bowling, play tight with and give up 31 at home to The Citadel, and need a late TD to win at UNLV (plus obviously the Michigan State game Saturday). Combine that with the fact Illinois just got done running all over the #1 rush defense in the Big 10 in the form of over 200 yards, and Wisconsin is 10th in the Big 10 in rush defense per carry, as well as McGee seeing some time at QB and the game being in C/U, and Illinois will win. -
Btw, Donovan McNabb was sacked 12 times tonight. That's right, a dozen, 12, by the freaking Giants. Osi Uminoyra (I'm sure I spelled that wrong) had 6 by himself. 6 sacks, 1 guy, 1 NFL game. Wow, and I thought the Bears line was bad....

That 72-90 exact right prediction for us is impressive, and in fact besides the Twins winning the AL Central nonsense and their Rockies prognostication they did a great job actually.
