"Los Angeles Dodgers vs. Chicago Cubs NLDS"
They're showing the Bartman highlight tonight over and over. Man that guy in the grey next to him.... he also reached up, and while he had no glasses or radio...it couldve very easily been him that went down in infamy, w/ people staking out his house etc. I wonder if he thanks his lucky stars nightly.

Score 670 staff feuds?
QUOTE (Athomeboy_2000 @ Oct 14, 2008 -> 10:23 AM) I dont know if I would say that. He just has very strong opinions. He knows what he believes and he wont allow you to get awa with fluffy BS on the air. I'm in agreement. In general, he elevates the conversation because radio should be something different. If guys are just talking and going unchecked, then it's just sports conversation which is available for free in pretty much every bar or business in Chicago. Whereas bringing an intellectual level to it makes a unique, worthwhile product. And of course people are welcome to not tune in if they dislike it. The thing with B&B is it has the intellectual but also with Boers the 6 year old humor dimension. When it gets intolerant or slanderous towards certain groups in society...I have somewhat of a problem with it. But it's talk radio - you cant go in expecting it to be reined in, and the power of the caller is to get on the line and point out where they're out of line or wrong.

Illinois scalping laws
I read this about Illinois laws on ticket reselling. Does this mean selling tickets on ebay is legal in Illinois? Illinois • Allows ticket resale by registered ticket brokers, Internet auction houses, and Internet websites

Score 670 staff feuds?
QUOTE (kyyle23 @ Oct 14, 2008 -> 10:02 AM) Thats the thing about Bernstein, he just cannot believe in something that can't be quantified in some way or another. He refuses to believe in the concept of momentum, he doesnt believe in protecting hitters, fights in baseball, fights in hockey, etc. interestingly though, if anyone tries to explain why they think momentum exists he can shut them down. and if someone's going to call in a show like this, they have to be on top of their game or else dont bother calling. here's where i agree with a lot that's been said: i wish he'd take guests to task when they discuss a team's momentum.... he gives them a free pass but jumps all over callers who dont do this for a living and beats them so yea, he strongarms the callers and uses his familiarity with the forum to win arguments. but it's still entertaining radio so i tune in. i mean i wouldnt wanna have a beer with him, but i'll listen and it's particularly awesome when the rare caller gets in and beats them at their game. well Boers is always more likely to be caught in something. an act of verbal hypocrisy, that is.

Score 670 staff feuds?
QUOTE (The Critic @ Oct 13, 2008 -> 04:28 PM) I agree that Bernstein could be dialing it up for the show, but he also seems to carry a smugness about himself. He's not a likable character, at least the character he presents publicly. In general I agree. yet it reminds me of this polling I once saw for America's most beloved and most hated TV personalities. Conan O'Brien was #2 most beloved and #3 on most hated. Different strokes for different folks I suppose, as w/ all things.

Score 670 staff feuds?
QUOTE (The Critic @ Oct 13, 2008 -> 04:15 PM) Simply judging by their on-air personas: Bernstein seems to be an insufferable asshole. Boers seems to be that little cartoon dog who runs around the bigger dog, egging him on. Murphy seems to be a hypersensitive wimp. I could definitely see how they wouldn't get along. The one thing I will say, however, is that Bernstein seems partially an on-air persona that cant be that insufferable in real life. As evidenced by him taming it town when he temporarily replaced Dan Patrick on the syndicated show. Whereas Murph and Boers seem to be the real projection of their real selves --- but obviously I cant confirm that assumption - you just get that sense.
-
Score 670 staff feuds?
Do Murph and Boers/Bernstein actually hate each other? Or is it all an act on the part of B&B? Has this ever been addressed on air, anyone know? Boers hit him pretty hard just now. And Berns/Murph come from two total opposite ends of the spectrum.

Sox off-season outlook
The trading Jenks idea is based on the belief that it's about to get worse for him. That a hard thrower at his age is having his K-rate decrease and that his luck from last year (not all luck obviously) could run out in a year. That right now is the time to sell high. The fact that he's entering arb years is not something we're overlooking; it's a huge asset to his trade value!! So there's really no arguing for or against something like that. It's a roll of the dice, some want to take it if they can get good value with OBP. Some dont want to take that risk, and feel the bullpen would be understaffed w/o him. There's all the sense in the world in that. But every year you have to rotate new talent into your bullpen. It's not that wild to think we'd have to do something all teams do constantly. And it will either work or it wont. In '05 we got lucky that some bullpen arms all decided to be alive at once. Not faulting anyone for wanting to hold onto him. But dont pretend like Jenks is the dominant guy he once was. If someone offers a great top of the lineup OBP speedster for Jenks, you really have to think about that. Because a position player will be around for awhile, whereas a pitcher can leave you any moment. See Scott Linebrink.

Trading Swisher
if you're going to get any value for Swish right now, i'd think you'd have to go to a small market team that wants a name on a cheap contract. for instance, the Royals always have to overpay FAs so maybe they'd move younger players (that arent projected future stars) for Swisher... a player who we may not have a place for anyway. that's at least some value. of course then you feel dumb for losing Sweeney (at the least).

cub fans converting
QUOTE (moneyman6544 @ Oct 8, 2008 -> 10:34 AM) two guys I work with just said that they give up on the Cubs and will probably be looking for another Chicago team to cheer on next year. do they realize there's only one other one?

