Poreda's a reliever, c'mon. Let's not pretend here, he has a fastball and some sink.

This makes me think we wont deal Jermaine .... at least not for a reclamation project

The two guys we traded away are semi-disappointments. I'm fine with getting the catcher, the rest is gravy. This and Swisher and the departing FAs leaves us a chunk of cash. We'll see what happens; i have to wait til Opening Day to judge the offseason. Past it, really.

ESPN radio reporting Mets/White Sox talks heating up...

QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Nov 25, 2008 -> 06:49 PM) Dude, the word has long been out on Javy. He's a loser. End of story. He'll take the ball every fifth day and look filthy at times, but when it's time to man up, well, we all know. The Mets are trying to overcome two consecutive chokes. Javy's not the guy you sign to do that. I personally think we're stuck with him. As horrible as it looks right now, when a guy has stuff there's that occasional case where a guy comes out, adds one thing to his arsenal and totally turns around a career. It happened with a far lesser talent on the Indians this very year. I mean, that guy had previously fallen a lot farther than Javy ever has. If we're really honest, would a trading team be taking a huge CHANCE or RISK on Javy? Not really, because even his low is still some level of dependability, and they're not locked in for tons of years. -

I keep forgetting about Richard. It was a great finish to the year for him, I still think he might be one of those guys who could have an undeserved spike in trade value... b/c of his postseason performance. about 7 IP 1 ER i think -
Well, Ozzie said about the same thing about Alexei. it's his job to say it.

I guess it's kind of addressed on this new Trib Q&A with Ozzie http://www.chicagotribune.com/sports/baseb...0,2774756.story Could Jenks, the first pitcher in Sox history with three consecutive 30-save seasons, be traded, perhaps to the Mets? I don't hear anything from Kenny [on a trade]. If I was a GM or manager [for another team], the way baseball is desperate right now about closers, I would ask for him too. But we're going to have a shot to win this year. On the other hand, if I was a general manager ... and I'm going to [get] a bunch of good players to help me now and later for one of my players—and I don't say in particular Bobby—I would listen to see what they have. Who would close if Jenks were traded? As soon as Kenny tells me we're going to trade Bobby, then he will ask me who will close and I will have the answer. Right now I don't have the answer. -

Also I think we can assume Viciedo will be at the major league level for as much as possible next year, getting used to his Cuban support team. -

But there are bad people out there that waste my time with horrible pointless comments.

Brian Roberts, still hoping. Could be like the Pau Gasol situation in the NBA, where the other team holds off on so many trades over the years that they finally just give him away. Of course that had to do with expiring contracts which dont exist in MLB tradewise.

I've been saying you trade Jenks now if the really amazing package comes along. He's not an exceptional closer. He's been very solid, but he doesnt make the team SO good that you turn down a restart of the farm system. -
So crazy that we even had an MVP candidate this year, considering what my expectations were going in. It's still great to think about. Way better being a team ABOUT to be good, as opposed to being solely of dinosaurs.

"Don't Trade Vazquez" official thread
Princess Dye replied to Paint it Black's topic in Pale Hose Talk
It's a good article, hadnt seen that. Yeah, in truth, he hasnt done anything to his value (good or bad) since the trade we made. Teams want arms like that. We're furious over the last few games, but they really dont sink his value or anything. -
The duplicitous Carlton Fisk goes to the dogs

Eh, he can do what he wants. As long as he doesnt descend into the pettiness that is Wade Boggs and his post career comments regarding the Red Sox, essentially baiting their fanbase at every turn. -
One of this morning's articles brings this up.... but it was such a weird year in that the intended change agents (Swisher/Cabrera) werent what turned this thing around. it was the small roster moves (CQ/Alexei). If Swisher had put together a career year this couldve been a WS year. This is the one thing that gives me pause about the trade...but of course i wait til the offseason is over to judge it. That money is needed elsewhere though, for sure.

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Nov 14, 2008 -> 09:16 AM) All I know is Nick Swisher had an OBP 16 points lower than Luis Terrero had in 2007. He also had an OPS only 19 points higher. Terrero was released. Swisher was owed at least $22 million. No one complained when Terrero was jettisoned. Swisher is awful. I don't blame him for being upset when he didn't play. I would think guys that didn't care if they played or not would be a bigger problem. He had no position. Betimet may be able to help out a little bit. Maybe one of the pitchers shocks the world and develops into something useful. The money is the big part. It will be used for something else. KW cut his losses. I dont think Swisher was awful but he's more of what we had, all-or-nothing. I like moving that money elsewhere as well. Kenny made the deal for Swish having no idea that CQ would come along to lock down LF. I think they always felt Swisher could be LF in 09-10 no matter what...now there's no spot.

QUOTE (TheBigHurt @ Nov 13, 2008 -> 09:47 PM) So anyone know who else we got yet, assuming we got someone else? It just doesn't make sense that we didn't... Nobody wanted Swisher SUPER badly, so we had to clear FA dollars with a dump. Hopefully we get something good to make up for it.

QUOTE (dww879 @ Nov 13, 2008 -> 02:46 PM) Damn, I only got one year out of my Swisher jersey, not a good financial move This is why i dont buy jerseys. Gotta Cade McNown around here somewhere.

QUOTE (winninguglyin83 @ Nov 12, 2008 -> 08:55 PM) i am not opposed to dealing Jenks. His price is about to skyrocket. His Ks are declining. He doesn't stay in shape. And he has that screw in his arm. But ... we don't have anybody to fill that role. That's Kenny's dilemma. Thornton is the strikeout guy of that pen right now, Jenks or no Jenks. And there is other left handed relief in the organization (Poreda, Richard)

Mets & White Sox Have Been Talking...
Princess Dye replied to nitetrain8601's topic in Pale Hose Talk
If you can get someone to overpay for Jenks right now, you do it. Even the biggest Jenks supporter has to admit that the specific skill that made him elite is leaving him, and that the risk of losing that with no compensation is big. People say keeping him is the conservative move, but if you have a chance to add serious clumps of talent for him...then really that route is the risk. Meanwhile, Thornton was actually the consistent strikeout guy last year of that pen.
