White Sox vs. Cubs, 5/20/07 (W)

I really don't care how slow he is, Paulie HAS to be at 3rd right now. That was a hit from the moment of contact. -

Nice at bat, foul off 3 cookies, then pop up a 3-2 cookie to 1st. -

QUOTE(Gene Honda Civic @ May 20, 2007 -> 01:42 PM) This is easy. I'll put it on a tee for you: Gavin Floyd Floyd looks awful today in AAA. Wouldn't want to see him in AAAA, that's for sure. -

Dye took an interesting route to that first out. And I don't like 4 pitch walks. -

That lake causes bizarre weather. It's about 65 out here in the western burbs, with a nice sun peeking through the clouds every so often and a light breeze. PERFECT weather. But down by the lake, it's 50 with a strong wind and lots of clouds, brrr. -
QUOTE(fathom @ May 19, 2007 -> 08:09 PM) Two of the overall worst days of baseball in a long time the past two days. Not a single team I wanted to see win, won. Well the Reds did win at Cleveland yesterday, and lead 2-0 today. Speaking of which, the Indians are seeing up close and personal one of their top 2 or 3 biggest organizational mistakes of the last decade. They traded Phillps to the Reds for a PTBNL at the beginning of last season. He's a great fielder, and had a respectable .276/.324/.427/.751 at the dish last year with 17 homers, 28 doubles, 75 RBI, and 25 for 27 in steals. The now only 25 year old entered today with 8 doubles, 3 triples, 7 homers, 24 RBI, 8 for 11 in steals, and a .293/.339/.494/.833, and has already extended his hitting streak to 22 games with a homer in the 2nd today. And he's still a superior fielder with really good speed who is only 25. Now I know they have and really like Barfield, but they gave up Kouzmanoff to get him (and yes, I know they have Marte too), but even with all that said, to give up BP for nothing is not good. Oops.

QUOTE(greg775 @ May 20, 2007 -> 12:47 AM) Why does everybody say the wind will be blowing in for Sunday's game? Is Mother Nature that predictable? What if it's swirling to right or blowing out? How do we KNOW it's gonna blow in??? The wind at Wrigley is the polar opposite of The Cell. About 95 percent of the time it's either a true in wind (on cooler days where the wind is off the lake like today) or true out (on warmer days like yesterday). They almost never get the swirling affect, just occsionally the wind will shift from true out to true in or vice versa if a front comes through.

The one defense I will give the bullpen is the blown saves stat. I'd bet we've had bullpen outings at least a few times where they have thrown 4 or 5 innings and given up 1 total run, but got a blown save because the run was given up in the 7th of a 3-2 game. That is a deceiving stat to say the least with this team, although most of the other ones aren't.

If we had Aaron Rowand, Neal Cotts, Luis Vizcaino, Geoff Blum, Freddy Garcia, Brandon McCarthy, and El Duque right now instead of Thome, The Pirate, Danks, and Masset, we'd be no better off. The problem isn't our starting pitching, it's our offense, and Blum and Rowand wouldn't be making any difference (and I don't give a damn what Rowand's numbers are right now). The one trade that could blow up on his here is giving up Chris Young, but overall, our problems right now go deeper than not keeping the 2005 core together. Much deeper.

That's awesome, although I don't think he needed the tractor other than to be careful with the horse, haha. -

I think everybody is already prepared for a sweep, thus watch us somehow win today, haha. -
QUOTE(fathom @ May 20, 2007 -> 09:42 AM) That trade was a turning point in this organization's future....and I've said it from the day it was rumored. Yeah, "ignore the farm, we want that World Series charm" became official that day. I wouldn't regret that trade if our outfield wasn't so bad, but it is and I do. Young has really heated up lately.

Yankees about to contest Giambi's contract?
whitesoxfan101 replied to caulfield12's topic in The Diamond Club
Not sure why they would. His contract is over after either this year or next right? And he is still a productive hitter, and baseball has shown time and time again that if you produce, they don't care what your on. Talk about hypocritical. -
Charlotte (18-24) pitches Gavin Floyd (1-2, 3.74) against Toledo (20-23) and Dennis Tankersley (3-2, 3.88) at 1 PM Birmingham (19-24) sends Jack Egbert (3-3, 3.23) against Montgomery (23-20) and James Houser (2-0, 2.93) at 2 PM Winston-Salem and Kannapolis both have the day off.

Carter needs to move up soon, I mean he even has more walks than K's in his last dozen games. He seems to really be maturing as a hitter and I think the move this year would go better than it did last.

Cheat brings up a fair point about the bullpen btw, as much as people don't want to hear it.

QUOTE(Heads22 @ May 20, 2007 -> 12:00 AM) • I hope some of you stop posting if we ever fall below .500. I could conclude that we are bad at thus point and learn to deal with it. As of now, the cocktease that is the Chicago White Sox is borderline impossible to watch. And I agree with you on Owens, but don't post that too often, they'll kill us for thinking that.

QUOTE(Heads22 @ May 20, 2007 -> 12:18 AM) I've been waiting for Lee Cruz to break out. I hope he can. He is bizarre. He is a righty swinger hitting .305 against RHP and .200 against southpaws. He only has 13 k's in 115 plate apperances, however he also has only THREE WALKS, keeping his OPS at a atrocious .721 (although his .420 slugging ain't nothing to write home about either). Although he is red hot lately, .341 his last 10 games with 14 of his 31 hits this year, 8 of his 12 extra base hits, 7 of his 12 RBI, and only 3 k's in 41 at bats (but ZERO walks). But as you can see, of his 30 games, the vast majority of the damage he's done has been in the most recent 1/3rd, so he's been better.