KW's messin' with us: Getz and Owens the change we've bee
I dont think they'll play Owens next year.... But i also think Getz might get every opportunity, and that Hudson aint happenin After all, Hudson is 30 - they're going to want to pay up for a younger player perhaps, but this free agent season it looks more built for stopgaps again. Like Casey Blake maybe, but i dunno. Unless they can actually move one of the older power hitters, I dont know what they can get via trade.
-
cub fans converting
another consideration is some cubs fans cant even dream of going to a game ever, cost wise. at least down south you have mondays.

cub fans converting
o god southpaw. well he's better than that guy Jeffrey that used to run around w/ a big foam mic. He once bopped me on the head w/ his mic. i think he was the one fired for playing "Here I Go Again" during Finley's warmups.

cub fans converting
also 2005 and now this year... i wonder how kids in their formative years are choosing their allegiances these days. 100whatever years of history doesnt mean that much to a kid. the last 20 seconds are all that matter.
-
cub fans converting
I mean, if the Sox had advanced it might have happened in droves. The Cub fanbase is so angry right now, and at their convention they are gonna tear into their team. But some of those non-diehards are going to switch over. Sox will be the optimistic up and coming team next year (dinosaurs aside)...whereas the Cubs could win 120 and the same anxieties will remain. How do you guys feel about this? Plus Steve Stone fans will tune in more, there could be a shift in the fanbase in Chicago. And we can hate it all we want, but more fans means more potential FA dollars at the end of the day.

The piece that doesn't fit
I would be totally fine with keeping Swisher in CF for most the year (could sub in w/ Wise some i suppose) But for that to happen they have to really beef up that infield with guys that have bat control and plate discipline. So if Josh Fields is the 3b (which i doubt) then i wouldnt want Swisher. I want the three open positions to be filled 2/3 with bat control guys, and ideally put those guys 1-2 in the order somehow.

Good riddance OC
people here are just sour on OC b/c he's a rental player. you train yourself early not to get attached. the contract negotiation and the scioscia thing are these minor little details that become huge fodder for building this horrible impression of him in your mind. no he's not the most noble guy; few athletes are. plenty of guys have that smug attitude and have been beloved by the fans. frankly, race plays a factor as well. a white guy can have that smugness and it's seen as tough, not as 'overly brash'

What happens to Uribe?
Casey Blake! ok already violating the rules of my own thread.
-
What happens to Uribe?
Revitalized his career this year, and we all became fans strangely enough Although our standards were pretty low at the position by the time he turned things around He still doesnt have the bat control this team needs. and while we'd love him for a utility role, i bet he'll want a raise and multiyear w/ his comeback year. a good agent can get that from another team. not a ton, but he has defense and some power. what will happen? (not should) and FWIW he's listed as 29 yrs old.

Thank you, Whitesox
white sox made this year fun - and real unique because the team is eliminated after having surpassed opening day expectations. the only thing i can compare it to off the top of my head is 04-05 Bulls. i still feel exactly like i did last offseason, that we need OBP. If Cabrera and Swisher are candidates for leaving, we absolutely have to replace their ..well.... OBP!! that part of this thing is frustrating. we need to get someone who can consistently put a bat on the ball. it would be nice to have someone that can slap one off the turf at opposing parks, but also slap legit hits all over the place. only in dreams i guess. maybe we can trade carlos lee for scott podsednik.

Javy got booed during introductions?
QUOTE (Texsox @ Oct 6, 2008 -> 10:26 AM) Based on his "I'll be laying on the beach with millions after retirement" comment makes me wonder if he really is oblivious. I agree that's pretty bad, I read that as some defensiveness to the criticism With him, I think he attacks the plate so much that it has to be a real hit to yr pride where your stuff is being hit so easily for a month now. To me it's a two way street. Players shouldnt pull this crap about "try to do my job better then" to the fans. Likewise, fans should show a little restraint unless they want to kill a guy's confidence permanently. Again, not b/c it's noble to do, but just b/c you ROOT for this team. you should want the guys comfortable.

Javy got booed during introductions?
QUOTE (Texsox @ Oct 6, 2008 -> 10:23 AM) You do it for the same reason Ozzie called him out. You hope it lights a fire under his ass. Kind of like a 40,000 person intervention. Again, I don't necessarily agree, but can understand it 100%. He is frustrating. i guess i see where you're coming from , but i think he's under pressure enough without that. i mean he's letting this whole team and city down, it's not like he's oblivious to that fact. and also i somehow doubt that the booers are thinking it out as much as you are. i think they're doing it b/c they're personally insecure, intox, whatever. i mean it's the easiest thing to do to throw spitballs from the back row.
-
Javy got booed during introductions?
QUOTE (Texsox @ Oct 6, 2008 -> 10:16 AM) I can understand the boos. I doubt I would have, but I can understand. It's actually pretty simple: Ozzie call him out > he sucks > he gets boo'd direct and simple chain of events. And that could be considered a cumulative boo from fans everywhere he's been. Well one thing is if it's deserved but another side of it, which is the practical side. Why do it? It either is pointless or a detriment. So dont bother. Kind of like the stupid Cubs fans with the Fukudome racist shirts. Why keep pushing for the right to wear/sell that... all it can do is piss him off and make him less comfortable in his first year overseas. It could even make him...gasp..worse. And with Fuku maybe it did. Just adding stress to an already stressful career.
-
Javy got booed during introductions?
Danks mentioned this on his interview on the Score this morning. Really disappointing. We're all frustrated with him, no doubt. But why upset this guy when he's probably going to be coming out of the pen in Game 4 or 5 and is going to give everything he's got, even if it isnt a ton this late in the year. Also 208 IP during the regular season and got some important quality starts mid Aug to mid Sept. Plus coming back next year. I mean what could possibly be the good of booing him. Be disappointed, no need to prove it.