Is this like the surgery Adam had that created those damn females?

B-Ham lost 6-2. Gio wasn't too great, but considering that lineup he was against, it could have been worse (5 IP, 7 hits, 3 runs earned, 3 walks, 4 k's) and Sierra was awful in relief. Cory Aldridge was the entire offense, he had 2 of the 4 team hits and both RBI's of the night on solo homers, Getz and Lucy each 0 for 4 with a k each. W-S lost 8-7 in 10 innings. Everybody that pitched for W-S was bad except Joseph Torres and Chirino was ok (the one hot Matthew Zaleski sucked, Lujan was bad for once, Omogrosso was brutal after being better lately). Cunningham FINALLY had a breakout game of this slump, 3 for 5 with a triple and run scored, Schnur 1 for 4 with a walk and run, David Cook 3 for 5 with a 2 run homer, Adam Ricks 2 for 5 with an RBI and run, Paulo Orlando was 3 for 4 with a walk, k, 2 runs, a homer, and 2 RBI. And completing the organizational theme of outstanding pitching today, Kanny won 10-9 in 10 innings. Edwards and Santeliz were both pretty bad, however Texiera, Noe Rodriguez, and John Wesley combined 5.2 innings of scoreless relief, allowing only 2 hits, 2 walks, and 6 k's. That set the stage for Chris Carter to be the hero once again. Carter was 2 for 4 with a walk and a pair of 2 run homers, the latter capping a 4 run rally in the 8th to force it to extras. Shelby was 2 for 6 with 3 runs and a k, Sharp 3 for 6 with 2 runs, 2 k's, and 2 RBI, Allen 2 for 5 with a k and solo HR, Cruz 2 for 5 with an RBI and k, really everybody hit well.

Knights win 8-2. Heath pitched 7, allowed a lot of baserunners (8 hits, 2 walks) but only 1 run and had 4 k's while pitching well to get out of some jams (and got help on that relay and pick off running gaffe) to move to 4-3 with a 4.07 (although he now has 25 walks in 55 innings to last years 39 in 155, oy) and his GO/AO is down at 0.91 from 1.38. Wassermann and his weird delivery allowed a run on 2 hits with 1 k in the 8th (rare run allowed for him), and Prinz with another good outing, scoreless 9th on 2 hits, but struck out the side. Owens 0 for 3 with a walk and hit by pitch, run scored, 2 k's, and caught stealing. Lopez 2 for 4 with 2 runs and a walk, Thome 1 for 2 with 2 runs, an RBI, and 3 walks. Anderson 1 for 5 with a run, RBI, K, and 5 LOB (ick), and Fields was 2 for 4 with a run, walk, k, and 5 RBI's (including the grand slam). Thome being interviewed post game sounds like he thinks he'll be back and playing after tomorrow's finale with the Cubs.
-
New Toledo P Anthony Tomey will face Jim Thome this inning (yes, they are pronounced the same way). Thome and Fields walked, and Andy Gonzalez had a bloop single, so for the 2nd time tonight, Anderson is up with them loaded and only 1 out. And for the 2nd time in this spot, he falls behind 0-2. This time, he hits into a 4-6 force play, softly hit so he beats the throw to 1st easily, and Thome scores, so it's an RBI groundout. Better than the K last time he was up in this spot.

QUOTE(CWSGuy406 @ May 19, 2007 -> 08:15 PM) Yeah, I agree, Thorton should definitely go back to the way he pitched in Seattle, as that worked so well for him. Ditto Jenks, he should go back to the way he threw while in the Anahiem organization, that got him real far. Huh? Jenks has been fine this year because he's thrown ALL of his pitches for strikes, something nobody else in our pen seems to be able to do, and Thornton's success lately is he said screw the control, I'm throwing as hard as I can, thus his velocity is back to 96 to 98 and he's not getting hit (and he's still throwing strikes even at this velocity).
-
QUOTE(southsideirish71 @ May 19, 2007 -> 08:14 PM) Massett is a mop up guy for right now. I think he will be much better as a starter. When he has had a chance to go long, he has been great. He throws a good 2 seam fastball that moves. And he has a plus curve. Is he throwing upper 90s no. Is he 92-94 yes. Thats good as a starter. Thornton, you want him to throw first pitch fastballs, because like Sisco and MacDougal he has had control issues. Thornton needed a bit to build up his velocity. Now that its there he is fine. Sisco and MacDougal. Same issues. If they throw strikes they will be fine. Sisco has nasty stuff, he just needs to get aggressive. Aardsma is fine. He was beat because they kept going to the well over and over low and away and the cubs adjusted. Boone Logan is a loogy, and a loogy only until he can throw strikes. He has a great fastball, and a great curve and a nasty delivery. Everything is there but his head. If these guys were to take on Danks go for it mentality, a lot of things would be solved in this pen. I agree with all that except Aardsma and Sisco. Aardsma only has 1 pitch he can throw for a strike, and Sisco has never shown any sign of consistent control his entire career. Those 2 really are concerning.
